The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Managed to stick to my fast yesterday despite going out for a 24.5km on and off road bike ride in the morning. Hardly felt hungry at all but was mindful to drink heaps of water as I remember reading (here?) that people often eat when they are thirsty rather than hungry.

Breadandwine · 02/09/2013 00:11

hopefulgum I've had two threatened colds in the past 12 months. I get all the symptoms that tell me I'm about to come down with a cold - then, nothing!

I generally get 3 or 4 colds a year, so I'm putting it down to IF! Smile

wrigglebum · 02/09/2013 07:07

Excellent NSV yesterday- went to a children's party yesterday and all the mums I hadn't seen for a while were saying how great I was looking and asking how I've done it. Normally when I mention 5:2 people are a bit freaked out or dismissive but they were all really positive and one was quizzing me about specifics as she wants to lose some weight and hasn't been successful so far.

Fast day today but I think I'll struggle as we're still on the 5am wake ups Sad. He does lie in bed and go back to sleep by 6 but then awake again at 6.30. Think I'll just head over to the sleep topic...

eatriskier · 02/09/2013 07:24

awful nights sleep last night. cold is finally going but has left a loose cough in its wake. immunity hasn't been helped here but then I'm in a low phase of an auto immune disorder that fasting has really improved so maybe asking for better immunity in low phases is a bit like asking for more miracles!

meant to be fasting today and really want to. I want to get back to normal. however my head feels like its gone round the spin cycle in the washer so I'll see how far I get.

good luck all fasters today.

Dotty342kids · 02/09/2013 08:18

Good morning all!
hitc great to hear about your post holiday weight experience, was same for me earlier this year when we went to Morocco
BssBossh, welcome back!

So, a few completely manic days here of going to Harry Potter Studios (fab, you must go if you like the books / films!) and helping my mum to move from 100 miles away, to a ten minute walk away, I've been a bit all over the place meals wise.
However, normal week this week with fasting today and Thursday and back to my zumba classes today. Cannot bloomin' wait Grin

Catch up with all you Monday fasters later on today, and welcome to all newbies!

Ooh, been meaning to ask - what do you say when people say you're "on the 5:2 diet"? I've had a few friends / friends of friends say "oh, you're on 5:2 aren't you" and I want to explain that it's not a diet, it's a way of eating and I don't really aim to come "off" it in the way that you would any other "diet" but can't find a way of saying it which doesn't sound really up my own backside Grin

alwaysanauntie · 02/09/2013 08:46

Morning all, still haven't caught up since getting back from hols last week (though did see eatriskier got married - congratulations! You kept that quiet!) but had to come on and declare....

I'm in the 9s!!!!!!!!!! Only by 0.1 of a pound but given just back from hols and haven't fasted for 2 weeks, I'm super happy Grin. Haven't been this light since late 2003/early 2004, and am now halfway to my goal. Woop-woop!!!!! :)

Dotty342kids · 02/09/2013 08:56

Brilliant news alwaysanuantie and after a holiday too - amazing!

yecartmannew · 02/09/2013 09:12

Wk 14

Same as week 13 Sad

Bugger, I thought last week was too good to be true! Never mind it is TOTM.

Off on Wed for 3 weeks in the sun, hopefully will maintain.

MrsFlorrick · 02/09/2013 09:43

Hopefulgum. Wow. 4 children. How do you find time for everything?!! I struggle with 2. Haha.

I stuck at low carb for a long time but it didn't work well for me. I lost about 1lbs a month. Bit too slow.

The most effective for me was Dukan. I did it for 4 months and lost 3 stone.

I wanted to try IF because I think it can work well modified once you are at your goal weight so you can keep the weight off. Plus the many reported health benefits are attractive. I'd probably lose the last stone faster on Dukan but I don't think it's particularly healthy long term.

Hence having a crack at IF. I'm still doing 16:8 rather than 5:2. The 500 cals is still scary.

Am trying to fast today. I am aiming for 500 but anything under 800 wi do just fine. Grin

Will also be shredding shortly if the DC will stop squabbling for 20mins. Hmm

DD will be the youngest in her year at school by quite some way. She is a July baby and the next youngest is March. The rest will all almost be 5 yo. I am really worried she won't do well and won't be able to keep up.

It will be the same when dS starts in 2 yeas time. Also a July baby. I didn't plan well did I!??

Hopefully my little DD will cope with school. Quite worried but I guess all parents are

MrsFlorrick · 02/09/2013 09:51

Cartman. 3 weeks in the sun! Lucky you. Good timing just as the good weather is coming to an end here. Smile

Itsaboatjack · 02/09/2013 12:22

Hello again old friends.

I've not been great over the summer hols, I think I only managed about 2 proper fasts, I did a lot of 16:8ing but also too many splurges. But the new term starts this week, so it will be a fresh start for me.

So FD today and so far have managed a 6.5 mile run and not eaten anything yet. I am feeling hungry but I'm going back to basics and glugging down the fruit teas. Keeping myself busy at work now and then a prawn salad planned for dinner.

JB30 · 02/09/2013 12:25

I know what you mean Wriggle about the question. I dislike the scepticism about it - I'm considering just saying eating less moving more, which is technically true!
On an FD and looking forward to just getting through it, bit tired. Will break my fast in about 40 mins, contemplating a walk before lunch, not sure if its cure me or kill me!

Dotty342kids · 02/09/2013 13:04

Hey there itsaboat, nice to have you back! Well done on getting out for a run, very impressive!
I'm fasting today, done zumba class and am drinking loads of water / peeing constantly so all normal for a fast day Grin

NotAsTired · 02/09/2013 13:26

Welcome back ItsABoat. Are you a teacher/lecturer?

Fast day today for me. For the first time ever during a fast day, I have not been hungry, not even a rumble of the tummy. I'm now wondering if I ate in my sleep. Grin

GoodtoBetter · 02/09/2013 14:17

I did 5:2 earlier this year but fell off the wagon a while ago. I am starting again today in an attempt to shift some of the cornetto fuelled lard I have acquired this summer.

I weigh in today at 74kg

Itsaboatjack · 02/09/2013 15:56

Hi Dotty, I've just been catching up a bit, good to see you're still going strong. I've been thinking of going to Harry Potter studios for a while, I'll have to plan it in soon.

NotAsTired, no not a teacher, I just meant new term for the kids Grin, I've taken quite a bit of time off work over the hols though so my routine has been all over the place.

And congratulations Eagle, I hope you had a wonderful day.

So far its going well and I've not eaten anything yet, just had a splash of milk in my cup of tea.

Hope everyone's FDs are going well.

Talkinpeace · 02/09/2013 16:24

Dotty I tell people that I now "do 5:2 intermittent fasting"

Talkinpeace · 02/09/2013 16:31

LOSING WEIGHT WITH A DIET

Cogitating while cycling this morning on the issue.

As an adult a person has a pattern of eating (method z) that results in them being overweight (at size a)
They go on a diet restricting calories all the time (method y) until they get down to "target weight" (size b) and then they come "off the diet" and rapidly return eating as per method z and hence size a

But actually "diet" just means "what you eat"
So you need to eat the right amount to stay stable at size b for ever (method x).
By chance, if you are starting from size a eating method x you will lose weight.
But because method x is nice : healthy meals, no excessive restriction, it becomes the new normal and you stay at size b for the rest of your life

If you see what I mean

MrsFlorrick · 02/09/2013 16:53

Talkingpeace. I see what you mean Grin

Nice formula btw!

Your sciencey look at it has cheered me up.

Awful day here. DC whining screaming squabbling all day. Despite being taken to two different parks, bouncy castles, ice cream and treat in coffee shop!!! Argh. I actually wanted to commit willfull abandonment several times today either that or beg to be arrested to I could spend a night and day alone in the cells.

No one else's DC were whining and screaming in the park. Wtf is wrong with my two??!!

There seems to be a small ceasefire presently as they are too tired just now. Long may it last. Spoilt brats.

Doing well tho. Fasted for 16 hours and so far today I have had one of those Innocent pots (Tom Yum one 239cals) and one soya latte in coffee shop. Yay me!!

Back to cooking DC dinner....

Am having miso cod myself tonight with stir fry veg and Zero noodles. I worked it out to circa 250 cals. So that should see me just under 600 cals inc my soya latte. Grin

swallowedAfly · 02/09/2013 16:55

afternoon!

first day back at work and first day back to fasting. have had nothing but black coffee and water all day and have been on the move all day up and down stairs and just done a 40min walk home in the baking sun. feeling quite fasted Grin

hope i can make it through this evening. am absolutely shattered - work all day, walk home, deal with all the animals and have now collapsed on my bed for a bit till the next round of things to do. hopefully between busy-ness and knackered-ness i'll manage to stick to 500 cals this evening. plan is baked beans, chopped boiled egg and a sprinkle of cheese and that's that.

hope everyone fasting today is doing well.

eatriskier · 02/09/2013 16:57

mrsF have you had zero noodles before? If not I can share some tips to make them more palatable (the packet instructions do not make them that nice imo). Good for you to getting down to under 600.

MrsFlorrick · 02/09/2013 17:07

Eatriskier. I've had before but very happy for extra tips in case I've missed something. Thank you. Smile

eatriskier · 02/09/2013 17:23

The best way I found (from various googling) was to rinse in boiling water, then rinse even more in cold water, then dry fry for 2-3mins. The texture and taste are improved and its takes on the flavour of what they're with even better. That may be what you do already though!

MrsFlorrick · 02/09/2013 18:10

Eatriskier. I do that. I also cook them in miso or sometimes with soy sauce.

I actually quite like them. There is a little crunch to them.

The pasta and rice versions are fine too however they don't actually work particularly well as they don't seem to absorb they way rice does. The crunch isn't pasta like iyswim. But as a noodle replacement they are actually really really good. Very similar to vermicelli noodles or glass noodles.

I do feel they work well to bulk out a meal. It feels more filling.

I also add them to soup for extra bulk without calories.

MissStrawberry · 02/09/2013 18:25

Hello all. Very busy everyone!

I was at a friends for lunch and as calorie count is very low I am having salad with 4 olives and 4 pieces of salami for dinner. First time I have had 2 meals on a FD. Will that have any effect on anything Confused?
