Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

most of the books are based on these threads!

Don't know whether I'll fit another fast in this week so I keep missing breakfast and waiting to see how the day turns out! I'll definitely do Saturday though.

missS glad things are better for you today.

BsshBossh · 07/08/2013 16:49

Breadandwine that's fantastic. What does your doc say about 5:2?

Breadandwine · 07/08/2013 17:16

Bssh he's still ambivalent about it - but one of the practice nurses is really evangelistic about it.

The doc said something along the lines of it's not NICE-recommended. :(

I'd better come clean about a huge fall from grace last night!

Sorry Dotty!

I'm a great lover of chilli chocolate - I get a bar once in a while. And yesterday I was persuaded to try some Tabasco spicy chocolate.

I've told the story here on my blog.

In short, I polished off the whole tin (only 50g, but still).

Then I ate a chunk of my spicy breakfast naan I'd just baked - and then one third of a vegan gammon joint, which was just about to go in the freezer! Sad

So I didn't have breakfast this morning, as an act of penance!

MissStrawberry · 07/08/2013 17:20

I spoke too soon Sad and have just shouted so loud the whole street probably heard. I think it is time to give in and start a thread Sad.

Talkinpeace · 07/08/2013 17:27

Lock them under the stairs THEN start the thread Wink

Damn and blast - I thought that first post didn't go through!

AngieM2 · 07/08/2013 17:35

Hi, quick question about the milk in coffee thingy up thread....I drink decaf tea with skimmed milk on FD's (all the time actually)....is this a no go? Are you saying that the milk breaks the fast as it contains calories?

EagleRiderDirk · 07/08/2013 17:38

B&W I wouldn't worry about NICE recommendations. A few years ago they swore blind that certain drugs did not have some nasty side effects despite specialists seeing them happening with their own eyes. They then changed their guidance to say there was one case (there were at least 70 that I knew of at the time, in the very small sample we were working with).

EagleRiderDirk · 07/08/2013 17:41

Or worry about NICE recommendations too much I should say

EagleRiderDirk · 07/08/2013 17:46

angie there's a bit of a debate on some thread about how 'virgin' you should go on fasts. MM recommends tea and coffee on FD, but some teas and coffee aren't calorie free anyway so technically you are breaking a fast by having them. some say you should only drink zero calorie liquids, some say anything under 15 calories is still considered fasting. My fast day coffees don't even come to 3 cals each, so I count them as part of my allowance but don't view them as breaking my fast (though I always go longer than 16hrs when fasting anyway)

EagleRiderDirk · 07/08/2013 17:47

Eek, some forums even, not threads.

The migraine that has been threatening me on and off for a few weeks has decided to stick around. Apologies for any nonsensical posts. Well, posts more nonsensical than normal

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 07/08/2013 18:06

I'm supposed to be on an eating day today but I haven't actually eaten anything yet! Weird. A combination of bein really busy at work and not feeling strongly hungry.
I'm going to have tomato and feta spaghetti for dinner though. And a glass or three of wine. So don't worry, I'm not going to starve !! :-D

Talkinpeace · 07/08/2013 18:19

I have always had tea with semi skim milk on fasts
one cup every couple of hours with no drinks between
as it keeps me sane
I do not 'sip all the time' - but also do not (Ramadan style) go long periods without drinks - four hours is about my limit.

AngieM2 · 07/08/2013 18:24

Great news ERD and TIP.....need my cups of tea (and it is only with a spot of skimmed milk).... Big sigh of relief.

JB30 · 07/08/2013 18:45

Managed the 16:8 pretty ok but a bit of a piggy guts for lunch & dinner. Big sandwich and now just shared about half a portion of chip shop chips with dh. But it's still well under tdee by mfp, hard to judge those chips but I'd 150 grams out of a 450 bag and I'm counting it as about 400?
Wow guys, I drink tea by the bucket on fd's, my only saving grace is I drink it black. And sometimes I have a skinny cappuccino mid morning, I do count it out of my 500, I hope it's not hindering progress (progress likely to be hindered by copious wine/ chocolate on weekends, truth be told)
Another FD tomorrow, seems too soon Sad

olivo · 07/08/2013 19:08

Blimey, it all sounds a bit scary! I think I might leave it a while....

Unless you can convince me it is not too tricky!

MelanieCheeks · 07/08/2013 19:13

It can be as simple as you like.

On 2 days, eat no more than 500 cals.

That's it in a nutshell. Try that for a while and see how you get on. All the subtleties and variaitons (more than one fast day, eating zero cals, restricting hours of eating, counting on a non-fast day) which individuals do, can be ignored to begin with.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 07/08/2013 19:16

Ten pounds down since 9 July!
:) :) :)

My whole body shape has changed.
Size 12 now loose on waist. Ok M+S trousers which are big size 12 but woo woo woo!

EagleRiderDirk · 07/08/2013 19:23

olivo exactly what melanie said. start easy on yourself anf figure out what works for you. then you can add in/chose to ignore anything else other people do. Just 5 days a week eat 'normally' and 2 days 500 max, and split the 500 anyway you want.

EagleRiderDirk · 07/08/2013 19:23

Well done trucks

olivo · 07/08/2013 19:41

Ok, that sounds fair enough, thanks. I think it was the talk of no tea etc that scared me. I can hopefully do the two days of 500 and that would be a good start. I'm sick of looking so flabby ,and with work and children, exercise just isn't an option at the mo.

Thank you, I will read some of the older threads and may be back for tips or support!

alwaysanauntie · 07/08/2013 20:15

Just to add to the tea comments, I couldn't live without it either (don't drink coffee - it's bilge! Grin) and having a couple of mugs in the morning staves of the breakfast hunger pangs and stops me from devouring any food I can lay my hands on in a rush (usually biscuits/pastries), so I think a few mls of semi skim milk is better in the grand scheme of things. :)

Talkinpeace · 07/08/2013 20:23

Olivo,

you have finished supper so your fast has started.
No snacking or more drinks this evening
tomorrow just have a cuppa for breakfast and have lunch at around 1pm
bingo 16 hour fast under your belt
if you feel shaky, have a miso soup and some carrot sticks and more tea / coffee
and then plan a nice veg heavy supper (soups / tortilla / ratatouille type things are my fave) for around 7pm
stuff your face and then do not snack in the evening
in the morning eat what you fancy
as you have just completed a 36 hour 500 calorie fast

if you had a snack at lunchtime you did 2 x 16 hour 300 calorie fasts

and tomorrow is another day (thanks Rhett)
