Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

trucksanddinosaurs that's brilliant! Well done and imagine how good you'll feel after a few more weeks Smile

olivo · 07/08/2013 20:30

Ah, I see, thanks, Talking. That makes it sound so much simpler than I thought.

Talkinpeace · 07/08/2013 20:34

olivo
that is why we love it and are so evangelical about it
its a really natural way to eat

oooh, big dinner coming up, lighten the meals before it
ooooh, blowout dinner last night, wait till I'm hungry not thirst before eating again
ooh fast day, ok but I can pinch an inch so I cannot starve

trucks
its the clothes style/size choices that are almost the best bit IMHO

MissStrawberry · 07/08/2013 20:48

I have had some fruit and fibre with milk. Felt hungry so decided to eat. Then had really bad tummy ache which was horrible and I felt sick. Not sure if I can't eat cereal now or was it due to eating too much after a few days of cutting down?

Lizzabadger · 07/08/2013 20:53

Brilliant Trucks!

JB30 · 07/08/2013 21:03

Well done Trucks, after 1 month or so, that's some result Grin

Southeastdweller · 07/08/2013 21:04

I've tried to like black tea nod coffee but I can't and as this is supposed to be a WOL I figure having milk in my hot drinks is no big deal at all. It has to be sustainable.

Abra1d · 07/08/2013 21:05

Hi everyone. I posted a bit last autumn (have been doing 5:2 for almost a year now). I had brilliant results to start with--getting down to my lowest weight since i was married 18 years ago. It's true to say that I rarely cheat on fast days and have missed very few of them.

But to my horror when I weighed myself at the weekend I had put on six pounds. I think there is a partial 'digestive' issue here, but otherwise I am concluding that I can't eat exactly what I want on non-fast days. Or drink as much as I thought I could.

Has anyone else found this? I am being extra vigilant now on non-fast days and some of the weight is starting to shift. I have also, now that the heatwave is over, upped my exercise intensity level again.

alwaysanauntie · 07/08/2013 21:09

trucks well done you! Great motivation to keep it up.

Bit of an FD fail here, turned into mini-fast as my dinner had more cals than i thought, i fancied some ice cream and nutella, then i was still hungry so had a couple of oatcakes. All in one extended meal so no snacking Grin, i feel nice and full now and it was only 1000 cals (ish).

missS quite a few of us have found our tums can go a bit topsy-turvey when we start on this woe. Keep your food as healthy as possible, eat it slowly (so you know when you're full- takes at least 10 mins) and enjoy. Plus try not to over-analyse every little twinge, you were probably experiencing similar things before 5:2 but didn't realise it :)

crazy8 · 07/08/2013 22:07

Please please please tell me where I am going wrong with this diet. I have posted before as I have lost maybe half a pound in 4 weeks of doing the 5:2 diet.
I am very strict with the 500 calorie fast days but eat what I want on the non fast days. I have jogged and walked.

I'm 44. 5"3' and weigh 9st11lb. I would really love to lose a stone but just getting below 9st would be amazing.

Talkinpeace · 07/08/2013 22:10

Missstrawb
glad you are still here
DH has pretty much stopped eating high fibre cereals
if he NEEDS to eat he goes for chocolate
or (if I am watching)
a couple of scrambled eggs
I've not been a fan of cereal type foods for years ..

Abra I remember you, and yes, you cannot utterly relax
because, the amount of food available is more than is healthy
I have been maintaining by keeping to 5:2 permanently but many of the meals at the end of the 24 hour fasts are nearer to 800 cals than 500
I recheck my TDEE periodically and try to stick within it

Talkinpeace · 07/08/2013 22:14

crazy8
sadly you cannot eat what I want
according to your stats your TDEE is just over 1800 : so you need to keep your food to (roughly)
Monday = 500
Tuesday = 1700
Wednesday = 1700
Thursday = 500
Friday = 1800
Saturday = splurge
Sunday = 1800

wrigglebum · 07/08/2013 22:18

crazy8, I think you might need to start tracking what you eat on NFDs if you're having no luck. With your stats you probably have a fairly low TDEE. Just track for a bit to get an idea of what you are eating vs what you should be.

alwaysanauntie · 07/08/2013 22:18

crazy8 looking very simplistically at your post, the problem may lie with "eating whatever you want" on non fast days. If you eat back the calories you save on fds, you wont loose any weight.

Do you track your cals on non fds? Also have you set activity level appropriately to calculate tdee? I have mine at sedentary even though i walk min 2 miles a day and do 30 mins of circuits 1 to 2 times a week. Also it can take a good few weeks for your body to get the idea, maybe give it another month?

If you're doing everything right and getting nowhere, it may be time to visit the gp to check there's no underlying medical reason for not loosing. And as with all eating plans, it may not suit everyone. I'm sure someone who's been doing this a lot longer than me will be along to help some more.

crazy8 · 07/08/2013 22:19

Thank you Talkinpeace. I am going to stick to what you have said. I am really serious about this diet. I am really hoping what you have said works. Aaaarrrrrggghhhhh!

Sorry.

crazy8 · 07/08/2013 22:20

Thank you wrigglebum and alwaysanauntie.

Pollysbubble · 07/08/2013 23:15

Successful fast day done for me Smile
Now for tomorrow and to see if I can also do a successful non fast day, but not totally splurge. Strangely I think I will find it harder just eating 'normally' rather than the strict 500 cal limit. Am currently downloading MFP app to track everything. From past experience I am hoping that just tracking everything will help to curb things a bit.
As seems to be the theme tonight - I think key for me is going to be getting into the habit of not just eating everything I fancy on NFDs.
Night all

postmanpatscat · 07/08/2013 23:41

well done trucks :)

NotAsTired · 08/08/2013 00:17

Super trucks.

How did it go today alwaysauntie?

Tomorrow is my last fast day before jetting off on Friday to an all-inclusive hols for ten nights.

saffronwblue · 08/08/2013 06:54

Hi all
I joined up at the end of the last thread. Today is my third fasting day ( in ten days) and am finding it a bit tougher as the novelty has clearly worn off!
Am drinking lots to ward off a headache and am hoping to start seeing results on a scale soon. I have a looong way to go!

What I do like is the flexibility to look ahead and identify days on which it will be easier to fast. I have also been out with friends twice and just ordered peppermint tea with no comment so have avoided making it into a big thing.

HairyPotter · 08/08/2013 07:17

Hello, Trucks that's a fantastic result. Well done. I started 3 days after you on 12/7 and am down 6lbs and feel pretty pleased with that, you must be delighted with 10lbs Grin

I'm finding I can't eat as much on NFD's, is that common? Went out for dinner again yesterday and only picked at my starter and left half of my main. I still feel full now so I'm planning a FD today instead of tomorrow. Will see how I feel later on but that's my aim.

Good luck to all today's fasters.

EagleRiderDirk · 08/08/2013 07:49

hairy yes, that is very common. and good really admit helps our body naturally control what we need to eat.

fasting with a migraine, anyone have any ideas? my fuzzy brain says maybe I should leave it (wasn't going to be fasting but meal plans have fallen through) but my body is saying it can't be bothered to go get food, and my brain can't really be bothered to think about food choices. though I'm df to a cake shop later so that may weaken me Wink

wrigglebum · 08/08/2013 07:49

Yes, my ability to pig out has definitely decreased. I seem to be leaving a lot more now, whereas before I would have ploughed through to finish the plate.

Is everyone else so pleased with this woe that they can't understand why everyone isn't doing it? I was reading a thread on losing baby weight and had to post about 5:2! All the people grumbling they couldn't lose weight because they couldn't exercise, I just kept thinking 'try 5:2'. Ok, I've started shred now (again, why isn't everyone doing it?!) but that's more for toning and the weight was coming off before. If I mention 5:2 to friends it's always 'I couldn't do that, I get too hungry/shaky/grumpy'. I thought that but I'm fine. It's completely stopped me getting that shaky low blood sugar thing too. I love that I don't have to restrict any food groups and I can be flexible about when I do it.

Fast day today. Got some bovril for a quick savoury hit. Going to hang on until dinner to eat as that suits me so much better, for just under 500 cals you can have a really satisfying meal.

JB30 · 08/08/2013 07:52

Another FD here and food all set up for the day. Was planning a run this morning but couldn't drag myself from bed! Might give it a go later. Totm approaching with the usual associated emotions/tiredness.
Best of luck Thursday fasters, tomorrow we eat drink

postmanpatscat · 08/08/2013 07:52

wriggle you've turned into a 5:2 evangelist like the rest of us! I didn't tell anyone I was doing it and had lost about a stone before anyone said anything at work. Mostly my colleagues kept noticing all the new clothes I had to buy!

Hunger is not the enemy :)
