Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning.

Just wondered if anyone could tell me quickly whether I would completely ruin my 16/8 fast part if I had a coffee with a splash of milk now before my fast is up at 10am??

I am desperate for a coffee but my splash of milk would be about 65cals.

I cannot drink black coffee!! Help!

Dotty342kids · 07/08/2013 08:31

Glad to hear all's ok with you hitc and that you're still safely in the 9's! Have a brilliant holiday!

EagleRiderDirk · 07/08/2013 08:31

mrsf that's quite a large splash. a couple of teaspoons of full fat should only be about 7 cals. I'd say to not have it if there's going to be that much milk involved. if you were having a small amount, so the cals were under 10 though I'd say have the milk.

MrsFlorrick · 07/08/2013 08:43

Eagle. Thanks. I was guesstimating my splash and I thought a tablespoon full would be circa 65cals ie 90ml.

Hohum. That is what I thought. I get stomach ache if I drink coffee with insufficient milk.

Only another 1h and 18mins till coffee then. Wink

EagleRiderDirk · 07/08/2013 08:53

ah OK mrsf
though 1 tbsp should only be 15ml so just over 10cals (assuming you are using full fat). its your call there I'd say. depends on whether you are going to feel better for having it.

swallowedAfly · 07/08/2013 08:55

90ml would be 3 of those little medicine cups that come with cough medicine.

i'm 10.3 this morning - that is the top of my acceptable bounce zone so need to watch myself. also need my damn period to come so i cease to get these ridiculous late night carb and sugar cravings.

MissStrawberry · 07/08/2013 09:31

Morning all.

I can't believe it is only half nine.

Just realised I haven't thought about food until a few minutes ago when I was hanging out the washing. I am still not sure what I am doing as I don't eat 3 meals on normal days but I think just concentrating on only eating when I am genuinely hungry, and not by the clock, is going to be a good way for me. I need to stop eating when the clock says, because I am sad, because I am bored, because I am tired etc etc and just eat when hungry.

MrsFlorrick · 07/08/2013 09:36

Eagle. Ah. I see. I was over estimating the milk calories I was using.

I decided to leave it and its only half an hour to go now anyway.

I am drinking jasmine tea instead. Nice but not quite the caffeine hit I am craving (long night both DC had me up at various points so less than 4 hours sleep total argh).

Yesterday I managed a sort of mini fast day and managed with just under 1000 cals during my window.

So today I am planning to eat normally once my window opens at 10. Grin

I hope to slip below the magic 170lbs by middle of next week (currently 170.9). I would say by the weekend but I am
Planning to drink wine on either Friday or Saturday so it may result in some gains there Grin

MelanieCheeks · 07/08/2013 09:45

Some lovely herbal teas out there - I keep a selection for variety on fast days. My current favourite is Liptons Morrocan spice and mint - really satisfying, and you can close your eyes and pretend you're sipping it in a silk tent in Marrakech.....

swallowedAfly · 07/08/2013 09:45

i think you made the right call mrsF. as i understand it is from 12hrs onward that the real benefits start and that your body turns it's attention inward for energy sources. to interrupt that, albeit with just a few calories, with so little time to go would be a shame imho.

Gilbertus · 07/08/2013 10:31

Weighed myself this morning and despite a NFD yesterday plus wine I am still just under 11 stone Smile I 'stick' at 11 stone so really hoping I can get clear of it in the next couple of weeks.

MrsFlorrick · 07/08/2013 10:32

Melanie. Yes. I do love teas. Got some Pukka teas which were lush. I want to try that Moroccan one though. Where did you buy it?

Swallowedafly. Thank you. I think it did make the right call. And 16:8 isn't that hard. The other mornings I have been very happy with herbal tea. However lack of sleep made me crave a caffeine hit.

Fast about to be broken with a mocha at the coffee shop but I did less than 1200 cals on Monday and 1000 cals yesterday and I have stuck to 16;8 so being bad and having a treat. Smile

Hope you are all doing great today.

Missstrawberry. I hope your DC are good for you today!!

swallowedAfly · 07/08/2013 11:27

fwiw mrsF before a while into this wol i could never have imagined drinking black coffee. then i wanted the best out of my fasts without a caffeine headache so i tried it and found if i added a bit of cold water it was alright. now if i try to drink coffee with milk in it tastes like a milkshake or something. nowadays i only drink coffee with milk when i'm say in a meeting and starving/low on blood sugar and i add a spoon of sugar and it feels like a light meal Grin

it may surprise you how your tastes change.

MissStrawberry · 07/08/2013 12:55

I am slipping into weighing myself too much as I weighed myself again this morning. Still 12st 2.2 though which I am pleased about as I did have cake yesterday.

DS1 made pancakes so I had a saucer sized one and lunch was leaves, goats cheese and 4 pieces of salami topped off with French dressing. Dinner will be a macaroni cheese I bought last week when I wanted a treat and haven't got round to having it.

DCs much better than yesterday but still haven't quite got the message yet that Mummy means business.

berri · 07/08/2013 13:41

I have a 16:8 question...do you start your count from your last food, or your last drink? For instance I had dinner last night at 7pm and no further food, but was drinking wine until 10pm....Grin

BsshBossh · 07/08/2013 13:46

I count from wine (the last sip)

frenchfancy · 07/08/2013 13:54

berri wine = calories = food. So you can drink liquids during your fasting period as long as they are zero cals.

Pollysbubble · 07/08/2013 14:01

Hello to all!

MissStrawb glad to hear it sounds like today is an improvement on yesterday so far!

2nd fast day of the week for me today and so far so good - although don't really have a plan for tonight's dinner, so could all go spectacularly wrong!!

Yesterday was a non fast day, but think I went a bit overboard with the treats... I think it is time for me to start tracking my cals on NFDs as otherwise I can feel that I might get into a binge/fast cycle which is not the idea at all

berri · 07/08/2013 14:19

Thanks Bssh & FF, thought as much Grin

thaliablogs · 07/08/2013 15:04

Hi from holiday, marking place on new thread. Have not fasted since Friday but done a couple of 16:8s and trying not to snack, although it is hard as I have one of those starving but small portion-eating four year old boys who needs something to eat every 3 hrs or so or he falls over, esp when running in and out if the water all day. The sight of my size 8 SIL in a bikini is good for motivation though!

Hope everyone else is doing well.

MelanieCheeks · 07/08/2013 15:04

Moroccan tea is by Liptons, available in Sainsburys, and probly other supermarkets as well.

Struggling a bit today - had my lovely Dowe Egberts caramel flavoured coffee for breakfast, but was nauseaous hungry mid morning so allowed myself a mini babybel and a pack of Ryvita minis (130 cals together). Usual miso soup mid-day, but now I'm back home on a half day. DH fancied some pate on crackers for lunch, so I had a quinoa crispbread (15) with a sliver of Edam (35) to accompany him. He's heading off on a bike trip for the weekend, so I'm telling myself if I just get my head in the game and get through today, I can eat and drink what I like for the next few days. I've even done an inventory of the freezer and started a menu plan to use up some of the forgotten tins at the back of the larder.

I've got a tin of butternut squash soup (150 cals) lined up for tea, and I'll be going Scottish dancing tonight to keep me busy.

I can do this. I can do this.

Badvoc · 07/08/2013 15:09

Can I ask what effect this woe has on cholesterol please?

Talkinpeace · 07/08/2013 15:12

www.52fastdiet.co.uk/medical-conditions-f30/topic3506.html

reduces it

olivo · 07/08/2013 15:51

Hello. Am wondering about doing the 5:2. I need to loose about 9 lbs. I am 10.2, would like to be about 9 1/2.

Do you think that would work for me, and do I need t oread a 5:2 book or can I just make it up, based on the links posted on here? I intend to start when I go back to work in September, no way I can do it while on holiday.

Off to read the rest of this thread now!

Breadandwine · 07/08/2013 15:53

After a year IFing, my blood results were described as the best my doc has ever seen!

(Probably meant - for a guy my age! Grin)
