Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Yesterday's fast day went really well and I had planned to wait until lunch time today to eat but when I got up this morning I felt quite fuzzy headed and a bit shaky. I wasn't hungry but ate breakfast as I had to go to work. I have felt like that on and off all day. I had soup and fruit at lunchtime and Chinese tonight. I still don't feel quite right. Anyone else have this? Not sure if I will fast again on Thursday or not. I couldn't put up with that.

Gusthetheatrecat · 06/08/2013 21:14

tiptoes in
I have decided to start IFing. I have been putting it off until I stop breastfeeding, but decided in the end that I was just making excuses. My baby is 9 months old (sniff) so only feeding a few times in every 24 hours, so I reckon I can just crack on.

Today was my second ever fast day. I am so surprised and pleased with myself for doing it. First one was Sunday, and that was Hard. But today I found it easier not to eat anything at all until dinner. I just had fruit tea and fizzy water, then when the girls had their tea I 'treated' myself to a cup of tea with milk. Just ate my ready meal dinner, and it was amazingly delicious.

My main problem is snacking. It is so interesting seeing how many times per day I would normally 'just have a little something'. Now I am desperate for a snack, not because I am hungry but purely out of habit. I reckon if I can break that habit then it will be amazing.

I am 5'6" and probably at least 2 stone heavier than I want to be. My husband is IFing with me, and we are weighing ourselves in kilograms as I've found I feel less emotional about numbers in kg than in stones! We are giving ourselves a preliminary 8 week period to do 5:2, and if it's working and we find it do-able then I just tentatively suggested to him we should do it until Christmas.

Talkinpeace · 06/08/2013 21:24

Gus
Welcome, and yes, the real magic trick is
NO SNACKING ever ever ever Wink

Lizzabadger · 06/08/2013 21:24

Good luck Gus!

Breadandwine · 06/08/2013 21:34

I just ate cake.

Good for you, MissS! You deserve a treat.

I just made a cake since reading your post! Grin

'Cake in a mug' - which I've refined so that it's 'Cake in a cereal bowl'.

Calorie counted - 170cals for a 50g piece (a quarter) - and made in 6 minutes 56 seconds.

So if you keep your dinner calories down below 330, folks, you can have a piece of this gorgeous cake for afters - even on a fast day!

I had a third and the other two thirds are in the freezer! NFD for me today.

Auntie we (my wife and I) are hoping for a girl - mainly because the dad wants Stirling, or Monty if it's a boy! :(

Why Michael, may I ask? (Good enough name in my book.)

Good luck, Gus!

Gusthetheatrecat · 06/08/2013 21:34

Thanks both. I am still in shock at how much I snack. If you'd asked me, I'd say I snacked a bit but not too much. Turns out I snack ALMOST CONSTANTLY. (and am also rather overweight. Mysterious...)

I am also finding it liberating discovering that it's ok to be hungry. Yes, I am hungry. No, the world has not ended. I have not fallen down dead. I really hope I can keep this going and just get used to being hungry some of the time without that feeling of panic, "What am I going to eat next? when? Quick! Eat more!"

NotAsTired · 06/08/2013 21:40

Jinty is it totm or are you coming down with a bug? Just a thought. Also, how well had you eaten on Sunday?

gust hello and welcome. Yes, fast days does get easier. Snacks. Try to have a no snacking policy say in the afternoon or evening and then extend it to the rest of the day. I was a huge snacker but now I rarely snack, and I've only been doing this since June. It IS doable. I normally reach for a drink when I want to snack. I know other people have a policy of waiting for 15 minutes and then 15 minutes more to stop themselves snacking.

NotAsTired · 06/08/2013 21:52

B&W. Love the cake but DS does not like chocolate (weird, I know). Do you think we could make the cake and leave out the cocoa?

Talkinpeace · 06/08/2013 21:57

another non chocolate person here Grin

Dotty342kids · 06/08/2013 22:03

What is this "no chocolate" thing you speak of? Grin
Could not imagine not eating chocolate. That would be sooo weird! So, just try to eat less of it!

Talkinpeace · 06/08/2013 22:09

now you understand the cheese habit Grin

Purpleshoes · 06/08/2013 22:17

Seem to have made it to the end of my first ever FD without collapsing with starvation! Probably not wise to combine first day with a late night dentist appointment which then was hour late so couldn't eat my dinner til 9pm but proud made it through on 500 calories and off to bed now without that evening choccie treat I always have. Day off tomorrow but will try not to overindulge :-)

alwaysanauntie · 06/08/2013 22:20

B&W after Dr MM if course!!! As thanks for helping so many of us to change our ways... Joking aside, I quite like Stirling (1/2 Scottish and a fan of motor racing), Monty however is a dog's name in my book Grin. Anyway, s/he wont be loved any less no matter what the name (& you could suggest they save the more unusual choice for a middle name?). Exciting times ahead for your family...

Jinty64 · 06/08/2013 22:32

NotAsTired not TOTM - think I'm done with all that! I don't feel as if it's a bug, just strangely shaky/wobbly - but only slightly now and head not so fuzzy. Quite stressed at the moment so ? Could be anxiety/all in my head.

B&W I like Monty.

BsshBossh · 06/08/2013 22:38

Welcome Gus. When I worked out I consumed over 500 cals a day in snacks alone - well, that was enough motivation to stop snacking right there. I don't eat between meals now and it means a) slightly larger main meals b) really appreciating those meals because I have worked up an appetite for them c) not giving in to every hunger pang (which isn't really true physical hunger at all. I tried not snacking before I started IF-ing but failed; 5:2 had to come first for me, then no snacking naturally followed.

NotAsTired · 06/08/2013 22:40

Oh ok jinty sorry, Blush. Yes, maybe stress related? Or a combo of stress and fasting? I feel like that sometime if I have not been sleeping well. Anyway, hope you feel better tomorrow. And whatever stress/anxiety you are experiencing gets sorted out.

NotAsTired · 06/08/2013 22:43

Well done purpleshoes Smile

HairyPotter · 06/08/2013 23:00

Gosh this thread moves so fast!

Weighed myself this morning and was delighted to lose another 1lb to bring my total in just over 3 weeks to 6lbs. Grin It has, on the whole been pretty painless. I love the flexibility, my Monday fast had to be prosponed until today, but I still managed to eat and drink what I wanted on my trip to the Edinburgh Fringe yesterday. Any other diet would have been ruined.

A small nsv yesterday as well, my far too tight size 14's don't feel as tight now. Grin

Sorry for the all about me post, I'm off to read from the start. Good luck to everyone fasting tomorrow.

Lizzabadger · 06/08/2013 23:02

Good work HP!

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 06/08/2013 23:39

Mark place to read later...

headintheclouds · 07/08/2013 00:15

hi all newcomers and dotty hello .Still here ,reading everything but not getting time to contribute much. ive had a busy couple of weeks entertaining but still managing to fit the fasts in. Only maintained this week but still 9 st 13 lbs- so 17 lbs gone .
Im off to Turkey for my annuals next week and Im a bit apprehensive about how Im going to cope by NOT fasting. I really dont want to fast on holiday..so Ill just try and not go too crazy at meal times! When I return Ill tackle the next 14 lbs!
Another one here who could take or leave chocolate! but give me a dish of dorito chips with a selection of tex- mex dips , or cheese .
Having said that I did just make a malteser traybake for my house guests at the weekend and it was gorgeous..only 297 cals Per piece,so just about ok on a blowout day.See thats the great thing about this WOE for me ,I can still eat crap occasionally on a NFD and maintain my lowest weight in years ! Its a no brainer

Jinty64 · 07/08/2013 05:05

Thank you NotAsTired just "saying" it out loud made me feel better. I've been awake since 3am and the shaky/wobbly has gone. Going to try for an hours sleep before work. I have negotiated shorter working hours, after asking for more than a year, so things are looking up.

ceebeegeebies · 07/08/2013 07:03

Bread&wine - you have just reminded me of the phone call with my mum after my 20-week scan when i was pregnant with DS2. i told her we were having a boy (the scan had been VERY clear Wink ) and she said 'thank god for that, the name you had chosen for a girl was bloody awful' Grin Shock

Accidentally had a blow out day yesterday as i was going out for lunch with colleagues so i planned, had a mini fast till lunch and chose food carefully...and then it all went pearshaped and i had a pudding, came home and ended going out with DH and the DC for another 3 course meal Shock Shock

unsurprisingly, am on a FD day today and boy do i need it!!!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 07/08/2013 07:21

Welcome new people!

Sorry about your rough day, MissS. Kids are terrifyingly expert at pushing our buttons, it'll pass.

Failed fast day here. I'm a week into solo parenting two under five, the toddler woke up four times last night, and by 1 pm (it's a work day) I thought sod it and bought myself lunch. I'll still have my light dinner, and try again tomorrow or Friday.

JB30 · 07/08/2013 07:46

Morning all. Lovely and sunny this morning, hopefully I can reflect that in today's humour. Good nights sleep thanks to my run so it's a better start to the day straight away. Not particularly hungry after FD - might do a 16:8 with something tasty for lunch. As long as I don't crack and am found in the corner sucking on a twix come 11am Grin I haven't gone near the scales since my bingey weekend, quite frankly the thought is not appealing. Might leave it away for a week and aim to have a really on track week, no snacking, bit of exercise, 4:3 & 16:8 interspersed. FD tomorrow and then mini'ish FD Saturday. That's the plan anyway.
Not surprised you cracked Tortoise the night waking used to kill me. 2 under 5 is tough, when my 2 were like that I was mainlining white toast & bikkies. You're doing great, as you said you can do another day
