Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Wow, some really inspirational stories on here since I last checked in.

Only managed one fast and a mini fast last week but had a great fast yesterday. Lasted til 8pm on just water and 3 cups of coffee with skimmed milk. Now not fasting til Thursday.

Still only 3lbs down in 4 weeks but I haven't been great on my NFDs so am pleased with that especially as before I was putting on weight at about 2lbs a months.

Going to keep going as I am at the moment and then up it to 4:3 when I go back to work. No more kids meals to make me feel like I'm missing out. Am working Mon, Wed and Friday so those fast days should work quite nicely.

Keep posting the success stories, they're great to read. And good luck to all those fasting today.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 20/08/2013 13:02

Eagle how fab!
Thanks for all the success stories!
And the nice feedback! :)
Mrs F come and Shred with us. I swear it feels quicker every workout. I'm on level 3 now and it flies by.
I really do think it works so well as building muscle and strength helps posture, so you look slimmer, waist tightens, appetite decreases and you burn fat just by being more muscular and toned. And if weight stalks you get leaner and tighter so the scales don't matter so much...

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 20/08/2013 13:25

Stalls not stalks dyac

HairyPotter · 20/08/2013 14:12

Hello, some amazing losses so far. I'm nearly six weeks into this and I'm down 10lbs Grin I've completed the 30 day shred and have dropped a dress size as well.

Another 1lb down and I'll no longer be obese! I've a long way to go before I'm a healthy weight mind you. I restarted the shred again and had planned to follow Natalie but after 2 mins realised that wasn't going to happen! Hmm

Good luck to all today's fasters.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 20/08/2013 17:20

Just put pics on profile, unfortunately they are upside down.
I am a bit crap at this.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 20/08/2013 17:21

WELL DONE on doing SHRED!!!M

Yay! What's next? Grin

Breadandwine · 20/08/2013 17:26

I know there are several vegans on the thread - I've just posted a week's vegan menu on my blog, most of them suitable for fast days:

nobreadisanisland.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/a-vegan-weeks-menu.html

Breadandwine · 20/08/2013 17:35

Posted too early - meant to say just how good it is to read these success stories! Well done everyone!

Trucks it's not easy posting pics on Mumsnet - WildWater also has her pic upside down. I've got two pics up there, and tried to post some more, but I go through all the motions - and nothing happens. :(

About your nickname - am I right in thinking it comes from your child's (children's) main interests? Smile

angelabbie · 20/08/2013 17:42

oh my TandD you have an amazing figure what did you start at and how long has it taken to look that good!!

MrsFlorrick · 20/08/2013 17:46

Trucksanddinosaurs. Shred is great. I have done it this April and in may/June I did Jillians six week six pack.

The shred is better for me as its 20mins of hard core stuff which I can do if I give the DC the iPad and a snack then it will give me enough time to shred and a super quick 5 min shower.

Six week six pack is more hardcore and more results but its a 40min work out which you're meant to do 5 x a week. I just can't manage to keep a 2yo and a 4yo quiet for that long. They start squabbling.

So shred it is. I do recommend the other one if you have the time.

I have had a mega busy day and have done so well. Only 369 cals so far and I did my 16;8 so didn't eat till 11am. Buuuut I want wine! I know it's Tuesday and I normally wouldn't ever during the week. However DH is at a fancy corporate dinner do tonight at a swanky top Michelin starred London restaurant tonight and I am sitting here with my soup and feeling sorry for myself.

I know I am justifying it and the whole point of this is that I don't want to be mrs fattypants anymore. But still I am not in swanky restaurant. I will be bathing DC and cleaning up after them.

Just want to point out that I didn't get fat drinking wine. I got fat from gestational diabetes and severe insulin resistance (2nd time - wasn't fat pre DC).

I know my above justifications are utterly pathetic. Grin I just want someone to say ooohhh poor you have a glass of wine.

MrsFlorrick · 20/08/2013 17:49

And did I mention DH is with celebrities?? And I'm not.

Can I have wine now??

Breadandwine · 20/08/2013 18:00

MrsF 100ml of white wine is 63 cals, whilst red wine is 83 cals.

If you sip it slowly, you may well be able to get away with one glass!

Grin
MrsFlorrick · 20/08/2013 18:13

Breadandwine. Sqeeee. You've made my day. Have Thanks or well Wine.

Tiny glass of white it is. Won't feel like the loser stuck at home with DC while DH lives it up.

By that maths, my day would still be a FD with 652 cals so would still be my best attempt at FD yet.

Still though I don't suppose it's the point of a diet to ditch circa 100 cals of healthy food in favour of rubbish.
Off to google medicinal effects of wine for further justification

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 20/08/2013 18:28

Woah! TrucksAndDinosaurs that is serious motivation for us beginners. Are you enjoying the changes you've made?

Breadandwine · 20/08/2013 18:36

When I first started 5:2, in Aug/Sept last year, I found, with 600 cals to play with, that I could have 100g of stout before dinner, 50g of red wine with my meal, plus a pudding.

Deprived? Not moi! Grin

(It's actually 66 cals for the white, sorry.)

TAD I forgot to look at your pics earlier, but I have now. And I can only echo what others have said. Brilliant!

BTW, dyac?

MrsFlorrick · 20/08/2013 18:58

Truckanddinosaurs. Just looked at your profile. Omg. You look amazing. I actually am utterly speechless. I want my body to look like yours.

Wow. Certainly shows Jillian Michaels knows what she is doing.

Shred restarts here tomorrow. Grin What inspiration I have been given on this thread Thanks to all of you.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 20/08/2013 19:07

Dyac = damn you auto-correct!

angelabbie · 20/08/2013 20:02

ohhh what celebs, what restaurant do share. I am also joining you with a glass of red, really need it tonight and have had a very healthy NFD.

BetsyBell · 20/08/2013 20:06

Swit-swoo T&D - you look AMAZING! I really must get back to shredding. I have been doing other exercisey stuff at least and my stomach muscles feel pleasingly close to the surface these days.

HairyP Excellent loss, well done - 'overweight' will zoom by and you'll soon be celebrating 'normal' Grin

BsshBossh · 20/08/2013 20:17

Trucks amazing! Do you have a before photo you can share?

Breadandwine I'm not vegan (used to be) nor even vegetarian but your weekly menu sounds delicious.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 20/08/2013 20:53

Thanks for comments about post diet/shred efforts. I have tried like mad to put up wobbly before pics but every time I load a new one previous ones vanish :-/

I will have another go later but Jillian is the boss. Nothing I've done has ever worked this well and this thread is the business for info and support Flowers.

My nickname is because of my DS interests although it should now really change to something Thomas Tank Engine related.

Those vegan ideas look yummy, thanks BreadandWine.
I eat low carb/ primal on NFD but always room for nice veg!

JB30 · 20/08/2013 20:57

Omg - Trucks, you look wow! I'd kill for that bod!
I need to do me a before soon, even more determined to get this transformation on the road! Stage 1, which I feel was top layer of blubber is now complete. Next 17 weeks, this game is ON!
16:8 with low'ish cals and a 2.5 run & 2.5 brisk walk. In 2 minds about tomorrow...think I'll do a decent 5:2 this week instead of a half hearted 4:3. Maybe a mini fast Friday to keep me honest Wink I love planning! Pity I'm a devil for deviating from the plan Grin

wrigglebum · 20/08/2013 21:18

Amazing pics Trucks. Right, I am determined to post some pics up when I finish the shred! I will get there.

MangoLangoTango · 20/08/2013 21:34

Been lurking for a while but wanted to say what an inspiration trucks!

Did my third FD yesterday, skimmed below 600 cals, still can't manage 500. Am not actually overweight yet but at the rate I was stuffing my face every evening after putting the kid to bed I will have been in a couple of months time.

Have gained 11 pounds gradually in the last couple of years and am pretty short with no muscle tone, so still look dumpy and flabby despite almost normal BMI.

EagleRiderDirk · 20/08/2013 21:37

Wow trucks - finally got on pc in order to have a sneaky look. What a body!
