Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Has anyone else been Angry or Hmm at how much time the mfp app spends synchronizing lately?

Gilbertus · 19/08/2013 18:31

Nothing until 5.30pm then small leftover bowl of fish and ratatouille. Figured that wasn't many calories so had a small tin of baked beans on a slice of bread (210 cals). Still starving and now very grumpy!

Gilbertus · 19/08/2013 18:34

When I started fasting I ate lunch and supper, now found it easy to go until 6ish with just tea and water. Occasionally if I am feeling a bit low and hungry I will have porridge for breakfast then supper.

changeforthebetter · 19/08/2013 18:56

Whoops. Chicken livers with garlic and Worcester sauce was good but 200g of livers was a bit too generous Blush

MFP puts me at 578 (it's a bit inflexible re portion quantities - unlike say, WW)

EagleRiderDirk · 19/08/2013 19:30

woohoo. made it till tea time. am now about to have my soup starter. love going several courses on a fast day!

Twinmama32 · 19/08/2013 19:50

Abandoned fd today, first time ever in 6months on this wol... 3hrs sleep, 6am wake up with dcs and my mum staying over meant I just couldn't hack it! I failed at half twelve Sad

Think I'm going to try again on Wednesday as I can't face tomorrow
I'm hoping my cals will be lowish today but the kids are playing me up tonight so wine could be had later....(actually already had a mall one with dinner! Blush

Hope everyone else's fd was successful today!

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 19/08/2013 20:11

I don't know classified, I imagine that, if you are already low on energy due to anaemia, it would make fasting more difficult. After all, if you have low energy due to tiredness, a hangover, totm, etc, fd's are tougher.

Have you spoken to your gp about fasting? It might be better to resolve the anaemia before attempting any weight loss.

classifiedinformation · 19/08/2013 20:30

No, I haven't spoken to the gp, I need to make an appt for something else so I will mention it then. Off to do my nightly swim soon, hope I can hack it!

MelanieCheeks · 19/08/2013 20:43

Changeforthebetter , mfp usually has measurements in grams so that you can type in exactly how much you ate.

alwaysanauntie · 19/08/2013 21:19

Good fd here, made it to 4pm before eating (a first for me) and have had sub 400 cals so v happy. Going to do mini fast tomorrow as having dinner at mum & dad's enroute to ferry & Ireland on weds (they're babysitting the dog Grin). Have a good week all, no idea if I'll get to post, happy fasting!

nocomplicationspls · 19/08/2013 22:37

My first fast day ever nearly finished! 2 hours to go. Have the fish & veg out ready to cook already. I have to say has been tough at points, with few periods of feeling really sick. This WOE is so appealing though. I have spent years trying & not keeping up with various diets. What has kept me going today has been imagining what I can eat tomorrow. And the funny thing is that mainly I fancy healthy foods, not junk. Like you don't want to eat crap after a great workout.

Don't have loads of weight to lose, but I would dearly love to be able to run around after my kids on the beach in a bikini/cossie without a care. Currently I dread holidays, as I always have really, for the exact reason that I dread this. Always having to have shorts/sarong to hand to save embarrassment beyond belief :-(

Great inspiration on these threads, thank you truly other munsnetters :-)

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 19/08/2013 22:52

FD and did Shred mid morning after shopping for size 12 jeans ( \o/ woo hoo! :) :) I was pushing size 16 end June) - then went til 4pm on green tea and water.
Had 2 cups steamed green beans with soy sauce and flaxseed oil, rest of beans will go into chicken curry with spinach for tonight.

fluffypillow · 19/08/2013 23:43

2 stone gone as of today! Started 23rd April (17 weeks in). LOVE this way of eating. Gone from 13st 4lbs to 11st 4lbs . Size 18 to size 14. Couldn't be happier.

I need to lose another 4lbs to be just within the 'healthy BMI ' range. My final goal is to lose a total of 3st, and get down to 10st 4lbs. I feel in no rush to do this, and will enjoy the rest of the summer hols, keep up my fast days, and have some lovely treats along the way too!

5:2 is brilliant, it's changed my life. DH has lost 3.5st too, so happy with that...........5.5 stone between us in 4 months.

Good luck everybody!

nocomplicationspls · 19/08/2013 23:53

Fluffypillow that is amazing! Well done you Smile you are an inspiration.
Dh just preparing our tea - okra baked in a lovely spicy passata with white fish. I have a new reverence for food after having fasted for 24 hrs. Never before have I looked upon a vegetable with such awe and longing! I sound nuts I know Wink Could this be the beginning of a new way of life?!!!

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 20/08/2013 01:39

Wow fluffy that is
fab-u-lous! Wow wow!

EagleRiderDirk · 20/08/2013 07:02

Way to go trucks and fluffy!!!

It was my 4 monthiversary (I'm sticking with this word Wink ) yesterday.
weigh in this am = 157lb, down from 209lb.
waist = 31in, down from 44in. haven't measured under belly button but the shrink there is out of this world.
shoe size = 6, down from 7Hmm .

bmi = 26, down from 35 (not 37 as I'd claimed before, not sure where I got that from).

clothes size = 12 top/14 bottom, down from 20.
pernicious anaemia crash = last week of jab cycle, down from 4-6 weeks before end of cycle
exercise level = lots of walking, 100+ squats plus arm exercises twice a week, cross trainer twice a week - up from short burst of walking and crippling pain.

safe to say I love 5:2. no more proper fasts till next Thursday now but will most likely mini fast or 16:8 this Thursday. bank holiday weekend is too full of booze and eating so may fast next Tuesday for my livers sake!

postmanpatscat · 20/08/2013 07:31

trucks fluffy and ERD you are inspirational! Flowers Dr M should be on 'The men who made us thin' as the only one with something that works and is sustainable!

No fasting for me on hols, but nothing between breakfast and dinner most days apart from a mocktail - had a scrutinising look in the mirror yesterday and I don't think I've gained weight. There are scales in the gym here but I do not want to use them! DP has but his weight fluctuates a lot more than mine anyway.

JB30 · 20/08/2013 07:48

Morning all. I wish I could say in 17 weeks I had lost as much as some. With fluctuations it's roughly 10 pound. I am seeing a good difference in clothes though. I need a dose of consistency! That's the medicine.
Big hats off to those who really put their all into it. Inspirational Wink

wrigglebum · 20/08/2013 08:05

Amazing success stories, I feel so incredibly proud of you all (is it odd to feel proud of people I've never met?). You must all feel so happy.

My weight hasn't shifted in a couple of weeks but I'm definitely getting leaner. My size 12 jeans are now falling down and I got into a pair of size 10 jeans on Sunday (ok, so they were Fat Face where the sizes are massive but then a few months ago I would have struggled to do up a size 12). It's probably not worth posting clothes due to postage costs, but if anyone is near Bristol and would like some size 12 Gap and Tommy Hilfiger jeans then let me know!

I'm away and at the mercy of whatever I'm served, so not the best eating but I'm just trying to not have big portions. Oh well, I'll make up for it next week. Can't wait to shred again either, got one more L1 session then I'll get stuck into L2. I'm walking loads being away but I'm really twitching to do some proper exercise!

BsshBossh · 20/08/2013 08:21

trucks, fluffy, ERD, JB - all great losses. Hurrah!

64zoolane · 20/08/2013 08:33

Morning. Fast day today and I've got a bit of a cold. Does anyone know the calories for Boots Breath Easy Pastilles? They're like Olbas. Thanks.

BetsyBell · 20/08/2013 08:43

Wow, well done everyone! Lots of loveliness on the thread this morning Smile and Flowers to you all.

Congratulations to Silverbeetle for crossing over to maintenance. Are you going to put up some inspirational pictures for us?!

I finally did a weigh in this morning: 3 fasts after my holiday and I'm back to my pre-hol weight, despite eating ENORMOUS quantities of food on Sunday Grin

I haven't been around on here much lately as I seem to be redecorating my whole house for the summer - I've been taking the same approach with it as I normally do with exercise - get on with it first thing before I wake up enough to think about doing something else!

So no Jillian or running since I got back, but lots of painting, cleaning and moving furniture around. Luckily I've now run out of paint so I'm giving myself a couple of days off before I restart.

swallowedAfly · 20/08/2013 08:59

well done betsy Smile i'm doing similar with the house this year. have pretty much completed the bathroom now (little bit of second coating to some woodwork in hard to reach places to do) and am tackling all the grubby woodwork in the lounge next. doing lots of furniture building and moving here too so hopefully we'll be getting some muscle tone along with improved homes Wink

still sat at 10.3 this morning so holding my own despite no real fast days. just under two weeks till i'm back at work and busy and moving more and fasting again and hopefully not long after that i'll see those 9's again.

well done and much kudos to those who are keeping at it despite being at home and with the children through the summer holidays.

EagleRiderDirk · 20/08/2013 09:51

ooohhh just dawned on me that I'm taking a short 5:2 break after losing 52lb. well that seems the perfect figure to half at momentarily Wink

MrsFlorrick · 20/08/2013 11:06

Eagle!!! That's amazing!!! Wow!!

Congrats mate. Incredible. Thanks

Your waist is what I want.....

Words fail me actually. In 4 months. And I faffed around with low carb for 7 months this year and despite being very strict I lost less than I have in a couple of weeks of this.

Sad When I think I could be at my goal/old pre DC weight wearing my old clothes (my beautiful wardrobe sigh) now if I had gone for IF at new year instead.

Good news is that after my blow out junk food Saturday, I did a sort of fast of 700 cals yesterday and this morning the pesky 3 lbs had vanished. So back to where I ended last week. Please keep your fingers crossed that I can do really well this week. My mini goal is to get under 160lbs mark in the next 2 week.

Must start shredding again....

Been reading up on that Leangains website. It's very interesting. I don't know about all this macro food cycling it sounds too complicated for now. May yet get desperate enough to try it. It advocates weight lifting and strength training. I see how that would work well.

I am still sticking with the Shred as HIT is meant to work well with IF.
