Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

b&w I dunno, the boobs may suit you Wink

Lizzabadger · 16/08/2013 18:25

Looking great Eagle !

MissStrawberry · 16/08/2013 19:10

peplum41 - I definitely intend to have it soon Grin.

All day I have had 2 small slices of edam cheese, 1 chip, 2 small pieces of pasta and a lardon to check it was ready and water and a small cup of coke. I am not even starving so wonder if this is how it should be. Why have I been stuffing my face thinking I had to eat the second I felt hungry (as panic would set in) when I haven't eaten anything proper since last night??

Ah at shoe shopping. I have always been very strict on where I buy my children their shoes from (an independent shoe shop) and last year it cost me £310 for 9 or ten pairs (with discount). Being fussy and buying decent shoes has paid off though as DD and DS2 are in need of treatment and it would have been a lot worse if I had been putting them in shoes that weren't any good. I really don't want turn this in to a bashing against those that can't afford more expensive shoes etc, it is more about me feeling I have done something right for once. In two weeks we'll be at the shop to buy all the shoes once the kids have the inserts they need.

wrigglebum · 16/08/2013 19:55

Just checking in. Been very busy with nephews and niece here, not eaten the best but I have not slept well so needed carby sugary goodness Smile. FD today to make up for it, wanted to shred but got loads to do this evening packing for an early morning start. Heading back to see family via legoland, haven't told DS yet, he'll be so excited! Doubt I'll manage any fasts or good eating next week, oh well.

Amazing loss Eagle, you must feel so much better now and you look great.

AngieM2 · 16/08/2013 21:03

peplum nights are a revelation! I eat during my shift to 6am, though don't pig out, then go to bed, wake around 3pm and carry on not eating/maybe cup of soup til 1pm the following day. I'm chuffed to bits with it all.

Tommy · 16/08/2013 22:58

checking in here - have been away for last 10 days and not done the fasting thing. I aim to start again on Monday so thought I would weigh in after my second fast day - Weds probably. I'll let you know how it goes!

BsshBossh · 16/08/2013 23:58

ERD you look fabulous! Well done!

Itsaboatjack · 17/08/2013 00:38

FD today and I have had such a bad headache all day I can barely look at the screen so I will catch up on the goings on tomorrow.

hopefulgum · 17/08/2013 01:25

Wow, Eagle, that is an incredible weight loss. You look amazing. You must be so proud of yourself. Was all that loss is from 4 months doing the fast diet?

I am learning pretty quickly that the scales really are not my friend. Yesterday morning I was chuffed at having gone under 76 kgs (75.8), as I hadn't been under 76 for some time (my goal is 65kgs). In all the excitement I jumped on the scales again this morning and it says 78kgs (admittedly I have eaten breakfast, had all my clothes on and haven't been to the toilet yet). I felt incredibly disheartened. Then I tried on the new jeans I bought online - taking a punt at the size (a size smaller than I usually wear in that brand) and they fit very comfortably - perhaps even a bit loose at the waistSmile So all is not lost, and I think maybe my scales are crap, and that I shouldn't weigh myself so often, and I should not put so much store in actual weight.

A NSV I had yesterday was doing 50 laps in the pool! Yay! I usually do 40 and feel pretty pleased with myself, but it was easy to keep going, so I am extra pleased with myself. A bit Shock that I got stuck into some chocolate and banana cake instead of a proper dinner. Dh is away and I just couldn't be bothered. I know that was the wrong thing to do, I should not buy chocolate. But today is a new day and I plan to do better. Going to buy lots of yummy vege today, and planning Osso Bucco for dinner.

ihavenonameonhere · 17/08/2013 02:01

Well I felt better for most of the day and then had a migraine. I do think this is connected as I remembered last time I tried I had a similar reaction. I had totally forgotten I tried something similar before :( I do have a very sensitive stomach though

Hmm might try cutting down on rubbish rest of days and doing 800 cal on fasting days and work my body into it

alwaysanauntie · 17/08/2013 03:10

ERD i have to agree, fab photo! The majority of the 1.5 stone i want to loose is around my tum as well. Despite having lost 16 lbs my waist has only gone down a couple of cm, most seems to have gone from boobs :(

hopeful stay away from the scales! As others have done if you find it demotivating go by measurements & how clothes feel & just weigh once a month, put them somewhere it's a pita to get them & you wont be so tempted :)

noname sounds like a gradual approach is best for you. Why not try no snacking at all and start at 1000 cals for fds & work down? Better to start higher to not shock your body too much. Have you tried just 16:8 to get used to not eating in the morning? Could be worth a try as well so you get fasting benefit but not so much calorie restriction.

I'm awake due to dd having dodgy tum & requiring 2am nappy change, hope to get back to sleep soon or I'll be bloody starving all day...

MissStrawberry · 17/08/2013 09:09

Sorry to be a traitor but I did go on the scales this morning. Only weighing myself once a week though.

Last Saturday I was down to 12 stone from 12 stone 4lbs
Today I am 11 stone 12.2 lbs!!

Really really happy that I have lost weight for 2 consecutive weeks. I just need to lose 3 more pounds and I will be the same weight I was when my baby was 9 weeks old and I was 14 stone when I gave birth. Looking at me now if I had looked like this 2 months after giving birth I would have been happy.

My goal weight is 10 stone but I think that might be too low or too ambitious.

Now, advice as to what to do for the next few days. I am going away Mon-Wed with the children alone. Driving from Kent to Yorkshire and back again so don't feel I can fast while away (plus visiting friends and they want to take us out and like to feed us up) so should I fast on Sunday or wait until Thursday? And if I go too long without a fast will I put weight on again?

Have done 3 fast days since last Friday, Fri, Mon, Fri but didn't have any days where I ate my full calorie total.

vintage52er · 17/08/2013 09:30

MissS if I were you I'd do a fast on Sunday and then also on Thursday, that way you can go for your break and not have to think about it and enjoy yourself.
Well done on the weight loss it's a very good start.

JB30 · 17/08/2013 10:10

Morning all. Hasn't been a great week fast'wise or calorie'wise in general. Pulling myself back into line with 2 x tdee's - attempting a FD today or tomorrow just would not work. Monday will be my day I reckon Smile I am fighting with my scales, I appear to have gained 2 pound from last week, working hard not to get hung up on it. It's not a mystery as to why as behaviour over the last 1.5 weeks hasn't been great, although I have been exercising regularly and better behaved than in the past. Clothes still looking better on me than before this WOL so need to work harder on not letting the scale rule my life, but at the same time not slipping back to my old bingey ways.
Erd your pics are amazing, your dedication to the woe/WOL is shown in your results.
MissS that's a brilliant loss over the last couple of weeks. I'm sure your trip will be great, you seem to have discovered your off button with food, no reason not to bring it with you. We can enjoy eating out, doesn't need to mean pigging out (she sez?!? ) You've been soo good anyway, a bit of relaxation on that front won't harm you. Gains on this WOL seem
to reverse with a week or 2 of focus. Enjoy!

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 17/08/2013 10:53

I take all my whinging and self pity back. My waist might not have changed but I've lost 7lbs from somewhere :)

JB30 · 17/08/2013 10:59

SmileSmileSmile Helles! Amazing

catsrus · 17/08/2013 11:08

Well done miss - my weight goal was around 10 st too. Once I got there I decided to go for broke and went down to 9st 2 lb - been stable around that weight since easter now. As others have said, the key to this WOE working is to make the fasts fit with your life - don't fit your life around the fasts - I found it was as much about changing my ways of thinking abut food as it was about the calorie restrictions. Hard to believe that I would ever really feel I could eat whatever I wanted - but I really do feel that way now.

Just waking up after a night out last night with friends, I was the only one who had desert and thoroughly enjoyed it - they were all "oh no I mustn't ..."

catsrus · 17/08/2013 11:09

Yes well done hells!

MissStrawberry · 17/08/2013 11:32

Was inspired by my weight loss to walk to get the shopping. Took 83 1/2 minutes Grin. MFP says that is 261 calories burnt but am I right in thinking I don't eat an extra 261 calories.

I was thinking Sun and Thursday would be best for fasting so will do that.

Helles - BRILLIANT!!!!

I haven't been 9 stone 2 since I was 21 and was 9 stone 3lbs. Is there a realistic up to date place to find out what the best weight would be for someone of my height?

southeastdweller · 17/08/2013 13:31

Looking very good indeed there ERD. Such a startling contrast between the two pics.

Congrats to MissStrawberry and HellesBellesThinksSometimes Smile. Helles, are you feeling more motivated now?

Had a lovely time at the Ivy yesterday. Nicely buzzy atmosphere, attentive staff, and the menu's not that expensive - it's on their website if anyone's interested. Very much recommended for a special occasion. Shame we didn't any slebs, though! We had one main course each (I had the most gorgeous risotto I've ever had in my life), shared desert and some booze consumed. I look back now and feel quite repulsed about having two meals in the day as well as snacks and then going to have three courses at a restaurant...utter piggy madness.

Mini-fast today after a few days indulgence and a FD on Monday.

Gilbertus · 17/08/2013 14:30

Weighed myself today. Despite my last FD being last Monday and pigging out this week I haven't put on any weight. Amazed. Motivated to have two good fds next week.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 17/08/2013 15:40

Thank you :)

I was really frustrated that my waist hadn't reduced because I have a full zone between my current waist measurement and the healthy range for my height. I am really scared of get NIDD so, as much as I want to slim down and look nice, I really wanted to slim down to avoid type 2 diabetes - so the waist measurement is really important to me. The reduction in my weight is confirmation that I'm on the right track and very welcome as a result.

silverbeetle · 17/08/2013 15:47

Just popped in for a quick catch up - wow things have moved so fast!

Some fab losses reported, great stuff and ERD is it really you in both photos? I bet people don't recognise you - what a difference.

I don't post much these days but here's an update of my journey.
I'm 47 and 5ft 4in and have always struggled with my weight, especially after having 2 children. I thought that I'd never lose the baby fat and that middle aged spread was inevitable and that was my excuse as the pounds started to sneak on over the years.
Anyway, started at 12st.04lb in Feb and got loads of encouragement and support from the lovely people here. After a few weeks the FD and smaller portions became the norm and even snacking (thanks TIP) is all but distant memory except for holidays. My exercise just consisted of light dog walking but I tried to keep moving as much as I could throughout the day.

Anyway weighed in this morning at 8st.13.06 - that's over 42lb lost, so folks I feel I have finally ARRIVED and the journey wasn't too bad at all!!!! Grin Actually I'm a bit lighter than I want to be, feel and look better at 9st 2 but it gives me a bit of wine wobble room for the weekend Wink.

A big plus is, despite years of carrying many extra pounds my body actually looks OK, (apart from boobs but that's probably the children's fault and some toning needed on the arms). I'm not embarrassed of it anymore. Yesterday I joined a gym and am going to do some yoga classes as well and am so excited about this. I did my gym induction today in a pair of leggings and tight fitted vest top WITHOUT a baggy T-shirt over the top. I think the instructor thought I was quite vain as I kept glancing at myself in the mirror, it just didn't look like me, it looked like someone I wanted to be - very odd but really good feeling.

If I can do this anyone can, the advice on this site was invaluable so thank you, for any newbies here's my tips:

  • Stick with it through the plateaus, and they will come believe me, it will start coming off again once the body regulates itself.
  • Plan your FD meals and don't eat until the evening meal saving all your calories for a lovely satisfying dinner and pudding.
  • Start reducing the size of your NFD meals by having slightly less carbs but more veg (2 potatoes instead of 3, 1 spoon of rice instead of 2)
  • Try not to snack on NFD, - think 'I can have this BUT I don't want it' - this WOL is not depriving you, you are not on a diet, you are putting yourself in control or 'mind over cake' as I call it.

Of course this may not work for everyone but it certainly did for me.

Sorry, this has turned into a essay. Anyway going to make the jump to the maintainers thread now but will pop back from time to time
Keep up the good work Smile

MelanieCheeks · 17/08/2013 16:19

Great words of wisdom there silverbeetle

I popped into Boots today (picking up bits for our trip to Vegas next week), and they were offering free blood pressure checks. Mine was 100/58. The girl doing the test seemed concerned that it was low, and brought the pharmacist over to chat to me. Whe I told her I was 5:2ing, she scolded me and told me to eat 3 reasonable meals a day! I reassured her I will be eating that and more on me hollibobs.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 17/08/2013 16:22

Wow SilverBeetle I have 5 stone to lose so reading about your massive weight loss over the past six months is very inspiring. Congratulations :)
