Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

NoName that sounds quite extreme, it would be worth seeing your doctor to rule out any underlying health problems.

catsrus · 16/08/2013 07:23

noname That sounds like a simple case of a stomach bug - you ingested something that caused it either via food or something you touched. My dd had a similar 24hr bug this week - nothing To worry about and unconnected with fasting IMO

BetsyBell · 16/08/2013 08:01

hopefulgum

Thank you! As you're interested I'll give you long version...

I realised I'd piled on the weight at the end of the summer in 2011 - had no scales so somehow managed not to notice. Photo's from the summer told me everything I needed to know.

I decided I needed to cut out the crap - evening snacking went first - and make all my meals count, ie be as nutritious as possible, keep tabs on portion sizes etc.

I started a food diary as a google doc and shared with a friend so we could positively chivvy each other along (a bit like this forum). Looking at what I was eating on a spreadsheet was very important for me and I would see that if I'd overdone it some days then I'd need to eat less the next day - edging towards 5:2 without knowing it.

Exercise was added in mostly by upping my general day to day activity - fast walking or cycling to places, creating journeys for things that were further away to get more exercise. After a few months of this I feltmotivated to add in more exercise - did the couch to 5k programme - never was a runner of any kind before I did that, now I run because I enjoy it so much. I also do occasional bouts of exercise dvds and yoga -but never consistently.

Most of the weight was lost before 5:2 but I got stuck around 11 stone and needed a new way to push my body to shed more.

So from adjusting my lifestyle gradually but surely I have lost over 50lbs in less than 2 years. Weight that I will not now put back on as this WOE makes for very easy maintenance.

5:2 has made my eating even healthier and I'm drinking considerably less alcohol too. I've become far less dependent on carbs for energy and no longer worry when I get hungry. I am drinking a lot more coffee though!

Start weight, Sept 2011 - 13stone6, 188lb (85.3kg),

Dec 2012 - lowest non 5:2 weight was 10stone12 (152lbs)

Start 5:2 weight, Jan 2013 - 11stone2.8 (156.8lbs, 71.1kg),

Current maintaining weight - around 9stone11 137.lbs, 62kg)

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 16/08/2013 08:02

noname- that doesn't sound good, glad you're feeling a bit better though. Take it easy today as much as you can, look after yourself.

2 fasts done this week after the 3 weeks off, the result is...drumroll please...a massive 5lb down. I know it was all crappy fluid/fake weight, but happy with that. Was 10.7 Monday morning, 10.2 today, 9lb to go!

BetsyBell · 16/08/2013 08:03

Noname I would agree, that sounds like a stomach bug, loads of it around at the moment.

changeforthebetter It's good isn't it! Hold out till you are hungry and think of it as extending your fast. If you're like me you'll suddenly get ravenous about 10am!

EagleRiderDirk · 16/08/2013 08:38

noname I had a dodgy tummy for a while when I settled into 52 but nothing like that. Sounds like a bug or a nice visit from mr norovirus to me

Its not even 9 yet. I have a teething 10.5mo and a 2.5yo with no volume control or off switch. I'm contemplating necking some calpol to relieve myself, however I suspect it will be highly calorie laden. Oh well.

MrsFlorrick · 16/08/2013 09:32

Hello everyone! Smile

I have been lurking around. It's been a busy week with DC and doing full on DIY and decorating at night when DC are in bed. I am absolutely done in tbh. Hence not much posting here.

The really good news is that I managed a sort of a full on fast day yesterday. 660 cals in total. I am still doing 16:8.

And just doing 16:8, I have gone from 176.1 lbs to 166.9lbs in two weeks and two days (16 days or so) and that is with having weekends off. Ie eating when I want and drinking wine etc.

So I am impressed with 16:8. I found the fast day yesterday not good. I felt ill and I ended up with a serious migraine like headache and had to take prescription painkillers last night.

Perhaps I need to work downwards in cals more slowly towards a full fast day.

It wasn't so much hunger I felt but unwell. Also felt dizzy and like I was going to pass out. That did worry me as I was alone with DC.

Could it be that I need more cals than 500 for a fast day? Say perhaps 800? I know that goes against the 5:2 theory but surely feeling unwell to the point of passing out isnt the idea?

Any advice welcome.

I will continue with 16;8 and my fast days will be mini fasts with 1000 cals otherwise I just can't manage. Unless anyone else has advice?

BetsyBell · 16/08/2013 10:11

Hello MrsF Your first sentence holds a lot of clues - you're exhausted and house is presumably full of paint fumes...

Have you been drinking enough? You need to allow more fluids to replace the fluids you'd have had in food.

Are you eating around your TDEE on 16:8 days?

If it makes you feel more comfortable then do aim to eat around 800 but do also aim to work you're way down.

Or, if 16:8 is working out well for you then stick with that until you've got less going on?

MissStrawberry · 16/08/2013 10:26

Hello everyone

Can't remember what I did yesterday but calorie count was 1149 and today is a FD.

I have lost 16cm off my tummy since July 2012 and I am really Blush I was so much bigger.

Haven't had my macaroni cheese and pancetta yet but hope to have it today if it comes in around 500. Couldn't get pancetta (who knew M&S sold it at Christmas Hmm) so bought smoked bacon lardons instead.

Weigh in tomorrow.

peplum41 · 16/08/2013 10:30

HI chaps

Not been posting much lately, more of a lurker these days. But a couple of thoughts have tempted me out of lurksville.

Dotty, several posters on one of the other 5:2 sites (the good one, not the Dr M one), have mentioned that a couple of weeks of 16:8, has resulted in good weightloss when they've returned to 5:2. I thought you could try that while the kids are off school driving you mad . Atleast you're getting some fasty goodness time in if nothing else.

HellesBelleswhateversheiscallingherselftodayWink
You might find that your weight falls off quicker if you eat once a day rather than three, on FDs that is. There is something about going over 16 hours without food, seems to help re-right a lot of the wrongs our overfed western diet subjects us to. Its been covered well in some of the earlier threads.

mttum and postiescat, Im quite tickled by the fact that people like to report in from their holidays.

peplum41 · 16/08/2013 10:40

southeast the Ivy?? How exciting! You must review your evening here. I get excited about going to Mother Rednap's for a carvery.

changeforthebetter · 16/08/2013 11:21

Porridge with some flaked almonds and cinnamon and semi milk for breakfast, then one slice of wholegrain, seeded toast at 10. Nice Smile

I am quite tired despite an early night. I am still waking up 2 or 3 times a night and don't drop off again easily. I probably need more physical exercise. DDs playing nicely (for a change).

BsshBossh · 16/08/2013 11:35

Dotty don't despair. This is real life and if summer holidays with the kids are making it hard then accept that. 3 lbs gain is absolutely fine in the grand scheme of things. I've gained 2 lbs as I haven't managed to fast or regulate my food much on NFDs - too many guests, DD activities and DH off work for the next two weeks. I'm going to try and fast when I can and skip meals but I'll resume a solid weight loss routine when school starts up again and I get back to my normal predictable routine.

EagleRiderDirk · 16/08/2013 13:36

Well the rampant hunger of the last two days seems to have dissipated. Thank $^&* for that. Brekkie got me through to kid's lunchtime, but as they grumble louder than my tummy I deal with them first. Feeling nicely full after lunch now.

I am in desperate need of a nap however.

AngieM2 · 16/08/2013 13:48

FD yesterday, went well. First FD was 3rd July and today I'm 11.5lbs down, not been this size since pre-kids in 2000. Have tried for 13 years to lose my 'baby weight'! Dear god, if only I'd found this years ago, have spent 13 years feeling chunky, bloated and holding my belly in! Going away next week and plan to eat pasties, cream teas and drink wine and gin but hey-ho, September is around the corner and I'm going for another half a stone at least.

MissStrawberry · 16/08/2013 13:53

11lbs in about 6 weeks?? Shock. Well done you!!!

EagleRiderDirk · 16/08/2013 14:54

4 monthiversary soon (Monday, but I think I may be too busy over the next week to play with photo editing) so I have updated my progress pic. This one shows a bit of tummy, which is now pretty much where all my weight it now (hence still being overweight!).

MrsFlorrick · 16/08/2013 14:56

Betsybelle. Didn't fully update MFP this week so hard to say whether I ate my TDDe on some of the days.
It could have been paint fumes but more likely my shoulder. I have clearly strained it with all this decorating and it hurts like buggery right now.

Am supposed to be cleaning the ovens but am eating choc instead.

I certainly will today Grin!

I kept up the fast until 2:30pm (want to drink wine later tonight so later "window").
But in less than 20mins I have had a portion of Waitrose love Life Singapore noodles and a whole bar of Montezuma treacle tart chocolate (100g family sized bar!!!). Naughty.

Planning on making myself veg curry later and then Wine.

I hope you are all doing well today.

MissStrawberry · 16/08/2013 15:12

Looks like I might be nearer 600 for a FD as macaroni cheese on MFP has come in at 329 and I was going to add in M&S smoked bacon lardons.

peplum41 · 16/08/2013 16:06

Wow eagle, wow!! You look fabulous, people you haven't seen in 4 months must walk past you. I like your hair, what made you decide to change that?

Oh miss strawberry just eat it! Will do you the world of good. Smile

angieM2, well done. Yes I wish Id heard of it years ago. How are you getting on with the nights and fasting?

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 16/08/2013 16:55

Eagle you look like a different person. Well done :)

Tough day uniform shopping. DS has gone up into adult shoes so vat made shoes and trainers that bit more expensive.

He also discovered Game Workshop and wants to "borrow" £100 to start a collection of hobbit figures and go there every weekend to play (we live 30 miles away).

We had krispy kremes for lunch - the millionaire shortbread is totally worth a squillion calories! Now relaxing with a very small glass of perry while ds is out

BetsyBell · 16/08/2013 17:49

Eagle Your new pic is even more amazing than the last one! Inspirational :)

HellesBelles I am desperately trying to avoid the shoe shopping - my eldest (9) sort of dances as he walks and wear out the soles in 6 weeks or less.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 16/08/2013 17:56

DS got some playing out shoes 2 weeks ago - already holed the heel. It's a nightmare. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't such a faff but he needs measuring every time which means clarks. Which means a 20 mile journey to the nearest one with dedicated children's fitters.

Back to the thread, despite krispy kreme lunch, I am at 80% of tdee. I feel like I could eat something but what? Had an egg sandwich for breakfast (can you tell it's a nfd today?) so not egg.

EagleRiderDirk · 16/08/2013 18:02

Thank you all. I couldn't quite believe it myself (though there's a very good reason it is not a side on shot)

peplum Now that is a saga in itself... I change my colour like people change their underwear sometimes, but have a habit of trying to go lighter for summer and darker for winter. A family friend (who is a hairdresser btw) recommended me an at home kit that should just take my hair down a couple of shades. Well 60 mins later my hair had a reverse leopard print pattern and the only way of rescuing it was black dye or bleach. And if that wasn't bad enough, I then tried to put a pink dye over it, which only took to half the hair. So I ended up blonde with shorter hair. I'm sticking to products I know in future!

Breadandwine · 16/08/2013 18:07

ERD you look fantastic! I want to look like you!

Not really Grin - but well done you! Flowers

Just to say that I've posted on the Maintaining thread about my release from the Lung Clinic - and about how I totally put down my fitness and health to IF.

For all those posters who are thinking the maintenance thread is not for them - believe me when I say:

It will be!

See you over there - soon!Smile
