Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

well done helles and big Flowers to silverbeetle

peplum I can do without food but I can't do without checking in here!

missS you might surprise yourself with what you can achieve - I aimed for 8st 12 initially but now stay easily around 8st 4.

Aquaerobics in the pool every day is doing wonders for toning up my arms, but not something I could keep up at home.

Dotty342kids · 17/08/2013 20:01

ERD you look Amaaaazing, so, so good. You must be chuffed to bits with yourself!
SilverBeetle that is truly brilliant. I started the same time as you, same height as you (though started at 11st 8lbs) and have only lost a stone! i suspect it might be down to my sweet tooth and snacking habits...

Thanks for advice re. holidays everyone. I think you're right, I need to be kinder to myself about it and this week, when away camping, I'm definitely going to try 16:8s on a few of the days. I will avoid breakfast by having my morning shower whilst DH and kids doing brekkie.
On the plus side, I've managed a fast day today and it was fine as just kept busy then had a few nachos plus two spicy chicken tortillas for dinner and feel perfectly satisfied. Not sure it was completely under 500 cals but wouldn't have been too far off it so pleased with that.
Monday is the first day of hols and so might try fasting then as will be travelling / setting up camp so easy enough to avoid food until teatime Smile

BsshBossh · 17/08/2013 22:13

silverbeetle your post is truly inspirational! I will always remember you now when I resume strict 5:2 come the new school year. Massive Thanks.

ceebeegeebies · 18/08/2013 07:07

Morning all

Have totally fallen off the wagon Blush am hoping to get 1 fast and 1 16:8 in next week before my holiday and then I am going to focus on no snacking and lots of salad on holiday and then totally refocus on my return Smile

swallowedAfly · 18/08/2013 08:41

sorry - impossible to catch up i'm afraid.

just checking in. hopefully there'll still be people on here who remember when i get back into my fasting.

am sat at 10.3 this morning which is the upper limit i allow myself whilst having this 'maintaining' break so i need to be careful. am off out for lunch today with a new friend but it is a lunch that will come at the end of a good long dog walk and i'll try and pick something light.

i'm not only not fasting (bar my usual not eating anything till late in the day) i've also not been eating very healthily and am not getting as much exercise as when i'm working. i'm hoping that when i go back to work and fast again and get back into it i'll feel so much better that i'll be glad to be back 'on it' itms.

hope everyone is doing ok - big waves to newbies and to 'oldies' and any of my weight loss buddies of the past (who are all now probably a stone lighter than me due to my time out).

postmanpatscat · 18/08/2013 08:43

saf sounds like a good plan and you've got it under control...back in the 9s in September!

swallowedAfly · 18/08/2013 08:44

very much hope so postman Smile haven't you just been on holiday?

postmanpatscat · 18/08/2013 09:00

saf I still am...I'm sitting on my sunbed and there's wifi by the pool!!

swallowedAfly · 18/08/2013 09:03

oh lovely! enjoy x

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 18/08/2013 09:05

Morning all! Thought I'd check in after quite a mixed week for me. Well done to those who have lost, some great inspiration and tips on here :-)

So this week: no change on the scales. Positive news: I found that I can fast through til dinner as long as I'm busy at work - that's a new development, never been able to get beyond about 3pm before.

On the downside I've realised that there are basically two factors I need to tackle if this is ever going to work for me in the long term: booze, and boredom-eating.
Booze messes up my blood sugar and thus my eating urges both on the day itself and the day after. So I think the only way I'm going to make good and easy progress at losing weight is to cut out booze entirely for a while.
Secondly, and relatedly, I've realised a lot of my eating (and drinking) is boredom-related. When I run out of other things to do, it's my default setting. That means partic in the evenings I can consume a fair amount of unnecessary and un-nutritious calories in a fairly absent-minded way.

So there are two things I need to work on inside my head - hopefully if I can address those then life will become a lot easier, weight-wise. I've bought the CBT dieting book that was mentioned up-thread and am hoping that will give me some useful psychological tools. My default setting is that when the boredom-eating voices start talking to me, I'll put my fingers in my ears and hum!

Would welcome advice from anyone who's tackled a similar problem.

Dotty342kids · 18/08/2013 09:17

waves at SAF - don't worry, I've not lost a stone - far from it! Like you, am totally out of routine but about to go camping for week so am going to do a couple of 16:8 days and then get properly back in routine once kids back in school Smile

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 18/08/2013 09:28

feedfastfeast.com/2012/08/25/grabbing-the-bullshit-by-the-horns/

I don't know if you've all seen this but it answered a lot of questions I had.

swallowedAfly · 18/08/2013 09:31

waves back at dotty i will be with you once the school starts again. summer holidays are haaaaard! i may just be weak but hey. i've also realised i'd gotten really stressed out in a 'sneaks up on you' kind of way by the accumulation of health scares, redundancy scares and other stuff and some negative habits were sneaking back in with the food. even indulged in whole tub of ben and jerry's eating in bed a couple of times Blush

my tip depends if you have a partner somewhere - if you do and you're eating for boredom/pleasure at night my tip would be have sex instead. sounds like i'm being flippant but i'm not - far better to get the endorphines and satisfaction from sex than empty calories and exercise to boot.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 18/08/2013 09:41

Somewhere I realised a couple of years ago that drinking and evening eating made my life worse. For all the reasons you have given.

Now, if I drink on an evening ( very rare) the next couple of days are written off because I don't sleep properly, my ibs flares up, I have no energy and use food to top me up until the alcohol is out of my system. It's not as bad if I have a very small amount (a spritzer made with loads of soda and 125ml of wine) with lunch and have 2-3 litres of fluid between then and bedtime. It still affects my ibs though.

Re evening eating, I came to realise it is a result of tiredness. You want to stay awake, your body wants to sleep, you crave food for energy. Make a huge cuppa and take it to bed when you first crave a snack. Whether you have sex or not once there depends on whether you have the motive, means and opportunity Wink

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 18/08/2013 10:05

Thanks for the advice and comments :-) Sadly no opportunity for evening sex. I agree about the tiredness thing. I think it's because evenings are 'my time' so going to bed early feels like a punishment .... So you eat to stay up, and so on ... Vicious circle.

swallowedAfly · 18/08/2013 10:19

no, no opportunity here either sadly Grin would be definitely be my strategy if there was.

evenings are my definite weak spot too.

swallowedAfly · 18/08/2013 10:21

i do get what's being said about tiredness eating and it makes sense. with me though when i was really pigging out at night i realised it was actually an endorphine feel good hit i was looking for. if you binge on carbs you tend to get a nice serotonin hit and that feeling of satisfaction so for me the logic is to get that in other ways if you can. i haven't found a viable option.

i think i was actually eating myself to sleep at one stage - i was using food as a sedative almost.

JB30 · 18/08/2013 10:32

Morning all. Serious head nodding at the comments about night time eating & boredom. I found myself doing better when I stick with my rules, as on no drinking mon thru thur, no eating choc with wine on weekend, so if I want choc I must put down the wineglass and have a tea instead. But crisps and wine are my worse indulgence. I really need to tighten my rules cause I'm back eating 2-3 bags of crispsHmm I was down to 1.
Time to give one a kick up bum me think. On a 16:8, just finished 4 mile run Grin Have a great day u'all Wink

swallowedAfly · 18/08/2013 10:38

how anyone runs 4 miles is beyond me Grin and i'm no slug - i walk on average 8-10miles a day when working/school. but running 4 miles! kudos to you!

i suspect i need the same rule - re: not drinking mon thru thursday. alcohol is my downfall in so many ways. sadly though in the past when i've given up drinking i've ended up eating instead itms.

MissStrawberry · 18/08/2013 10:59

Morning all

I am fed up. Kids being horrible to each other and really rude to me. Due to go away tomorrow to see friends (DH not coming) for a few days and just don't want to go. Last time we went they argued over who slept where, wouldn't do as they were told. I was knackered, missing DH and had run out of energy and patience. I just know they are going to do the same again and just fed up of them misbehaving all the fucking time.

And it is a FD.

postmanpatscat · 18/08/2013 11:49

missS good luck with your fast. Could you leave the most argumentative child behind with DH?

berri · 18/08/2013 12:23

What about doing something exercise-related in the evening? Like a badminton club, swimming or even just walking in the early evening - will mean you don't fancy snacking beforehand and won't feel like it afterwards. Plus you won't want to booze the day before either if its something challenging! Wish I could take my own advice, sitting here with a hangover as I type!

headintheclouds · 18/08/2013 12:36

Hi All,
just thought Id check in from a Turkish cafe ( currently having a lovely meze and beers for lunch!) dotty never mind putting a bit back on- it will all come off when the kids go back to school and you're back in the zone! Im sure i will have to take that advice when I get back from Turkey. Im having such a good time here..trying to eat wisely ,but havent managed to fast at all..theres a set of scales in the apartment that Im resisting at the moment.Am dreading the post holiday weigh- in....BUT I refuse to be ruled by any WOE whilst on holiday..
Enjoy the camping ...

MissStrawberry · 18/08/2013 12:53

postmanpatscat - would be hard to choose. They all have their moments though it will be DS1 arguing over the bed Hmm. Plus DH is working and my friend wants to see all the children and I am hoping to meet up with someone else who I haven't seen since I was 8 and used to look after me.

Failed at the fasting as had a small place of roast dinner. It looked so nice, I did too much just for DH and DCs and I wanted it. DH said it was only 260 calories but I don't believe him.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 18/08/2013 13:03

Somewhere that's what I was doing! I do now go to bed at the first craving of food (tends to happen about 9) but I try to make it lovely so I use lavender linen spray and fabric softener. I use a lamp to read rather than the overhead light, I put some soothing music on the radio and I am usually asleep by 10 :)
