Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

MissS You've only eaten half your day's calories over 2 meals so that's just about right!

Fats are not the enemy, they are good for you in a variety of ways.

Salami is only 33 cals a (supermarket pack) slice, ham is also very low calorie - the wafer thin stuff is only 16 calories a large slice!

That lunch is a wonderful meal all round - keep that sort of thing up :)

But you don't now need to eat again until you're hungry, then eat something equally lovely for dinner and you've had a wonderful day's eating. Probably still under TDEE but with that level of good nutrition it doesn't matter.

Well done!

MissStrawberry · 14/08/2013 14:25

Blush.

I suppose I am used to my main meal being in the evening and after having bad stuff sometimes like chocolate, crisps or biscuits so it feels like 900 is the larger size of the pie. Keep forgetting I am on 1807 when I was on 1200 for a long time (and lost nothing).

No idea what dinner will be but potentially could be jacket potato. Feels like I won't want such a big meal after just having lunch but then dinner is around 7 so time I suppose to feel hungry.

IDismyname · 14/08/2013 14:38

Thanks TiP. I will quietly get on and log my food for a bit, and see where I get to. I hear what you say about the percentages. With any luck, I will figure it out. I think I need to tell myself that this is just for a temporary period, otherwise I'll struggle.

I chose this WoE for the health benefits, but still have a stone+ to lose, and I'd like to see the scales move downwards gently.

Just had huge salad of leaves, tomatoes, raw courgettes, a beetroot, 2 slices of bacon and a bit of mozarella. It was yum.

IDismyname · 14/08/2013 14:42

Sorry, Helles I missed your post to me upthread. I do sometimes think that I need to see someone, although to anyone in RL, I don't have a problem at all. I'm just a bit overweight.

(I'm fit, but I'm too fat!)

Who did you go and see to talk to?

EagleRiderDirk · 14/08/2013 14:56

Argh, I'm in one of those sooooo hungry but nothing is making me feel less hungry modes. I have some spare calories today but I don't want to waste them if eating isn't going to stop this feeling, I'd rather bung them on a dessert to go with dinner tonight so hopefully it will go away by bedtime. It's not even aunt flo's fault. These days suck.

Prawntoast · 14/08/2013 15:32

Hi, haven't posted for a couple of weeks I think, have finally finished unpacking all the boxes from our move and found the scales. I'm within 1lb of my lowest weight just before I went on holiday so pretty pleased with that as have only managed a couple of fasts since holiday (and didn't do any while away). Did realise while on holiday that although the fat has started to move what's underneath is very flabby so have dug out my old Jillian Michaels DVD's (I have a love hate relationship with her). Got serious NSV's with her a couple of years ago but wasn't doing this WOE so will be really interesting to see what happens with the combination of some serious toning exercise and 5:2, my arms ached so much this morning after "no more trouble zones" I could barely shampoo my hair. I know the scales are only a number but I had a bag of cat litter delivered today, it was 12kgs, when I lifted it I realised that's about what I have lost, it felt massive, so good to think I'm not having to haul that around with me.
Good to see so many new people on the thread, I have persuaded a couple of colleagues to start this, I'm going to shut up now as I'm wittering on!

Talkinpeace · 14/08/2013 15:46

Try variants of Salade Niceoise .....

Lettuce, tuna, cooked green beans, hard boiled egg, olives, anchovies, cherry tomatoes, croutons, vinaigrette : can be a light snack or a blow out meal ...
for kids you skip most of the lettuce and put pasta under it
for men you add more bread

to go gourmet you do fresh tuna and poached egg
for a change put chicken and tapenade in instead of the tuna and anchovy

salads done well are a thing of wonder
the old edition of this book www.bookdepository.co.uk/book/9781863964869?redirected=true&gclid=CMOisdGW_bgCFVDJtAodB2sAcQ lent to me by the cook where I worked was a revelation

MissStrawberry · 14/08/2013 15:52

That all sounds delicious. DS1 would want the lettuce and pasta. DD would eat all but the anchovies potentially. DS2 would try it all. DH would leave the olives. Definitely going to give it a go. I have seen tapenade but only used it once. Kids not keen so not bought since as not sure what to do with it.

Talkinpeace · 14/08/2013 15:57

I know I'm rather diverting the thread into recipes, BUT finding fun ways to eat healthily is really important ....
www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2011/04/french-in-a-flash-tapenade-baked-chicken-recipe.html

especially for those have been used to eating 'heavy' foods at their normal meals ...
once you get the hang of "main course salads" NFDs are much easier

MissStrawberry · 14/08/2013 16:19

That looks lovely, thank you.

MissStrawberry · 14/08/2013 16:20

I love salads. I just have been going wrong by not eating anything with them to keep me going.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 14/08/2013 16:37

NHS counsellor blue2 the eating problems were one aspect of the problems I was having. General treating myself badly - expecting too much of myself then hating myself when I couldn't live up to my unreasonable expectations. Women's Health Advisory Centres often have counsellors. Alternatively, you could go private - most private counsellors do a half-price initial session so you can decide if you want to work together.

Gusthetheatrecat · 14/08/2013 20:28

Sorry to dip in and out of the thread, but I'm just coming on to say that today was fast day no. 4 and I am literally incredulous at how easy it was. Everyone says they get easier, and I'll admit I was sceptical.... But today was so easy I almost didn't feel hungry at all.
I am finding it much easier to eat nothing all day (fruit tea for breakfast then I'll treat myself to a cuppa with milk at about 4 or 5) then eat my 500cals in dinner after the children are in bed. I am 2 weeks into 5:2ing, and my clothes already fit better. I am very optimistic! Thank you all for your stories and inspiration, they have really helped.

JB30 · 14/08/2013 20:38

What a day! I decided to go back to have an nfd instead of an FD - halfway through my mid morning chocolate barBlush Had a big sambo for lunch but not much else for the rest of the day. Ok nutritional value dubious but cals low enough to make up for pure piggery yesterday.
Tmi alert - no, ahem, movement for a couple of days, no massive surprise as back on the crack (white bread - the shame!) Feel a bit yucky Sad
Anywayyyy enough of the confession box, apologies for the me me me. Going to plan my food for tomorrow and have a great FD tomorrow.

Talkinpeace · 14/08/2013 21:06

JB30 Have lots and lots of fruit and veg (no juice, actual fruit) and drink plenty of water. You'll be fine.
Gus Wink it really IS that easy !
Helles that is a really good idea as personalised face to face support for making the changes should help.
Missstrawb Main course salads have fish and chicken and eggs in them .... think caesar salad type things - filling but healthy and around 650 calories

IDismyname · 14/08/2013 22:23

Helles Thank you. I will investigate further...

wildwater · 15/08/2013 02:27

Hi everybody. It has been raining solidly and I have spent most of the day in the kitchen, cooking.

I made: two loaves of wholemeal bread + some rolls, a big pot of vegetable soup (made with some finely diced jamon so it wasn't vegetarian), a large bowl of escalbada - roasted red peppers and aubergines mashed with olive oil & garlic - and a spinach & egg 'pie'.

Also put some chick peas in to soak, to cook tomorrow. This is food for over the next day or two. All good seasonal produce and all made from scratch.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 15/08/2013 02:57

Gus, glad to hear it! I still can't do zero cals until dinner, but I get through on two skim milk drinks during the day (11 and 4ish) and then 350 cals for dinner, and that suits me fine. Sounds like you're doing great.

TIP I'm appreciating the healthy NFD meal links as well. I said up thread that I use food for entertainment - one of the things I mean by that is that I like food that takes a long time to eat. I tend, when I'm eating dinner on my own, to construct a ploughmans', or a tapas plate, but it is often heavy on cured meats and cheese and things. I need healthier versions, so the deconstructed salad nicoise idea is a great one. Trouble is that I'm time poor, and finding the time to buy and prepare really fresh meals is a bit tricky (mostly the buying part, since I don't want to eat week-old lettuce but I don't work near a greengrocer!), but I'll have to try harder.

Sashimi/sushi platters with edamame would work too. Can I make it to a fishmonger by tonight...

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 15/08/2013 02:58

Wildwater that sounds heavenly. Do you have a recipe for the escalbada? Do you use it as a stir-in for the soup, or how does it work?

EagleRiderDirk · 15/08/2013 07:46

fast day.
starving
only 745
wth is happening with me?

Emilythornesbff · 15/08/2013 07:59

Morning!
Well done prawntoast
Good luck for today's fast JB30

I'm back for motivation. Convinced it's the wakeful nights with bf dd that are sapping my energy and focus.
One FD a week (close to zero cals)- piss easy. 2 is manageable.
NFDs and I'm like that Adam Richman off of "man v food". I've lost control aaarrrggghhhh!
So talk amongst yourselves about eating healthily and I'll listen in

tomorrowweeat · 15/08/2013 08:33

LOL, me too Emily Fast days are fine, it's the other days I struggle with. Didn't matter so much at first but now I've lost 2 stones and plateaued. Obviously need to reduce my food intake on NFDs but find that hard to decide what to eat.

JB30 · 15/08/2013 08:34

Erd hot drink time
Thanks Emily, stocked up on soup en route so set for success!
It's going to be a good day as work is mental busy, distraction is my saviour on fd's. Best of luck to all follower Thursday fasters!

postmanpatscat · 15/08/2013 08:52

good luck emily tomorrow and jb you are doing great! Recognising your challenges and dealing with them is the solution, and you're doing that.

About 30C here already, bliss!

Emilythornesbff · 15/08/2013 10:24

Yes tomorrowweeat I'm near my ideal weight and probably need to be ore strict to lose that last 7lb.
