Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

FD today. Twisted my ankle this morning dragging my bin around the village searching for the bin men because I over slept so I was force fed (aka offered) a chocolate truffle for the shock -oops! Hungry now.

vintage52er · 15/08/2013 11:05

tomorrow if you are finding fast days easy and NFDs hard, try 4:3 for a while. That's what I did and the weight shifted again. Also it means that you don't have to cut too many calories on NFD.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 15/08/2013 11:19

FD is cancelled to allow ds (12) to 'take care' of me. This means that I will be having a sausage roll and a finger of fudge for lunch. Yum!

catsrus · 15/08/2013 11:53

I would agree with upping the number of fast days if you are struggling with NFDs - apart from the calorie reduction it all helps in the appetite resetting that seems to go on with this WOE.

Hello to new people and [waves] to old friends. I was on the first thread (and many subsequent ) lost 32lb by Easter and have been in maintenance mode ever since. My BMI is around 19 and im a size 10-12. I literally eat what I want to eat these days, but weigh myself everyday so I don't fool myself into thinking I can eat anything and not put on weight. I throw in a few fast days whenever I can - particularly after an over indulgent weekend Grin. In the last couple of weeks I've had 4-5 meals out - inc. Indian, pub ploughmans, Greek 'platter' with pitta and dips, lots of Wine and a few loaves of artisan bread with real butter and local cheeses . In between I've had some fast and semi fast days with salad or veggie curry.

Don't want to speak too soon - but it does feel like I've now got the tools to keep my weight stable - I could generally lose ok but then it piled on again, slowly but surely. On this WOE there was no feeling of being on a diet and then coming off it - just learning to balance heavy eating days with fast days. Stick with it - it really does work!

Oh and there are 4 of us in my office who have had similar results :-)

RestlessSoul · 15/08/2013 12:19

Wow wow wow! I posted this
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/a1815818-Crap-Just-weighed-myself-12-STONE-Is-it-realistic-to-be-10-stone-by-Xmas

Two weeks ago, I wanted to give this diet a two week trial before I commented on it.

So on 30 July I weighed 12 stone or 168 lbs exactly, after two weeks on 5 2 diet with every other day barre exercises and 3x a week light jogging I now weigh.......drumroll please 160 lbs or 11 stone 6! Shock Grin

My clothes are fitting much much better and my waist is down 2 whole inches..omg and my hips are down 2 inches
This w.o.e is so incredible, On fast days I have tea/water/squash/salad and soup and on non-fast days my appetite is 70% of what it was, so although I'm not eating 'clean' I'm eating much less.

If anyone is on the fence about this diet, just give it two weeks! You will be amazed!

p.s I was always super sedentary, but now I joined this beginners evening running club which is so fantastic and much better (for me) than sitting at home/restaurants/shows etc.

Why haven't I started exercising before, it is mildly addictive! Only 20 lbs to go! I am v v confident I can make my goal of 140 lbs by December.

Bramblesinforrin · 15/08/2013 12:25

Omg fab so very well done! It comes off steadily now, don't worry if you plateau a bit, keep going, fab start!

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 15/08/2013 12:33

Argh! I've been doing this the same length of time and have lost nothing. I am going to be fat for ever, get diabetes, cut my foot, get gangrene and die in a pool of my own rotted flesh Angry Envy Sad

MissStrawberry · 15/08/2013 12:35

Camped out with kids. Had very little sleep as they were loud. Gave up at 3am and went in leaving DH with kids so knackered now. In pain still and just had to do a load of shopping so skint too.

Managed to buy cottage cheese and some salad dressing, oh and avocados but couldn't find sliced pimentos as not 100% sure what they are.

DH off so kids asked for fish and chips. DH gone to get them and I will have a tiny portion and then something very light for tea. Also bought miso soup. Still struggling with believing I have to eat 1807 calories a day but will keep trying.

MissStrawberry · 15/08/2013 12:39

Oh HellesBelles Sad. Hells Bells indeed. Keep going. Maybe when you do start losing it will be 10lbs off in one go. Don't lose heart. I have only lost 4lbs on just under 2 weeks of doing this (or is it one week Confused?) and I have realised I can't fast Mon-Wed next week as away but will keep trying.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 15/08/2013 12:45

It's very frustrating as I am eating less on nfd's than I did before and I'm doing at least two fasts a week, if not three. I have 4 stone to lose so, based on what everyone else is posting, it should have been dropping off me.

Tesco's sell dried pimento. The little berry ones. The only other time I've seen them is in olives.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 15/08/2013 12:47

They're a type of pepper btw. Sweet I think. And I jst remembered seeing smoked pimento at a food festival in newcastle so deli's are probably your best chance.

MissStrawberry · 15/08/2013 12:52

I thought they were peppers and I have definitely seen a red jar of sliced pimentos somewhere but Sainsbury's have moved a lot of stuff and I just couldn't find them.

southeastdweller · 15/08/2013 12:53

HellesBelles Are you eating to your T.D.E on NFD's?

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 15/08/2013 12:59

Between 90% and 100% of tdee. When I've gone over tdee, I've had an extra fd. I mustn't be logging properly.

RestlessSoul · 15/08/2013 13:06

HellesBelles I think it is mostly because I used to overeat a lot and not exercise at all. Literally no exercise bar walking to and from tube stations and and walking in and out of places. I have changed that now.
So my body is unused to even moderate physical exertion, I expect the weight loss will be 1-1.5 lbs per week after these two weeks.

Keep persevering HellesBelles you will get there!

Aww Thanks brambles Here's hoping!

changeforthebetter · 15/08/2013 13:08

Hello, doing my first fast. Not hungry but a bit woozy. Haven't been feeling hungry for a while but still managed to suff my face on holiday Blush

No idea what I weigh and hoping clothes will be a better indicator. Numbers tend to depress me more.

Just one wee question - I have been trawling the boards and articles but can't spot this one - can you move your fast days around the week if needed?

vikkisue · 15/08/2013 13:16

Hello, not had the opportunity to post for a couple o weeks, I seem to be bouncing around the same two to three pounds lost and gained lately. I'm finding fast days easy, even sometimes going a full 24 hours without eating (btw anyone notice any strange toilet habits the day after a fast? Perhaps this should be a whole other thread as it might be TMI). I'm not sure if I haven't lost any more weight due to body adapting, or eating too many carbs on NFDs (I'm still within TDEE though) also I'm thinking I need to start doing some exercise too. Being a bit of a procrastinator on that one at the minute. I'm nowhere near giving up this WOE but feeling a tad disappointed to have been bouncing with weight loss for past two weeks.

I know, I know .... I've already lost 7 pounds, and others have had very long plateaus and I've only really just started. I guess I just wanted to have my cake and eat it (just on a NFD - ha ha).

I've caught up on these threads now, - they are a great read and I'm just sorry I can't post as often.

X

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 15/08/2013 14:27

I'm feeling sorry for myself today - I slept badly, woke up with a sore back and twisted my ankle chasing after the bin men with my completely full bin that I'd forgotten to leave out. As a result, allowing a 12yo boy to take over lunchtime catering seemed like a food plan resulting in a full fd's calories being used up by his menu choice (ie what was sitting in the fridge and needed no prep).

Hence my wailing. Not having scales and being several miles from the nearest boots, I've been concentrating on my waist measurement which has been bouncing from 39.5 to 40 (inches - if it was cm I'd have a whole different set of problems).

Anyway, up and hobbling now so filling up on cups of green tea and planning a prawn noodle broth for tea.

Gilbertus · 15/08/2013 14:53

Whoops. Supposed to be a FD today but... Have lapsed. TOM plus horrible stressful week. The first day in a long time I am at home with all children with no deadlines. Lovely day with lots of pootly around things like library. Kids relaxed and watching a video so I am eating shortbread and reading a book. Also ate pasta lunch with them. So this week will have to be a 6:1 Smile

MelanieCheeks · 15/08/2013 15:35

changeforthebetter how's your first fast going?

Yes, you can swap days about any way you like. It's one of the big advantages of this WOE.

Going well here - the trick is to keep busy. I've had a fairly mind-numbing spreadsheet exercise to do, and it was lunchtime before I even realised it. DH is in charge of those wee veggie kievs tonight - but I also have an aubergine which needs using up. Any suggestions? Thinly sliced and grilled, maybe?

wildwater · 15/08/2013 15:41

Hola 5:2ers. Another rainy day in Patagonia, land of fairies & giants. I have been holed-up inside, cooking for the troups. Yesterday I made bread, vege soup, escalebada (roasted red peppers & aubergines peeled & sliced & mixed w garlic & olive oil) and a spinach & egg 'pie'. We are eating well.

I haven't been over-eating, but I think my weight has reached a plateau. Am still going a bit crazy not being able to weigh myself...must get over that. And I think I will start doing 4:3 for a while. That might shake things up and get me going again in the right direction. :)

IDismyname · 15/08/2013 16:30

Oh, Helles - sorry to hear that you're having a bad day. Look after the ankle (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) and you'll be more mobile tomorrow.

EagleRiderDirk · 15/08/2013 16:59

bit of a fast day fail today. was out and about and felt over wobbly and shaky so popped into subway for a salad. then had a chat with oh who pointed out that my insistence on fasting whilst hoping I don't lose weight (as my special dress is already getting too big for me and I have no chance to get a dressmaker and I don't fit in the size down) is slightly at odds. so I decided I'd do 16:8 today. had a cinnamon prezel and look like I may hit the lofty heights of 50% tdee. turned down all manner of goodies coz I wanted something I really wanted if I was going to waste calories.

may do another half calorie or mini fast day Monday before giving it a 2 fast break.

BetsyBell · 15/08/2013 17:06

Just checking in- fast day today and have been mad busy humping furniture around after some building works at home. Phase 1 is officially complete (and I get to sleep on a proper bed again! Yay! A sofa bed is not ideal for the best nights).

DH says this calls for a celebration, which I take to mean bubbles! So a semi-ish fast - 500 cals plus booze. I must have burnt off at least a billion calories today anyway Wink

Salad Nicoise tonight, can't imagine where I got that idea from Grin

changeforthebetter · 15/08/2013 17:14

Bit grumpy Blush

The kids wanted to make buns Shock. I have resisted licking any spoons or eating the produce.

I have eaten a leftover hard boiled egg which staved off the worst of the hunger.

I am planning steamed broccoli with the other left over egg (kids requested them for breakfast and then didn't eat them Confused I fancy some pesto on the broccoli but need to figure out the cals. Today, I've had two cups of tea with milk, a cup of marmite and hot water with a slice of lime, plus the egg. Adds up to 100?

Looking forward to bedtime. Have been sleeping badly, probably as a result of two weeks of booze every night on holiday - not masses, but every night which I don't normally do.
