Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I have a very successful FD yesterday until Totm arrived and the menstrual hunger beast roared! So yep destroyed FD - was at 1200 come bedtime. But hey ho that's still well under tdee and today's a mini fast of up to 1200, I'll claw it back over the weekend.
I'm down .6 this week, happy with that. 2 weeks after hols, where initial gain looked to be 8 pounds! So all going well.
Happy Friday y'all

PaisleyPashmina · 09/08/2013 12:12

I posted on the last thread but have lurked since as it moves so fast. I'm on roughly week 6 and I have a couple of questions...

On NFD, does it matter if I eat under my TDEE? I have quite a lot of weight to lose and wondered if eating slightly less (200-300cals) each day will help...or does it go against the whole point of fasting?

Also, I started 30DS on Monday and weighed today and I have put on a pound(!) Do you think this be due to starting exercise or that AF is due in a couple of days?

Hopefully one of you lovely ladies can help me figure it out.

NameoftheRose · 09/08/2013 12:30

Today I checked my blood pressure.

I have lost over two stone, primarily through healthy eating and exercise (a lot of exercise) and am now 5:2 ing to shift that last ten pounds. Which is going nicely thanks, after a month of 5:2.

Anyway, back to blood pressure. When I was at my heaviest I was in the mild hypertensive range for my systolic reading, 141/90. This was particularly alarming as I usually have low blood pressure - not problematically low. Today it read 117/80 which is in the optimal range. I'm so pleased about this, my hard work means I look ten years younger, feel fitter and my health has improved considerably.

Certainly gives me the impetus to keep up the fasting and shift that last bit of fat. Grin

Hello everyone.

BsssBshhh. Wow what an amazing weightloss!! I'm really impressed. You say it's been slow but that doesn't look slow to me. That's a huge amount in a short time.

My BMI is currently 24.2. Pre DC it was 20 to 21. About 3 months after DC 2, it was 28.5. That was 1 year and 9 months ago so its taken me an awful lot longer to lose much less weight. Blush

Been doing great with 16/8. Still not sure I am brave enough for a full on 500cal fast day. I have managed two days of 1000cals this week without problem but less than that is too scary just now.

I may attempt 900 cals next week.

I bet you all think I am a total whimp!! Grin

Tonight I am planning to have wine!! And I started eating later today to accommodate later dinner with DH. Sadly I just realised that I have not left it late enough.

I ate at 12 so should stop at 8 tonight. That is when we will have eaten dinner but I was planning to have wine afterwards! Not convinced I can eat late afternoon tomorrow so may have ballsed today/tomorrow up slightly. Hmmm. I suspect I will end up gaining weight over weekend.

Bit baffled on TDEE. mFP says its 1400 for me. But other places are quoting 2100 to 2000? Confused. Anyone else found this?

postmanpatscat · 09/08/2013 13:01

tryinghard I have been doing 1 a week with holiday looming, but for the month before that I only fasted once in 4 weeks, I think! I have lost 26lbs and it's hard to say that with less than a stone to lose it got harder, since I have lost 8lbs more than I planned so haven't been trying very hard.

MissStrawberry · 09/08/2013 13:02

Lots of well dones to give out!!

I am annoyed with myself. Sure I have only done 1 fast day so decided I would today having soup for lunch and dinner. Now making fish pie for DH and DCs and I make the most amazing fish pie. Maybe box up my portion for tomorrow.

postmanpatscat · 09/08/2013 13:03

MrsF use the TDEE calculator in the opening post.

postmanpatscat · 09/08/2013 13:04

Miss S that is the 5:2 motto - if I want it, I'll eat it tomorrow!

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 09/08/2013 13:08

Wow NameoftheRose and Bssh!
That's fab!

MissStrawberry · 09/08/2013 13:09

I have decided I need to write down what I should be doing each day as I am finding it impossible to remember. Any suggestions for how many fast days and which are best?

I need to lose 2 stone. By October Hmm.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 09/08/2013 13:13

Before and after pics now on profile for short time :)

EagleRiderDirk · 09/08/2013 13:16

mrsF have you got MFP set to weight loss? If so set it at 0lb per week. That will give you a better figure to aim for. You don't need to calorie restrict on your 5 days as you will get a calorie deficit from your 2 days of 500 cals.

EagleRiderDirk · 09/08/2013 13:17

Well done name

trucks I can't click in order to have a nosey!

alwaysanauntie · 09/08/2013 13:35

paisley might be best trying just 100 cal under tdee and see how things go first? Or if you're feeling up for the challenge try a zero fast instead, but I'd be wary about eating too much under tdee. Both exercise and totm can cause water retention so could cause a gain, most people tend to bounce up and down by a few lbs, so i really wouldn't worry about an amount that small :)

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 09/08/2013 13:41

Not sure if photo thing works and now toddler has nabbed iPad so can't check on phone...

Breadandwine · 09/08/2013 13:49

MrsF nice to see you over here!

It's all about being comfortable with what you're doing - and dipping a toe in the waters is strongly to be recommended, IMO.

Once you know that 900 cals is OK, then you can reduce it - but at your pace. It's what works for you at the end of the day.

MrsFlorrick · 09/08/2013 14:31

Eagle and postmanspatcat. I have used the one from here and it says TDEE is 2094. That's that one cleared up.

Breadandwine. (Something I am planning to have later haha). Thanks Grin. I am newish to dieting as I never needed to pre DC and have sort of failed at everything else I have tried.

I think I will move ahead very slowly and not rush towards 500 cal fasts. I think that I would fail if I tried right now and end up feeling bad and scoff biscuits.

The 16:8 is really working though. I am 9 almost 10 days in and I have lost weight and 1" off my fat waist. The weightloss stands at 3kg (6.6lbs) this morning but I am about to ruin it with wine later. (And cheese and bread Grin).

It will be interesting to see what happens to the weight over the weekend. I will still do 16:8 but not just eat virtuous healthy food. (Cheese and bread possibly choc).

Hopefully I won't be back to square one.

berri · 09/08/2013 14:34

End of week 4 and feeling very positive. Only 4lbs to go before I reach target, can't believe how well this has worked out for me!

One question though - does anyone get a sore lower back on FDs?

Is this my kidneys??! I always make sure I have plenty of water & green tea on a FD, but tend not to have anything to eat until 7pm or so. Any ideas?

monster54 · 09/08/2013 15:17

It is your kidneys berri they are working hard to remove toxins.

Are you drinking at least 2 litres every day? Not just FD's?

PaisleyPashmina · 09/08/2013 15:54

auntie thanks for that. Hopefully now I'm adding exercise too it will come off a bit quicker. Ideally I want to have lost 5 dress sizes by next August. Think I may attempt a zero fast next week and see how I get on.

MissStrawberry · 09/08/2013 15:54

I feel like I am not doing a 500 calorie day or an eat normally/as I want either Confused.

Soup was about 300 calories as per google as couldn't find exact recipe. So if I have same again for dinner but a bit less it will be a fast day.

Did I see something about a day where you can eat the whole kitchen contents?? Grin.

Talkinpeace · 09/08/2013 16:05

Missstraberry
Give yourself some slack. Your kids were little ratbags at you earlier in the week and this is all new ....
have a peaceful read through the tips and hints thread.
There are several posts (not all by me) about how timings of fast days work
Including paisley about being a bit under TDEE some days

BUT
You (all) have to find what works for you as only then will it work long term.
And there ARE NO quick results.
There IS NO target weight
There IS NO ideal weight
And how you are eating now is the new NORMAL
because how you ate before made you overweight / ill / both

mayaswell · 09/08/2013 16:17

missS veg soup is usually a low calorie option, do you want to put your recipe on here and we can tell you how much it is?
It's hard to do it as you go when you start, maybe make a plan for next week maybe, say Tuesday and Thursday as FD's and plan exactly what you're going to eat on those days.

You can do it.

MissStrawberry · 09/08/2013 16:46

How I ate before was a mess. I hated myself for eating when I wasn't hungry. I hated myself for caring I was fat. I hated myself for controlled by food.

I have just found a bag of salad in the fridge use by today and I am happy to have that (no fish pie) with some balsamic vinegar. If I did that can I say today is a FD so that tomorrow I can have fish pie?

I am very black and white and struggling to get my head straight as I am trying to change so much at once.

In my head- 2 days of 500 cals and the rest try and eat less and better than before?

Recipe

Roasted leek and yellow pepper soup.
Serves 4.

Won't post method to save time but google it and it comes up as from Lakeland catalogue.

4 or 5 yellow peppers
2 leeks
2 cloves of garlic
4 tbsp. olive oil
1 medium onion
2 stalks of celery
1 medium carrot (I used 2)
1 medium potato
1.2 litres of stock
thyme
bay leaf

Need to feed kids, back later.

MissStrawberry · 09/08/2013 16:49

Where is the tips and hint thread please?

Mind gone blank.
