Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thanks Trucks and MrsFlorrick. MrsF I meant weight slow recently when I have less to lose (wish I could channel Postman's weightloss!). Although I did have a long four month stall at midway point last year.

Trucks I can't see your photos. Can you direct link?

Lizzabadger · 09/08/2013 18:13

Bmi=22 today. Second mini-goal achieved! Next is 10st7lb interim target, which I should reach in 2 weeks.

Talkinpeace · 09/08/2013 18:18

Lizza
well done on hitting another of those mini goals .... they add up to a great achievement

MissStrawberry · 09/08/2013 18:59

Just had dinner - huge bowl of salad leaves with 2tbsp of balsamic vinegar. Full up!

Done my homework and read all the posts specified but not yet the ones in between. I am so tired I can only take in so much though I have made lots of notes and hope I will eventually get the hang of it. I am sure you do too with all my daft questions!

Really pleased to have done my second fast day though I can't remember when my first one was. 432 calories eaten today.

Weigh in tomorrow 1 week in. Eek.

MissStrawberry · 09/08/2013 19:06

I have just done my calculations as gone wrong some where.

TDEE - 1807
BMI - 27.5
BMR - 1506 (don't know what that is.)

JB30 · 09/08/2013 19:24

Bmr - base metabolic rate, what your body needs at rest, doing nothing, just keeping your organs going.
Couldn't possibly imagine you're at 432 even you ate all the soup, will mfp it to check. Brb

Talkinpeace · 09/08/2013 19:29

Miss Strawb
I'm 48, I'm 5'5" and I weigh 56kg
I work my TDEE out on light exercise cos I'm mean on myself (and light framed)
Its just over 1500

now put your stats in .... (ignore BMR)

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 09/08/2013 19:33

Miss strawberry you should be eating around 1800 5 days a week and 500 2 days. It's as simple as it sounds!

MissStrawberry · 09/08/2013 19:36

I'm 41
5 foot 6
12 stone 2lbs
Have 3 kids at home so not exercising properly at the moment.

JB30 · 09/08/2013 19:36

MissS it worked out about 1000 for 4, the guts of that was 480 for the olive oil. I guessed 200gr for medium potato, which is about 160 cals, peppers prob 200 for 4. Leeks about 100, carrots, onion and stock the remaining 100 or so. My Maths mightnt add up 100% but you get the drift.
Lot of cals for the oil but I suppose it would help satiety.
You are very hard on yourself, you're only starting out, be nice to yourself Flowers

MissStrawberry · 09/08/2013 19:40

The salad was around 90 and the balsamic was 32. I had the soup as 300 for MFP.

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 09/08/2013 19:45

Salad leaves at 90 cals? Sounds a lot. Were there carrots or something in it?

MissStrawberry · 09/08/2013 19:51

Carrot and purple cabbage too. DH plated it up for me so was guessing what it was called.

HellesBellesIsRenamed · 09/08/2013 20:08

Is anyone on here a manual-worker because, after spending today decorating while fasting, I can't imagine how it could be done!! Absolutely famished even though I went up to 700 cals.

mttum · 09/08/2013 22:10

Hi everyone. I feel a bit embarrassed, having not posted for ages, but things have been really hectic culminating in my niece's wedding last Friday, and we are going on hols for a fortnight tomorrow. Just packed my case, and it dawned on me that it weighs almost exactly the amount I have lost over the last couple of years since I was at my heaviest. That's 20kg, and when I picked the case up I could hardly believe that I used to carry that weight around with me all the time. Not all the loss is down to 5:2 but probably at least half is.

So thanks to all of you for all the advice and support, even when I've only been "lurking", and to those of you starting out, you are def on the right track, it may not be fast (no pun intended) but it works, and it WILL change your life if you persevere. I had a 4 week stall in weight loss in June, but since the start of July have lost a further 9lb and 1.5 inches from the waist. And even if I put some on over the hols I know how to shift it when I get back!

wrigglebum · 09/08/2013 22:22

Brilliant motivational post mttum, thank you.

Watching The Men Who Made Us Fat on catch up, fascinating!

Southeastdweller · 09/08/2013 22:49

mttum 9lbs lost in five weeks is a wonderful achievement. Have a lovely holiday.

I've been maintaining nicely for a few weeks on 6:1 but the carb monster came a-calling on Wednesday, yesterday and today and I succumbed Blush. Though I'm generally making sensible food choices on a subconscious level there's another part of me that's prone to self-sabotage which I need to work on, the part that thinks sometimes "because I'm not overweight anymore I can overindulge more than once in a blue moon" Hmm. Back on track tomorrow with a mini-fast and a FD on Tuesday.

Enjoy your weekends Smile.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 09/08/2013 22:51

Popping on here as a lurker. Want to give hope to newbies.

I was a bit sceptical at first. I have a lot of weight to lose (6stone plus) and I'm viewing this as a long term thing as I need to re-learn eating too.

I'm taking it slowly and not been evangelical about it. I have been very strict on fast days but NFD I've been v relaxed. Starting slowly to make better food choices (as I said, long term thing for me) but still being a bit naughty on NFD. Finding this is working for me, probably could have lost much more but this works for me, so I'm sticking with it. (Wine and ice cream tonight :) ) Starting to slowly excercise too.

So, 6 stone overweight (maybe more). No scales. Doing this WOL since 4 April. 2 weeks off in June for hols. Saw the nurse yesterday and popped on scales. I thought I might have lost 7lbs. Oh No. In 4 months (incl 2 weeks off on hols), I've only lost a bloody stone!!

Yes slimming world might be faster, but this WOL I can do! This is forever. Those who are scptical, it works!!!
I've been so naughty on NFDs and still lost weight! I'm getting better at eating habits, so hopeful things can only get better but even if they progress as they are now, that's 3 stone in a year. Happy days.

Breadandwine · 09/08/2013 23:13

This thread is brilliant!

There are long-term maintainers posting; well-established posters who have settled into this WOL and are steadily losing weight; and there are a steady flow of newcomers who are just finding their feet.

And gradually the newcomers become well-established, and the well-established join the ever-growing group of maintainers themselves. And everyone supports everyone else! I love it!

No, I'm not drunk - I've had nothing since dinner. Might just have a glass of something, now I think about it, and I'll raise a toast to all on here - and the good Dr M! Flowers

MelanieCheeks · 09/08/2013 23:37

Cheers breadandwine! Well said!

BsshBossh · 09/08/2013 23:44

Chin chin Breadandwine Wine Grin.

vintage52er · 09/08/2013 23:48

MissS I weighed the same as you when I started (12st 2lbs) 5'5" but 58 years.
I'm now 10st and a size 10 and I still have trouble believing it. This past year has flown by and I'm so happy with my weigh, size and health now. Just listen to all the excellent advice and take it slowly and you too will get there. This time next year you will be a different person Smile

vintage52er · 09/08/2013 23:50

B&W you are brilliant Grin Wine
