Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

2nd ever fast day today and can already feel my eating habits changing dramatically. The amount of snacks especially chocolate I used to eat is scary. One thing though, does it matter if I've been having 500 calories over 3 meals of breakfast, lunch and dinner or is it the length of time of not eating anything that's the important factor ? Still a bit new to this but finding MFP a great help .

ELR · 08/08/2013 23:08

Marking place and off to catch up on the thread, all 13 pages!!

Breadandwine · 08/08/2013 23:09

Hi Purpleshoes Most of us began with three small meals on a fasting day, but gradually (or all at once in my case) gravitated to the one meal in the evening. This has the advantage of not stimulating the appetite, and also giving up to 24 hours between meals, which is reckoned to be very beneficial in lots of ways.

Check out the Tips and Links thread for all the theory behind IF.

Can I have some help please?I have done two weeks of fasting (so four days of 500 calories) and I stepped on the scales this morning and I have not lost a gram of weight!Angry when will I see results? I usually fast completely until lunch time and have 200 cals, then 300 for dinner.

I am feeling very discouraged, especially as my DH got on the scales this morning and has lost 5 kgs! He's only done three days of fasting in the two weeks. It just doesn't seem fair Hmm

SHould I keep trying or am I one of the unlucky fatties for whom the fast diet won't work?

thinkcan · 09/08/2013 05:09

funnyfishface I am just wondering how you are doing with your weight loss? Like you, I am 5'1" and was 130 lbs when I started on this WOE at the end of Jan. I reached 120 lbs at the end of June - not a great loss in 5 months but consideriing that I am 57 and have not been under 125 lbs in 20 years despite trying all kinds of diets, I am happy with my progress. I have been on holidays over the last two weeks and have no clue what my weight is now. But my two sizes down clothes are still fitting loosely, so can't have put on too much weight. You haven't posted since your initial posting, so I am wondering how you are doing. Hope to read a post from you soon.

EagleRiderDirk · 09/08/2013 06:47

hopeful apologies if you've mentioned this before but are you counting on NFD? For some people it takes a while before this woe shows a weight loss whereas for others its almost instant, and sadly you could be an unlucky one. But it could also be that you are overeating on your NFD and therefore not creating a large enough calorie deficit. As is often mentioned here though, don't lose heart. 2 weeks with no loss is also 2 weeks with no gain

MelanieCheeks · 09/08/2013 07:15

2 weeks is too short to see any results - give it at least a month.

Gilbertus · 09/08/2013 07:16

It took me 4 weeks. End of 5th week today and I've lost half a stone Smile

BsshBossh · 09/08/2013 07:22

Weigh in this morning and 0.4 lbs lost. So slow but I've been on this weightloss journey for so long now that I know this is okay.

For newbies, my stats:
Feb 2012 - BMI 36, 210lbs
August 2013 - BMI 23, 140lbs

Gilbertus · 09/08/2013 08:22

Meant to say I promised myself I'd do it for four weeks and glad I did as after 3 weeks weight loss was minimal. Doing it for weight loss only BUT for some reason over the last couple of weeks FOUR people have told me how rested and well I look, which is weird because I have never been so stressedSmile

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 09/08/2013 08:26

Hi folks
Checking in, first fast day in a while. Feels like a luxury to be drinking tea after ramadan fasting! I made some lovely cous cous and vegetables yesterday so I can have leftovers for dinner with some salad.

hopefulgum · 09/08/2013 09:05

Thanks so much for you replies,it is very encouraging. I try to eat well on nfd's but i think maybe it is too many calories. I really dont want to be counting on nfd's. That will feel too much like a diet. But I think I should for a couple of days just to see how many i am eating. I have also been exercising a bit. I will stick to it for at least a month.

alwaysanauntie · 09/08/2013 09:06

gilbertus am nearly Shock at your most recent post after the earlier doom and gloom Wink, glad we've converted you!

i also agree, 2 weeks is not long enough to see real results, i think MM gave it 12 weeks, so 1 month is really the minimum to give it.

FD here, baby wash coughing all night but am going to try and push through with hope of getting sub 65kg. Did circuits for the first time in 2 weeks & i ache...

postmanpatscat · 09/08/2013 09:14

morning all, I have lost 2lbs overnight, what's all that about?! I didn't fast yesterday Confused

MissStrawberry · 09/08/2013 09:20

Hello all

I plan to fast today but wondered if having my home made soup for lunch and dinner counts?

Resisted the urge to weigh myself this morning. Plan to weigh tomorrow as that will be a week since I started.

Just done lots of tidying, hovering and cleaning of windows so that must be a few calories burnt.

Raining loads so cancelled park plans. Was about to nip to shop to get batteries for DS2's toy but since he was just stroppy with me we are now not going Hmm.

Might bake later with DD since she is keen to learn and has been very helpful and good this morning.

MissStrawberry · 09/08/2013 09:25

I was hoovering!!

My computer corrects it to hovering Grin.

AngieM2 · 09/08/2013 09:53

FD yesterdays following night shift. Weigh in this morning, 2lb gone so that 10lb since my first fast on 3 July. Happy days!

Funnyfishface · 09/08/2013 09:56

Thinkcan thank you for asking.

Actually I am still struggling. 2 fast days so far this week and done the shred DVD. Weight back to 9.4 this morning.

To make things worse have cystitis today :-(

I am convinced that the medication I am on is contributing to my weight. I know I don't have much to lose but 10lbs on shorties does look a lot.

Will persevere anyway. Well done on your weight loss. You must feel fabulous

JessieMcJessie · 09/08/2013 09:58

Eurgh, am trying to start this today and the hunger is playing havoc with my concentration at work, just fantasising already about eating tomorrow and feel a bit shaky. Not sure it will work for me. ( I am in Asia, so it's now 5pm). Porridge for breakfast and black coffee for lunch, am sucking sugar free mints like crazy.

mehefin · 09/08/2013 10:01

Well done Angie Grin

mayaswell · 09/08/2013 10:08

jessie

Try having your breakfast later maybe?

It's tomorrow very soon, just keep going!

postmanpatscat · 09/08/2013 11:08

jessie it gets easier, you can do this!

tryinghard2 · 09/08/2013 11:34

I have been losing again but its very slow now! I think i have less than a stone to losr now - its going to be hardest now isnt it?

Ppc are you still doing 2 fasts or have you gone down to 1? Just being nosy :)

JessieMcJessie · 09/08/2013 11:35

Thanks guys, am having a jasmine tea, which is helping, and am hoing to go and walk the treadmill later- exercise usually curbs hunger panha so fingers crossed. And will hopefully tire me out so I fall asleep early and make breakfast time come around sooner!

yecartmannew · 09/08/2013 11:55

Jessie it really does get easier, promise.

I found my first 2 fasts really hard.

Try a later breakfast, and try something protein and/or veg based rather than porridge. A lot of us have found carby things make us hungrier and give us a drop in blood sugar later that could cause shakiness.

Also some people find things like gum or mints help, others find they make things worse because saliva production is linked to digestion so might make your stomach think food is coming and may make you feel hungrier.

Good Luck and stick with it!
