The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

I am guessing more than 500 as I am not MFP it as if it is home made I don't know the calorie count.

its not "unnervingly easy" to be eating what your body needs, rather than what it wants to store
its healthily so
and once you start running out of fat in places it should not be the system says - proper supper tonight please - but proper is smaller than it was
that and making a point of lovely meals at least twice a week keeps an eye on your health

Stonking headache which is making FD very tough. Went for a long walk during an earlier wobble around lunchtime which was great and really cleared my head, but work is over, DD at playdate, am cooking tonight's FD dinner (veg curry) and headache has returned. How many calories in paracetemol? JOKING

my BMI is now under 21, but I'm still decidedly podgy in places.

As I have little or no visceral fat (I can pull my tummy right, right in on a fast day) I know that if my system says "oi, woman, eat" it means it, so I do - hence why I'll not stick to 500 calories tonight, but will have high protein, high veg to fill up efficiently.
If you have had issues with excess fasting, you need to be really clear with yourself that on a fast day its OK to eat till you start to feel full
as you are also setting good habits for your kids to follow

and if in doubt there will always be somebody here to give you a cyber hug

and lasagne is wonderful : just have it with salad and not too much garlic bread and wine Wink

I wasn't planning on having garlic bread or wine so I am claiming a gold star Grin.

I can breathe in pulling in my tummy quite a bit but I also know I have spare fat there. I will never have a flat tummy as my stomach muscles separated really badly when I had my baby and I have had problems since in that it is wonky and I have a suspected hernia.

Losing weight is going to be a bonus but tbh if I actually can learn to only eat when hungry and not hate myself for eating at times I will be happy.

@postmanpatscat Thank you so much for that. I've checked mine too and already it comes in at 1485, so I'm actually eating nearly the right amount on the non fast days. I'll stick to 500 on the fast days and see how it goes.

Surprisingly, today has felt almost effortless and I've barely noticed I'm going without, which is a vast improvement on my first fast earlier in the week.

I looked in the mirror this morning and I thought "you've done it" - I was really pleased with what I saw and content with how I look now (have gone from 10st 1 to 8st 4-5ish).

Then I tried on some swimwear and changed my mind Sad Really need to tone up my tummy and bum and the running and cross trainer are not doing the trick.

NEVER wear swimwear in front of a mirror.
I swim every day and make a point of never looking in the mirror as I walk past because its too self destructive.
Stick to how you look in well fitted clothes and you'll be happier in your skin.

postman could you try exercises that strengthen your core and muscles eg pilates, yoga and weights as a complement to your cardio. I always think the women at my gym who do these (especially weights) are much firmer than those who "just" run and do cardio machines.

Squats, lunges, hill walking and stepper machine (whilst bending forwards) have really lifted my bottom (which was sagging from running).

MissStraw are you on an FD or nfd today? Just a bit confused about you saying you were over 500 on nfd's - only just over or close to tdee, at least 1600 maybe?
I could be getting the wrong end of the stick, apologies if I am but it nearly sounding like you were going very low cal wise all days, not just fd's.
I'm on FD so brain not great - sorry again if I'm reading it wrong

What I am doing is missing breakfast as that suits me and then on normal days having lunch and dinner but much healthier things and less of anything less so. Proper fast days I have only done one I think. I have definitely tried to cut down on normal days but I am not calorie counting as I cook from scratch and find it hard to know how many are in. Probably doing it all wrong.

Today I have had leek and yellow pepper soup, small meringue, lasagne and water to drink.

No no - not saying you're doing it wrong at all. I do 16:8's a lot - ditching breakfast. I guess the point is not to be too worried on nfd's, you can eat reasonably. I wouldn't imagine what's you've mentioned today is more than 1000 cals, I know it can be hard to judge on home cooked foods - I did spend some time and build some recipes in mfp. So lasagne for example, 1lb mince, 200grams pasta sheets, sauces etc etc - 6 servings, total all ingredients and divide. Probably wayy to controlling on my part but I've been overweight or obese ALL my adult life and most of my childhood so I need to get real about what's been going in.
Just wanted to check in with you, you've sounded like you've had a lot on your plate - and not food Wink

Have been meaning to pop on here for ideas and support but been insanely busy.

This is my and DP's 10th month on 5:2. I started at 10-4 and now fluctuate between 9-10 and 9-12. Actually I'm nudging 10 ATM after camping weekend (calories don't count outside do they?). So not massive loss but I'm in this for the long haul and hoping to not get cancer, dementia, heart disease etc.

After initial doubt I love MFP - I upgraded to an iPhone 4 and it is brilliant at bar codes which takes out so much drudgery.

Another FD nearly over. Must TRY not to eat like maniac tomorrow.

Just broken my fast with a small peach. It tasted heavenly! Now waiting for DH to return home so I can eat a bowl of mixed vegetable curry (sweet potatoes, green beans, courgettes, fresh coriander, red kidney beans). I don't fancy rice so will eat the curry as soup!

I struggled today, with the headache and feeling dizzy. In my many months doing 5:2, this experience was a first. Been researching and I think I need to add a bit more salt to my FDs - eg a pinch of salt in a mug of hot water every few hours. Will try that on aminday.

Now 3 NFDs - hurrah!

missS you're going to find 5:2 really tough if you don't count calories and you go low cal on non-fast days. You'll just go into starvation mode, which is not want you want. I think you need My Fitness Pal to log what you're eating for a while, it can help you understand your calories, even in homemade food.

I have checked in on MFP and I have inputted more than I thought I had Confused. Clearly having less sleep is affecting my memory. I am under every day with my normal day calories so I need to sort myself out. I think I need to do fasting on the same days each week so I know where I am. I can't remember when my proper fasting day was and I am someone who functions better when I know what I am doing and have a routine.

Well I think I did ok having fish and chips on my fast day. Not quite sure how to count it, but looks like I managed about 400 calories. I had a small haddock, pushed off all the batter and just ate the fish with a squeeze of lemon. Then a pickled egg and a small handful of chips (no more than 10 I guess). It was yummy. Plus, since I've done a shred and walked at least 4 miles today I won't worry too much if I creep up to 600 Smile.

Wow! I only had a couple of days without posting and you've added ten pages! You have all been so focussed.

Ear infection finally gone but I haven't fasted yet. Not sure why. I stayed sub-tdee. I will fast tomorrow and get back on track.
