Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Wow - some great success stories on here while I've been away: well done Trucks!

A week back from holiday and I am amazed at how quickly the 6lbs (of Brie) I put on have melted off. So I'm back to where I was before we went and am delighted to be able to start 'properly' again. As ever my good eating habits didn't extend to my holiday (I so wish they were instinctive but plainly my instincts remain very firmly to eat cheese and drink wine at all opportunities). Still, at least it is good that I feel so relieved to be back on the straight and narrow on my return.

So, 29 lbs down since Christmas, and hopefully 17 more to go. Happy fasting, everyone!

EagleRiderDirk · 08/08/2013 08:22

ha wriggle try posting then see some of the vitriol that will come your way - it can be quite amazing in some places. I haven't mentioned it to many people personally but I've had all the it'll make you anorexic/I couldn't possibly survive one one meal a day even if just for 2 days/blah blah blah
the last one was my aunt who had been complaining that she was overweight and just couldn't cope with constant calorie restriction but could never do 5:2. I just turned around and said well I'm 3 stone down, have just stuffed myself with a roast and trimmings and pudding with no guilt about it at all but you either need to pee on the pot of get off love. Grin

BsshBossh · 08/08/2013 08:25

NotAsTired have a fab holiday! Where are you going?

FD for me today and for the first time ever I'm going to try just hot and cold water instead of teas, coffees for beverages. Breadandwine isn't that what you do? Then a 500 cal dinner.

I think I might have to resume logging calories on my NFDs again, just for a bit, as I think the cals are creeping up.

MissStrawberry · 08/08/2013 08:43

Morning all Smile.

Thanks alwaysanauntie. I do tend to over analyse things Blush.

Thank you Talkinpeace. I am stopping right here! Grin.

Was good and didn't weigh myself this morning.

I don't eat cereal that often unless it is rice crispies but I knew if I ate the rest of the aero bar I would still be hungry so went for what I thought was the healthy option Confused.

Not eaten yet. Will be making roasted leek and yellow pepper soup in a bit for lunch and possibly dinner though I have bought salad leaves, just not anything to go with them!

As I have pretty much given up on having breakfast is it possible you could end up getting it wrong and not eating enough and therefore not losing any weight? TBH I feel I aren't doing it right as it seems too easy. I have got used to not eating as much or as often and I haven't melted Grin. Helps that my head is in the right place to do this and you are all awesome with your support.

I was just wondering if it would be helpful or demoralising to work out what I should weigh.

mayaswell · 08/08/2013 08:52

I think one of the most liberating things, as eagle said, is the removal of the guilt on nfd's. I'm less 'hungry', which is a feeling I still don't really recognise after so many years of eating for entertainment.

Even though I deny it whenever I eat something 'bad' my little inner voice is whispering to me. I'm doing a lot less secret eating, sneaking the left over roast potatoes, the sneaky pork pies etc. It seems to be diminishing.

I've just opened an MFP account which I feel is the next step. Fast day today.

Ellaroo · 08/08/2013 09:32

I'm on my second fast today, so relatively new to 5:2. I was wondering if anyone knows the answer to a question I have. I want to lose just over half a stone. On an average day I usually eat around 1400 calories, rather than the guideline 2000. Does this mean I'd need to reduce my fasting days to a quarter of that figure (giving me 350 calories) to see results? I'm not enthusiastic about doing that, so I'm hoping it doesn't, but equally, I don't want to fast without any results. Thanks for any advice you're able to give.

wrigglebum · 08/08/2013 09:58

Ellaroo, I think you'd still want 500 calories. You will probably want to up your calories on NFDs too. I suggest calculating your TDEE and eating around that. Throw in some extra exercise to lose a bit more.

Well, I've just arranged to meet a friend and gave fish and chips for tea! I'm thinking with 500 calories, maybe eat the fish without the batter and a very small handful of chips? Maybe a pickled egg instead of some of the chips.

I definitely can't handle constant calorie restriction. I think it makes people cheat, or just give up if they over indulge. If you ruin a fast you can just do another one another day. Miss a week for a holiday and just throw in an extra fast another time. It's so much more flexible. Plus money saving- I must have saved loads cutting out the snacks, and carrying around a bottle of water rather than buying a coke. Plus the reduced food eaten on fast days, and less alcohol.

postmanpatscat · 08/08/2013 09:59

ellaroo my TDEE was about 1600 as I neared target but I still ate up to 500 on fast days. It is slightly plucked out of the air but it's difficult to eat less than that. If you're exercising it gives you a bit more scope on NFDs.

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 08/08/2013 10:11

Hi folks
I'm getting back on the 5:2 wagon tomorrow. I've gained around 3lbs since march when I stopped fasting so could be worse. I've been fasting for ramadan but lost no weight due to the puddings every day! It has reminded me how easy fasting is. I will be checking in tomorrow to encourage myself!

NotAsTired · 08/08/2013 10:23

BsshBossh. I am going to a Greek island with my DS, parents, brother and niece. I am so looking forward to it.

I started on this journey when I did because of the holiday. My mum bought a swimsuit for me and I said oh get it in a ten. She was like, are you sure? (Thanks, mum Hmm.) Anyway, when it came, could I get into it? No, I could not. Blush. I tried to exchange it but size 12 was out of stock online and in the local shop. Grrr. I was too embarrassed to tell my mum and admit she was right so I started 5:2. Well, I tried it on this morning, and it fits very nicely, thank you, mum. Grin

postmanpatscat · 08/08/2013 10:27

Welcome back ehric!

Velma8877 · 08/08/2013 10:45

Time to delurk! After realising I've been doing 5:2 for 6 months this week. It's become a WOL. Unlike the dreaded calorie restriction diets where I am constantly thinking of 'when I can go back to normal'. 5:2 is the new normal.

I've lost 7 pounds, still about 1 stone to go but am maintaining (that sounds better than the dreaded plateau!). And I know exactly why I'm stuck. Too many meals out and too many packets of crisps...my downfall. And I'm at one of my set-points, where my body seems to happily sit and it takes a bit of being very careful about staying slightly under my tdee to get past the sticking point. So, after the last family birthday celebration next week I'll have to go back to MFPing my NFDs for a few weeks till I drop at least 2 pounds.

So expect to see a bit more of me here, trying to be accountable! Now I've written it down, I'll have to follow through.

BsshBossh · 08/08/2013 10:56

Woohoo on the size 10 swimsuit NotAsTired!

alwaysanauntie · 08/08/2013 11:00

notastired hurrah for getting into the swimsuit! All ok here, was just a cyst but they stuck needles in my boob which i totally wasn't expecting Confused follow up in a couple of months to make sure all still ok, so a big relief :) enjoy your hols xx

NurseEzzzaChapel · 08/08/2013 11:19

Pff! Can't keep up! Amazing to think we're on thread 25 only one year on though! My fasting anniversary is still about 4 weeks away but it's strange to think I've managed to keep up my enthusiasm for that long!

So last night, non-fast day, I decided there was an emergency need for cake situation as the neighbour came round bleeding profusely from a scratch on her leg (she's fine now). After waiting an hour for the ambulance I was no longer tired and a bit on edge and decided I needed cake. So I had a go at the cake in a mug, which I'm sure would have been lovely had I realised that the oil in the pantry was used fried egg oil. Confused Well at least I know it works in my microwave and the texture is lovely, I just need to avoid making fry-up flavoured cake next time. Blush

Dotty342kids · 08/08/2013 11:30

notastired Ooh, I bet that felt great! Enjoy your hols.
alwaysanauntie glad to hear nothing more than a cyst though needles in boob does not sound nice!

I'm still eating too much on NFDs - chocs, cake etc. For the first time in six months (has it really been that long!) of 5:2ing I went to a bakery and bought a cake yesterday. I just really, really wanted one Smile
Thank heavens for fasting day today. Am beginnign to reconcile myself to the fact that if I want to shift more weight (and I do) then I need to really get a handle on my NFD calorie intake. Sigh.

BsshBossh · 08/08/2013 11:48

alwaysanauntie that's a relief.

Dotty me too. I am going to log my NFDs in MFP again from tomorrow. Just for a week to see where I am. I haven't logged in 7 months so am not looking forward to it (I found logging, though instructive at first, made me a bit obsessive). But needs must...

EagleRiderDirk · 08/08/2013 11:54

notastired yay for swimsuits!
always great news, though not so much about the needle. Hope its not too sore

Doitnow · 08/08/2013 13:22

Another fast day for me today. Struggling a bit as I had a few glasses of wine last night. lesson learnt - no boozing the day before a fast day!

I'm finding feeding the kids the hardest part of the day, the temptation to bite into their sarnies is pretty strong!

I'm trying not to eat til dinner time, so only one more meal to feed them!

Hope everyone else's day is going well.

EagleRiderDirk · 08/08/2013 14:30

today is turning into a decent fast day after all. had some hunger pangs, but nothing bad enough to peel my backside from the sofa. head seems better too but I may cave if I notice any recurrence.

vintage52er · 08/08/2013 15:07

Velma8877 welcome. Congrats on your first 7lbs loss. The great thing about this woe/wol is that there is no timescale and very few rules. We all find our way eventually, keep going Smile

For anyone who missed it, the original MM Horizon prog is on the above link.

Talkinpeace · 08/08/2013 15:24

Hi there Ezzza Yup I'm another one who did not start fasting till September.

Am fasting today but will not do 500 calories for supper, probably nearer 750 - but am doing 24 hours with only tea as that is what seems to make the most difference for me.

And Welcome to the newcomers. You are in a good place.

Dotty342kids · 08/08/2013 15:45

oooh it's harder when I'm not working and the kids are around! So far this hols i've managed to do fast days when I'm working and they're in childcare of some sort but today's the first when I'm just hanging out with them and the day is really dragging! That sounds bad - I just mean I'm not as full on busy as I would be on a working day. And of course I have to be around their food!
Hmm, next two weeks when i'm on annual leave are going to be a challenge.

MissStrawberry · 08/08/2013 16:27

I think I need to do a fast tomorrow.

No breakfast. Home made roasted leek and yellow pepper soup for lunch. Small home made meringue for snack as DS1 really wanted me to have some and dinner will be home made lasagne later. That is more than 500 cals I am sure.

I think I am doing a mix really as I am usually only eating 2 meals a day and that is more than 500 cals so on fast days I guess it has to be one meal to stick to 500 cals.

Getting very used to eating less and it is unnervingly easy.
