The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi all, I've not posted for awhile as I've been on a plateau for 8 weeks, but today I weighed myself after my first fast of the week and I've finally gotten down to 12stone! It may even be less (fingers crossed) as I'm due totm next week... I was stuck at 12.5 for ever (felt like) but I carried on and it's finally started moving again, well it actually started last week but I didn't believe it! So I have now lost exactly 2 stone in 5.5 months Smile
Those on a plateau keep at it it will pay dividends in the end. I don't exercise at all by the way, I'm about to start as I suspect the weight will come off slower now....

My targets are now to reach 10 stone 7 (can't ever remember being that weight!) as I'm 5'7" so that should look about right. I hope by Xmas ill have achieved that, or by my centre parcs trip in October Grin

Best of luck everyone x

Twinmama32 · 23/07/2013 09:36

Meant to say I 16:8 everyday now as I prefer it, life feels simpler this way...

HellesBelles396 · 23/07/2013 09:57

FD + shred today. Because it's the summer holidays, I haven't fully planned my meals yet though I have a vague idea what I'm having.

NotAsTired · 23/07/2013 09:59

monster. I eat a lot when I'm tres tired too. I just try to eat healthy protein filled snacks (peanut butter on oatcakes), apple and lowest fat cream cheese, chickpeas dressed with lime, a little oil, chilli and onions, wasabi peas. That kind of thing.

Shred is on youtube so have a look before you buy.

BetsyBell · 23/07/2013 10:18

Monster I think that's why I started the day with an avocado-based meal, stops me getting munchy. Eggs would be a good way to go too.

Actually, I think I've just realised that I no longer try and eat to compensate for lack of sleep - what a revelation! Caffeine does tend to feature heavily though...

4th FD yesterday went really well. I might be speaking too soon, but it wasn't a problem. My next fast will be Thursday which will be a work day for the first time since I started this. I am worried about that as I will really need to fast on one of my work days. We always have tins of sweets and packets of biscuits lying around. Gregg's next door isn't going to help either. Eeek! Shock

I ended up weighing myself this morning and I have lost 1lb. I'm really happy with that as I'm starting to realise that this will be a slow steady progress.

I'm also shredding and doing C25K at the same time. My short term goal is to go from obese to overweight according to the bmi checker. Blush I think I have 6lbs to go. After that, I would love to get to approx 12st for my holiday in October. (I'm 13st 4) The second goal might be a bit ambitious but no harm in trying.

Monster you can probably get The Shred for around a fiver. Although Jillian is evil and is clearly trying to kill me, it is pretty good. It's only 20 mins so its easy to fit it around my day. When I really can't be bothered, (most of the time) I remind myself it will be all over in less than half and hour and get on with it. It is on YouTube so you might have a look there first.

Good luck to anyone fasting today.

postmanpatscat · 23/07/2013 11:33

Congrats twinmama :)

monster I would rather run for an hour than Shred for 20 minutes! Those jumping jacks play havoc with my pelvic floor too Blush

monster54 · 23/07/2013 11:45

Thanks for the shred comments.

I know me too PPC just time is a serious issue for me.

I want something effective that I can do in a short space of time?

I possibly have half a chance of sticking with it!!!

I can just about stomach getting up half hour early to do a DVD and quick shower. I need to be mindful not to stretch myself too far.....

monster54 · 23/07/2013 11:46

I love that thought as well hairypotter half hour and I'm done....

Not a great lover of exercise but would like to do some toning!

irinitnolnoc · 23/07/2013 12:24

Hi Im just beginning today. My friend Emma has recommended it and im hoping it will really make a difference. Also hoping the support will help me through the tough times.
First fast day today.....

mttum · 23/07/2013 12:26

monster, don't know if you saw my post on the previous thread re toning:

dotty, I bought a book off amazon (before I decided to boycott it) called "You are your own gym". Basically it's resistance exercises you do without needing any equipment, and there are varying levels of difficulty. It's by a chap called Mark Lauren, and he's also written a book "for women" (the blurb says) called "Body by You" . Don't know how it differs tbh. Great for toning, no fees for gym or lessons . There is also a YAYOG app on iTunes which is great. Not for everyone I accept, but I swear by it. I also walk a lot (well, three or four miles a day on average).

I'm not the author's agent, just happen to think its a great book and app.

Itsaboatjack · 23/07/2013 12:33

Well I know weight can fluctuate a lot during the day but my body is ridiculous sometimes. I weighed first thing this morning (after wee) and was 10.8.4. I took kids to school, went for a 40 min run, came home, did a bit of office work, still not eaten but have had a pint of water and mug of tea. I took a little peek on the scales before I got in the shower and it has gone down to 10.6.0.

I'm ecstatic to get under 10 and a half as that was my pre holiday goal, but I just know tomorrow which is my official WI day it will bounce back up to 10.8 again.

twinmama that is a great loss well done. And it sounds like a sensible switching to 16:8.

Those doing shred kudos to you, it is indeed hardcore; but works though.

Talkinpeace · 23/07/2013 12:42

irinitnolnoc
Welcome. You'll be fine. Just remember to drink plenty in this heat and if you do need to eat, see if you can stave off till a meal time and make it high protein.

stupid News story alert
BBC reporting .... www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-23403744

which when you check shows that the true risk factors are that people skip breakfast then have a junk food snack mid morning
or are skipping breakfast because they are eating crap late at night

the people in the study were all white middle aged American men as well

so I shall carry on skipping breakfast in my healthy way thank you very much.

smellylittleorange · 23/07/2013 12:56

Am on third fast day - not hungry but booored which is a big danger - also found myself just clicking Nigella FB page for 15 mins WTF - pleased I am not feeling hungry though. DH is on a late tonight so may , may, may get Zumba Wii out!

wrigglebum · 23/07/2013 13:09

Hi all and welcome to the new people.

Fasting today, didn't do yesterday as it was picnic in the park with DS and friends, then out for dh's birthday in the evening. Our local pub has been spruced up and had a very nice meal there- gorgeous burger and then sticky toffee pudding.

Well, I weighed myself yesterday and I'm just under 10st6, so I've smashed my first target of 10st7. Next step is to get down to 10st, and maybe see if I can see 9st on the scales for the first time in a very long time!

With snacks, I do still indulge sometimes but I try and make it sociable- a piece of cake sat down with the boys or at a cafe, an ice cream in the garden with the boys, or a small handful of pistachios in front of a film in the evening. No more shoving something quickly down me just in case I feel hungry later. I still find it hard to resist picking at the boys' tea but then I tend to cook extra veg for me so I can sit with them and eat that. I'm not being too strict with it really as I wasn't really putting on weight before (just left over baby weight) and I'm a healthy weight now so don't really need to lose too much more, it would just be for vanity reasons now. I'm very strict on a fast day but other than that I try to eat to appetite and I'm not counting now (as long as the scales are going very slowly down for a bit anyway).

I keep meaning to start some exercise but it's getting the time. I walk an awful lot, dance round the kitchen and chase after two boys but nothing formal. Maybe it's time to order the shred! When DS starts school in September would probably be a good time.

MelanieCheeks · 23/07/2013 13:28

itsaboat, your weight will be lower after a run (or other exercise) as you'll have lost water through sweat. Think of boxers or jockeys exrecising before their weigh-ins.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 23/07/2013 13:29

Checking in for motivation, feeding toddler warm rolls for breakfast here on a fast day!

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 23/07/2013 13:30

Was going to fast yesterday but decided to exercise loads instead and swam a mile!

virginposter · 23/07/2013 13:45

BB thanks Flowers
mttum looked up that exercise app, it looks great. You start on one exercise (there are loads of different ones for each body part) and as your body gets used to it you then adapt it so's it's a bit harder. I really like that. Also the fact that you monitor your progress and it's only £1.99.
We have a gym in our garage which is very well equipped, from treadmill to multi gym to loose weights (DH used to do bodybuilding and is still in great shape at 66) otherwise I'd get it Smile

virginposter · 23/07/2013 14:08

Tip I agree and will continue to skip breakfast too as it suits me (it doesn't suit everyone Wink ).I notice that they mention in the first article, that those men who didn't eat breakfast had a 27% higher risk of heart problems, they didn't choose to mention that those men who ate late at night (really late) had a 55% higher risk of heart problems.
I wonder if any of them have links to the food industry, particulary grain as they advocate eating it for breakfast?

I think the list of corporate sponsors of the American Heart Association tells us all we need to know about the emphasis of the research they will commission

virginposter · 23/07/2013 14:31

Tip nuf said!

monster54 · 23/07/2013 14:34

I too will continue to skip except on occasion we have a nice breakfast on a weekend with DC!!!

Right 'the shred' has been ordered!!!! I read the amazin reviews and wow it seems positive I was worried I don't think I'll be able to commit to everyday but there were a number of reviewers that did it 4/5 days a week and saw results!!!

So I figure something has to be better than nothing!!!!!!

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 23/07/2013 14:37

Today's going well so far, visited an old friend which was great and we shared ryvita and cottage cheese for lunch, maybe fast days can be sociable afterwards!

Should I be low carbing on fast days? Was planning on spaghetti hoops on toast tonight for my dinner but does bread just fill you up temporarily? Should I be eating more protein?
