Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 Thread Number 24 - Summer's still here so skip the snack and share the meal!

BetsyBell · 22/07/2013 19:30

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Am feeling embarrassed now that you all keep quoting me
BUT
Glad that more and more people are realising that the really simple parts of food control

  • no snacking
  • 16:8
  • up your exercise

are the bits that really, really matter

thalia
if you are toned, you can get away with being a lot lighter without looking haggard ... there is a whole series of yoga exercises for head and neck that tighten up the skin and muscles under your jaw so that your face feels better as you lose weight

Thank you for the sound advice all you pro's. I know I have kept 3 lb off, just it was all in the first 3 fasts, nada since. Oh well, will keep going. Will not snack on NFD, cut down on alcohol, and have ordered the scarily sounding 'Shredding' DVD.....will see how it all goes. Postman, did your weight plateaux then? Not sure I could do a zero fast but am considering no breakfast as a rule of thumb on a NFD, so in effect going from 6ish until midday the next day, I guess this is a 16:8 thrown into the 5:2, all these numbers confusing myself! Good luck fasters, will be me tomorrow.

Not sure if this has already been discussed, but saw an article n the Independent yesterday that said research showed that not breaking your fast was bad for you. People who don't eat breakfast are 30% more likely to damage their heart as whilst fasting, blood pressure and insulin production increase and it strains the heart if you don't break this in the morning. The research adjusted for lifestyle factors and looked at fast-breaking alone.

article here

Yikes! I'm loving this WOL but am now worried - any thoughts?

Surely this WOE can not be compared though as this articles refers to those who regularly skip breakfast and are more likely to smoke be obese etc...and are male???

BetsyBell and monster54 I do think I have replaced some fat with lean muscle. And muscles are heavier but more compact. My sister who does no exercise but weighs 4 lbs less than me wears clothes a size bigger than mine. After the last month of bouncing between 121 and 123.5 lbs, I have decided to focus on my NSV's.

thanks mumof didn't have time to read thread - been away, so will have a gander tonight.

smelly the article referred to the fact that they had adjusted for lifestyle etc and it was purely fasting in isolation.

mrsarch just to add to the voices dissenting, it also works on the premise that if you skip breakfast you're more likely to eat crap. no research on those who skip breakfast but then eat healthy filling lunches.
not that I can talk after my Percy pig escapades today Blush

Has anyone tried doing hula hooping as a way of getting toned? A girlfriend plus articles on the Internet claim it uses as much calories as going for a brisk walk and is a great way of whittling down the waist. What do you think?

How many cals do you think in a chip shop portion of chips? Haven't he'd them yet but quite fancy something easy for NFD after no sleep last night Sad

monster thinkican I'm exactly the same.... I fit into things that were too tight when I was a stone lighter and yet now they fit! Weird huh? But VERY satisfying!

I'm doing my second fast of the week as I'm going glamping tomorrow and we've booked the BBQ buffet for tomorrow night and there's no way I'm missing that! I had a cheeky early weigh in, despite weighing myself yesterday (12st) today I'm 11.11! I quite literally couldn't believe my eyes, rechecked 4 times! So despite plateauing (maintaining) for several weeks in one week I've lost 4.5Ibs, haven't had that sort of loss since the early weeks!!
Hurrah hurrah hurrah Grin

betsy you look fabulous, I'd love to look how you look, how inspiring!

mumof I've told my kids to tell me off if I'm not Shredding by the time the have breakfast - I thought they might enjoy the chance to boss me around in the mornings for once!

I just love the fact it's 20mins, I can easily stay motivated for 20mins - and if I do it early it means I can just get out of bed and go for it. I get bored by anything much longer and don't bother doing it [looks at Davina dvds gathering dust on the shelf].

Twinmama and all of you with the nice words - having been somewhat overweight most of my adult life (rarely been in 'normal' BMI), and very overweight or obese in the last few years, post babies, having people say that my bod is inspiring is a big Shock

And I've 'cheated' (in the parlance of normal diets) loads - there's snacking an boozing and stuff! But overall I have massively changed how I eat and live; a fundamental life change. And I enjoy what I eat a helluva of lot more now than I ever did before.

Once again: If I can do it then you can too.

Another fast day over. 447 calories total. May do another on Friday to bank my calorie deficit as I have a big blowout meal out on Saturday eve. Am now going to go and put my feet up as I've had a very busy and somewhat stressful day (not the fasting bit).

Why did you not sleep last night mttum? Chip shop chips (according to mfp) is around the 400-500 mark. Is that within your limit?

Betsy ref. weight training and BMI. I'm still eating at a calorie deficit so it's impossible to develop new muscles in this situation. To grow new muscles I have to eat more than my TDEE daily.

When I reach goal weight I'm going to think about doing a bulk/cut cycle so that I can develop my muscles and therefore eat more in the longterm (increase my TDEE). This involves eating around 20% above TDEE for a few months to gain weight whilst lifting progressively heavy, then cutting (eating 20% under TDEE) for a few months whilst still lifting to strip the fat and reveal new muscle. There are women on the female bodybuilding forum I frequent who have perfectly toned bodies (no wobble at all) at BMI 19/20/21 - no skinny fat there! - who do exactly this and they eat loads.

Anyway, I'm at the beginning of this right now and am still in weightloss mode so I have time to research next steps strategies.
