Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 Thread Number 24 - Summer's still here so skip the snack and share the meal!

BetsyBell · 22/07/2013 19:30

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hey all. Betsy you really, really do look fantastic. I'm no end of envious of your waist.

Second FD for the week here, and struggling. Suspect TOTM is about due. Keep thinking sabotaging thoughts about just skipping this one and making up for it next week, but honestly I do that every time I get to 60kg and I've therefore lost the same 5lbs about four times this month already.

good morning all! Betsy, WOW, looking amazing! Intruiged by this 'Shredding', is it worth a go? Advice needed please......Started 5:2 4th July weighing 9.6 (I'm 5.3, 39, quite active) I'm aiming for between 8.6 - 8.10. After 1st fast down to 9.3, after second down to 9.1 1/2......now I am 6 fasts in and still weighing 9.3 after fast day, feel I'm not getting anywhere! Is this a normal pattern? Is it harder when there is not much to loose? I have a low fat content due to swimming, walking and physical job, might this make a difference? Should I really watch my NFD? Sorry for soooo many questions, feeling a bit disappointed and want this to work as I find the fasts rather enjoyable. Fast day yest went well, just tea and skim milk until 11.30, then ww fromage frais, then dinner was a M&S cod curry from count on us range (320 cals) with extra veg, bloody lovely! Good luck todays fasters, and thanks in advance for any advice.

Delilahmoo in my simplistic way of looking at it, 6 fasts = 9000 calories saved. One pound = 3500 calories. So you can expect to have lost 2-3 pounds, which you have.

BetsyBell · 24/07/2013 07:14

delilahmoo it is working, you've lost 3lbs and have done wonderful things for the health of your body. You have very little to lose so it is harder but not impossible - your Tdee will be low.

Look at how talkinpeace eats and exercises - she's tiny (slim), exercises loads and NEVER SNACKS!

Go look at her words on the tips and links thread (linked on OP), she's the model you need to follow.

tortoise kindness, thank you Smile. I'm going to have to make sure I follow Tip's example too or I'll put loads back on over the summer holidays... I can already feeling it creeping back on thanks to celebratory bottle of fizz and some chocolate last night - last day of term is an honorary Friday.

Determined to Shred first thing, while the kids have breakfast.

monster thanks for the stimulus on the goals. I would like to get down to 70 kilos or 11 st, which is 4 lbs lower than when we got married and will make me a 10/12 on top and 12/14 on bottom, bmi 22.5. Currently still on 78 kilos, would love to see it start to shift!

Will then reevaluate and see if I want to get to a solid size 12. A bit worried at my age (mid 40s) and with a pointy face (sharp chin, big nose!) I might look a bit haggard in the face if I go too low.

Want to keep up 4x/week exercise through our move and starting new job which will be tough but, I hope, possible.

betsy you look amazing, very athletic and shapely.

Nfd today, I had a big eating dinner yesterday with a posh dinner out, got to nearly 2000 calories which is a lot for me but still below tdee. Tough workout in the morning but resistance rather than cardio. Was hard doing it first thing in the morning after a fast but feeling fitter and muscles working better so not too hard to keep up motivation.

Hi everyone. You are all doing pretty good, I would say. Betsy -wow, just wow!

Fd here today. Shredded already [slightly smug icon] Grin. I am level 2, have been on this level for about 2 and a half weeks. I am not moving on till I can do it like Natalie - I'm getting there!

Notastired Just came on here to gloat that I'd Shredded already! I'm starting back on level 1 as it's been a while... it was easier than last time I started out but I still ended up in a big old sweat and puffed out so all good! The kids sat and told me how easy it looked - until they joined in Grin

Again, thank you for the wonderful compliments - remember: If I can do it you all can too, just stick at it everyone.

Also, the lycra holds everything in - it's all a bit 'loose' under there, but I'm working on it. I've got the general body size I'm after but now it's time to focus on toning up.

Woohoo. Official WI day here today and I am 10.7.4.

Holiday tomorrow where the goal will be to not do too much damage. I'm happy to skip breakfast most days, keep alcohol to just the evenings (got the kids with us so it will be limited anyway) and enjoy meal times.

monster54 ref. short and longterm goals :

Original BMI was 36 (just going into size 20 clothes, which shocked me into dieting as I couldn't find any clothes that suited my style at that size)

Original BMI goal was 24 which I reached recently (size 12)

New BMI goal is now 21 (size 8-10 on me I think; currently size 10)

We're still waiting for your Before and After pics Bssh!!!

Serious question though: you're doing loads of weight training and stuff aren't you? Don't you find that effectively increases your BMI or do you make adjustments to allow for muscle mass?

My BMI's 22.9 but I can't see myself decreasing it that much more - I'd rather replace the fat on my thighs with muscle but it won't reduce my BMI.

delilah I started at bmi 24 63.7kg and planned to reach 55.3kg (8st 10). I also found that the numbers were fairly steady after the first month and I increased my exercise and did a zero fast every other week. That seemed to get things moving again and I reached my goal in 11 weeks. Might be worth a try?

itsa have a fantastic holiday

Well done to all you shredders!

Flew back to home country on Sat. Friends and family who have not seen me in the last four months swear that I have lost tons of weight. Actual weight lost is only about 5 lbs although being a shortie, that was almost 4% of my body weight. I do think this diet really does take away the inches. I exercise regularly - weight sessions at the gym 3 times per week, 14 km bicycle rides twice a week with a tough 7km uphill route. At 57, I am more muscular than I have been in the last 20 years. Now to make sure I don't put back the lbs during the next two weeks while I am back in home comfort food territory. Will be depending on this thread to keep me motivated.

What is shredding? I'm looking for a good workout that will help me tone up. At the moment I'm just walking/running but I want to do something else as well.
Second fd today and currently on my third cup of coffee. How important is it that you're close to your TDEE on nfd? I've been struggling to eat enough and I am usually about 200 cals below.

Back home and into my first FD in nearly 2 weeks. Initial jump on scales showed a gain of nearly every last pound I had lost, so close to 9 pound (total liss had been nearly 12 pound) However I do believe a bit of that of that is fluid and other yucky stuff. Whatever it is, it's not getting a chance to stick, planning on adf'ing it for the next week or so which should get me back on track. Annoyed with myself, while I didn't snack for the most part, I ate wayyy too much and what was worse, I didn't enjoy it. Managed 3 jogs and a few walks but they just couldn't make up for the food.
Hungry now, scrambled egg (1 full egg, 1 extra egg white) and ham for lunch. Something light for dinner, not sure what's best. Then away for 2 days with work, it will be hard doing and FD on Friday but I'll find a way. Deliberately didn't book breakfast in my hotel so that helps. Also kept v busy at these things, distraction is my friend I've found.
All this talk of the shred is making me consider digging out a DVD, although I think I'll pick my BFF Davina, Jillian scares me! Have a good day y'all

Fast day disaster yesterday!!

I'd planned and calculated my calories to include homemade coconut sorbet, was really really looking forward to it, bought all the ingredients.

Then threw the coconut milk all over the floor Sad

No yummy sorbet for me. Still is it good that I saved 100 cals, and couldn't find anything I wanted to replace it with?

well done itsa and think

apparently I've told my body enough now that it is a 14 and its listened. Grin

except all my summer bottoms are 16+ and are literally falling off me in some cases. so I used a tip tip! I just raided the local charity shops. 2 pairs of jeans, 2 pairs of shorts, 2 skirts and a dress all for under £21, and all in the pocket of charities.

however my celebration at that haul has meant me and Percy pig having a fling. thankfully its an nfd and I skipped breakfast!

It's funny you say that, I had read an interesting article about fasting being more effective at burning simply fat reserves....

It was highlighted with an example of a lady who was bridesmaid and whole a dress at 11st (I think it was) put on a load of weight etc afterwards, then start 5:2. She was down to 12 stone and tried on the dress and it was too big!!! Yet she was still a stone heavier!!!

I can back this up to an extend. I'm currently 10st 13lbs and am wearing a number of clothes I was wearing at 10st!!

I wonder if there is any scientific proof.

And on other news...JILLIAN HAS BEEN DISPATCHED AND WINGING HER WAY!!!

ALthough not sure how its going to go down with DH as he's happy with how I am looking even though I'm not and my mini goal at the moment is 10st 7lbs!!

What an upbeat bunch we are today. Thalia I'm really hoping that your lovely sounding indulgent meal surprises your metabolism into kickstarting some loss.

After a hard morning I broke through to a perfect FD. Had lunch with old friends and just had a skim latte while they ate and didn't even mind or really notice, then home for planned FD chicken soup, I think I'm probably as low as 400 for the day. DH has fallen off the wagon and is munching toast and I am perfectly happy with my camomile tea. And I've even packed myself a filling breakfast for tomorrow, shaved turkey and a boiled egg and some wholeweat crackers, yummmmmm.

Off to polish my halo bed now, have a good day all.
