The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

That's encouraging news wrigglebum. Thanks! I am excited to be under 10 stone and think 9 stone would be about right.

Gilbertus · 01/08/2013 21:04

So my four weeks on this woe is up! Promised myself I'd do it for four weeks... Weighing in tomorrow and think I've lost about 4lbs, certainly not as much as I hoped. I fluctuate around 3lbs anyway. Having said that I had an easy fast day today so maybe I'll keep it up.

alwaysanauntie · 01/08/2013 21:21

JB30 glad it panned out calorie-wise for you, I can pretty much match you for gluttony today though Wink, my healthy start of porridge then prawn cocktail salad for lunch (only 80cal version not full on) were wiped out by my colleague's 10 year work anniversary cakes and biscuits. Had a sultana Danish, 3 choc chunk cookies, a yum yum and as there was nothing left in fridge for dinner tonight, I had to have a bacon, coleslaw and fried egg sarnie for dinner. Comes in at 1800 cals, but there's the final piece of choc fudge cake that DH sitting STILL hasn't eaten and I can hear it's muffled cries of please eat me... please! and the ice cream which might counteract the hot, humid weather...

Anyway, have had a rotten cold this week, so no FDs, but came in around 400-500 cals under last 2 days so should remain level this week.

Sticky great to see stats like that, gives me renewed hope that I'll get there someday if I stick with it, as do all the tales of scary plateaus (bssh, dotty, invino etc too)

wriggle am impressed with your determination today, hope it's duly rewarded!

alwaysanauntie · 01/08/2013 21:27

somewhere please see my post above. I am yet to control my inner greedy pig! But at least with this woe I can think, "oh well, that was silly, but at least when I next fast I know it will undo the damage (at least partially)" so I don't feel so guilty and make things 10 times worse by guilt-bingeing on top!

Gilbertus at least you'll have given it a try, remember there are all the other health benefits, and if you find it easy it's worth doing for them alone :)

alwaysanauntie · 01/08/2013 21:31

Just to add, I followed TiPs tip and entered cals for choc cake and ice cream, and as it was over 500, decided it wasn't worth it - woohoo!! Huge NSV for me (please ignore rest of what I ate today though!) Grin

JB30 · 01/08/2013 21:37

Good Woman not having the cake Always - thats a great idea from Tip - going to use that! If only I'd paused mid miniature choc binge and checked mfp. Ah well, I knew what I was doing - I just couldn't stop!!!
But I'm proud now, I closed the kitchen after dinner and I got my ironing done - smug mug here

Shanster · 01/08/2013 21:44

Hi, can I join you? I'm 3/4 through my first fast day and am finding it much more challenging than I thought I would. Feel quite dizzy and am feeling real hunger (not experienced that feeling in a long time I don't think).

I have some lentil soup cooking for my dinner later, after a small portion of porridge and fruit for breakfast/lunch.

Does the fasting get any easier???

ceebeegeebies · 01/08/2013 21:49

sticky it makes sense now...I was on the verge of going to my GP about it as I couldn't ignore the amount of hair that is falling out much longer! Yep I know this isn't extreme in any way but it clearly shocked my body at the beginning!!

Breadandwine · 01/08/2013 22:04

Shanster the first fast day is the hardest, and it does get easier - much easier! So much so that many people look forward to them.

But my first fast day - when I only went down to 1200 calories (I'm a bloke) - I found myself googling "What can you eat on a fast day?" Grin

Now I can go 48 hours without even thinking about it.

ATB, B&W

Shanster · 01/08/2013 22:15

Thanks BreadandWine, I just had a cup of tea and feel a bit revived. Will persevere!!

UnrequitedSkink · 01/08/2013 22:22

I'm just at the end of my second day...and I'm starving! I had dinner at 7pm and felt stuffed but two hours later it's all gone (was mostly veg, and a tortilla) and I have to go to bed empty. I think I have about 80 cals left to eat...might have a spoonful of natural yoghurt and a few raspberries and see if that helps!

Talkinpeace · 01/08/2013 22:50

just so y'all know I'm human ...
am stuffed and half cut after a HUGE Greek dinner
sleep now XXX

BsshBossh · 01/08/2013 23:02

Shanster it gets easier. Six months in for me and I rarely feel physical hunger on FDs anymore. Today was tough for me but it was more mental than physical.

HairyPotter · 01/08/2013 23:24

FD all done for today. Went pretty well, soup for lunch and a rather tasty M&S chicken Jalfrezi. And all for 488 cals Grin Shred done as well.

We went out for lunch and dinner yesterday and actually left half of my tuna melt panini because I wasn't hungry! This has never happened before. I never leave food on my plate if I can help it Blush

We did hit the local carvery but after a small breakfast and a half eaten lunch, I pushed the boat out and had a pud. Eton mess, and very nice it was too. I was actually looking forward to today's FD after that!

virginposter · 02/08/2013 00:13

Interesting documentary coming up on Thursday 8 August BBC2 9.00pm called "The men who made us thin". Jacques Perretti looks into the diet industry. Has a good review in Radio Times Smile

peplum41 · 02/08/2013 01:29

Lots of interesting posts today...

dotty and invin51, I thought I was the only one challenging bsshbossh to a plateau-off! I've been bouncing up and down since early May, but I realised last week that I'm now dithering about in the mid 11st rather than the high elevens. I did see 11st6 once at the beginning of July, but a month of wine and chocolate in excess and insufficient exercise scared it away.

stickygingerbread, thanks for the stats and info. Ive got the dreaded PCOS, and I've noticed the much shorter cycle, my hair seems to be thinner at the sides of my temples, like male pattern baldness. Not too keen on this development!

wrigglebum how did you manage to cram in a shred with a chicken-poxed baby, and a lego wielding 4yr old during a heat wave? How?

vjhist hope you managed to stick it out, I think its a good idea to reward yourself in some small way when you successfully conquered a fast hurdle, helps the psyche accept the deprivation next time you fast. (no idea if that makes sense!)

unrequitedskink l used to really struggle going to bed hungry, another poster recommended having a bath. But now I'm used to it, and never cease to be amazed by how UNhungry you wake up the next day.

Hi mehefin, enjoying your veggies? And hi to ceebeegeebies, glad you're back fasting. Weird you work in Preston too! I bet we've unwittingly clocked each other....if you see a balding fat woman in baggy clothes...

Phew, not posted for ages then have a binge post. Phone now scarily hot.

berri · 02/08/2013 02:56

Hi all, can't even try to keep up with this thread so will continue with the sporadic posting!

PandaPops76....we are in v similar situations! I am 9st and trying to get to 8.5, I am 5ft 4in and also bfeeding a 14 week old DD. DS is 4. Maybe we can spur each other on!

The good news though is that I've been doing this for 3 weeks now and lost 6lbs. I'm so pleased, I lost virtually nothing after DD was born and stayed at the same weight for weeks despite giving up my beloved chocolate & running a few times a week. Delighted to see a change in numbers finally Grin

Has anyone else done 4:3? I had FDs on Mon & Weds and thinking about doing Fri too (living in USA at the mo so still Thurs here!) seeing as we're going out for a big boozy dinner on Saturday...is it beneficial or a bit overkill?

frenchfancy · 02/08/2013 06:21

ceebees and sticky I had major hair loss too, also on the verge of seeing GP, but now my weight has stabilised (I'm maintaining at the moment) the hair loss has stopped. It was very even, no bald patches or anything, and I'm pretty convinced it is growing back from the roots, so it is like my body getting rid of dead unwanted cells.

Anyone else reading this - do not let it put you off, my hair actually looks really good at the moment, probably because I do so I'm showing an interest in my hair.

JB30 · 02/08/2013 06:21

Berri i do 4:3, or I have since 1 week before hols and this is my second week of it after hols. My reasoning for doing it is Friday is a danger day for me between dinner/drinks/nibbles and it can herald the start of a weekend long binge. So while my fd on friday isnt a true 500, more a mini fd of about 1000, it has a good effect on my weekend behaviour,
All this good behaviour talk has galvinised me into getting up to do a jog - get it out of the way and distract me from food as it will be a natural 16:8 due to mini fast but I will have a skinny cappuchino for elevenses

postmanpatscat · 02/08/2013 06:36

Morning all

Are you lot mind readers? Yesterday morning I researched diet and hair loss and now you're all talking about it! DP is getting worried about the trail I'm leaving behind me. I've tried the 'I use hairspray so none falls out during the day, it's either evening or when styling so it looks like more' argument but he was unconvinced. I already take a multivitamin and Feroglobin every day. Perhaps it's more normal than we realised.

I'm fasting today, having gained 1.1kg since my new low on Wednesday morning!! We ate out last night but I'm fairly sensible at the moment due to looming holiday so I don't know where all that came from. I usually only fluctuate a few hundred grams over a week.

mttum waiting with baited breath for your weigh in!

Anyone read through the thread in AIBU re 5:2 leads to anorexia? Most respondents seem to have a fear of feeling hungry.

ceebeegeebies · 02/08/2013 06:44

So so glad my hair loss is normal and now has an explanation! totally agree that i don't want to put anyone off as my hair looks good, no thinning patches etc.

Am off to read the thread in AIBU now...

EagleRiderDirk · 02/08/2013 07:14

Am I the only person who hasn't lost any hair? Having said that I have so much that maybe I just wouldn't notice. I have found, but that was before this woe, that I needed to keep it on the shorter/bob side as otherwise I lose a lot. Nice to know if it happens though I'm not alone and it may be normal.

EagleRiderDirk · 02/08/2013 07:17

postman 'people will just claim theyre on a fast day all the time' - no different to those who hide behind any other diet. I never held any truck with dukan, atkins, etc. etc. but I'm not going to slag them off without looking at the science of it. I found it all a bit ignorant.

BsshBossh · 02/08/2013 07:39

First weigh-in for two weeks which included a holiday, TOM and return to exercise (quite bad muscle soreness & water retention) and I'm 1 lb up. Not as bad as I thought.

Gilbertus · 02/08/2013 07:49

Weigh 10 13 today which breaks the magic 11 stone barrier, however I have been here many times before. I think I was 11.5 when I started so that's 6lbs in four weeks. Still not completely convinced about the benefits and tbh the restrictions of the fasting days are just as food obsessive as any diet out there. But having said that if I can carry on losing weight while still troughing and boozing at weekends it's fine by me Wink
