The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

wow invinoveritas that's brilliant! I may challenge you for title of longest stall soon, in fact I seem to be creeping back up, not down at the moment!
Fasting today, and am sweating to death, it's gone mad hot here again.
Turkey meatballs in a tomatoey, herby sauce plus small amount of pasta for tea. Only 3hrs to go!

mehefin · 01/08/2013 14:59

thalia there is a link somewhere up thread to an article by Nia Shanks about fasting and stress courtesy of Eagle and Melanie (I think ).

I found it really helpful made me realise that for me extreme heat was one stress too far and I changed things for a bit.

Now temperatures are more normal (here anyway) I can easily go 20 hours without food again. Lost 2lb in 3 weeks eating all my veg so that was pleasing

Peplum I have a strict rule at work to never eat anything where fingers might have been !

vjhist85 · 01/08/2013 15:07

Not posted here often (in fact think I introduced myself then promptly disappeared!) but am in week 3, w1 I did well, w2 fd2 failed miserably, and today's fd is a real struggle! Why is it that the second fd of the week is so much harder? I need some inspiration/advice/talking away from the bread bin...

invinoveritas51 · 01/08/2013 15:21

Thanks Dotty - but definitely not sweating to death up here, north of the border; was nearly drowned this morning in the downpour!

BsshBossh · 01/08/2013 15:48

invinoveritas51 hurrah, I remain the plateau champion then Grin. Oi Dotty don't even think of challenging my 4 month record Wink.

BsshBossh · 01/08/2013 15:56

vjhist85 step away from the bread bin. What's the point? Giving up so soon on any new health regime means you'll never lose the weight. Each time you give in to temptation you continue to be overweight.

Hope that worked Wink.

Talkinpeace · 01/08/2013 15:59

vjhist85
before you take a mouthful or sip of anything on a fast day, put the calories into MFP or write them down.
And then decide whether they are worth the guilt and stress before you eat them.

Am currently v v hungry on a NFD but we are going out for supper later so I'll have another pint of water

vjhist85 · 01/08/2013 16:16

Thanks all. Didn't quite resist but what I did have was only about 100cals and more importantly I avoided the bread bin! Can easily turn tonight's dinner into 400 cal, my usual problem is that when I break, I just think 'screw it, might as well pig out now' but I know it's that mindset that has made me so big in the first place. Dd down for a nap and I'm enjoying a large iced water with lemon. Smile

vieenrose · 01/08/2013 17:49

Just checking in to say goodbye to all of you, I'm off on my four week hols. For once, I'm not going to feel ashamed in my swimming cossie!
Thank you all for your great advice and encouragement. I just hope I won't fall off the wagon too hard.
Oh well, I'll be back in September dying for a fast.

Good luck to all my fellow fasters today

EagleRiderDirk · 01/08/2013 18:19

enjoy vie

Dotty342kids · 01/08/2013 18:20

Four weeks holiday! wow vie you lucky thing, have a fabulous time and see you on the other side Smile

Breadandwine · 01/08/2013 18:24

Have a great holiday, vieenrose!

Keep in mind your secret weapon - the mini-fast!

You can have just one or two of these a week, if you wish - or one every day if need be! Grin

Whatever, enjoy yourself. Smile

mttum · 01/08/2013 18:32

Niece's wedding tomorrow, which means day off work, which means - I keep thinking it's Friday and NFD! Been out to buy emergency supplies of fizzy water, and just sipping a hot marmite drink. I could have my 600 cals I suppose but don't really want to, as most fast days I don't eat anything, and it's fine. Not long to go now, anyway and tomorrow to look forward to Smile

Well done all Thursday fasters, not long to go now and then it's...the weekend WineWineBiscuitBiscuitGrin

wrigglebum · 01/08/2013 18:59

Well I've survived a fast day with super hot weather, a 15mo with chicken pox, 4yo building Lego, a walk to nursery and back twice and a shred. Had about a spoonful of veg curry at boys' dinner time but otherwise just water so far. I'd better have lost some fat after that!

I looked online and my bmi is just over 23 now (it was just a touch over 25 in March when I started cutting out too much junk food), I'd like to get rid of a bit more fat and get down to just under 10st, then I'll reassess when I get there!

vieenrose · 01/08/2013 19:18

thank you everybody

and thx for the mini-fast tip!

JB30 · 01/08/2013 19:22

Really enjoying catching up on everyone's chat after a long day at work and the bringing kids to see relatives. Had a great weigh in, I had put on about 5.4 pounds over the holiday, today I'm down 2.6 so hurrah! 1 week after hols and only 2.8 from my preholiday weight, but oh dear what an nfd. I am blushing at my boldness, I had breakfast, white toast (as prev mentioned, my version of crack)plus half scone with jam and cream, let's call that breakfast dessert an hour after breakfast. Nothing til about 2, when I discovered the chocolates at the conf I was at, oh yeah, prob 8-10 of them. They fed the hunger beast who arose and DEMANDED a toasted cheese sambo with crisps. Then 2 x mini bars when I went visiting.
Oh yeah, and pasta bake with garlic bread for tea.
That's got to be within TDEE right Confused
From 500 cals to 5000 in 1 day, special talents eh?

stickygingerbread · 01/08/2013 19:56

Hello my fellow fasters. I come bearing measurements and data. Been doing ADF since early January, and had various measurements just this morning, the day after a fast day.
Starting weight: 165 lbs.
Weight today: 137 lbs.
BMI today: 23
Body fat percentage today: 30.71%
I held a device that apparently measured bio-electrical impedance caused by fat, then gives a body fat percentage readout.

The information they gave me says that the optimum body fat percentage range for women is 20% to 30%, so my # is just slightly over the top of the healthy range. I am very small framed so would like to work toward maybe 22-25% body fat. But very happy to be so close to crossing into the healthy range.

Weight loss has definitely slowed in the past two months. Earlier on, the loss averaged to about 6 lbs. a month, but now the average overall is 4 lbs./month.

I am also happy with the change in my diet and especially better blood sugar levels. I really like this lifestyle and that I can still bake and play in the kitchen, and need not be a puritan about it. Or that I can indulge and it isn't the end of the world, eh JB30. We just get back to it. Also, drastically cutting refined carbs has improved my digestion along with blood sugar levels.

I am one of the posters with PCOS and have also been tracking cycles. The dietary changes seem to have slightly shortened the cycle by 2 days, but it has been very regular.

Another interesting thing is that about 3 months after starting this way of life, I experienced telogen effluvium, just as happened after giving birth to my children. For about a month there was a great deal of hair loss, then it tapered off, and now there is a lot of short new growth. I moulted. Grin

BsshBossh · 01/08/2013 20:02

Special talents indeed JB30 :)

FD nearly coming to an end again - will eat in an hour. Weigh in tomorrow but doubt I've lost as I gained over the holiday and have severe water retention due to severe muscle soreness and end of TOM. Feel like a water bag.

But don't care. Have I mentioned before my 4 month stall? Grin

JB30 · 01/08/2013 20:06

That's really encouraging to hear Sticky. Your weigh loss is exactly what I'm aiming for, although I'm starting heavier. When I read these types of stories I just know I'll get there, albeit it in a few months. The time will pass regardless, better it passes while I'm happily living the WOL rather than searching for quick fix. Very interesting about the hair, no specific condition but my god hair everywhere! Would love if that stopped!
Tomorrow I'm having a mini fast so today is history (And only 2000 cals in the end) I started to think about whether I wanted something else, and had to go Eastenders (have a word with myself, followed by dry slap!) Cup o tea is all I'm getting and a spot of ironing to keep my fat fingers from wandering fridgeways
Funny though how certain foods make you lose the plot - white bread and chocolate in my case!

BsshBossh · 01/08/2013 20:09

stickyginger amazing stats! So inspirational! Thanks so much for sharing them and your experiences.

ceebeegeebies · 01/08/2013 20:34

sticky - very interesting about the hair...I have been following this WOE for 3 plus months and for the last few weeks, I have been shedding hair like you would not believeShock I comb my hair and it is full!! it is EXACTLY like after having the DC but without having a baby Wink

so is this a recognised side effect of this and will it stop??

ceebeegeebies · 01/08/2013 20:44

Ok, I am answering my own question...I have googled telegon effluvium and it is the same condition as happens after childbirth and is a result of a major stress including sudden weight loss, crash diets and eating disorders Hmm

wrigglebum · 01/08/2013 20:55

That's really amazing sticky, well done! Bet you feel like a different person now.

I have fat measuring scales that work in the same way. I know lots of people are sceptical about how well they work but from my experience they come out with similar measurements to other ways of measuring. I've been measured before with calipers on various skin folds and tried the US Navy way of measuring based on height, weight, neck, waist and hips measurements), and they were within a couple of percent of the scales. I think the scales tend to over estimate your body fat so you are within healthy range I'd say.

stickygingerbread · 01/08/2013 20:58

ceebeegeebies you too? I have never ready anything associating the big shed with this way of eating. I learned the term 'telogen effluvium' here on mn in relation to post-childbirth, and at the time it was was a relief to know why I was shedding so much after dc2. Was very surprised when it started in April, and I reflected on what had changed 3 months before - only the eating style. The hair loss especially in the shower was alarming, and I was constantly feeling shed hairs poking me.

In my case, I would say my lifestyle change probably mainly lead to an immediate and overall substantial lowering of my blood sugar levels. Definitely for the best, but that it was a shock perhaps goes to show what a wrong path I had been on. Because there isn't anything really extreme in my diet. One day regular, one day restricted but healthy, and much more nutrient dense, I would think - more veg and lean protein. Doesn't fit the categories of crash diet or sudden weight loss - has been gradual with no extremes.

somewherebecomingrain · 01/08/2013 21:01

Oh god. Have had a feast day. Lots of cheese and butter. The culmination was ice cream plus squirty cream. A lot.

Does anyone else go BIG on an NFD?

It all started cause my mil was eating lunch and I felt I should eat with her. Wasn't hungry at all and all the signals got confused.

Supposed to fast tomorrow and really want to. But going to a wedding. Also concerned I've sabotaged my latest weight loss.

Will not eat till I get to the wedding. Will brew that coffee.

Xx
