The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

notastired that would be brilliant! How do I do that?

Ps I don't really log fluids on Mfp as mostly I drink water, black coffee and green tea. If I have juice on an nfd it's in there

Also, I can't find most of the strength and resistance exercises I do on Mfp so some of my workouts look a bit sparse!

silverbeetle · 26/07/2013 18:09

Taken me forever to catch up on the posts and Ladies you ALL look bloody amazing Thanks for sharing. It shows how realistic this WOL really is.
I may try and post some photos, trouble is I don't seem to have many before shots as I didn't like my photo taken Blush but now I'm about 35lbs lighter it doesn't frighten me so much.

Just come back from a lovely weeks holiday in Whitstable where I drank, ate and snacked to my hearts content - felt so decadent. Don't tell Tip Wink.
However as is to be expected the scales this morning showed a 4.5lb increase. So it's back on the wagon today with a nice fast, it weirdly feels so good to have hunger pangs again. Here's hoping I can shift it in the next week or so. I'm really hoping that as it went on so quick it will be equally quick in coming off again - fingers crossedHmm

Talkinpeace · 26/07/2013 19:02

thalia you should log your fluids - to ensure you get the balance right and that there are no hidden calories

silver Grin

NotAsTired · 26/07/2013 19:12

I am SoTiredAgain on mfp, so send me a friend request. And change your diary settings so that friends can see the food and exercise log. Once you do that, we can have a look at what's going on, if anything.

And yes, all fluids should be logged too - although I am not so great at logging all my water intake. Blush

NotAsTired · 26/07/2013 19:15

Feel a bit icky. My mum bought DS some chips while we were out. He ate about 5 and got bored and yes, I ate the rest. Not a happy bunny. I had this whole internal monologue as well - in slow motion - but it did not stop me from picking one up and then the rest. Angry at myself.

HellesBelles396IsDeeplyUncool · 26/07/2013 19:24

Sounds like a mixed bag today in terms of success and concern.

I haven't lost anything more but I did have to victories.

  1. I was at a buffet lunch and - through choice rather than self-control - I had 2 sandwich quarters, a cocktail-sized cheese sausage rollo(iykwim) and a cheese twist.

  2. I was out for dinner and the only thing that tempted me was a starter: prawn salad. Normally, at that restaurant, I would have had at least 2 if not three courses.

In short, I am pleased because this shows a shift in my attitude towards food.

BsshBossh · 26/07/2013 19:40

silverbeetle I'm back from a week on the coast too. Ate far too much. Also got TOM. Unlike you, I daren't weigh myself! However, have managed a good FD today as we were driving back and also DH fasted too so it was easy. Back to normal gym and fasting routine next week.

BsshBossh · 26/07/2013 19:42

Helles those are even better victories than a number on the scale because it shows how much control you now have of your appetite. Well done!

BsshBossh · 26/07/2013 19:43

tiggy how's your first day of fasting going?

silverbeetle · 26/07/2013 20:36

Bssh hope it's not too bad when you jump on the scales. I must admit I had to shut my eyes and hold my breath before I looked at the reading. I was surprised that I hadn't put on more.

It's good to feel back in control again Smile

thaliablogs · 26/07/2013 20:37

talkinpeace how would there be hidden calories in black coffee, Green tea, water?

I drink water about every 5 mins so v tiresome to log.

I do log juice.

MelanieCheeks · 26/07/2013 21:19

the target dress

For the nosey!

monster54 · 26/07/2013 21:24

thalia I personally wouldn't log zero calorie fluids. Pointless.

Be conscious your getting your 2 litres. But logging absolutely everything drags you down and if your like me it's it what this wol is about....use mpf as a check to make sure portion control is in place.

Mm on his website advises a switch to ADF or 4:3 if things aren't moving? I 4:3 and it's slowly going. We all have different metabolising!!

monster54 · 26/07/2013 21:24

*its not what

EagleRiderDirk · 26/07/2013 21:25

Thalia black coffee isn't calorie less. though they're only somewhere between 1-4. not sure about green tea. sort of depends how much your drinking them. I log my coffee and tea, but not water. can't be bothered with water!

monster54 · 26/07/2013 21:25

Gorgeous mel love it!!!!

monster54 · 26/07/2013 21:27

Coffee does also act as a diuretic so be careful to top up your water to compensate!!

HellesBelles396IsDeeplyUncool · 26/07/2013 21:30

Pretty dress Melanie - very stylish.

I agree Thalia so I log a bottle of water as 2 cups and my, frankly enormous, cups of green tea as 2 cups. It's fairly easy to remember how many of each I've had.

If I recall correctly, coffee has a calorific content - though it is small, it might be worth logging. It might be cancelled out by stimulating the metabolism - I don't know.

Thanks Bssh I feel happy about it as I knew I needed to reset my eating habits. This woe is the only time I've been able to do that without a couple of weeks without food due to tonsilitis or a uti or something else unpleasant. Much nicer this way :)

alwaysanauntie · 26/07/2013 21:31

Had a pretty good fast day here after a rubbish one yesterday (TIP avert your eyes! DD ill and I troughed a whole load of ice cream and chocolate cake Blush also did the same day before Blush Blush). Just waiting for rump steak to cook and have with peppercorn sauce, new pots and salad. Manage to exert enough will power not to dig into the doritos and tzatziki though, so that's some progress!

Bssh love the new hair do, you look soooo young! Betsy I too am envious of the teeny weeny waist you have! I've been noticing a lot more since starting this woe what different shapes we all come in: some have massive boobs and little legs, some have the opposite, some carry weight around their waist, some on their legs, some are perfect hourglasses... and it's been quite a revelation as I too didn't appreciate my 18 year old, 8 stone, toned body (oh, to have it back again! May take some time...). Anyway, I guess the self-awareness only really comes with time and experience, at least we've all woken up to ourselves now and are taking control again.

somewhere great news about the MIL, chirp well done on reaching your first goal, take the positive feeling and channel it into loosing the next stone.

Happy weekend everyone! Enjoy some Wines and be happy :)

HellesBelles396IsDeeplyUncool · 26/07/2013 21:31

Green tea sometimes given as 1 but usually 0 calories.

alwaysanauntie · 26/07/2013 21:34

melanie love the dress, quite retro - thanks for keeping us nosey ones happy!

Talkinpeace · 26/07/2013 21:47

Thalia
Sussed it ..... I drink water about every 5 mins so v tiresome to log.
therein lies your problem.
You have to give your system a break. A proper chance to work out what its got and to digest it, even water.
So, have the same amount of water BUT
have it in a large glass not more than once every couple of hours
ditto other drinks ....
you NEED to have breaks on your intake of all sorts

Londonmrss · 26/07/2013 22:05

Really? About the water? I haven't read that anywhere; I would never have thought that. How on earth would that stop you losing weight?

Talkinpeace · 26/07/2013 22:15

less that its water than that its a steady stream of ANYTHING hitting the stomach so it does not get to finish its "wash cycle"
the whole principle is to allow your system to deal with a meal and then have a break

also, in one of DHs books about voice training, they were very clear that a large drink of water every now and then is much better for you than constant sipping
and he's found it works : a large drink at the start of a session is better than sipping ...

BsshBossh · 26/07/2013 23:00

Successful FD completed. Only 6:1 this week due to holiday but back to 5:2 next week. No weigh in this week (also due to TOM). Have a good weekend all.
