The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

PPC 45? Your body looks 25! Remind me, I know you're a runner - (marathons?), is that the majority of your exercise or do you do other stuff too? And if so, what? Because I'm totally going to copy your regime Grin Not that I can do long distance - I can't break 5k barrier.

Also well done house, great willpower JB and here's to getting in that dress Melanie !

chirpchirp · 26/07/2013 11:07

Due to delayed train this morning I couldn't get to boots when it was still quite and I have to go and face the scales of shame during the lunch time rush! Will report back after 1pm. Last weigh in 15st 10lb. If I can achieve 2lb loss I will officially have lost the stone and a half baby weight from almost three years ago Grin.

postmanpatscat · 26/07/2013 11:08

betsy I've never done a marathon in my life and don't want to either! Longest is 10.5miles about 5 weeks ago, normal anything 5-10k. Sometimes, like yesterday, 40 mins on elliptical then 6k run, other times I run outside which is fairly flat.

I only work term time too and find it easier to eat less at home. I think it's because I can keep busy and eat when I want, IF I want, because I'm not obliged to eat around the school timetable!

NotAsTired · 26/07/2013 11:13

Thanks, postmanscat. I think that's the most I've ever lost in a week. Grin. Am doing 16:8 today.

You look great btw. Smile

Good luck, chirp hopefully it's a positive result. You are very brave to do your WI in such a public space.

BetsyBell · 26/07/2013 11:19

PPC You've given me hope then! I'm sure I can break the 5k barrier (or just run more often...) I do a lot of cycling too, though this never feels like proper exercise really. It's Itsa who's the marathon runner I think...

And, you're right, I just need to control myself when at home, be mindful about it.

Apologies for all the long posts everyone, I'm just trying to get myself in the right mindset. School holidays were always a danger zone for me before I started 5:2 and I don't want to undo my hard work for no good reason!

I'm doing 16:8 today (NFD) which means no more eating after 6.30.

thaliablogs · 26/07/2013 11:41

betsy that nfd thing is the hard part for me. When I use Mfp it shows me my usual days are around 1800 if I am not being careful- extra calories come from chocolate which I usually over indulge in in the evenings. I eat pretty healthily, lots of salads and veg, very little red meat (less than once a week) no white carbs unless I am baking etc.. When I am careful and in the heat when i eat less, it's closer to 1400.

My tdee is 2300 even with only limited exercise, really I am in the moderate category. So I am struggling to get tdee up to 2000 cals, in the first 2 weeks it was more like 1400. So I've tried getting close to tdee and under indulging on nfds and neither seems to work!

So it feels to me like my body is really holding on to the weight for some reason, perhaps after years of being up and down the same 10lb weight loss!

Anyway, onwards and upwards, we'll see what the weekend brings.

ELR · 26/07/2013 11:53

Morning all, fasted yesterday and managed to maintain my weight but not the low of under 10 from a few weeks ago! I'm really hoping to see that again at some point!
betsy I'm in the same boat with being active in the school holidays, I have literally been laying down reading all day yesterday and today. The kids don't want to go out they are just enjoying being at home in the pool and garden.
dotty I sabotaged my fast day yesterday with a pack of jelly tots and a mini flake around 9.30pm too, must be something about the time!!
bshhh what a fab set of photos!
Good luck today's fasters.....

somewherebecomingrain · 26/07/2013 12:08

Hi all

Big news - my 75 year old Mil who is doing 5:2 religiously has
A) lost tonnes of weight, but get this
B) had an agonising snap in her bad knee and a few seconds later... it wasn't a bad knee any more! Her mobility has dramatically improved as a result - She can get out of chairs, and go to the shops without her stick.

Fasting today - why does coffee help so much?

BetsyBell · 26/07/2013 13:11

Somewhere Wow, fab news for you MIL :)

Coffee helps because it's an appetite suppressant and gives you false energy! I love it (though can't drink it after 11am if I want to sleep at night sadly).

Just been clearing out a forgotten cupboard - found a tight fitting dress made for me aged 18... yup, it fits Grin - bit dated now though Wink

Why did I think I was such a fatty then? Idiot youth!

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 26/07/2013 13:14

Woke hungry after FD and had coffee with coconut oil. Also green tea. Hunger more or less gone so I can have nice salmon and scrambled eggs once dropped toddler at preschool . Yay! Weighed in and now into the magic just under 150lb. Goal is 140lb.
So pleased.

tiggyhop · 26/07/2013 13:53

First fasting day for me today!

chirpchirp · 26/07/2013 14:01

Just back from boots. Got my 2lb loss and officially weight less than I did when I fell pregnant back in 2010. I'm still grossly overweight but this seemed like a bit of a mile stone!

Back at my desk enjoying my first food of the day. Next goal - get under 200lbs.

Hope you all have a good weekend.

Dotty342kids · 26/07/2013 14:06

Well done chirp, that's great news and you should be very proud of yourself. Onwards and up / downwards!

JB30 · 26/07/2013 14:41

On my way home now although it'll be probably close to 7 by the time I get there. FD is going ok, had light'ish lunch although did have some rice so it's definitely going to be a mini FD by the time I have dinner although I've decided no Friday night drinkies - been so bad over hols, clawing back some of the damage done

chirpchirp · 26/07/2013 14:41

Thanks Dotty. Yes! Hopefully downwards.

JB30 · 26/07/2013 14:42

Weill done Chirp! You must be thrilled. I know what you mean Betsy, youth is wasted on the young Wink

Tommy · 26/07/2013 14:45

would appreciate some advice - have been doing this for about 7 weeks and lost 8lb which I'm quite happy with and feel is probably a good way of doing it. Trouble is, this week I didn't lose and I feel irrationally cross and feel like chucking it all in Confused

it's just about the motivation is't it? where can I find some?!

Talkinpeace · 26/07/2013 14:59

Tommy Hang on in there.
Weight fluctuates. So weight loss will go in fits and starts. Please do not expect the graph to be a straight line.
Also remember that 5:2 is for far bigger health reasons than just weight loss ... those of us with no more weight to lose still do it because its good for your whole body.
Make sure you keep your fluids up, try to up your exercise, make sure you are getting plenty of veg and your body will suddenly decide to raid the fat stores and they will go away.
AND having done fasts, you are improving your blood chemistry every day.

Thalia
I'm still not clear what you are drinking during the day : you need to keep your fluids up, and caffeine is indeed great to suppress appetite

MelanieCheeks · 26/07/2013 15:04

Great going chirp!

Tommy, this is a long-term approach. It's pointless worrying about what happened in one arbitrary 7 day period. 8 lbs in 7 weeks is excellent!

The Target Dress will be available for collection tomorrow at the Jaegar shop - I've stalked it for months. Saw it on the Style and Beauty section here about 2 months ago and thought it was gorjus but too spendy at £175. Then it was reduced to £99 in John Lewis sale. And finally now down to £75 -but only in an 8. Last dresses I bought from there were 10s. The 8s fitted - just - but the button-up fronts were a little taut, or the sleeves were too tight.

NotAsTired · 26/07/2013 15:28

Thalia. Would it be helpful for us to look at your mfp food/exercise log to get an idea of what's happening? Only if you want to, of course. Smile

postmanpatscat · 26/07/2013 16:03

Well done chirp and trucks - great losses!

Lizzabadger · 26/07/2013 16:21

Thanks Betsy. I don't think it's my perception, unfortunately. I'm still a size 14 Sad. I would really like to get back to my normal (till recent exam eating) size 10-12. I'm confident I will.

Well done Chirp and Trucks!

Thalia I am 44 and perimenopausal too. I think there is a degree of measurement error when we weigh ourselves (due to food in body etc.) that can mask real changes. For example I appear to have plateaued for a week in terms of the scales but I know I can't have, as I took in 8000 calories less than I needed. I expect this will show up in the next weigh-in or two. Maybe try taking waist/boobs/hips measurements as well as weight so there's more chance you will capture any losses?

chirpchirp · 26/07/2013 16:33

Do you have a link to Target Dress Melanie? Purely on a being a nosey cow basis?!

I have one I picked up in the Monsoon sale roughly four years ago and have never fitted in it. I've thought about selling it a few times but it's really beautiful and I REALLY want to wear it one day. It's a size 12 but Monsoon tend to be pretty generous so more like a small 14. Perhaps I'll aim to wear it for my anniversary next April.
