Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread Number 24 - Summer's still here so skip the snack and share the meal!

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well done ladies fasting! I have survived a day at the seaside with half portion of chips! tip what does your husband do? only asking as I noticed a earlier post mentioning something)

chirpchirp · 27/07/2013 00:09

Lovely dress Melanie!

FD success even with a trip to the cinema. Looking forward to my porridge in the morning.

ELR · 27/07/2013 07:54

Morning everyone, been up since 5.11am!! Goodness knows why as it was a nfd yesterday but I did eat around 5.30pm with nothing else so maybe that's why.
Love the dress mel.
bshh well done on getting to the end of a fast day in the holidays! I managed Monday but Thursday was a wash out, had around 1100 cal so a mini fast & 16/8 I suppose.
Well done chirp and delilah cinema and seaside with very good self control!!
Happy fasting everyone, have a good weekend!

JB30 · 27/07/2013 08:20

Morning all. Managed a mini fast of about 900 cals. Caved a little, had some beer but only half a bottle - miraculous for a Friday, that's my normal night to break out. I am going to wait til Wednesday to WI again as my weight is up/down after my holiday so that gives a week to get a true picture of what 10 days piggery did! I've done 3 days of 16:8 with no brekkie but I think this morning I'm going to have something, eggy something I think. Awake since 6.15, ironing done, first load of washing done, back to reality!

Dotty342kids · 27/07/2013 09:01

tip that's a really interesting concept about the water. I only ever drink water (always been like that) and find the idea of going a couple of hours without any really weird! Surely your body doesn't actually "digest" water in the same way as other foods / calorific liquids? I know I'd actually feel thirsty if I didn't drink for that long, no matter how large a glass I'd had two hours ago.......... do you have any further reading on this that I could take a look at? I'm intrigued Smile

monster54 · 27/07/2013 09:09

3 successful fasts done this week. Shredded for the first time yesterday and loved it!!!

1lb down 5 more to mini goal!!!

BsshBossh · 27/07/2013 09:12

TiP I'm intrigued by the water theory too. I've Googled around and Mayo clinic states the "myth" that water dilutes stomach enzymes thereby interfering with digestion has been debunked by new research. But you may be talking about something else...

thaliablogs · 27/07/2013 09:14

dotty I am with you. Also, I have found sipping from a big glass of fizzy water with lots of ice and a slice of lemon is one of the only ways I ca get through a FD, otherwise I am ll headachy and ragey.

When I was having all my ops for various infertility issues the very nice anaesthetist told me quietly I could ignore the nil by mouth for water as it is out of your stomach again in under 20 minutes so she said I could sip all morning until 30 mins before I went down to avoid cotton wool mouth. I'm sure that is desperately illegal but it worked for me and helped me feel much less sick when I woke up. S I honestly can't see how drinking water is going to make your body feel it is digesting anything. Plus given it has got no calories would this not help your metabolism? Confused

monster54 · 27/07/2013 09:32

I think tip has been confusing her water with vodka!!!

NotAsTired · 27/07/2013 10:05

I have woken up feeling really lethargic, probably an overdose of carbs yesterday eve. Chips followed by cereal for dinnerBlush. Ah well. It's not like it happens everyday.

So this evening is the big gala event of the year for our community. It's a great chance to catch up with everyone. I am really looking forward to it. Dress all lined up. Despite saying to bsshbosh to wear more colour, its a black dress Grin. Got to sort out hair and nails and er, defuzzing.

Talkinpeace · 27/07/2013 10:38

Its not water per se but all fluids. Look up about dealing with dehydration - which is of course the problem on fast days.
All the advice is that a single large drink is better than lots of small ones.
For the dieting thing its about telling your body to go into "deal with what you have, no more coming yet" mode.

After all a few months ago most of you were convined you could not go two hours without food Grin

Dotty342kids · 27/07/2013 10:58

I knew you'd compare it to the "going without food" thing tip Grin.
I may try it on Monday (fast day) and see what happens!

postmanpatscat · 27/07/2013 11:03

Sounds like we've all been awake for hours! I was tossing and turning on my caravan bed, DP hardly slept either. It just can't compete with our kingsize memory foam at home!

Just back from a run around the Bognor suburbs, it's beautiful here.

Anyone fasting today?

tired have a lovely time tonight, bet you will get lots of compliments :)

EagleRiderDirk · 27/07/2013 11:03

tip can't possibly be talking about vodka or she's advocating drinking large ones in the day Shock

plecofjustice · 27/07/2013 11:18

SSV (semi scales victory) today. Securely in the healthy BMI category (24.7) this morning! 8.6 kilos lost since I started :)

carmella1986 · 27/07/2013 11:21

This Diet is the worst diet in the WORLD for you to do. Yes its a quick way to loose pounds, you will only stay that way if you do it forever! As soon as you stop, you will pile the pounds back on, probably more than before as you are putting your body into starvation mode, anything you do eat will then be stored as fat. Its a quick fix but if you are looking to shed pounds quickly and keep it off choose the CLEAN and LEAN diet. Its brilliant and sustainable, on this diet you will loose 2lb per week steadily and you are not putting you body through the horrors of not eating then eating then not...etc etc. Its so bad for you.
QUICK FIX DIETS DO NOT WORK.
There are two clean and lean books out, read through them. There are recipes etc available from tesco i think its £7.99.
This is what i recommend, i am a nutritionist so understand these diets!
The other diet if you really are a hardcore dieter is the Paleo diet. This is a brilliant diet for loosing weight steadily and if you can maintain it then its brilliant and very healthy, but its cutting out wheat and dairy, which not many people (including myself) can do!!

Talkinpeace · 27/07/2013 11:28

Carmella, I'm not trying to lose weight. I'm trying to reduce my long term risks of Diabetes, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimers and endocrine diseases.
IF is a long accepted medical method of dealing with them.
You need to read more medical papers and less books from Tesco.

postmanpatscat · 27/07/2013 11:29

carmella that's rubbish! Plenty of us have lost weight and kept it off. I won't bore you with statistics since I doubt you're truly interested Hmm

postmanpatscat · 27/07/2013 11:31

Well done plecofjustice really pleased for you (and more proof that 5:2 works!)

Talkinpeace · 27/07/2013 11:32

Plec Well done. That is an excellent line to have crossed.

BTW I drink a huge mug of tea or water every 1 1/2 hours and nothing in between.
I do not drink during swims or gym classes
but then have a full pint of water before eating (old WW trick)

EagleRiderDirk · 27/07/2013 12:33

24 threads in and someone thinks we may not know what we're doing Hmm

NEWSFLASH: when you stop dieting you gain weight back if you revert back to your old weight gaining eating habits Shock

EagleRiderDirk · 27/07/2013 12:33

and well done plec

that's a definite sv, not even an ssv!

thaliablogs · 27/07/2013 13:04

plec I remember crossing that line on my big 3st journey 9 years ago - it's a wonderful day when that happens - congrats!

carmella the science behind clean and lean is just as open to interpretation as that for 5:2. It also involves calorie restriction which is the only proven way to lose weight, you are just restricting in a different way. The detox stuff on the clean and lean diet is largely nonsense, your liver is a very powerful detox machine and is not affected by more or less water, wheat and dairy, etc.. The stuff about many of us eating too much sugar is true. Too much simple carbs also true. They are also very calorie dense. But unless you are a diabetic they are not poison, and unless you have coeliac disease, neither is wheat.

Paleo, by the way, is even more scientific tosh in that it bears no resemblance to what our ancestors ate. It is a low-gi, low carb diet so if that works for you, fine, but the pseudo science of calling it paleo is really ridiculous.

Main issue for all of us is to eat a healthy mix of foods in amounts that our bodies need. And to exercise to keep our muscles working well as we age. Whatever helps you do that is a good thing.

thaliablogs · 27/07/2013 13:07

tip am sticking to your method today will see what happens! Cup of black coffee 830-915 (I needed to savour it), cup if green tea at 1030 and another at 1230. No food yet, about to make a romaine and quails egg salad for lunch.

Clearing out the house today, it's a seemingly Herculean task.

silverbeetle · 27/07/2013 13:11

Yay Plec good for you Smile

Never thought this was a quick fix 'diet' Carmella, I don't even think of it as a diet, it's a life time change of eating habits. I think that's why it works as you don't feel deprived, it's a mental change. You don't think 'oh I can't have that I'm on a diet', you think more 'actually I don't want that today as I'm fasting and giving my body a rest, I can have it tomorrow if I still really want it'.
I feel great, look much better and am much healthier, my very high blood pressure is now back to normal without the need for medication. I'm not overweight anymore but continue with this WOL because it makes me feel healthier and it doesn't cost me a penny.

I studied the sciences for many years and I have to say it all makes sense to me. The proofs in the pudding, still everyone's entitled to their own opinion.
