IF, 4:3, 5:2 - Maintaining a healthy weight - Chapter 3

Talkinpeace · 19/07/2013 13:03

This thread is for those who have been practicing IF (Intermittent Fasting) for quite a while and are now at, or nearing, their target healthy weight.
It's also for anyone who is doing it for the health benefits alone.

How do we experience fasts and balance a stable food intake while having little or no weight to lose?
How do we ensure that this WOL keeps us at the healthy weight long term rather than revert to yoyo games?
How do we ensure that we keep ourselves looking great rather than just thin?

Many of us have been maintaining at our original goal weight for a few months, and others are joining all the time.
Obviously, the more the merrier!
It is also worth considering whether a second, leaner target might be achievable.

You'll find the first two maintenance threads and all the main 5:2 threads for posters practicing IF to lose weight here on the Fasting / 5:2 on the diet forum. We're currently on thread no. 23, but there is a new main thread every 2-3 weeks.

There are two other associated threads:
This one, which is an absolute goldmine of Tips and Links on how to practice IF, and the research behind it.

And here is a treasure trove of 5:2 recipes, mostly low calorie for fasting days, but there are also recipes for when you want to treat yourself. And, now we're maintaining, we'll need more of these!

PS thanks to Breadandwine (proof that this forum welcomes everybody, not just Mums) for setting up the last thread while my old name that set up the first one was on 'holiday' Grin

slob Tip? I thought the purple jeans were very cool..

TalkinPeace · 13/01/2014 18:41

Laska
purple jeans currently covered in cat hair as my cat is in lap mode!

Yup, I'll get a new thread ready

main thread skirmishes : we don't get many of them but yes, people who think that you start with 4 fasts a week need slapping down before they rant about 5:2 not working

OP posts:
CuckooAtchooUhOh · 13/01/2014 19:27

Thanks SouthEast Thanks

I do love to pass on support to the newbies whenever poss as it is all part of the pay it forward thing Grin Wouldn't have/want/do it any other way.

But sometimes it is harder to read people and their angle. And this past week with it building and building I have got so lost!
I haven't been feeling quite myself yet post Xmas anyway, combined with a bit of lurgy, just finding it hard to know my arse from my elbow! I know it sounds daft but my ears have gone, and I swear my brain has been affected!

Anyway, just read some posts and think I'm either reading it the wrong way, or some people are just bloody rude!! Never understand why we have to do all this chest beating, and 'my nose is put out of joint because you misunderstood me'. It's the fecking internet! It might happen occasionally, get over yourselves, life's too bloody short. Really!!

Generalised rant - (not exclusive to internet)...
Cba with those always looking for a fight types! Why don't we all just get our genitals out and compare now! (or does that not work with women??) ... [ponders the female equivalent]

Rant over!

So for fear that one of my filters doesn't kick in on time, I am happy to sit back (ish) Grin for a bit. Until I'm running at full, filtered strength again!

Thankfully - YOU LOT are all luvvly! [heart]

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 13/01/2014 19:40

people who blindly ignore any of the basics and start whining after half a day that they haven't lost weight or blatantly know zilch about how 5:2 works, expect us to fill them in, then moan about everything as if we are making them do it against their will, need slapping

oh and yes you are feeling fecking hungry - BECAUSE YOU HAVEN'T EATEN FOR A WHILE - that'll happen. Do you want to lose weight? Then get on with it. If not shut up and go back to your pie and crisps.

Ladies and gentlemen we may well be experiencing some turbulence, this is largely due to blocked ears and some minor hormone disruptions! Normal service will resume shortly. Please ignore the ranting, hysterical woman with cotton wool in her ears! Wink

BetsyBell · 13/01/2014 19:46

Talking of skirmishes, there's an comment on the tips thread, should anyone want to get stuck in... sigh

Fast was alright today, not one of the best. Don't feel like I've eaten a very small amount though. I've agreed to a higher workload this term and I'm not sure it was a good idea - feel like I'm waiting for the extreme exhaustion to kick in any second. Silly really as I'm actually currently tired from having a fun weekend, but it's difficult feeling like I'm playing sleep catchup on a Monday. Sorry - that was a bit stream-of-consciousness but I'm just trying to work out what this edge of anxiousness I'm feeling is.

Ah, stuff it, I'll knock it all out of my system at Taekwondo tomorrow Grin.

BetsyBell · 13/01/2014 19:48

cuckoo Grin - I know exactly what you're saying. Hence the leetle step back.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 13/01/2014 19:50

Should probably add in the interests of fairness and potential nose out jointing, that the above is a build up of some negative comments read over months on various 5:2 threads, not the main one in particular! If at all.

Oops! Must stop pedaling, we're picking up speed! Grin

TalkinPeace · 13/01/2014 19:51

betsy ah yes, that person.

Coming in with my tin hat! Fasting going well, did a 5 mile run fasted, last meal yesterday dinner, can't do without my coffee in the morning, so had that and just drank water during the day. Hubby cooks on the week days as he works nights, and I get home a little too late for cooking from scratch, so I cook at weekends, tonight is fish (red snapper) with cabbage, broccoli, can't wait. Don't yet know names, but thank for all the great inspirational posts.

p.s how do you post smileys, I'm on iPad air, keep pressing the smiley I want to add, but it's not registering. thanks!

BetsyBell · 13/01/2014 19:53

Sorry? Did someone order a thread to be filled up? Betsy & Cuckoo are the women for the job apparently.

Reminder to self: less screen time...

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 13/01/2014 19:54

teeny tiny pedal....

Betsy - feeling crap aside, you are one of my big inspirations of year so far. I really admire how you're just cracking on with exercise. All sounds very impressive and energetic! I am stuck with a severe case of SAD here I think! My solar powered engines have pretty much ground to halt! Did some hooping today though - feeling fit! Wink

BetsyBell · 13/01/2014 19:59

Aw shucks cuckoo Blush - get yourself better, then you'll feel like getting stuck in yourself. Virally bugs are highly demotivating - especially if it's just low level stuff. BUT, one morning you're going to wake up, realise it's all cleared up, marvel at how fab you suddenly feel and shake (hoop) out those cobwebs. Then they'll be no stopping you xxx

TalkinPeace · 13/01/2014 20:00

Hi there lucian - I'm too tight to own an ipad - the code is down the screen .....
THat recipe sounds good - pop it on the main thread to give some of the other new starters excellent ideas Smile

OP posts:
BsshBossh · 13/01/2014 20:06

I read that one of those SAD lamps/light boxes help sufferers cuckoo. Do you have one?

FD very successful today. Monday fasts (post-weekend indulgence) always breeze by for me compared with Thursday fasts. Have been LOFing all day and will break fast in an hour with soup and a slice of thinly buttered wholemeal bread. Then 2 NFDs. Am having lunch at my mum's tomorrow as she's made one of my favourite childhood curries - liver curry!

EarSlaps · 13/01/2014 20:12

Cuckoo- thinking re SAD, low level bug etc, sounds like you might need a bit of vitamin D maybe? Your stocks might be running low as we get into winter. Can you try eating something rich in vitamin D or trying a supplement. Bugger all chance of getting any from the weak sunshine at this time of year, even if you frolic outside naked in the middle of the day.

EarSlaps · 13/01/2014 20:14

Bssh, your food talk normally gets my mouth watering, but liver curry? Really? Don't think I could fancy that!

BsshBossh · 13/01/2014 20:24

Grin Yes, I guess it doesn't sound so good Grin.

TalkinPeace · 13/01/2014 20:25

Seasonal depression - various friends at my gym have cured theirs by swimming outdoors year round .....

Liver curry : OK, I must be weird, that sounds wonderful .... with lots of spinach?

OP posts:
EarSlaps · 13/01/2014 20:28

Tip- are you anaemic? The only reason I can imagine that sounding nice is if your body is crying out for iron. I do love spinach though.

BsshBossh · 13/01/2014 20:29

Yep, with spinach, potatoes, the usual spices (cumin, coriander, garam masala, touch of chilli), onions, garlic, ginger. She usually makes it with lambs liver but she's trying it with chicken liver for the first time. I was one of those strange kids who always chose liver and bacon for school lunches.

EarSlaps · 13/01/2014 20:31

Then again, I happily eat platefuls of black pudding, so perhaps I need iron too Smile.

TalkinPeace · 13/01/2014 20:41

I'm not aware of being anaemic. But yes, black pudding and poached eggs is my ideal sunday breakfast (DH is an excellent short order cook)

OP posts:
frenchfancy · 13/01/2014 20:41

I'll leave the liver curry alone if you don't mind, but I love a bit of black pudding.

My cheese omelette was very nice. 3eggs and 50g of cheese is nicely filling.

Anglaise1 · 13/01/2014 20:53

Liver curry no thanks Shock. Glad fast day is over, Veg chilli for supper, 2 clementines and a little chocolate. Did a 10k run, 5k dog walk my feet are freezing and I'm looking forward to breakfast tomorrow.
I know I probably won't lose weight this week as when I originally did diet after 1,5kgs lost the first week lost nothing for the next 3. It isn't a quick fix (as most new 5:2 ers are probably finding out in the main thread!).

Laska42 · 13/01/2014 20:57

oh sod...who left that bottle of dry Manzanilla in the fridge? and who made that yummy paratha dough just waiting to be griddled?

I rather like the sound of liver curry actually, bssh can we have the recipe? I often go for the lover and bacon (in fact that what I had when i had lunch with tip

Madhur Jaffrey does a great beetroot curry.. I love it (though it makes your rice go an alarming bright pink..

Btw Tip think i've got a Southampton meeting next week if you are around ?.. Tuesday i think .. ( also just got in first on chap 4!! Grin)

Hints and tips troll? I can see one deleted , that them? ..
so much for less screen time.. though i have been off doing chores washing up , and having a naughty slurp as above
