Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread Number 23: Summer's really here - time to melt off those extra pounds!

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I weighed myself this morning, 10 days after first logging weight in MFP.
Have had 2 fast days (started properly last Monday but had weighted myself Thurs before) and really concentrating on not snacking

I've lost 6 lbs and 1 inch off my waist!

I'm actually amazed...it felt so painless, I can't believe that's all there is to it!
And I haven't even done my planned skimming because DH has been away with work

Hols in 3 weeks - feeling excited about what can happen before then!

So, anyone who is wondering whether this works or it's just another fad... It really does

Going to have to resist celebrating with too much WineWineWine!

HomeEcoGnomist · 13/07/2013 12:43

*swimming...although if skimming counts as exercise, I'd be interested to know!

postmanpatscat · 13/07/2013 13:32

well done home you're off to a great start! (see, we told you it was easy!)

JB30 · 13/07/2013 13:46

No many sausage for me Pep and no mad creamy sugary cakes. One thing that might help, we are going to a hotel so not I'll be buying groceries, aka crisps/chocolate. Might help curb the snacking? Would live to aim for 16:8 every second day, go do a run while breakfast is on, paint nails/pamper/swim - I think that might work well. Distraction works good for me, hotel had lots of activities and I could try be the one to join in with the kids instead of dh. Best made plans...in airport with Wine Grin

JB30 · 13/07/2013 13:47

Wow post above sounds like Wine is getting to me already! Hopefully it can be roughly understood!

BetsyBell · 13/07/2013 13:50

I appear to be having a bit of a fast today... massively over did it last night with the pink fizz and am only just coming round to the idea of food as a possibility. [blee]

Silly Betsy.

Hi, I'm a bit late to the party but I've been inspired by you lot and I'm starting on Mon.

I have a horrifying 4 stone to lose before my BMI is back in the healthy zone- I suspect a diet of chocolate digestives, cheese and wine has taken it's toll on my poor body.

My DS is 18 months old and I'm still clinging on to 10 pounds of baby weight Hmm.

Mon is my first fast day, and frankly I'm terrified of being starving hungry all day. Two books have arrived today with lots of recipes and tips. Help!

mttum · 13/07/2013 15:06

NSV! I can tuck my t shirt into my trousers without looking totally gross Grin

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 13/07/2013 15:28

Wah-hey everyone with inspiring victories!

Is anyone combining a low ish carb WOE on NF days?
I have found low carb/primal has always worked best for me in the past and Dr John Briffa (and others) suggest fasting is much easier when your body is already adapted to eating low carb.

Today is a NFD and I have had a few raw almonds at dawn to see me through the first BF of the day followed by 2 scrambled eggs in butter and smoked salmon at 9am; was lovely.

Lunch is seaweed salad, chopped chicken breast, shrimp and bean sprouts.

Dinner will be beef and lentil bolognaise and DH will have it with pasta, I won't bother.

And some nice wine ;)

Breadandwine · 13/07/2013 15:53

macca the first day can be difficult - but it does get easier.

And it works! Smile

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 13/07/2013 16:28

Thank you. I still can't work out whether to have breakfast or not? Is it better to save myself til lunch?

HomeEcoGnomist · 13/07/2013 17:03

Macca - from what I have picked up here, and my personal prefsm, I have found it relatively easy to miss breakfast, drink peppermint tea through the morning and get to 2 pm if poss before eating lunch.

MelanieCheeks · 13/07/2013 17:05

For the first few fasts, I allowed myself breakfast lunch and dinner. Then I made the lunch lighter and lighter. Then I skipped breakfasts.

vieenrose · 13/07/2013 17:30

Macca
Like a lot of fasters who have been doing this a while, I find it easier to save all my calories (save milk in tea) for my evening meal. Then I can have a satisfying dinner and go to bed on a full stomach.
During the day, I drink lots and lost of water, herbal teas, coffee etc...and try to keep busy. And after a while, you get used to it I promise.

EagleRiderDirk · 13/07/2013 19:07

dress shopping today - woohoo. 2 size 14s, one medium and one large. and guess which one didn't fit when I got home? yup, the large (which was from the same shop as the medium!) was too small for me Hmm

anyway still please with my haul.

accidentally skipped lunch so have some wine and Pimms awaiting. would be rude not too.

keep going all my fellow losers

akarucker · 13/07/2013 19:17

Feeling mighty chuffed that I managed a FD today. It was hot, there was Pimms everywhere, cakes at fetes, BBQ smells, and a chilled bottle of white in the fridge. I can have it tomorrow!! Oh, and I will mfp it when I do have it tomorrow!

Talkinpeace · 13/07/2013 21:06

(((ERD))) Size 14 : you star and you know that in 6 months it'll be sizes smaller

((Aka))) thats the way to do it

welcome, welcome newcomers
yes, the trick on fasting is to sleep well
that means NOT going to bed on an empty stomach
that means skip early meals

interesting point .....
do you remember the telly programme "worst jobs in the world" and the bin man in Indonesia
they had a snack at the start of the day , nothing in the middle of the day and then ate all they they could afford before going to sleep

I suspect that is the way we evolved to eat - it makes utter sense

headintheclouds · 13/07/2013 21:34

Hello everyone,
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who responded to my post yesterday.. I'm going to take a little bit of all advice given..
Eat a bit more on NFDs, stop trying so hard..exercise more on FDs etc .
Off on my holiday in 4 more weeks and I think that's why I was trying so hard..When I started this in Jan I really wanted to have a BMI of 23 by my holiday.. ( which would put me about 9st 6).. Maybe I'll be there by next years holiday Grin and it's not a race is it? Onwards & downwards

peplum41 · 13/07/2013 21:49

maccapacca

Report for duty on Monday morning before breakfast, Brew in hand.

You will then not require breakfast.

Debriefing will inspire you to keep going. I recommend no more than one Wine the previous eve.

Its great, don't be nervous. Grin

Talkinpeace · 13/07/2013 21:55

peplum
you are daft as a brush

peplum41 · 13/07/2013 22:01

aka the queen of resistance.

erd I bet that shop those dresses originally came from is M&S! Their sizes have no consistency at all! Size 14, and the smallest one too. Fabbo!

betsy I can no longer touch Rose wine due to an overindulgence several years ago. It was blee all day.

headinclouds Smile hols soon, will do you good.

Well done on successful fasts, NFDs and NSVs. Off to nurse my sunburn after a nice day on the Fylde coast. Attempting fast tomorrow. Gulp.

peplum41 · 13/07/2013 22:11

Talkin sad but true. How was your good self after the Ouzo this morning? Wink

Southeastdweller · 13/07/2013 22:56

Welcome macca Just saying pretty much what the others have said - stay busy, plan your meals and zero cal drinks, and eat a full meal the night before. Also avoid high carb foods. Many of us were scared just before we started (natural considering the conditioning we've had for years about having to have three meals a day every day otherwise something very bad will happen). And remember that you can have it tomorrow.

Let us know how you get on tomorrow pep Smile

FD almost done and dusted now which was totally fine as I don't feel like eating much in this hot weather. But I had a random craving for fizzy sweets - went into Tesco and bought a small pack of pre-sliced apple instead. Going to attempt an early night now as no doubt my twuntingly feral neighbours will have me up at 7am Angry.

ELR · 14/07/2013 06:53

Morning all, up bright and early due to a night of pimms and homemade pizza, didn't over do it but still feeling a bit uuurrggg from all the pizza carbs and sugary pimms! Wondering whether to fast, 16:8, low carb or mini fast today?? I usually fast Monday and prob still will but just fancied something today as feeling a little rough.
Anyone fasting today?

EagleRiderDirk · 14/07/2013 07:15

elr I thought I'd posted that with no memory lol. homemeade pizza and Pimms it was for me too last night. am off to my mums for an incredibly seasonally inappropriate roast so just 16:8 for me today.

tip and peplum thank you. it wasn't m&s surprisingly though it was a pair of their size 20 jeans no longer fitting me that made me start this journey (when another pair were just fine Hmm ). a shop called forever 21, made me feel all young Wink
