Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 22! Put down that biscuit - you can eat it tomorrow

BetsyBell · 23/06/2013 15:54

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads:
most recent, one before that, another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnichts for putting together all the info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

gilbertus
have plenty of fluids - possibly make yourself some miso soup - as the warmth and flavours will trick your system into thinking its had calories
BUT
the slightly hollow feeling is hunger - its healthy - it will pass after a while

EagleRiderDirk · 08/07/2013 12:05

Welcome gilbertus

Don't worry baby - my BMI is only just under 28 now and that's after losing 3 stone.

MelanieCheeks · 08/07/2013 12:09

Had a bit of a break there whilst on hols, but hoping to get back in teh groove this week!

Miso soup time, surely.

babysaurus · 08/07/2013 12:22

Miso soup time DEFINATELY.
After all, its just the weather for soup...

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 08/07/2013 12:27

Not posted before but I am on fast day number 3, have been hungry and grumpy each time which is quite tough. It's hard resisting DS's lunch!

However I have lost 6lb so far which is spurring me on. I have about 5.5 stone to lose now to get to BMI 25 Blush

mumofcrazynamedkids · 08/07/2013 13:02

afternoon all, fast day for me, just caught up with everyones posts after a long weekend away, but at work so no time to respond, this board really does move super fast.

weighed before fast and after a 4 day NFD window, and weigh 11 02 which is same as after my first fast day back on track last week, so be interesting to see what it'll be tomorrow after a fast, I'm hoping for 11, I'll report back tomorrow.

wanted to say a big whoop whoop to Aftereights so pleased your losses continued so successfully as remember you from the beginnning, hope to see you over on maintainers when I get back on there soon

I've done really well at not snacking as much this weekend though, and mostly ice pops and popcorn as it was TOTM too.

still not feeling hungry although chilly in my super air con'd office. might need to step out to pick up something for supper and warm up in the sunshine!

also working harder at not breakfasting even on NFD's.

welcome to all the newbies and lurkers, and congrats to everyone for losing.

wanted to say too that I have alwasy been plagued by plateau's and just managed to keep my head in a good place by working out that on average I lost a pound a week while 5:2 ing, and I could eat cake/chocolate/cheese/cream/bread on NFD's - really is the best WOE!

Emilythornesbff · 08/07/2013 13:15

Welcome beachcomber and gilbertus

Decided to fast today and Wednesday.
No breakfast or snacks on weekdays.

Gilbertus · 08/07/2013 13:53

Just had a salad of chopped lettuce, cucumber, pepper, green beans and a hardboiled egg. Now having miss soup. Can't be that many calories?

mumofcrazynamedkids · 08/07/2013 13:53

aagghhh cross at myself, went out and bought a small pack of ham (21 cals per slice, 4 slices in pack) and then ate them, sitting in sunshine while not at all hungry why? why did I eat when not hungry, you'd think after almost 11 months of this I would know better? why waste any calories when i wasn't even hungry? ah well, only 84 of my days allowance, and hopefully the protein should keep me not hungry for longer.

just wish despite the not hungry feelings I could say goodbye to the feelings of desire/temptation I have every time i walk past the shortbread fingers in the work biscuit box....grrrrrr

Gilbertus · 08/07/2013 13:53

*miso

mumofcrazynamedkids · 08/07/2013 13:54

gilbertus any dressing on the salad?

Gilbertus · 08/07/2013 13:59

No. But I feel quite full now... Not sure if I am supposed to...

Cat98 · 08/07/2013 14:08

Welcome new people and well done to today's fasters and losers! Chin up to the person who has plateaued (sorry I can't see username) - you've had some good advice to mix it up a bit, hang in there...

I'm fasting today, I did nibble on the end of a baguette earlier after cutting it off to make tomorrows lunch - feel a bit annoyed with myself as that wasnt on my plan today!
Will just take a few cals off my dinner allowance. I'm trying a fast day recipe tonight, Sri Lankan chicken curry with a spoon or 2 of brown rice. I'm experimenting a lot more with Meals now on fast days - there are loads of great recipes on the blogs aren't there!

Dotty342kids · 08/07/2013 14:22

Very excited to announce that today I tried on, fitted into, and looked quite good in....... A pair of size 12 skinny jeans!!!! Victory on several levels as have not squeezed into size 12 trousers for quite some time plus have always looked dreadful in skinnies on account of my rather fat knees and thighs. Clearly they're nit quite as fat as they.used to be Grin
Welcome to all newbies btw.

EagleRiderDirk · 08/07/2013 14:51

nice nsv dotty

AmericasTorturedBrow · 08/07/2013 15:31

Well done Dotty, NSV s are great - I found when I upped exercise I stopped losing weight so it was reassuring to see I was still getting smaller by dress size although those fab clothes are now too tight

WI showed 2lb loss this week, yay! Exactly the boost I needed to get back on track. Back to Shred every day, power yoga tonight, swimming Thursday and a bike ride on Saturday - I've already signed up to do the same mammoth charity bike ride next year and am desperate to get out on my bike again!

Fasting today, weds and fri. Have to admit I always have milk in my drinks, can't have tea without, but since switching to almond milk in my several cups of coffee at least the calorie damage isn't so bad

BsshBossh · 08/07/2013 15:38

Great loss Americas and fantastic NSV Dotty!

Fasting going well for me, despite being a little stressed out by being at the beck and call of a poorly 5yo DD. It's the heat over the weekend. A few other children in her class are poorly due to the heat.

ollieboo · 08/07/2013 15:47

I'm totally new to this forum & WOE, wondered if anyone can answer something that's bugging me.
I'm going into my 4th week this WOE now and have been doing 2 or 3 FDs a week, depending on circumstances. I've lost 5lbs so far, which I'm pretty pleased with as I've had quite a few pig-out NFDs. I'm currently at 10st 7lbs, but want to get back to around 9st - I used to weigh this until last year when I had hip surgery and gained loads.
Anyway, my question is can I really eat carbs on my NFDs and still lose weight? Prior to getting sick last year, I followed a strict low carb diet to maintain weight and gained weight when I stopped this.
I'm doing well so far but can't help thinking that if I dropped the carbs I'd lose more. I'm being fairly sensible and eating small portions of 'good' carbs on NFDs like spelt, rice and new potatoes, with some low fat chips sometimes. Any thoughts much appreciated. My DH says I should stick to what I'm doing as going low carb is just mixing two WOE but old habits die hard I guess and I'm struggling.
Sorry for long first post but would appreciate any advice

mumofcrazynamedkids · 08/07/2013 16:01

olllieboo welcome and well done on your loss so far. I think generally we all know that simple and processed carbs are not great for us, but smaller amounts of those for pleasure, mixed with some complex and good carbs are good for an all round balanced WOE and not feeling like we are livinga restricted WOE, i think the downfalls many of us have experienced before is that we strick to restrictive WOE's/diets such as low carb, but we cannot maintain once we stop the restrictions, and hence yoyo, this WOE allows us to at some of all that we want to eat, healthy and unhealthy, but the restricted calory days re-balances things as well as offering other health benefits.

try and trust and let go of old diets rules!

EagleRiderDirk · 08/07/2013 16:04

ollie completely agree with mum there. Also, if you count on your NFDs to (which some of us do) you'll probably find yourself doing a natural bit of carb avoidance anyway, as the bad ones also tend to be laden with calories! I personally wouldn't cut them out if you like them.

Talkinpeace · 08/07/2013 16:05

ollieboo
welcome aboard
Yes, you can eat any food that takes your fancy, just so long as you stay within your TDEE

Cheese sandwich on white bread with a bit of branston followed by a cake - perfectly allowed Grin

or garlic bread and pasta

or fish and chips from the chippie

all allowed, just in moderation

PS lots of people combine 5:2 with other diets - do what works for you and enjoy

mumofcrazynamedkids · 08/07/2013 16:06

oops sorry for typo's and spelling mistakes, hope you get the gist!

ollieboo · 08/07/2013 16:11

Thanks. I think I just remember how quick it was to lose weight on the old low carb regime and get a bit disheartened at how slowly it seems to be happening now.
But as mum quite rightly says I did yoyo terribly on that diet and felt deprived all the time.
Will just keep on and see how I get on.

TonytheFish · 08/07/2013 16:11

Hey all, been a bit busy as we moved a cpl weeks ago.

Anyway, just over a month in and I have lost 11lbs!!

Very bad week last week, as I was pre-menstrual and was so hungry! I really struggled to fast, I would get to lunch time and just eat and eat! But ah well. Back to normal this week and fasting today.

Itsaboatjack · 08/07/2013 16:52

Hello all, and welcome newbies. Great to see so many losses and good NSVs.

I drank too much wine yesterday and so not it mood for fasting today so I am doing a low carb 16:8 and will fast tomorrow and Thursday instead.

I had half an NSV at the weekend while mooching round the Debenhams sale. I was looking for a nice dress for my hols, I found one I liked but they only had a size 10 left, I am still a size 12 but I thought I'd try it. Couldn't do it all the way up round my chest but it fit nicely over my bum and hips, so half way there.
