Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 22! Put down that biscuit - you can eat it tomorrow

BetsyBell · 23/06/2013 15:54

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads:
most recent, one before that, another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnichts for putting together all the info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I started 5:2 last Thursday. I was almost 9 stone and have lost 2lbs this week. I would like to get to 8 stone and be able to make full use of all the clothes in my wardrobe!

BsshBossh · 06/07/2013 07:43

Weekly weigh-in. 2.2 lbs down :) Happy with this 'cause no exercise this week and "only" 1.5 fasts. The no snacking definitely contributed to the loss.

EagleRiderDirk · 06/07/2013 08:20

Well done bssh and bombay

I completed my first ever no food fast. Sadly I was well over 500 calories in wine. Currently feeling disgusting. In good news though I've now hit 3 stone weight loss and am in the 11s ( 11st 13lb and 3/4, though my scale can go to 7/8 so I am lower than as close as I can be Grin)

SoTiredAgain · 06/07/2013 08:28

Well done bombay, bssh for the weight loss, and erd for hitting the 3 stone marker. Smile

gampy good on you for starting 5:2. How have you found it so far? And btw, 8 st is what I am aiming for too.

SoTiredAgain · 06/07/2013 08:31

dotty you're welcome. Smile Glad you enjoyed.

JB30 · 06/07/2013 09:17

Oh dear God, I am dying. It's official, I am a lush. Cocktails played a large part of my night out which followed a day of eating utter junk. My head is thumping and I have a lunch in just over 3 hours, followed by a kids party 2 hours after that.
I am going to have to do a 16:8 but right now I would love some junky white bread slathered in real butter...drool. The only thing that's stopping me is I know it will do me no good. When I am this rough, there is nothing that helps.
At least I enjoyed getting myself in this stateWink

GampyWabbit · 06/07/2013 09:19

Thanks tired. Found it ok so far!

Have been using mfp and that has really helped me to become more aware of what I'm eating and how many calories are in everything!

After dc3 I just haven't had the same drive to get down to original weight and I have definitely not felt as confident recently. I am feel much better already, after just a week. I am pretty active generally, but need to add in some formal exercise this week ( will aim to go for a run today).

Any advice for how to place a 500 cal day in meals would be appreciated!

Dotty342kids · 06/07/2013 09:21

Bssh excellent loss then. I keep thinking about this no snacking milarkey and then finding it too scary. Perhaps I could do no snacking on weekdays to start with?

Southeastdweller · 06/07/2013 09:33

Well done brambles gamby bssh and ERD Smile

Welcome home. I think the biggest thing I can advise for your first FD is to stay busy.

Well I also packed away too much grog and food yesterday and will just be having some fruit and a coffee today. I just know my gym workout will be much harder.

SoTiredAgain · 06/07/2013 09:38

dotty. I was the queen of snacks, eating every two hours or so. Convinced that if I did not eat frequently my blood sugar would spike etc. If I can do it, so can you.

When do you snack? All day or just certain points of the day?

Emilythornesbff · 06/07/2013 09:46

My snacking is almost entirely comfort eating.
Tiredness and the feeling that I need/ deserve / have earned a treat.
I am struggling to address it tbh.
Help!

BsshBossh · 06/07/2013 09:56

GampyWabbit I don't log calories anymore but when I started my weightloss journey I logged in MFP for an entire year (on and off). I found it amazingly instructive as before that I had no idea what "normal" eating and portions looked like. I recommend it to anyone who wants to lose weight. I don't have to log anymore so it doesn't have to be forever!

BsshBossh · 06/07/2013 10:02

Dotty I only do the no snacking thing on weekdays - never on weekends or special days.

BsshBossh · 06/07/2013 10:06

Emily I have treats every day (except for fast days - unless you count a 10 cal jelly as a treat!) but I have them with my meal eg ice cream after dinner, crisps with lunch. That way I still get my 4-to-6 hour gaps between my main meals.

Emilythornesbff · 06/07/2013 10:23

Thanks bshh

Talkinpeace · 06/07/2013 10:24

sotired
my exercise consists of swimming : up to 5 miles a week and then 3 yoga classes and 2 bodybalance and occasionally a bodypump

emily
I agree with Bssh .... make your treat part of a meal, not as well as a meal

snacking is really really bad for you, as is grazing. your digestion NEEDS time to do its job and hoover into the corners

LikeaHurricane · 06/07/2013 10:55

Not posted for ages but read the thread everyday. Congratulations to bssh and betsy and any other losers Grin congrats also to everyone who completed their fasts this week in whatever way they are doing themSmile
Whoever said up thread about marking successes with various different treats, I couldn't agree more. I never take my own lunch to work, lazy cow basically. As I spend around 4 quid a day on a lovely salad and a fresh soup, I worked out that by skipping it two days a week over say 46 working weeks I save £368 a year!
Excellent news I say because that money is now going to get reinvested in the new 1 stone less me! So, every time I get my hair coloured I will now be having my waxing done and when I get backs from my hols I will be regularly indulging in some HD brow treatments, they look fab but didn't want to risk it before going away.
Off to Tuscany tomorrow for two weeks so busy packing this morning then a decent hike followed by lazy BBQ this afternoon and an early night.
Special wave to the blackburn girls ceebees and peplum
Have a lovely sunny day everyone x

postmanpatscat · 06/07/2013 11:41

Welcome wriggle homeeco and gampy

After four months of logging every morsel on MFP, I stopped a week ago (it was like giving up an addiction!) I've maintained my weight since then so must have done a good job this week, even though I have neither fasted nor exercised this week. Just back from a run now though, it's hot out there!

Morning hurricane sounds like it is all going well for you and the treats sound fun! Have a fab time in my favourite part of the world.

TIP you would be proud of me this week, I disassociated myself from the staffroom biscuit tin and had none at all on Weds or Thurs and only one on Friday!

Hope you are all enjoying the sunshine - can I pretend Tennis is the sun?

SquidgyMummy · 06/07/2013 11:57

Well am on my 2 day of fasting. Have just had "lunch" of some strawberries and sparkling water.

DP was being arsey today (gone to his mum's now) so was really tempted to have some cheese on toast. however why sabotage myself because i feel like comfort eating? As the old saying goes, "nothing tastes as good as thin feels" .

I am just hovering around being 11stone something and just over 12, so hopefully today's fast will tip me over.

Unrelated, but was wondering if Mimi Spencer was a MNer as there are lots of quotes from MNers in the book. I like to think of her lurking on the 5:2 boards to see how we are all doing!!

Emilythornesbff · 06/07/2013 12:12

Hmmm.
Agree about snacking not being good (although I'm pretty sure I've done worse things to my body tbh)
So I will try really hard. Certainly on weekdays.
The trouble is, ona NFD these snacks (and it's usually total crap, a chunk of crusty bread dragged through the lurpak or a handful of Cheerios FFS) sometimes just make their evil way into my all to receptive mouth.
[books own appearance on "secret eaters"]
Thankfully today is Saturday Grin
Totally back on it on Monday. Wink

babysaurus · 06/07/2013 12:28

I managed, relatively easily, to fast for two days this week and am all enthusiastic about next week. Thing is, now I have one week painlessly under my belt, I can't quite believe how easy it is and keep thinking that surely this can't work?!

postmanpatscat · 06/07/2013 13:00

Oh yes baby it does and it really can be that easy!

MissUnicorn · 06/07/2013 14:29

Hello peeps
Hope everyone is OK.
NFD for me, which is lucky because my sister has decided to have an impromptu going away party. She leaves for Bolivia tomorrow to do voluntary work out there.

I've been badgered asked to make two cheesecakes.

Emily I'm trying this no snack thing too, I've devised a little plan; whether it works or not I dunno.

As soon as I feel I need a snack, I'm going to make sure there's a water bottle around and drink some first.
Then I'm going to put the snack on a plate. I'll do that for every single snack. Then I'm going hide the plate in the microwave. When I'm properly hungry, I'll eat it as a meal.
Congrats on the weight loss Bssh, erd & Gamby
Fab hurricane, treats are important. Have a great holiday.
*Squidgy have a great fast day!

BigW · 06/07/2013 16:22

Just got weighed after 3 weeks of diet and 3 times a week powerplate.

I weigh exactly the same as when I started. Sad

On the plus side, I have lost 4 inches from my waist and half an inch from my hips, arms and tighs.

What should I do? Add in an extra fast day for a bit? Feeling a bit demotivated tbh Sad

MissUnicorn · 06/07/2013 16:52

BigW
You've lost 5.5 inches! That is amazing! Imagine how much you could've gained in the same time.
Going 4:3 may be an idea if you want scales success but don't brush off your great NSV.

I'm out with my mum & I'm dying to eat! I've survived her munching kettle crisps beside me.
