The 5:2 Thread number 22! Put down that biscuit - you can eat it tomorrow

BetsyBell · 23/06/2013 15:54

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads:
most recent, one before that, another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnichts for putting together all the info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hello aftereights fab work!

Unplanned sort of 16:8 for me today as I didn't eat from 9pm last night until 3pm today. Too hot to run but we had a fairly brisk walk around Kew Gardens. I might have broken my fast a bit earlier but the cafe prices were ridiculous!

jnq when do you eat your 500? Is it in one meal or spread out?

jnq1 · 07/07/2013 21:52

Hi postmanpatscat I usually spread the 500 cals out - between 2pm and 6pm ......could that be where I'm going wrong?
TIP I always exercise on empty - I've heard it burns our fat stores more effectively........
I'm hoping its just a stall and might keep going for 1 more week before I change my meal pattern but it sounds like its worth a try - thx TIP
I thought I'd hit a plateau but not this early on with a stone at least to lose (sigh ) and 5 weeks til my holiday........
Oh well I suppose 7lbs is still pretty good :)

Talkinpeace · 07/07/2013 21:55

jnq
have a go at single meal fasting .... so nothing but tea, water and miso soup and then the whole 500 in a single meal of something really fulfilling like veg stir fry or soup or omelette

jnq1 · 07/07/2013 22:01

Thx TIP I'll start that tomorrow and report back next week !

MissUnicorn · 07/07/2013 22:13

Bah, failed at no snacked miserably today.Blush Tomorrow, however, is another day.

Talkinpeace · 07/07/2013 22:16

I snacked today too - Sundays are my splurge day!
Tomorrow we fast Grin

cannotfuckingbelievethis · 07/07/2013 22:50

Fasting again tomorrow. When I had my first day on Thursday I had breakfast and then dinner at 5pm. Think I'll try and survive on water and tea until dinner time tomorrow and then have a stir fry and prawns. No rice of course. I need to get better organised on my fast days....

BsshBossh · 07/07/2013 23:03

Yeah, I snacked too MissU but a) not to the extent I used to b) it's the weekend so who cares!

FD tomorrow. Bring it on!

AmericasTorturedBrow · 08/07/2013 00:31

Hello all, checking in at 4pm my time!

After8 so good to see you and yay to maintaining! This board is generally such positive reading so can only apologize for not name checking, on my phone!

We had a full on BBQ party yesterday so while it was 16:8 I think I consumed 2000 cals in booze and brownies alone! Fasting today but not very hungry, had a bit of leftover BBQ salmon and a handful of cheesy goldfish things do about 150kcal. Date night with DH but think we'll just go for non alcoholic drinks. Trying to decide which 3 days to fast next week and can't really plan it til I hear back on a few plans, annoyingly!

EagleRiderDirk · 08/07/2013 07:03

good Monday morning all.

today is the start of my new regime, so hello fellow fasters. not sure how today is going to go after two dodgy sleepless nights thanks to this unbearable weather Sad Though at least I'm in charge of just one DC today, and can keep myself busy as its easier to get out and about for things, and clean my horrendous kitchen before something stats growing in it.

well done all losers and good luck all fasters today

akarucker · 08/07/2013 07:21

It's Monday
It's hot!
It's fast day!
It's 'Je ne Regrette Rien' Day!

Tommy · 08/07/2013 07:59

starting off as a fast day but meeting friends for coffee later and not sure if cake will be there too Grin

JB30 · 08/07/2013 08:03

Aiming to fast til dinner time - about 6pm. Hmm, 1st time and a tad nervous. But I need to do it, hideous eating/drinking over weekend. Body feels abused! Cup of black tea beside my litre bottle of water, yum!
Best of luck fellow Monday fasters Wink

BsshBossh · 08/07/2013 08:04

Morning fellow fasters!

BetsyBell · 08/07/2013 08:34

Good morning Fasters! I've been awol all weekend, plenty of indulgence to smooth over with today's fast Grin. Only water for me so far, I've missed my cup of tea window of opportunity before dashing to school so just grabbed a big glass of water.

Don't use up the thread too fast - I'll pop a new one up later! Any ideas for a pithy title for thread number 23?

Morning fellow fasters.
I love the feeling of starting a FD. But I am having milk in my coffee. Blush
Emergency at casa Thorne! Normal FDs are mon and thurs.
For convenience (when my scummy and excitable ds is at CM) tuesday and Thursday would be better. But that means consecutive fasts.
I have been up most of the night with a hungry ebf babythorne and cannot think straight. So do I do mon/we'd, tues/we'd, tues/thurs, tues/fri?
Aargh hh!
Also thinking that skipping breakfast every day might be a good thing.
Please tell me how to live my life this week.
Em

AphraBehn · 08/07/2013 08:49

First week over - 4lbs lost Smile

Last week was a very busy week, I was eating on the go a lot and resorted to fast food a couple of times. This week I need to pay as much attention to NFDs as I do FDs.

Dotty342kids · 08/07/2013 08:51

jnq don't despair! I'm similar height and start weight was 11st 8. Like you, I found the first half stone came off easily but then I got stuck for several weeks despite sticking to 5:2 and my usual exercise regime. Bizarrely, it was the blowout week of my 40th and subsequent return to 5:2 which seemed to get things moving again and now I'm down to 10st 8. Not sure what to suggest to you other than changing things around for a week or so to "surprise" your body a bit Grin
aka your post really made me laugh!

SoTiredAgain · 08/07/2013 08:59

Morning everyone. Another faster here. Enjoy the weather.

Beachcomber · 08/07/2013 09:39

Hi everyone. Can I join you? Have been reading your threads for a bit and considering which WOE would work best for me and am sure this is it (if I have the willpower!).

I'm 5 foot 2 and smallish framed. I don't have a huge amount to lose - probably a total of 5kg, but 5kg looks like quite a lot on me as am small framed shortarse. The 5kg is pretty much all flab around my middle so not healthy and feels horrid.

I had a first go at fasting on Thursday and managed OK but had forgotten that we were invited to MILs for her birthday in the evening so it ended up being a not very mini fast. However I didn't eat till about 8pm in the evening so at least I found out that I can hold out that long

I tend to get shaky and faint when I don't eat so it was reassuring to see that I can not eat for that long. That is one of the reasons I'm doing this - I obviously have issues with blood sugar that are messing my appetite up. Am hoping fasting will help body re-set all that.

So, first proper fast day today. After having read your threads, I'm deffo going for the nothing till dinner method as I'm sure if I have breakfast or lunch that will bring on the blood sugar crash shakes later on. Am drinking loads of water and using LoseIt to help me keep track of calories on NFDs until I get used to things.

Well done to all of you here with your inspiring stories of being in charge of your health and weight!

babysaurus · 08/07/2013 10:18

Fast day today for me too.
I took the plunge and went on the I Shout Your Weight machine in Boots on Saturday. I am 12 stone 4lbs and my BMI is classified as overweight at 29. However, I was expecting my weight to be more like 13 so am sort of pleased. Getting down to ten or, preferably, just under doesnt sound too daunting (well, I say that now...)

babysaurus · 08/07/2013 10:24

Hmm.
Just put in my details into a BMI calculator thingy and seen that, on the 28.6 it put me at, I am on the cusp of being classified as obese.
Don't feel quite so good as before now!

Gilbertus · 08/07/2013 12:01

Hello. I hope you don't mind me joining in. 2nd FD today (1st was Thursday). Think I am going to try Monday and Thursday at first so I can have two days 'respite' between them. Does that work?

I currently weigh 11 5 and am a smidge under 5 foot 8. I start to look 'myself' at 10 stone 10 so would be delighted to get down to that.

Had quite a full on weekend so was quite looking forward to fasting. So far I've had a mug of tea (semi skimmed no sugar), a 10 cal jelly and lots of water. Have just begun to get that slightly glassy, headachey feeling I got last Thursday. Will drink more water and have another small mug of tea in minute. Am trying to get to 2ish before eating (pack of john west tuna (110cals) and chopped up lettuce/tomato/cucumber and then will have a 300 cal meal this evening at around 7.

I've found this thread to be so motivational and inspiring! Thank you!

BsshBossh · 08/07/2013 12:01

Don't despair babysaurus, when I started 5:2 late January I was 28 BMI and now I'm 24 (heading for 21 or 22 hopefully). Just stick at it and that number will dip downwards.
