Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 22! Put down that biscuit - you can eat it tomorrow

BetsyBell · 23/06/2013 15:54

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads:
most recent, one before that, another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnichts for putting together all the info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thanks! Guess I was just expecting it to show on the scales. I sort of put the inch loss down to the exercise and the weight loss (or not!) to the diet IYSWIM.

Talkinpeace · 06/07/2013 17:38

Squidgy
To the best of my knowledge Mimi is not a MN poster, BUT one of the researchers for the book and the website is - hence why several of us are quoted in both - we gave our permission and in fact on the FastDiet website, several of us are name checked by our real names!

Back when the books started to come out there was a bit of harrumphing about people cashing in but the consensus was that without MMs programme we'd all still be a lot fatter so he was allowed to take the credit!

BigW
Learn to enjoy "non scale victories"
basically as you get fitter, your body becomes denser
you loose excess fluid
then fat gets turned into muscle
then muscle gets denser as it is toned up

If I stop going to the gym, my waist expands by up to 2 inches - without any change in weight - because my abdominal muscles get flabbier
when I took my profile picture I'd just finished 3 hours of exercise.
Today my tummy is nowhere near that flat!

SquidgyMummy · 06/07/2013 19:57

Took some advice posted up thread, and saved the majority of my calories for dinner. Definitely easier as i kept myself busy doing cleaning and laundry most of the day, as well as running round after DS (2.8)

Had 2 roasted peppers (as i like the sweet taste).
Then got a 60cal pot of natural yoghurt and used half, mixed with tandoori spices to make a tandoori marinade. Cut 2 chicken breasts in small pieces, marinaded and then baked in oven with peppers. When cooked weighed about 150g which according to calorie count website was 198 calories.

Used rest of yoghurt to make a raita - chopped one tomato, a bit of cucumber, half a spring onion and mixed. Served all with lettuce.

The huge plate looked really overwhelming, and i ended up leaving almost a 3rd (is still in the fridge if i get really ravenous, but i think i will try and stick it out till breakfast - so that will be another 12 hours fast.)

I am getting used to the idea of feeling a bit hungry is ok, i don't think i have ever let myself get hungry, as i have always snacked

BsshBossh · 06/07/2013 20:02

SquidgyMummy your FD dinner sounds divine! And well done too - isn't it great to discover a little bit of hunger doesn't = end of the world! I used to be such a snacker and grazer but now I seem happy to wait until a proper mealtime. I could never have been able to do this without having tried fasting first though.

BigW · 06/07/2013 20:12

Squidgy that sounds delicious!

SoTiredAgain · 06/07/2013 20:32

Healthy food day (NFD) today. Planning 16:8 tomorrow.

AphraBehn · 06/07/2013 22:03

That sounds lovely squidgymummy. Think I'll do something similar next week.

Second FD here, came in at 586 and haven't felt hungry at all. Kids sat next to me eating takeaway pizza but I wasn't tempted.

Lunch was 2 poached eggs on 2 slices of ham, then went to school fete/picnic and just drank 1l of water that I'd taken along. Came home and had some paprika squid with salad and a yoghurt.

somewherebecomingrain · 06/07/2013 22:06

Hi have lost another pound in a 2-week period involving one fast and 3 16:8s.

SmileAm breastfeeding btw.

Love this Woe. If you fall off the wagon it doesn't really matter. It lives and grows with you.

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 07/07/2013 08:02

Morning all. Just wanted to touch base & say that I'm still on this WOE & for those who don't know me I've lost 4 stone since the horizon programme. I'm now a much healthier 10&half stone, this time last year I was 14&half. I'm now happily maintaining.

I've spent ££££ on new clothes & binned the rest apart from one pair of size 18 trousers I've kept as a reminder! I now wear dresses - unheard of before. I've also bought myself bikinis to wear on holiday & I actually have the confidence to wear them.

So if you are thinking of starting this WOE give it a go. I tell people about it all the time. It's the easiest 'diet' I've ever been on because its not a diet if that makes sense. Give it a go the only thing you've got to lose is weight.

BsshBossh · 07/07/2013 08:26

Aftereights welcome back. You are truly an inspiration!

DeckSwabber · 07/07/2013 09:23

Had a couple of very wobbly weeks - birthdays and other compulsory meals making it hard to find a good day to fast, then stress at work and at home.

But I've continued to lose weight - 9.6 this morning. Only a few weeks ago was hovering on 10st, and before I started was around 10.7 mark.

Fasted yesterday - tea in the morning and at night, otherwise just water.

SoTiredAgain · 07/07/2013 09:48

aftereights that's awesome. Congratulations on the weight loss and on maintaining too.

deckswabber. Well done on continuing to lose weight with all the functions and the stress thrown in. And yay on the the loss of a stone. Am in awe of people who do zero calorie fast (discounting the tea, of course).

SoTiredAgain · 07/07/2013 09:50

somewhere. Great that you are losing weight with mostly doing 16:8 and a fast. Well done. Smile

DeckSwabber · 07/07/2013 10:13

SoTired, tea is not negotiable. Most mornings I have made and drunk half a cup before I'm even awake, and I can't drink it black. But otherwise not eating all day is getting easier - I just say 'I'll have that tomorrow' and I'm fine.

JB30 · 07/07/2013 10:26

I recovered from my hangover from hell with the help of a 16:8 - let's just say I made full use of the 8 hours! After my scale gain of 1.2 this week (I say scale gain as I think it was more retention than gain) I'm scared to go near the stupid yoke, especially after my feed day Friday and ton of carby/creamy/indulgent food yesterday - I havent eaten yet today so another 16:8 I reckon. I honestly can't think of what I'd like to eat today Sad Bit strange really, normally mind over flows with food fantasies!
Aftereights that is amazing, so encouraging - I was telling all my friends about this and one is starting Monday - feel like a proud mother Grin

Emilythornesbff · 07/07/2013 10:59

deckswabber I also find it easier just not to eat on a FD.
I simply cba to devise a 500cal menu.

I'm really hoping to get to target soon so I can consider the (quite scary) prospect of maintaining on 6:1.

Southeastdweller · 07/07/2013 11:13

Stomach cramps all day yesterday because of all the booze on Friday night meant all I could manage was an apple and a coffee. I don't think I want to drink that much again ever.

I feel so passionate about this WOL and bang on about it to anyone who'll listen. I seriously feel like I could run weekly weigh-in classes like they do at Weight Watchers.

TIP You look great in that pic and not what I imagined at all!

wrigglebum · 07/07/2013 15:10

Fantastic to hear some really good weight loss results, what a boost to keep going.

I've been using MFP to keep track of calories on NFDs and, since I'm cutting out snacks, it seems like I can eat tons and still be eating around my TDEE. It almost feels like an effort to eat enough now rather than being constantly hungry but eating a lot more calories.

BsshBossh · 07/07/2013 16:26

wrigglemum when I look back at my old MFP entries I can see that often I was consuming a meal's worth of calories (sometimes more) on snacks alone! Amazing how much more I can eat now at a proper meal (eg nice puddings!) now I've cut out snacks.

Talkinpeace · 07/07/2013 17:01

Flowers Aftereights Yay, whoop, good to hear from you - come join us on maintainers ......
So, so pleased that the weight has stayed off and you are happy in your new skin.

Snacks
crap aren't they.
Whoosh 1000 calories used up between meals, not even on things you really wanted to eat
in fact on thing you know you'll regret
or on things you know are bad for you
and never shared with those you love

Meals
wonderful things
plan ahead,
structure the menu
enjoy the preparation
enjoy the presentation
enjoy the eating
even more so when those you love say thankyou at the end for a delicious repast and a pleasant hour sat together eating well without distraction

Breadandwine · 07/07/2013 18:42

Just to add to that great post Tip, another thing to remember is that a snack will never assuage your hunger!!

Rather it will stimulate your appetite - and you'll want more.

So, don't have that first nibble!

Wait for your tea, like a good girl (boy!)! Smile

Dotty342kids · 07/07/2013 19:08

sotired my snacking weak points are a) when I get up for a wander / break from my desk and b) once kids are in bed (chocolate!). I'm thinking that I could take the break from my desk by putting telly on for ten mins / sitting outside / doing some squats (recently completed 30 day challenge and am quite missing doing them!).

BssBossh that sounds like it's quite do-able then. Right, might give that one a go....

aftereights, great to see you back! I remember your posts when I was first toying iwth doing this back in Jan of this year. 4 and a half stone? Wow! Really amazing and I bet you've had a brilliant time shopping and being able to wear all those lovely new things.

Great to read all your weekend messages. I've been away eating / drinking and am off to horrid London again tomorrow. I managed last week there without eating so am probably going to attempt the same tomorrow but not treat it as a fast day as such as am out for dinner with friends tomorrow night. Tuesday and Thursday are this week's fast days for me Smile

Enjoy yourselves Monday fasters! Isn't it easier when this heat knocks your appetite out anyway?!

SoTiredAgain · 07/07/2013 20:29

Successful 16:8 today. As dotty says, helped by by the heat and Murray playing!

Fasting tomorrow (making the most of this heat).

dotty other ideas for break from desk include: watering plants/weeding/deadheading (gardening theme), sun salutes (yoga), blasting out some music and singing/dancing, trying out an outfit combo, anything to keep you active and away from the kitchen.

jnq1 · 07/07/2013 21:23

Hi everyone! Well done to aftereights
Really fed up - I lost 7 lbs in the first 4 weeks doing 4:3 but since then my weight has not budged in the last 3 weeks. I'm sticking to my 500 cals on fd and tdee of 1695 on the other 4 days. I work out 4 days a week (3 times with a trainer and one run a week) plus an hour dog walking a day. I just don't know what else to do? I'm 5ft 2 and weigh 10st 12 and want to loose anther stone.
TIP any suggestions?

Talkinpeace · 07/07/2013 21:29

Hi jnq1
all I can think of from what you say is to switch to 5:2
and then do the
2 at 500
2 at TDEE - 10%
2 at TDEE
1 at TDEE + 20%
and try to change your meal pattern - so that you are exercising on empty as then your body HAS to call on reserves
