The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi all just reporting am in a mini.plateau at a loss of 1st 2. BUT-get this......2 people at my zumba class said wow you've lost a lot of weight AND I had to tuck the waistband of my zumba class trousers into my pants waistband because they kept falling down! So in all, (because I'll have to ditch them), I will have had to have thrown away a total of 4 pairs of trousers! (2 work,2 casual)! Wow....what an eating plan this is. :-)

Inlovewithchocolate · 22/06/2013 14:40

Hi everyone, not posted for a while, purely because I am ashamed of myself. Have put most of my weight back on. I am going to try again, I know it works.

JB30 · 22/06/2013 15:51

Oh don't be sorry Erd - it was a bar I'd much neglected, sales of bountys and sweet corn will go through the roof over the next few weeks. Avoiding snacking as best I can but a tad worried I'm being a bit too controlley like I'm on strict diet so I think I'll be prescribing myself a bounty after my dinner tonight Grin. It's so hard to break the mindset of dieting, defo think this WOL is leaning much more towards how slim people live (the ones that make it look effortless)
Loving hearing about all the nsv's - I'm really looking forward to that happening. Clothes in general are much more comfy but I need another 7 pounds to see any real change I reckon

angelabbie · 22/06/2013 15:53

Thanks Eagle, I had heard the smell was not great. I will have a stir fry for a late lunch on my FD on monday and see how we go. I will be on my fifth FD and I walk for three miles to my nearest subway, pick up a turkey and ham with salad and have that for my dinner. Its delicious and filling and gives me a reason to do the walk.

INLOVE~WITH no need to be ashamed, you are back, that is all that matters, best of luck.

Sausages that is brilliant, it just shows that the weight side of things are not the be all and end all.

Inlovewithchocolate
Do not be ashamed.
Be annoyed with yourself but not ashamed as there will be a reason.
Be annoyed that you dealt with that reason by eating rather than other means.
But now, you know you have the tools to loose the weight and take control and feel fantastic.

Talkinpeace · 22/06/2013 15:59

Why am I getting thinner but not dropping on the scales?
because you are getting denser

I'm pretty fit and lean. I go to the gym a LOT.
If I skip two weeks at the gym - eating less because I'm burning less calories - my waist can go up by almost two inches
because all of my muscles go BLEEUURRGGHH and lose density.
But I've not added any actual weight.
And it goes away again after about 4 days.

For those of you losing weight, you'll go through phases of using up fluid stores. Then turning fat into muscle which is 8% denser, then turning that into toned muscle and losing a bit more fluid.
And as you get slimmer and exercise more the cycle of size and weight will be cyclical.

Inlovewithchocolate · 22/06/2013 17:56

TIP thank you. Your right I have the tools and I'm going to use them.

EagleRiderDirk · 22/06/2013 17:56

peplum41 · 22/06/2013 19:08

eagle I can see a tiny halo emoticon.

chocupid and inlovewithchoc just jump in, good to have you back.Smile

aka I always wondered if ADF would make me eat like that. Not ideal, but it got you into fasting. Phew, about those lbs coming off again. Atleast you've managed "no chocolate June", I did not. But, I would no longer describe self as chocoholic, even reading about bounties isn't getting me going. That I credit to 5:2. Im trying to have cheese instead, only a little as chocful of cals,(should that be cheeseful?), but doesn't impact the insulin the same, and fills you up. Not snacking, or atleast trying not too.

Jb30 I like your plan, Im going to 16:8 tomorrow instead of mini-fast, thanks for the idea.Smile, it fits in better with the days plans. Ive started going the gym, been once doing a running programme on the cross trainer. Will move to treadmill when lighter.

itsa I bet you looked totally fab in your skinny jeans and heels!

Meggymoodle · 22/06/2013 20:30

Hello all - would you mind if I joined you? I have been doing 5:2 for about 8 weeks. Started at 11.6 and am now at 10.10. I do a lot of exercise and am at home with 2 sprogs so rarely sit down.

Seem to have put on this week (1lb) and am a bit dispondent so have come on here for some inspiration and support. Have enjoyed the thread so far :)
