The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hooray it's Friday! Only 20 more working days until the end of term then I can relax in the glorious sunshine that is the British summer Grin

Well done prawn eagle and southeast on your losses and trying and laurie on your milestones!

sotired you're doing great too. You've almost caught me up but I'm not following you all the way down to 8st!

Fast day for me today, I need one. Hadn't banked on it being a colleague's birthday and the staffroom being full of cakes, but so be it. Will probably keep myself busy later and not break my fast until the morning. Also off to Westfield later for DP's birthday present - see you there southeast !

BsshBossh · 21/06/2013 12:18

Laurie I remember well that feeling of elation when I got under 200lbs. Terrific!

It was supposed to be a mini FD today but am currently eating masala dosa at an Indian restaurant. Oh we'll, it's really the start of the weekend today isn't it?! Grin.

Back on it next week.

Itsaboatjack · 21/06/2013 12:35

NFD here, and I've just broken my fat with a goats cheese salad and pecans, almonds and strawberries. Yum.

Back to work now, hope everyone has a good day.

Talkinpeace · 21/06/2013 13:21

THE CROWD ARE IMPRESSED
It is really, really satisfying to see so many people taking control of their lives by controlling their food and by the by bringing their weight back under control.

Another week where I did not lose weight, but that makes it 6 months of maintaining with some excellent meals and holidays and good times stashed in there.

Which is what its really all about
enjoying food in sensible quantities
and enjoying good health.
Way to go!

Dotty342kids · 21/06/2013 13:23

itsaboat, impressed that you lasted this long! I broke mine this morning at 7.15 with a toasted muffin, butter and lemon curd Smile

Cat98 · 21/06/2013 14:49

Well done everyone! Some motivational posts here :)

Feed day today. I struggled in the evening of yesterday's fd - I usually try and not eat from 6.30 on an fd until 10.30 the next day for the 16 hr gap - but I had to have a Ryvita at 10 pm last night as I was so hungry! I didn't go over the 500 cal by much though - it could have been something much worse!

Today I've had a cheese and tomato sandwich, a v small slice of cake and a few raspberries. Hopefully nothing else until dinner (spinach and feta pasta) - I'm quite full.

Enjoy your weekends everyone!
My work trousers feel just a little looser already :)

BsshBossh · 21/06/2013 14:52

Despite my (very yummy) masala dosa for lunch, I can still salvage the day. Hurrah! DH won't be home for dinner tonight so I can simply skip it. Friday = mini fast afterall.

Talkinpeace · 21/06/2013 14:57

BsshBossh
Yay, you are thinking like a skinnymalink.
"I can eat this big meal because I'll moderate my intake in the meals before and after"
that realisation is why you see models and film stars eating Burgers and staying slim - because they did NOT EAT the meals around it.

JB30 · 21/06/2013 16:19

Down by 3.4lb in 6 days Grin Did a 16:8 yesterday, well nearly - was out with work last night and on way home had bounty & pack of crisps - someone mentioned bounty on here last week and I really fancied one. Thoroughly enjoyed although was a little annoyed I'd broken my 16:8 at the last hurdle. Decided to fast until lunch so while not quite a 16:8, more a 12:8 but felt good that I didn't feel like I had to eat hotel brekkie just coz its paid for.
Looks like lots of us are doing good this week, such a good feeling when I stood on scales yesterday Grin

LexingtonBear · 21/06/2013 16:23

Feeling really positive after a 3 fast day week: I've found it's given me greater discipline and a renewed enthusiasm for fasting properly. Odd. It's also kick started the weight loss again after a 4 week plateau. Am very nearly in sight of the 11s after starting the year somewhere alarmingly north of 14! Just wanted to post to encourage others who were losing a bit of stringency over their approach to fasting - I've found this week that really going back to basics, not eating at all til 6 on fast days has really got me back into gear. And of course, no snacking...

Happy weekends, all

postmanpatscat · 21/06/2013 16:42

I couldn't have been surrounded by less food today if I worked in a restaurant. Colleague's birthday so staffroom full of cheesecake, biscuits, chocolate cake, Twix fingers etc. They were still hanging around at lunchtime. Also in the afternoon a food event with my class, so a classroom full of crisps, pizza, cake, curries, paratha, puri and various Indian sweets and desserts I can't remember the names of! After school 1:1 teaching, and my pupil arrives with enough biscuits to sink a battleship. It's a good job I've got iron will!

JB great result and Lexington glad things are on the move for you again and fingers crossed for 11 something very soon!

headintheclouds · 21/06/2013 17:00

Im struggling a bit today. Its a fast day which I changed from Thursday to Friday this week. Its usually my G&T and crisps before dinner day!!

Im not actually physically hungry, just mentally want my usual Friday!! The sun is cracking the flags here on my patio and it would make it complete if I had a nice, cold wine in my hand .... Im torturing myself arent I?

I have got some of Laskas aubergine / chick pea curry in the fridge for later ( do try it if you havent, its on the recipe thread and its very delicious) . Even better after its steeped in the fridge for a couple of days and the flavours develop.

This is the end of week 20 for me..and end of 2nd week of trying to change things a bit ,upped the exercise and reduced my TDEE to sedentary and Not eating the exercise cals back .This is an attempt to speed up my slow loss and plateaus...
Hope everyone has a great weekend.

peplum41 · 21/06/2013 18:16

Well done postie, how on earth did you resist that lot, not sure what sounds tastier, the cheesecakes and twixes or the pizza and indian stuff. Homer Simpson type drool. I think I would've caved with Indian goodies, because they're unusual, as in not as run of the mill as your walk down to the corner shop twix.

Hitc channel your inner skinny and resist. Im doing something similar, same reason. Sigh, lets hope it works for us eh? Its also very hot here, but I took the wine out of the fridge yesterday, pre-empting the temptation of that Friday evening alcohol and snacks siren.

Well done also Lexington, how far away are the 11s?

Oh snacks how I miss you. Stirfry soon. Then a wine- less Gardener's world and bed.

BsshBossh · 21/06/2013 18:26

Oh Gardener's World? Must hit record.

TiP exactly! We just need to be logical about it all. It's how I lost all my weight.

SoTiredAgain · 21/06/2013 18:29

postmanpatcat. I feel for you. In our classroom we were making popcorn. The smell was delicious and it was my fast day Grin

EagleRiderDirk · 21/06/2013 18:43

OK, this may be a stupid question but I get the 16hr fast to get rid of your glycogen stores, but what happens when you go longer than that? is it extra fat burn? I generally do around 24hrs but that's only because that works best for me hunger and control wise. Just wondering if thats helping me?

peaberry · 21/06/2013 18:56

Hi Everyone!

peplum Gardener's World is one of the things I miss most from living in England.

Yesterday was a disastrous NFD and today I'm considering emptying the house of tempting foods. I am not going to do any more baking this weekend and will toss the leftover pizza. But wonder if you sage IFers have advice on how to manage the kitchen supply? Even teething biscuits have been a problem in the past. (Shameful but true) Sweets and things are definitely not great for DCs either so maybe I just need to keep it healthy at home for now?

Just feeling like for every step forward I take two back (and eat more pie).

SoTiredAgain · 21/06/2013 19:56

Had a lovely meal of cod in a tomato and thyme sauce with new potatoes and veg, followed by chocolate, so why is my tummy rumbling like mad that I have not eaten enough? Sad

Prawntoast · 21/06/2013 20:07

Another NSV, just tried on my wetsuit and it's baggy, need to go down a size!!

BsshBossh · 21/06/2013 20:21

I completely take back my previous post. DH has called and he's not going to be late after all. He's picking up fish and chips on the way home and I didn't resist. I did tell him to only get one portion for us both to share though Blush. So no mini fast today afterall.

(I'm not seriously beating myself up about it though - 1 proper 500 cal fast completed this week plus 1 mini fast - better than nothing!)

Talkinpeace · 21/06/2013 20:24

But is he getting you a pickled egg?

DH got home from three days away. One of my clients had dropped off a bottle of champagne earlier
so I just had fish, chips, pickled egg, ketchup and champagne for supper
nom nom

now to sober up by midnight to collect DD from Rock Challenge!

BsshBossh · 21/06/2013 20:30

OMG I love pickled eggs

ceebeegeebies · 21/06/2013 20:32

Evening all Smile

FD here - been ok. They are definitely getting slightly easier but am a LONG way from looking forward to them Wink

I came home from work and DH had bought 4 chocolate doughnuts - I gave one to DS2 and so very nearly caved in and ate one myself....but managed to resist Grin For some reason, I find my willpower is so much better on a FD - it is as if my body knows it can't eat it so it doesn't make me eat it iyswim. Willpower is pretty crap on NFD (and generally which is why diets haven't worked in the past) so it is definitely a psychological thing. Anyone else like that?

Am now wondering if Peplum is living in the same part of the country as me as I wouldn't describe it as 'really hot' Wink Grin

Am off to see Robbie Williams and Olly Murs tomorrow night - cannot wait! Can also treat myself to a lovely tea out with my DSis, with wine and all guilt-free - this WOE rocks Smile

headintheclouds · 21/06/2013 20:55

ceebie and peplum I'm the North West also , and whilst I described it as 'cracking the flags' it wasnt like that all day! Quite cloudy and muggy until 4 pm when the sun suddenly broke through for a couple of hours at G&T o clock!Grin.

Couldnt resist though so I did have a little drink, but still came in at under 500 cals. Also my car was in the garage for an MOT today so as well as my new gym regime Ive done a good 80 minutes worth of brisk walking today after dropping the car off. That must have cancelled out the alcohol eh?

headintheclouds · 21/06/2013 20:58

meant to say IN the North West , hey ceebee enjoy Robbie and Olly (Robbie looks like he would benefit from a bit of 5:2 at the momentGrin )
