The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

He may do but I still would Wink

alwaysanauntie · 21/06/2013 22:30

Evening all, pretty good FD here today, I did have an apple at 10.45 as I had IT training until 1pm and couldn't quite hold out that long. Also found a yummy M&S prawn cocktail salad that came in at 80 cals and with carrot & coriander soup for tea I'm well in target at 400 cals for the day (did have 3 teas with semi skim milk).

Sotired my tum was making a huge amount of noise after dinner, I think it's just all that food rolling around in there when it's not had much to do all day, it's like "yummmm, food! munch munch, gurgle gurgle!" hope you got over it and didn't cave though Wink

Really inspiring to hear everyone's successes, hope you all enjoy the weekend whatever you're up to, and have a Wine if you fancy it :)

postmanpatscat · 21/06/2013 22:51

peplum Indian goodies aren't unusual round here...about 22 of my kids are of Indian or Pakistani origin!

I've made it through the day on peppermint tea alone, despite all the temptation. No run today, but my trip to Westfield made sure I managed over 11,000 steps.

I get a pretty noisy tummy at times too, but like the waves of hunger, it passes.

peaberry I don't have much junk in the house, then DDs can't eat it either. About 1 week in 4 I run the fridge and cupboards right down and DD2 behaves as if she lives in the workhouse Grin

ceebee enjoy Robbie and Olly, sounds fun. Two weeks today we'll be at Michael Buble at the O2!

Cat98 · 21/06/2013 23:06

Ceebee - I am exactly like that - willpower pretty good on an fd but on nfds I am struggling!

Breadandwine · 21/06/2013 23:16

For some reason, I find my willpower is so much better on a FD - it is as if my body knows it can't eat it so it doesn't make me eat it iyswim. Willpower is pretty crap on NFD (and generally which is why diets haven't worked in the past) so it is definitely a psychological thing. Anyone else like that?

cbgbees we're all like that! This puzzled me for quite a while, too, when I first began IFing - and I figured out that it isn't psychological, it's physiological!

I've written about it here on my blog.

Put simply, when there's food about, the appetite is stimulated so that we will eat to lay down stores for the bad times. Incidentally, this imperative is why we become overweight in the first place - we're only doing what nature intended.

Pickled eggs, eh? I long held the theory that you can wrap anything in a bread dough - until I tried it with a pickled egg! Shock

It was diabolical! Grin

virginposter · 21/06/2013 23:36

breadandwine many thanks for the tip about the Lidl scales (even though we know they may not be really accurate they at least give us a starting point to work down from).
I've had family down this week and despite the usual indulgences saw a flicker of a 9 on the scales this morning (usually 10) so very pleased Grin. Also have just realised that I know 9 people who are successfully doing 5:2 or variations of it and I introduced them to it! Yay!!

Itsaboatjack · 22/06/2013 01:08

OMG, what a good night I've had. I was at my friends 50th birthday party which I hosted at my pub. There was lots of people who I see regularly but not really when I'm dressed up. I had my hair and make up done and was in my skinny jeans and heals and got soo many nice comments. It gave me so much confidence I even joined in with the karaoke.

I know I went over my TDEE with nibbling at the buffet and quite a few drinks but I know I'll be able to counter balance it.

akarucker · 22/06/2013 07:48

Oh thank goodness! So, my ten days of switching things up after my disastrous month has shown a 7lb loss of the 10lbs Blush I had put on.

I've switched from ADF to 5:2 and defiantly feel this was the right thing to do. Also, SHOCK, I have managed to stick to my rule of not buying any chocolate in June. There were a few days where DH kept coming home with choc for me, but I asked him to stop Sad

I know that the 10lb gain was not all true weight...but some of it was.....!

I am missing chocolate terribly though. I seem totally incapable of eating it reasonably, so I hope depriving myself of it doesn't end in disaster.

NFD today so looking forward to enjoying every bite of food today. And wine!

postmanpatscat · 22/06/2013 08:01

Hooray aka you're doing great!

Zero fast for me yesterday, I am SO ready for breakfast this morning so I can hit the gym later! I bought myself some sports sunglasses yesterday to wear in the rain so I don't look daft with running gear and fashion sunglasses on when I run outside. One of the mums at school told me she had seen me out running and said 'You run really fast!" It's not true, but it was nice to hear Grin

Have a good Saturday everyone!

BsshBossh · 22/06/2013 08:45

aka that's fantastic! And so reassuring that going from more fasting (ADF) to less fasting (5:2) enables the lbs to drop off too. I think that is a concern for some who are transitioning away from 4:3 or ADF.

akarucker · 22/06/2013 08:56

bssh what I think I'm finding (and it's early days) is that I feel less inclined to overeat on NFD on 5:2 than on ADF. Perhaps it's because on ADF I kept thinking 'well, tomorrow I can't eat, so better stuff today' whereas now I get several days if eating in a row. I did notice that the night before a fast this last week, I ate more, so maybe that is it, but this way there are just two evenings of wanting to eat more, rather than four!

Bramblesinforrin · 22/06/2013 09:28

My turn to evaluate Robbie's 5:2 needs today!

Bit of a bounce this morning. I was on a training day yesterday with amazing catering followed by a girls' night in at mine with a lot of cheese and wine! I've stopped having so much cheese in the house as it goes straight to my stomach - but it's good against osteoporosis, hey?

Only one fd this week as had met target, getting my head around that and the bounces up after a big eat day.

EagleRiderDirk · 22/06/2013 09:29

aka well done! do you feel you can control yourself on FD? I've gotten over my mad chocolate craving in a very strange way, I have it on fast days! I tend to have a stir fry with zero noodles so the main meal is filling but very very low calorie and treat myself to a dime bar or 1 of a bounty (which are my faves not a suggestion). Do you think that could work for you? When June is over of course

ceebeegeebies · 22/06/2013 09:41

aka well done Grin what a great feeling seeing the scales drop so much and only having fast twice a week.

Itsaboat glad you had such a good evening - there is nothing like compliments to give you a proper feel-good boost Smile

Brambles I might see you tonight then Wink Am actually looking forward to Olly more than Robbie!

Breadandwine thanks for that link to your blog. It makes sense now. I definitely understand that '20 minute wait' thing - I will eat my lunch on FD and still be hungry afterwards and think it is going to be a long afternoon until tea but the feeling disappears after about 20 minutes!

Am working this morning and bought the chocolate doughnut for my mid-morning snack - couldn't resist it any longer. How early in the morning is it acceptable to eat chocolate??

akarucker · 22/06/2013 09:43

ERD I have full control of food on a FD, but I don't ever eat chocolate on a FD. I actually don't think I could handle it. Chocolate isn't food - it's my nemesis!

EagleRiderDirk · 22/06/2013 09:50

aka fair enough, distance is probably for the best then Grin

JB30 · 22/06/2013 10:15

Hmm Erd I wonder was it one of your posts I got the bounty idea from?? I think what I like about them is even though they are pretty caloric, they are really satisfying? I can chew and chew for ages - part of me thinks that makes them healthy - coconut is good fats right? Sneaks off to shop to buy mini bag'o'bountys.
Did a 3.5 mile run, ok jog, ok in 2 halves! But that means I've completed my 3 runs for the week - make a 2 week plan and that was part of it. Doing a nice full tdee day, tomorrow's 16:8 and FD Monday. All straight in my head. Going to have yummy breakfast in bed as reward for my run in the wind & rain. Happy Saturday all!

Bramblesinforrin · 22/06/2013 10:29

Ill wave ceebee

Itsaboat, well done y, great to get some good comments - spurs us on.

Dotty342kids · 22/06/2013 10:51

itsaboat, brilliant, well done on the skinnies and heels, bet you looked fab!
I had acompletely wine fuelled night last night. I'm not much of a drinker at all but sank an entire bottle on my own last night (I was out with friends, not drinking at home alone!!). Plus a lovely veggie tagine thing and a slice of cheesecake. Yum, yum.
Not in the slightest bit hungry but off to inlaws later so yummy Indian food awaits me.

Chocupid · 22/06/2013 12:12

Yippee aka well done a true breakthrough, think it will kick start the motivation again for you?
You are my inspiration now to get my ass into gear and get back into a fasting routine,
which I seem to be sabotaging for some reason now since I've reached the 9 something's! (Wonder if deep down I don't think I deserve to be this weight) and I'm still a stone off my goal weight! Shock does anyone else do this?
I'm leaving the fast till Monday now, good luck to anyone fasting over the weekend.

LikeaHurricane · 22/06/2013 13:04

Nsv alert!! Just got into a pair of river island size 10 skinny cropped jeans that I haven't been able to wear for four years and which I couldn't get into two months ago. Not only that they are slightly big on the waist and very comfortable everywhere else! I am so happyyyyyyGrin
And for everone not seeing a budge on the scales I'm about the same weight now as I was two months ago when I couldn't get in them. You will still be shrinking even if the scales don't show a lossSmile
Aka well done, really pleased for you.
itsaboat you work those skinnies girl

angelabbie · 22/06/2013 13:54

LIKEA that is brilliant well done. What really inspires me is the fact that your size is changing even though the weight is the same, its so weird??
As for size 10 jeans it will never ever happen for me lol. I am a 14 but bought my first pair of size 12's last week from next and I just need to shrink a tiny bit more to not have a muffin over the top!!

I have just bought some slim noodles and rice from Holland n Barrett and I have so say they look gross. Has anyone used them and if so any hints or tips please.

T
x

LikeaHurricane · 22/06/2013 14:13

Angel I have used them in spag Bol and stir fries, rinse them in cold water then just cook them in boiling water like you would pasta and mix into whatever you are having. They are not the most wonderful thing you will ever eat but they are ok and very high in fibre so will fill you up Smile
Thanks for the comments, and btw on this wol who knows where you will end up....

EagleRiderDirk · 22/06/2013 14:15

likea woohoo well done!

JB30 yeah that was probably me, sorry. Got a real thing for bounty bars. Just stocked up on a load. I feel similar about Daim, nuts are good for you right? Wink

EagleRiderDirk · 22/06/2013 14:18

angel I use them all the time on fast days, well the noodles. Tried them in chicken broth at the start and they weren't right and I wasn't sure of them. Looked up some tips and used them to make a stir fry. Brilliant. Basically its rinse them in boiling water and more in cold if you want, then dry fry them for a few minutes. Does make a big difference to the texture. Just hold your nose whilst you get them out of the bag and before you cook them.
