The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Although the middle part (about diet) is probably not relevant as they tell you to eat 5 times a day. Grin

BsshBossh · 20/06/2013 22:41

Hurrican yes agree with SoTired that New Rules is excellent (though the routine, I found, was complicated). I used Stronglifts 5x5 and devised my own routine - deadlift, squat, lunge, overhead press, bench press, bicep curl, tricep extension, plank, twist, bent over row, side bend. 2 sets each of 10 reps (aiming for lower reps, heavier weight). Seeing a personal trainer next week for advice on form and to help me conquer my fear of the "big boys and girls" weight section of my gym (a fear I'll need to overcome as I need to lift heavier than the women's section has!).

akarucker · 20/06/2013 23:21

always yes, I've moved from ADF to 5:2, and also have decided to weigh only once a week. I was losing my mojo and needed a change. It's only been a week so far, but I can already tell that on nfd I am much less inclined to overeat than I was on ADF.

I put on so much weight during my few weeks of tonsillitis/ stress/ tiredness/ CBA/ time off, so I'm not expecting to bounce back down too soon, but I have a feeling that this change is the way forward for me.

It feels strange to wake up after a nfd to have another nfd though. But maybe that's why I'm not feeling like stuffing my face as much. Having said that, tomorrow is a FD so that may have something to do with attacking the box of mini magnums tonight. I WILL NOT be buying any more. I cannot be trusted. I've given up buying chocolate for a while, but I decided they didn't count! Hmmmm....

Cupcakexprincessx · 20/06/2013 23:45

Hurricane Ah yes, suppose most people do not have the benefit of fat burning time, thankyou.

Bssh Thanks for the calculator suggestion. Do you just type the info on the first page? Where it says meals a day, I usually only have 2 but the minimum on there is 3? Plus it asks for % of protein, carb and fat, I didnt have a clue so just put auto set?

Have used it just now its very good and has put me at what I thought so that's good!

Further down it says something about that sites version of 'the worlds most accurate calorie counter' I went on to use that (it is the same sites one) and it has given me one of about 200 less? With no changes.

Thanks so much for the help

Smile
postmanpatscat · 20/06/2013 23:46

Evening all

cupcake ignore the 3500 calorie mumbo jumbo and read this

I'm sort of maintaining and still eating up to TDEE on NFDs, or over if a meal out but exercise cals accrued during the week take care of that. I haven't fasted this week because I'd lost another kg in the past week when I weighed on Sunday morning, have now bounced up 500g but I miss my weekly fast! If I have stabilised I might fast tomorrow just to counteract the chocolate and biscuits I've got through this week. Healthier choices needed, i think!

fluffy you're doing great!

bssh dinner sounds yum

Eagle you look fab. I don't believe no-one has noticed, just think they are being polite by not saying anything.

LikeaHurricane · 21/06/2013 06:10

Bssh thank you for all that advice, I'm going to do a little bit more research but think I'm just going to jump right in and join you and will learn as I go. I use 6lb weights now quite comfortably doing Jillian and Davina DVDs so it's not like I'm starting from nowhere. Mmm, will let you know how I go.
"5 stones, when you say it like that, it's incredible. Well done, you will never go back there now!

sotired thank you, I feel a visit to Amazon coming on!

Fluffy, we'll done that's fantastic Smile

BsshBossh · 21/06/2013 06:15

cupcake yes, the fat burning aspect is a key advantage this WOE has over other "diets". I keep reading that bodies burn glycogen for approx 3 hours after each meal, then head into fat burning mode utilising the stored fat on your body - imagine how much 16-24 hours of not eating can impact on our fat stores then! It's also why no snackng between meals (ie only eating every eg 5 hours) on NFD can be so effective - more fat burning opportunities.

Re Scooby calculator - I just use the one in the link I gave and only pay attention to the age, gender, height, weight, activity level. I ignore everything else and let it auto set. Interestingly, before I discovered 5:2 I lost my first 3 stones of weight using the Scooby calculator and eating its calculated 10-15% below TDEE.

BsshBossh · 21/06/2013 06:16

Hurricane good luck. Join that Mumsnet heavy lifters thread and we can swap updates and be weight training nerds in "private" Grin.

Southeastdweller · 21/06/2013 07:08

Hi everyone,

It seems that a zero cal fast with standing up for three bloody hours at the theatre and a completed mission evacuation has been great for me this week as I've lost four lbs so that's 29lbs in total since I began five months ago. It feels so good to have reached that two stones mark Smile. Heading to Westfield this afternoon for some clothes shopping and I can't wait! My remaining fatty bum bum clothes really are hanging off me now.

Off tomorrow for two days R&R in Bristol (aka the foodie capital of the West Country!). I've been trying to think what I'm going to to, food-wise, and decided that I'll just have whatever I want. My appetite has been naturally reduced anyway so I doubt I'll eat quite as much as I did on previous visits but not that fussed either way - I've hardly left London this year with one reason and another and should I gain I know I can get back on track easily.

Well done fluffy and everyone else with losses this week.

Prawntoast · 21/06/2013 07:27

morning all, 2nd week of staying the same weight down to the last 100gs but am I despondent, hell no, have lost 1.75 inches and the trousers that I couldn't get passed mid thigh in January are now too loose for me. It's still working the scales just haven't caught up yet!

Have a good weekend.

BsshBossh · 21/06/2013 07:54

Well done Prawn and a great reminder for us all to keep measuring!

Great loss Southeast and enjoy Bristol.

As yesterday's "break fast" meal was well over 500 cals (cheese and bread and lashings of butter), I will mini fast today - skip breakfast and lunch (no snacks either) and just eat a normal dinner with pudding tonight.

tryinghard2 · 21/06/2013 07:59

I'm in the 9s! by 1lb hooray! This is officially the lightest ive been since i was a teenager!

Prawntoast ive had a few 2 week the sames as well :)

LikeaHurricane · 21/06/2013 08:05

Great link Bssh. Funny, I would never have thought to look on this site for a thread for weightlifting as I'm new to mumsnet. Didn't exist when my kids were very small, they are 21 and 19 now. Cheers.
Have a good day all, off to work and its scone Friday, woohoo Grin

LikeaHurricane · 21/06/2013 08:07

Before I go, trying hard, amazing......enjoy that feeling, I can almost see that massive smile on your face, we'll done x

LikeaHurricane · 21/06/2013 08:09

Or well done!!! Stupid predictive text.
Right, gone, scone!!!

Dotty342kids · 21/06/2013 08:20

dines I've found the last couple of weeks hard. Think it was getting out of normal routine on holiday, then coming back and being ill so a couple of days of not eating followed by a couple of days of more than making up for it! However, this week has been a "normal" week and I properly managed a fast yesterday which I'm really pleased about.
I've found my NFDs harder but know that when I track on MFP it really helps with this so am back to doing that as much as possible.

itsaboat, yup, successful fast day yesterday and veggie sausages, fried onions and yorkshires definitely did the job for my dinner so will keep that in my fast day reportoire Smile

fluffypillow that's fantastic, well done and enjoy your shopping trip!

aka great to hear you feeling more positive again Smile

Have a good Friday everyone,

SoTiredAgain · 21/06/2013 08:21

Lost 2lbs this week. Total of 5lbs in 3 weeks. That's unheard of for me. Now at 8 st 7. Only 7 lbs to go.

NSV: Put my skinny jeans on, size 10, and although there is significant overhang, I don't feel as if I am about to be cut in half.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/06/2013 08:46

Oh god, the utter BLISS of going under the BIG number.

For the first time in 6 years ish I am under 200lb.

It was so amazing to delete the 200.5 on MFP and record a 199.

If anyone is thinking of buying a set of body analyser scales, Lidl have some in at £16.99. I bought a set today, and while I haven't explored it properly, it looks pretty good:

tryinghard2 · 21/06/2013 08:54

Thanks hurricane :)
Well done laurie :)

SoTiredAgain · 21/06/2013 08:58

dines fd for me today

EagleRiderDirk · 21/06/2013 09:13

Well done trying and laurie. Both very sweet SVs.

Looks like my loss is slowing down, maybe because there isn't as much of a difference between my TDEE and the 500? Lost 2.5lbs though so still good. Quite happy that the worst dropped off quickly and now I feel a lot more prepared for the rest to come off slowly.

Fast day here today and its a struggle. I woke up starving, which isn't that normal for me anymore, but some coffee is putting that aside now. My kids are driving me nuts - found DD in bed cuddling a wall hanging that fell off (and was on the other side of the room...), she'd fed 9mo DS cornflakes in the 2 seconds I turned away and because I didn't shut the kitchen gate DS nearly helped himself to the cat biscuits. Oh, and the cat just tried to make a daring escape from our bedroom window so I had to go get her and shut them, stupid again but we have new windows and we couldn't open that part before so we just didn't think.

I'm wondering about 400 calories of wine?

Goldenhandshake · 21/06/2013 10:40

FD for me today. Ate quite late last night as I was working late, it was a non-fast day so I had a lovey mixed grill at about 9pm! Blush

Woke up ravenous this morning, so not great for a FD, have had an apple and a cup of tea with a splash of skimmed milk to shut y stomach up amnow mainlining water Grin

Well done to all those sticking with it and making a success of it :)

peplum41 · 21/06/2013 12:05

Dear Plateau,
Your presence is no longer required, please vacate immediately. Leave the boobs as you found them. All wine privileges are henceforth withdrawn until you depart.

Well done laurie that cheered me up no end. Result. Smile

So tired, southeast, trying and prawntoast, also. Smile

Your victories keep me going for some reason!!

eagle most amused by your crazy house, cant blame the cat for trying to escape. You've got a good head start whatever happens next.

golden you'd think a mix grill would keep you full a bit longer. Im afraid that apple might make you really hungry later, fruit does for some reason. (well its to do with blood sugar). Try a boiled egg next time. Fruit is fine in your NFDs, keeps you regular. HTH.
