Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 20! Officially a score.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/05/2013 08:27

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Good luck saf

cupcake I used to sugar my tea. I now have it with sweetener. I quit smoking about 10 years ago. I'm not worried about a bit of sucralose.

peplum41 · 30/05/2013 11:50

I nearly posted this on a thread about camping, theyd have all been like ...what?

Had a bit of a sad time recently due to a friend dying suddenlySad, then another friend's daughter was due to get married this weekend but its suddenly off(the groom has unresolved Oedipus complex issues- to quote Sheldon from the big bang theory). So stress and tears all round, but somehow still managing 5:2, any other diet would've well been booted to the kerb, and Im not resorting to emotional eating. Im not looking for sympathy btw, just acknowledging to myself whats going on, I do think that's half the battle with the emotional eating thing, rather than stuffing a bar of fruit 'n' nut down your throat then feeling sick and guilty. Even though been festering away in the top 11s for about 6 weeks, just glad to be free of the food addiction stuff for now.

Sorry for whinge, don't want to put the thread on a bummer, actually feeling more positive these last few days and enjoying all your posts. As you were.

Emilythornesbff · 30/05/2013 11:59

Thanks peplum

CrystalDeCanter · 30/05/2013 12:13

Oh crikey Peplum you sound like you're in the midst of a tough time. Well done on being conscious of emotional eating triggers, you sound like you're managing the stress of the situations with your friends well. Have some more Flowers.

akarucker · 30/05/2013 12:34

saf you have so well and truly kicked the 11's way behind you. It's such an inspiration, because I remember how much you were struggling just a few weeks ago. Well done!

I'm hoping that after half term I will be able to kick myself back into gear, because it's all going very wrong at the moment. Why I am even buying family size packs of revels, and brining them into the house, I don't know! Feeling a bit ill with a sore throat, a teeny bit hungover, and stressed out due to kids causing mayhem this week. Roll on 1st June...

NoForkNKnife · 30/05/2013 12:39

Haven't posted for I've a week and haven't read the thread, so apologising now if I've missed major news.

Only managed one fast last week. I had a city of some kind and emotionally I wasn't able too either. I've been amaze that I haven't gained weight! And I'm consistently at the 'low' weight I was at the beginning if last week.

Back on the wagon today, and up to an hour ago I was fine. Too busy to notice it, but now DD1 is at nursery I'm really feeling it!

I'm determind to do it today though. I had two failed fasts last week and I caved at about this point in the day. But realising that since the start of the diet I've lost over 4 lbs (less than 4 weeks) I'm motivated to keep it up. I have a dear fren visiting from the states at the end of July, an I'd love to lose another 7lbs. She emigrated over 2 years ago and I'd like her not to think 'hmmm, she's piled it on'.

I've also realised I can't fast with DH at home. He's on half term but out today. He one of those annoying people that can eat a packet of biscuits a day and not gain a pound. Nothing to do with the daily intense exercise he does Hmm.

Good luck to any other fasters today.

plecofjustice · 30/05/2013 13:03

Nearly abandoned my fast before I started this morning - felt dreadful and really wanted a warming porridge to cheer me up. Glad I held out though, feeling good now!

monster54 · 30/05/2013 13:08

Thanks head in the clouds

I know I'm just super frustrated right now. On my second fast this week and its TOTM so I usually weigh in on a Friday morning same as others have mentioned naked and after first pee!!!

I've just had a lovely Sainsburys Hungarian Goulash a whole pot 200cals, I've found that I can't do all day fasts. I have 2 portions of soup lunch and dinner and always try to have a 16 hour window. Going all day just makes me want to binge in the evening and then I eat way over my 500cals!!! This way I feel more in control!

I agree with everyone else saf ask your friend she will be more than happy to help!!

monster54 · 30/05/2013 13:09

Well done pofj!!

Emilythornesbff · 30/05/2013 13:16

Well done pleco
Hello fellow fasters.
I've had a white coffee and a marmite drink.
I made a chocolate cake this morning for guests. Ut even managed to not lick the spoon. Grin
Watching DS tuck into breadsticks and humus. Envy

swallowedAfly · 30/05/2013 13:28

sorry peplum - it is important to acknowledge what''s going on, i agree. emotional eating is kind of about stuffing the emotions down so acknowledging them and letting them be felt has gotta help right?

aka definitely it's easier out of school holidays isn't it? and yes, 11's seem well and truly behind me thankfully.

nofork it sounds like you're in a similar phase to me of weight stability (for once). think sometimes a little break or easier period is just what the body needs to settle so maybe last week did you good.

i've just broken my fast with 3 eggs, some mackerel and a few mushrooms all fried in olive oil. this is NF and pack the nutrients in day. the plan is to eat very nutritionally on nfds so i can get away with ADF without being malnourished. minimal carbs and good proteins ideally.

Bramblesinafield · 30/05/2013 14:45

Hello fasters. Just on a cup of black coffee and watching tonight's meal defrost! Keeping busy.
NSV, got into a white stuff size 10 skirt - bit snug, but considering I was a 14 at the start and now am comfy in a 12 it was a boost. I don't want to go smaller than a 12, just to be comfy. I've also had to buy smaller knickers as I've found them starting to slip as I walk around! Final NSV was buying a smaller belt as the ones I already had were very flappy and had run out of holes (I had made more in them).
Hoping that being strict with myself will kick me off from plateau, but realistically that will start once I'm back from my trip to Paris and get going again. One more fast day on Mon before I go (cheeeeese and wine...)

No snacking today. Repeats mantra.

ceebeegeebies · 30/05/2013 15:03

Brambles wow, a size 14 to a size 10 - inspirational Smile

Saf ask your friend, I am sure she would be willing to help. I know I would be in those circumstances.

Peplum sorry you are going through tough times but well done on tackling the overeating Flowers

Well, despite my pessimism this morning about fasting whilst at home with DS1, it hasn't been too bad Wink I did feel like caving in and taking DS1 to McD's as a treat but managed to talk myself out of that Grin I am now over halfway through so I am not going to cave in now...just keep thinking about the sausage butty I can have at work tomorrow if I stick to the fasting today Wink

ceebeegeebies · 30/05/2013 15:38

has anyone got that link handy about side effects of this which explains about feeling cold etc?

I am sat here with the heating on and covered in a blanket and am still shivering Sad thought if I could read about why it is happening it might cheer me up Wink

Bramblesinafield · 30/05/2013 16:07

That would be handy ceebee- I felt like I was flying earlier and really, it can't be low blood sugars as there is enough of me left for my body to feed on! (Son has t1 diabetes, tempted to prick my finger to check my blood sugar!).

You are very kind re size. I'm sure it is a very generous ten, although what kick started me into this woe was realizing I had almost 'given up' on myself - 14s were getting really tight and I was about to shop for a 16, thinking, 'it doesn't matter, I can let it all go now and sink into middle age happily'. Gave myself a good kick up the bum for thinking that way!

Bramblesinafield · 30/05/2013 16:08

Keep going ceebee, you're right, over half way through and all that effort will be worth it. I have another couple of hours before I break my fast, keeping busy is the only way to do it!

Emilythornesbff · 30/05/2013 16:53

So I'm fasting and I don't a tally feel hungry.
Nothing to eat since last night's supper and I'll have some soup in a couple of hours (otherwise I'm worried I'll go overboard tomorrow).
Feel very tired though. But that's night feeding sleep deprivation.

somewherebecomingrain · 30/05/2013 17:19

Hello planning my first fast on Monday. Am breast feeding so a m going to aim for 1100 cals rather than 500. Anyone else bf?

Emilythornesbff · 30/05/2013 17:23

Hi somewhere
I'm breastfeeding too.
Babythorne is four months old.

mehefin · 30/05/2013 17:37

Peplum turning to Sheldon for wisdom is always a good thing !
Good to hear from you again but sorry things have been tough for you.

Emilythornesbff · 30/05/2013 18:35

Ahhhh. Turned out I ^was^ hungry.
Shelved the soup and had loads of leaves with a little cold chicken and mozarella.
Everyone else is having pizza Envy
Apart from dd of course, who is ebf Grin

plecofjustice · 30/05/2013 19:34

Just added up my calories for the day and came in at 400, even though I feel stuffed to the gills and haven't had dinner yet! Must re-calculate, but sure I'm right - lots and lots of veg eaten though!

MelanieCheeks · 30/05/2013 19:35

I would normally fast on Thursdays, but knew I had a lunch event today at work. So I'm going to try a 2pm-2pm fast for a change. First problem is logging it on MFP! I have my calories set to maintenance, so on non-fast days that's my target, and on fast days I work out what I'm having to stay under 500. But now I've got to do mental subtractions and calculations over 2 days! Hmmmm.

Dinner tonight is the leftover bolognese with zero noodles I had on my earlier fast day. I'll skip breakfast tomorrow, get through the morning on Bovril and miso, and then allow myself something like cheese and crackers after 2. And have something yummy with a glass of wine or 3 on a Friday evening.

Meanwhile, I've been going through my holiday clothes (Disneyland Paris at end of June!) and creating a growing pile of things that are too big and floppity. I have another dieting friend who's gone from a 14/16 to a 12ish, so she's standing by to receive all my surplus.

somewherebecomingrain · 30/05/2013 19:47

Ah emily what cals do you allow yourself?

I should also add I'm doing it with my 75-year old mother in law who is living with us! Anyone else 75?
