Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 20! Officially a score.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/05/2013 08:27

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

saf I'd really hate to ask anyone but then stupidly I wouldn't hesitate to do it for someone else.

hitc that's my routine too, naked and after pee Grin

fluffypillow · 29/05/2013 22:00

saf I've looked after my childrens friends before for similar reasons, and was happy to do it. Don't worry about it, just ask. Most people would be happy to help, I'm sure. Hope all goes well with the op Smile

Well, after a flying start................I've stalled Sad actually, worse that that, I've gained 1lb this week Sad . Not sure If I need to change anything? or if things will start moving again naturally. I lost 11lbs in the first 4 weeks, then it just stopped suddenly, even though I have not done anything different. Very frustrating.

I don't mind if the losses slow down alot now, as I know I lost a large amount in a short space of time, but I don't want to start gaining again Confused

I am 5' 6" and weigh 12st 7lb. I am eating 5oo cals on FD and 2000 calls on NFD. Is that too much?

I am really enjoying this WOE, and have every intention of this being a WOL for me from now on. I love the feeling of control I have now. I am making better choices, and no longer over eating. I don't snack anymore, just eat three good meals, and haven't wanted chocolate for 5 weeks now (massive change for me!) I don't even eat after my dinner at 5pm at all. My interest in food had changed drastically. So why have the scales stuck? Confused

Oh, I'm such a whinger, sorry Blush Just feel really fed up today Sad Any advice appreciated Smile

bugsyburge · 29/05/2013 22:20

oh dear, day 2 being back on the wagon but in reality I havent even got on the wagon yet.... tried to fast yday but ended up around 1000kcal, tried to fast today but a situation out of my control left me at 1000kcal.... upshot is that atleast I'm not overeating but now I'm concerned that I've lost the ability to fast
help!!!!

fastyspeedyfast · 29/05/2013 22:40

Okay, almost to the end of the fast day - my first with only one day's break between. I will not be doing that again if I can help it! Much harder than my usual mon/thurs routine. But o well, almost over and tomorrow I can eat.

fluffypillow I don't know why the scales have stalled, but 11 pounds in 4 weeks is dramatic weight loss, and you're unlikely to keep that up. So just keep plodding on - don't worry about this week. I find it almost impossible to know if I have put on a a bit in any given week as my weight does fluctuate with 5:2. Your trend is still 11 pounds down in 5 weeks! Don't despair. Smile

Cupcakexprincessx · 29/05/2013 22:42

Thanks all for replies.

Bugsy Don't worry about not being able to fast this week. It is just that you may not be in the mindset of it. It is much better to give yourself a little break when your heart is not in it, than to force on and beat yourself up about it, because then you may resent it.

Start fresh. You can do it! :D

fluffypillow · 29/05/2013 22:52

Thank you fasty You are right. I think I am just panicking because I feel like I might be doing something wrong now. I am so pleased with the weight I've lost so far, frightened I am going to gain again.

I thnk I should stop weighing myself ten times a day every day.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 30/05/2013 00:27

Fluffy, I also had a really good loss in the first two weeks and then stalled and whined about it endlessly.

And then! This morning! I stepped on the scales, and I have lost 4lb. !!!!! I don't know how this can be, and I suspect some of it is just being a bit dehydrated and I'll bounce back up, but. 4lb!!!!!! I am at my intermediate goal weight, much earlier than I thought I would be.

So, they're all right; a stall is just your body saving up the weight loss.

CrystalDeCanter · 30/05/2013 03:23

Tortoise 4lbs! That's fabulous, well done. What about your dh is he also plummeting?

Aftereights your post was great to read, as are everyone's who's managing to shift the kilos/llbs/stones etc. I definitely feel less like stuffing myself on my NFDs, I'm finding I quite like feeling a bit hungry rather than uncomfortably full.

Saf, please ask your friend for the help you need, if you can't talk to your mum about it that is. Like the others I would be delighted to help a friend out in those circs. I had a chum who had the same surgery, her life was transformed afterwards, no more backache, found buying clothes so much easier, exercise was much easier. Best wishes that you get everything sorted.

Endofmyfeather · 30/05/2013 04:05

Intervention required...I've just eaten almost a full family size bag of crisps - after a perfect 500 cal fast day!! Can I sue the food industry for making such nice salt and vinegar crisps in such a bloody big bag?!

CrystalDeCanter · 30/05/2013 05:22

PUT THE CRISPS DOWN!

Endofmyfeather · 30/05/2013 06:20

Phew, thanks Crystal! Urgh I feel so sick now, don't know what came over me. Haven't done something like that since starting this woe in Feb! (Enjoyed it though! Wink - half the problem!)

frenchfancy · 30/05/2013 06:26

SAF tell your Mum. Imagine how you would feel if one of your children had major surgery and you didn't know about it. But I agree with others I'm sure your friend would help too.

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 30/05/2013 06:43

Estoy I feel exactly the same, I'm at 72 and have been for a month or so, would like to get under 70, which just feels ridiculous as I haven't been anywhere near this weight for about 10 years!!

A question for the experts - do you still fast when you're ill? I've woken up this morning feeling rotten - bad cold and a throat of razor blades. Was supposed to fast today but not sure whether it'll doe any good?

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 30/05/2013 06:46

Whoops just realised I answered someone from the first page of the thread Blush

fluffypillow · 30/05/2013 06:50

Thank you tortoise Smile 4lbs????!!!!! great! You have given me new hope now. Well done for reaching your intermediate goal weight, fantastic news Smile

endofmyfeather just woke up ready to start my fast, now all I can think about is salt and vinegar crisps............mmmm salt and vinegar crisps Grin (I don't even like crisps Grin )

12th fast today. Going to keep busy as usual, but in a different way, as the children are at home from school. Two youngest have Dentist appt, and older Ds has friend for sleepover, this will involve treats and pizza for dinner, not ideal to be around temptation like that, but I'll just have to dig deep and find some extra will power. Quorn chilli and rice with veggies for me, I think.

I find fasting days easier when the children are at school. We are out of routine at the moment. I guess it's a trial run for the 6 weeks stretch coming up soon Confused

Good luck to all fellow fasters today, hope it's a good one!

Prawntoast · 30/05/2013 06:51

whoah, I don't fast when ill, I just eat sensibly, I find my appetite is usually smaller when ill and I want more drinks.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 30/05/2013 07:02

4lbs, I know, right? I felt like running around the house shouting I'M SIXTY KILOS but I feared it would give the children a complex.

I love salt and vinegar crisps. I'm pretty sure that DH and my respective paunches are about 90% salt and vinegar crisp.

My boss has just informed me that the bars of Toblerone in the office fridge are up for grabs. Okay then!

CrystalDeCanter · 30/05/2013 07:30

I don't understand Salt & Vinegar Crisps. They make my mouth and WHOLE INSIDES shrivel up like a raisin. Cheese 'n' Onion on the other hand . . .

EagleRiderDirk · 30/05/2013 07:40

Mm salt and vinegar crisis Envy

EagleRiderDirk · 30/05/2013 07:41

Crisps even Blush

Bramblesinafield · 30/05/2013 08:03

I love them too. But it's a fast day - much needed as I've jumped up 3.5lbs from target! Giant curry last night though, so its just a curry baby.

Need to regain my fasting mojo, so will be making sure I drink a lot of fluids ofay.

BetsyBell · 30/05/2013 08:26

tortoise lovely news, well done :)

[ignores crisps talk with fingers in ears, fails to not think about the 1 packet of cheese and onion McCoys in the cupboard nobody else in the house knows about]

My one measly fast day this week, coupled with half-term/miserable weather related lack of exercise will do nothing to stop the inevitable increases this week. I'm going away for what usually promises a fairly indulgent weekend tomorrow. In theory I should fast today, but I don't want to [blows mental raspberry]. The cold that's been promising to turn up for ages has shown it's snotty face and will power is weak. Good news is I feel less grumpy now at least. :)

Oh and I'm planning loads of baking today as I need to take tasty things for our hosts and I will not be denied the opportunity to lick the spoon!

I will return revived and prepared for a great week back on the wagon I hope Grin

ceebeegeebies · 30/05/2013 08:28

Aaah best laid plans and all...FD for me today which was ok as I was at work and in meetings so busy but just turned up at school to drop DS1 off at holiday club to find it all locked up and no-one there Shock so am now facing a day at home instead and not sure I have the willpower to fast at home!!

To say I am a bit Angry would be an understatement!!!

swallowedAfly · 30/05/2013 09:20

french i never even told my mother i was pregnant till i was 6 months gone. i hope to god my child wouldn't dream of not telling me if they were having surgery as i won't give them reason to dread telling me anything. i feel too wobbly and nervous about doing this to engage with someone telling me how stupid it is and throwing all their negativity at me. my mum isn't the typical picture inspired by the word 'mum' iyswim.

thanks for everyone's encouragement and advice.

10.8.4 this morning - 1.6lbs down for yesterdays fast and i expect it will be down a bit more tomorrow morning if i don't go mad today as my fast isn't over really as i don't eat early in the day anyway.

fluffy seriously don't worry about it. i did very similar with the big loss then stall and bounce a bit awhile. i think the body adjusts to the new weight and stabilises it before moving on again ime. you'll soon see 11 something Smile

how bizarre ceebee! wonder what that's about?

postmanpatscat · 30/05/2013 11:07

well done tortoise fab news! I think you absolutely should run round the house shouting, I remember how I felt when I reached 60.

My fast day and gym visit paid off, weighed in this morning at a new low of 53.9 despite three days of eating junk well over TDEE. Maybe there is something to that kick start your metabolism by eating more theory after all.
