GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/05/2013 08:27

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

1st fast of the week, found it quite tough, usually not too bad but can eat tomorrow. Glad you are enjoying the Hairy Dieters cookbook Lexington, I was raving about it a few days ago, haven't found a recipe I don't like yet. OH has started cooking from it as none of the recipes are particularly complicated.

Itsaboatjack · 29/05/2013 00:07

First fast of the week done. Not too bad after a carb heavy weekend, had some cravings in the evening but a cup of tea got me through them.

I am at a work team building day tomorrow which will have bacon butties when we arrive, some kind of buffet lunch then a bar-b-que in the evening with plenty of alcohol to wash it all down with. Not really sure yet how I'm going to tackle it, just keep thinking mindful eating I think, that and not stand too close to the buffet table so it's not too easy just to pick at it.

How are those that are doing the squat challenge getting on? I'm half way through now, day 15 today, 140 squats done.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 29/05/2013 00:21

Cupcake, what I'm finding about NFDs where I know I want a blow-out in the evening is, because I'm now more used to fasting, I can much more easily stay very low during the day. Thursdays are my indulgent blow-out evenings, so this week I did a very controlled day; low cal cupasoup for breakfast, grilled chicken salad for lunch, meaning that by dinnertime I was very hungry but I'd also only had 400 cals all day, so I had oodles left for dinner. Your Chinese takeaway can't be more than 1200, surely? I understand you don't want to have to calorie count all the time, but you don't have to; just eat sparingly on a day where you want an indulgent dinner, and that won't feel nearly as daunting once you're used to fasting.

Betsy I hope you weren't offended by my question! And that you feel much better soon. It must be a computer virus; I feel all sorts of blech today myself, and considering whether to just have a lowish-cal day instead of a fast. But on the other hand, I want this bastard weight to shift! I do understand the people saying 'what's the rush' but it's not how long it takes, it's whether it will work at all. I haven't lost anything in two weeks, which is a pretty early time in the process to stall, given that I'm only 4.5 weeks in - so my paranoid brain is saying 'maybe I'll never get under this BMI, even doing 5:2'. And I don't want to have to settle for maintenance at this weight, and I don't want to have to go more extreme than 5:2 for the rest of my life, and waaaaaaaah.

(DH did gently suggest this morning that perhaps AF was due on...)

CrystalDeCanter · 29/05/2013 03:01

G'day all, well done those that are losing, STICK WITH IT to those that are stalling, don't-obsess-about-food to those fasting (me).

It's fast no 4 for me, 11.30am and I'm feeling ravenous peckish. I need to distract myself from thinking about food.

I set myself a "goal" on Runkeeper this morning - lose 7kgs - and managed to tweet it to all my followers Blush. Anyone else use Runkeeper goals? I'm so tempted by the fitbit but can't really afford more gadgets atm.

EagleRiderDirk · 29/05/2013 06:58

cupcake I used mfp to calculate the totals or at least used similar values. I split the giant takeaway into 2 large dinners. Zing chicken (like tikka), chilli rice, Bombay potatoes and 3 popadoms a time. Oh And 2 onion bhaji. Mfp said 901 calories. MfP tends to be quite good I find. So a big takeout like that could leave you over 700 for the rest of the day. Id just make sure on those days I ate a low cal brekkie and lunch.

Prawntoast · 29/05/2013 07:01

Itsaboat I'm up to 90 on the squat challenge, just wondering what you do when you get to the 250, keep doing them at that rate I guess, would be a shame to lose the muscle tone!

EagleRiderDirk · 29/05/2013 07:01

FD yesterday, I finally got the shivers. Soooooo cold even bundled under duvet. Kept trying to repeat 'its the body burning fat, this is what you want'

EagleRiderDirk · 29/05/2013 07:02

prawn I was wondering the same thing myself

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 29/05/2013 07:05

3.30pm, doing better than I ever have before in that I just had a skim milk coffee and that was the first calorie intake all day.

Discovered yesterday that one of my favourite things to make, pea & ham soup, is 200 cals a bowl. I'm planning a bowl before fencing tonight, and a second bowl after it. Yum yum yum yum.

Prawntoast · 29/05/2013 07:06

I think I saw somewhere that there was an ab crunch challenge but I don't do those because of my back, I may invent my own press up challenge but still keeping doing the squats.

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 29/05/2013 07:51

Not posted for ages but wanted to say I'm still on 5:2. I started end of July weighed in at 14&half stone. Official weigh in was Monday & I came in at 10.9 stone so almost 4 stone of loss. I've occasional done 4:3 if I've been able to.

Biggest advice I can give is don't give up on your first fail. Carry on even if you don't lose for a few weeks - that often happens with me but then I sort of do a catch up & lose a few lbs a go.

It's second nature to me now to fast, but I do take 'time out' if I go on holiday. Good luck.

swallowedAfly · 29/05/2013 08:32

well done aftereights that's a really huge achievement and it is so nice to hear from people who have been doing this long term and have stuck with it and seen great results Smile wow!

i've done nearly 4 months now and have lost about 19/20lbs. i've had long stalls from time to time and rapid loss from time to time. at the minute i'm holding steady so i presume i'm eating the right amount for me itms and i take it as a good sign that my body is really adjusting to this weight and then it will move on again.

i'd like to lose another stone - i'd like to lose more than that but i find it hard to imagine managing that and it being sustainable. if i was being total ideal world land 9st is really good on me and my body 'feels' right and it's the point where the weight has come off evenly and i'm an all over nice size. it seems a very long way away though. another stone would take me to 9st10 which in itself sounds like miracle land at the moment. we shall see.

laurie presumably you didn't put the weight on overnight so you're not going to lose it overnight either and the longer you take losing it the more real the changes you make itms - you really do learn to be slimmer and eat slimmer etc.

whoever asked about the pill - yes the pill makes you put on weight. all hormonal contraceptives tend to.

BetsyBell · 29/05/2013 09:07

Aftereights Nice to hear from you, congratulations on 4 stone! :) I agree - weight loss stalls are usually followed by a sudden big loss.

Tortoise Not offended but the concept filled me with the horror! You're not the only person not to have lost in the first couple of weeks but you will, I'm sure of it. It sounds like you're having a great fast day despite the blech and the soup sounds lovely.

silverbeetle · 29/05/2013 09:09

aftereights that's brilliant, so motivating and it really helps to know not to give up when you have a few weeks (or more) of not losing. You are inspirational Smile

EagleRiderDirk · 29/05/2013 09:20

aftereights fantastic achievement. I was a little heavier when I started but so nice to see I could be down at a decent weight in under a year! I'm going to have to remember I'm on this for life now and its not a race and any plateaus are just temporary!

Bramblesinafield · 29/05/2013 09:23

Morning, congratulations on continuing loss. Nfd for me today. Fd tomorrow. Finding it tricky to do as I'm back to feeling roaring hungry all the time! Planning a long dog walk tomorrow to keep me busy and will make sure I drink lots of fizzy mineral water, which fills. Now I'm around target (bouncing up to a couple of lbs above, so want to drop a bit) I'm finding continuing loss hard, I reckon my body knows what's right!

However, I can now take off the trousers I wore regularly at the start of the fast without doing the buttons. Yesterday I had them on and had to keep my hand in the pocket whilst walking to the shop as they were falling off - must get my belt out. I have bought smaller ones too :D

monster54 · 29/05/2013 09:48

Well successful fast yesterday. Which was relatively easy.

I have a NFD today and meals are all planned out. So there should be NO SNACKING....and I should be well withn my TDEE, leave me a few extra cals for indulgence at the weekend.

I did have a sneaky weigh in this morning and I was surprised that I was only 2 pounds above my sticking point....

See what the rest of the week holds!

Well done aftereights really is inspirational to keep us stallers going!!

swallowedAfly · 29/05/2013 09:57

ok i have major motivation now.

my surgery date for breast reduction has just come through and it's the 7th June. the lower my weight when i have the surgery the better the results will be as i won't be losing as much afterwards itms.

i have 9 days. presumably 9 days of ADF would be my best bet? aargh! i am nervous as hell. i've wanted this for years but it's still scary.

any ideas for a bit of rapid weight loss? obviously a terrible idea for long term and i'll go back to my usual ease afterwards but i could really do with dropping as much as i can in 9 days. no carbs? ouch. what to do? any help gratefully received.

monster54 · 29/05/2013 09:59

Ekkk how exciting saf you seem to have done so well recently so I would just tweak what your already doing!!!

WE all know the pits falls of committing to something that it is too difficult to maintain, thats why were are here!!

So think carefully about the next 9 days, how much will power and motivation you have and hit it hard!!!!

mttum · 29/05/2013 10:02

saf - cabbage soup diet? 7 days and horribly boring but I lost 10 lb in that time. I guess nothing is going to lose you 10 lb of fat in that time, but if it's just weight loss you're after...

frenchfancy · 29/05/2013 10:08

Well done aftereights great to hear from you.

Scary stuff SAF but I'm sure you won't regret it. Don't forget the breast reduction itself will cause weight loss.

swallowedAfly · 29/05/2013 10:15

thanks.

i'm going to do a fast on just water, black coffee and marmite drink today.

if this can't motivate me nothing can!

Peacocklady · 29/05/2013 10:21

Hi everyone! I'm new. I did my first fast day yesterday successfully. I like the idea of this because you can look forward to eating on normal days but at the same time keeping in mind the overall goals.
I feel a bit hungover today is that normal after a fast? I drank quite a lot yesterday- tea, bouillon but I feel a bit headachy.
So far today I've had tea and poached egg on toast.

BetsyBell · 29/05/2013 10:36

saf Wow, apparently it changes people's lives having that surgery; fantastic, daunting, exciting and scary all at the same time. I understand that you want to be as slim as possible but presumably you also need to be as healthy as possible to get through the surgery and recovery process? I suppose my advice would be to cut out all the crap calories and focus on veg, salad, fruit and protein on NFDs, so yeah, low carb it baby!

ChesterDrawers · 29/05/2013 10:49

Well yesterday was a spectacular fast fail, ending with a chippy tea, a bottle of red wine and a family bag of Maltesers Blush so slightly over 500 cals at my estimation Grin BUT today my period has arrived so at least I can justify it a little bit.

Anyway, trying again today and so far, so good, one black decaf and lots of water so far. Prawn stir fry for tea.
