Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

cupcake my Tdee is far higher than yours but I struggle to get to your Tdee quite often. I was only about 150 cals over yours yesterday when i had a large brownie, anIndian takeaway and a skinny latte. 1690 will be plenty and there's alwasys a few switches you can make to save calories (weight watchers bread is my massive calorie saver)

awomanchanging · 28/05/2013 14:27

Fast day didnt turn out so well. Made it more than half the day but DH wanted to go out so I treated him as I told him one day a week he gets where we can go out and 'be normal' since he is not trying to lose weight. So today is my new fast day. Changing my next fast day to Friday. Been stuck at 180 for months and really ready to be stuck at 170. This WOL is so easy for me and really want it to work. So with a proper 5:2 week I will see what my results are next sat and reevaluate from there

On a side note, will be going to the docs sometime soon as I've been feeling lethargic etc and displaying symptoms of pregnancy and want to make sure I'm not fighting a losing battle trying to lose weight when my body wants to maintain or gain.

LaurieFairyCake · 28/05/2013 14:28

Right, I now have to accept the reality that I've entered a bastarding stall as I've bounced up and down the same pound for 4 weeks.

I religiously count on MFP. And I still have at least 4 stone to lose so its not like I've just got a few pounds to go Hmm

But I am persevering, still enjoying it, still finding it easy enough, still happy with the health benefits.

I am hoping not to rival TIP's stall - was that 12 weeks ? Longer?

awomanchanging · 28/05/2013 14:39

Wow vieenrose that gives me hope. Maybe weekly weigh ins are daunting. I think I will give calorie counting and weekly weigh ins a bit of a rest. I'm so obsessed with the numbers that if numbers say I should have lost a pound and I didnt its just sooo stressful. You've inspired me to stay off the scale until next Sat. I thought about not counting calories for the same time period. I'd love to be free from logging as I dont plan on logging the rest of my life. I'll be eating relatively the same foods but how do you all make sure youre eating correctly on FD? Do you log on FD and not log on NFD? I think I'd do that.

EagleRiderDirk · 28/05/2013 14:40

Laurie have you recalculated your Tdee/goals on Mfp? You probably have but if not its worth a shot.

LaurieFairyCake · 28/05/2013 14:46

I hadn't eagle - done it now and it is less - now 1953. I will give that a go - I'm a bit weird though, one day last week I only ate 1300 calories, the next 2400.

My main aim is to be 3500 under at the end of the week on MFP to get that magic pound loss. And I just hit it every week.

I'm going to readjust the TDEE and see if it helps focus me Smile

Thanks.

monster54 · 28/05/2013 14:51

Good luck bugsy first one back will be the hardest!!

monster54 · 28/05/2013 14:52

Same here laurie 4 weeks and the same 1.5lbs for me.

I had the weekend off and throughly enjoyed myself...

Lets hope our stall is over soon and not the massive 12 weeks TIP hit!!!

BsshBossh · 28/05/2013 16:52

Quite a few of you struggling fasting with illness and half term. Go easy on yourselves. Remember to take a longterm view. I can't fast this week at all due to outtings, family things, half term... But no biggie. I will continue to try to skip breakfast and no snacks (which is really working well for me) between meals. Won't bother weighing myself. Good luck everyone!

BsshBossh · 28/05/2013 17:14

laurie, monster I had a 4 month stall last year. It is why I nod wisely whilst saying "Take the longterm view" Smile. Also, "Enjoy the journey". Look at me - 5 stones lost and now maintaining. You'll get there, but only if you keep at it!

BetsyBell · 28/05/2013 17:44

Also, what's the hurry? We're all planning on using 5:2 to maintain right? So what's the difference? I've completely surpassed my original expectation so in theory I could be maintaining now (which I actually am at the moment!) but I've set myself a new goal. It could easily take a year for me to get there but it makes no odds as nothing will change when I'm maintaining, this WOE will simply give me a bit more leeway for holidays and sometimes I might be able to do 6:1.

frenchfancy · 28/05/2013 18:45

I need to tell DH that. We were due to go our for lunch today (a NFD) but 2 DCs are ill so we had to cancel. We are busy tomorrow (and there is no school for DD2 and DD3) so we could go Thursday, except that Thursday is our fast day so DH says we can't go for lunch. Given that we are both on maintenance now I'm happy to do 6:1 this week but DH wants to stick with routine.

swallowedAfly · 28/05/2013 19:30

go out with a friend instead then ff!

still sat at 10.10 today. relieved that a long weekend of indulgences hasn't destabilised things. still no fast this week.

"I'm sorry but I can't seem to keep up with the threads but I wanted to share my good news. Started 5:2 at the beginning of march and as of last Friday have now lost a stone. I started at over 16 stone. I had lost hope after failing at every diet I tried but this works brilliantly for me.

I'm strict with the 500 calories for two days and then just eat what I want to eat the rest of the time. I try to be mindful on NFD but I do blow out sometimes.

It does work.

I also have other benefits. I've stopped having aches in my ankles and I did my first run in two years on Saturday. I feel like I'm in control on this diet....at last."

Brilliant stuff, EB!

I think that's the word that sums up this WOL - 'Control'!

frenchfancy · 28/05/2013 19:43

Not a bad idea SAF, but the lunch is our "date night" as we never get out in the evenings. I've convinced him we can do a mini-fast on Saturday instead. We are both working so it won't be a hardship. So we are doing lunch on Thursday Grin .

bsshhh and besty you guys are so right. I know I'm in this for the long term. I suppose it's fear, fear that this wol is not going to work anymore?

I'm not happy where I am I've still got a way to go! I just don't have much energy or time to committ to anything else other than 5:2. I've had a blow out all weekend, which I totally enjoyed. I'm coming back to this week fresh. Simple 5:2 and counting on mpf NFD!

swallowedAfly · 28/05/2013 20:44

monster it really does just happen. i seemed to spend ages stuck around 11st to 11.2 and then suddenly it was coming off again with seemingly no real change to my eating. for me, and seemingly for quite a few of us on here, there's a time of weight loss then a stall for a while and much moaning and stamping and then suddenly you have a weight loss patch again.

my gripe is that my breasts haven't gone down in size at all. am virtually crying with pain this evening from trying to wear a softer bra today thinking that would help but actually it just means less support and therefore more weight tugging on my shoulders. breast reduction surgery is on the horizon as clearly weight loss doesn't put a dent in them.

LaurieFairyCake · 28/05/2013 21:48

The rush is I'm still fat as fuck Grin

14 and a half bloody stone!

Would never think of stopping though, this is the end of the road for me - I know in my soul it works. I just need to wait for it to happen.

Stalls are an inconvenience. But I will still be 10 stone in a year. (Hopefully)

Cupcakexprincessx · 28/05/2013 21:54

Thanks for replies.

By the way Eagle and Ponygirl You both agreed that you would find my tdee of 1690 easy. I think my problem is that some meals such as chinese takeaway which I adore, I always put the calorie count very high for that one meal which leaves me little for the whole day before it. One of you mentioned an indian takeaway? What did you count that as (ie calories)?

Plus Is anyone on the microgynon contraceptive pill? If anyone is has it made you gain weight? Just had a thought, since Ive been on it my weight is harder to get off.

Does anyone know of any contraceptives that do not make you gain weight?

LexingtonBear · 28/05/2013 22:13

Off to bed after a relatively straightforward fast - a relief after such an indulgent weekend, thought I'd find it much harder. Wanted to thank whoever it was a few threads back (it was probably only a week ago but these threads move so fast - wish my weight did too Grin) who recommended the Hairy Dieters book. Never seen them on tv and was a bit sceptical but it was on special offer and so I bought it. Have been really impressed with everything I've made from it (speaking as someone who thinks they love cooking but in reality finds it very hard to follow a recipe rather than go off piste, is very short on time and very easily distracted by m&s ready meals). So, thanks - and highly recommended by me in turn.

ceebeegeebies · 28/05/2013 22:29

Evening Smile

Have just completed fast no 13 and, for the first time, have found it easy Shock never thought that would be the case but I think I may have turned the corner. Still wouldn't say it is enjoyable (would much rather be scoffing chocolate and cake Wink ) but today has not been the torture that previous fasts have been!

I am another one who doesn't weigh myself very often - I am now in week 7 of this WOE and I have only weighed myself once about 3 weeks in. Have had too many scale-related disappointments over the years so I have a proper dislike of them...much prefer going on NSVs and I have had plenty of those over the last few weeks Smile I don't have any scales in the house so have to use the ones at the gym which cost 70p so that is an incentive not to weigh myself Wink

Love reading all the success stories on here (even the slow ones Wink )...I am in no rush tbh. It is about 12 weeks to my hols so if I manage to lose a stone by then, I would be happy. I can then work on the next stone leading up to Christmas which is my target...size 12 by Christmas Smile

postmanpatscat · 28/05/2013 22:39

well done lavie

cupcake my TDEE is only 1600. I have spent two days away from home and have gone over both days. At home I eat carefully and I stay close to TDEE but it is fair to say there is not much room for indulgence other than by burning cals through exercise.

BetsyBell · 28/05/2013 22:41

Ha! Fair enough Laurie Grin! You'll get there though... I had some massive stalls last year but it all kick starts again eventually, and then you get another stall... Wink

A successful fast day for me in the end after my grumpy start - I've gone over a bit but it was with fruit so some extra nutrition along with the calories. I did some squats too :)
