GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/05/2013 08:27

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Poor betsy
Is it worth focussing on the "healing" benefits of a fast today?
If it doesn't happen though it's not the end of the world is it? Long term goals and all that.
Hope you're feeling better soon.

I've been thinking about the no snacking club Grin. Not sure how realistic it is to ^never^ snack. I currently feel that "conscious" eating is the key. So not eating unless I am hungry and really enjoy the food, whether it's a meal or a snack.
Stealth foods are bad.

Dotty342kids · 28/05/2013 09:28

Last post today for a week or so whilst we're on hols. Seem to have put 3lbs on overnight - god knows how that happened!
Just praying that I am still under the dreaded "11s" when I return!

Have a good week everyone and headintheclouds, itsaboatjack and swallowedafly I'm looking forward to hearing how you've all got on whilst I've been away Smile

BetsyBell · 28/05/2013 09:34

Thanks Emily Smile it helps to type out these feelings.

I timed no snacking a bit badly I think as I've been feeling a bit odd for the last week or so. But I did find that no snacking just made me crave bad snacks - if I'm allowed to eat raw nuts & fruits then I'm not so bothered about the chocolate and salty stuff! So, an interesting challenge but not a WOL for me. I'd rather stay in the 'mindful eating' zone which has worked well for me for the last 20 months. 5:2 works so well alongside that mindset and counteracts these periods when I want to overeat or want to move around less and helps me lose weight easily when I'm in an energetic mode.

I've often attributed this lethargic feeling with eating sugar and given that I barely ate any last week it's made me realise that it's not that. I imagine it's hormonal, it's certainly cyclical. If I could be bothered I'd trawl through my food diary to find any patterns, but I really can't be arsed! Maybe when I've got my pep back.

I'm pleased to see that a fish pie in the fridge, which must be eaten today, is 400 calories for a portion which means I can fast and eat it today :) It's all feeling a little more possible now I've had some coffee Smile

BetsyBell · 28/05/2013 09:35

Dotty Have a wonderful holiday, don't worry about the weight, you know you can lose it all again when you get back x

ChesterDrawers · 28/05/2013 09:49

First of my two consecutive fast days this week. Not feeing in the mood as I am due on, so hungry and hormonal - not a great combination.

Not been on the scales since last week so no idea how much I have gained but feels like its about two stone or thereabouts.

Urrrrghhhh, hoping a day off eating will make me feel a bit more normal.

silverbeetle · 28/05/2013 09:53

I know the feeling Betsy definitely sounds like you are under the weather, poor you and it's so hard to stay focused when you feel like that. Keep busy today and look forward to that fish pie tonight it sounds yummy. It's a good idea to experiment and try different things even if you just find out it's not for you.

Yesterday I finished my antibiotics and also fasted, took your advice and bought some yakult Flowers. Jumped on the scales this morning and was 1.4 lbs down so at least it's going in the right direction again but am not back to where I was and still feel a bit bloated and lethargic. I expect it will probably take a week for the old body to get back to normal - sigh!

We can do it Smile

Have a great holiday Dotty Envy

postmanpatscat · 28/05/2013 10:00

I'll be counting down til next fast day at this rate...breakfasts in B&B, dinner out last night, jam doughnut and hot chocolate in a cafe and no exercise at all! Well done to those who have made the most of the weekend and not gained (or even lost some), I won't be one of them!

This is why I started the weekend 2lbs under my goal weight - room to grow!

Good luck to today's fasters!

akarucker · 28/05/2013 10:00

I'm still just not feeling it! Don't know if it's because it's bank hol/ half term, or that I've got a bit of a sore throat, or that I'm bored of ADF, but I haven't fasted for several days now, and each NFD seems to be between 0.5-1.0lb gain. Losing heart a bit.

Trying a fast today but my heart's just not in it. The realization of 'well, if I don't ADF for the rest of my life, then the pounds are just going to pile on' is a bit depressing at the moment.

Trying very hard to get my mind adjusted, with a focus on trying harder after this week is done. saf if I remember correctly, you went through a similar phase a few weeks ago, but your weight maintained during those couple if weeks? Yep, not happening here!

Elderberries · 28/05/2013 10:06

I'm sorry but I can't seem to keep up with the threads but I wanted to share my good news. Started 5:2 at the beginning of march and as of last Friday have now lost a stone. I started at over 16 stone. I had lost hope after failing at every diet I tried but this works brilliantly for me.

I'm strict with the 500 calories for two days and then just eat what I want to eat the rest of the time. I try to be mindful on NFD but I do blow out sometimes.

It does work.

I also have other benefits. I've stopped having aches in my ankles and I did my first run in two years on Saturday. I feel like I'm in control on this diet....at last.

Elderberries · 28/05/2013 10:07

Sorry should have said 'way of life'

Itsaboatjack · 28/05/2013 10:15

On a fast day today and I'm ravenous already. Far too much food and wine over the weekend so I'm really feeling it today. I did do some exercise though, long walk with sister on Sunday, 10k run yesterday so hopefully that will have negated some of it. Legs are tired today though. Won't weigh myself yet though as I know I fluctuate massively with water retention and will easily be 5 or 6 lbs up from Saturday morning.

Happy holidays Dotty

aka a few weeks back I also wasn't feeling it at all, was pushing myself too much I think with ADF or 4:3, consecutive fasts and doing zero calorie fasts. I don't know why I was trying to do it so hard core. Anyway I took about a week out, just focused a bit more on just mindful eating. I am now back on it so to speak, just doing the basics, 5:2 and focusing on mindful eating during the week and letting myself have a blow out at weekends. Hope you feel better about it all soon.

monster54 · 28/05/2013 10:19

Big hugs to betsy and aka....I can totally understand how you guys are feeling.

I have had a wonderful weekend and completely forgot about 5:2, I was fed up and I couldn't keep plodding on.

I few days break has refreshed me and I feel ready to 'start again'....

I have no idea of the damage I've done over the weekend and I probably won't weigh in this week and just hope 2 fast will undo any damage.

WE CAN DO THIS! I need to get rid of another stone by September and I can not fail!!!

mummyof2girlsx · 28/05/2013 11:02

urghhh ate and drank far too much yesterday! Not had anything to eat yet today just had black coffee and water so far.....don't know if I should fast today or not ....

meandmyfour · 28/05/2013 11:48

I just can't get into it this week, half term...kids running around, making cup cakes, rain and out tonight for dinner. I just feel hungry. Fighting a cold too.
Think this might have to be a week off and start afresh next week...I'll be right back at square one no doubt. Sad

fastyspeedyfast · 28/05/2013 12:02

Had a brilliant FD yesterday, no headaches, plenty of energy, no hunger. Even so, happy to be eating today!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 28/05/2013 12:07

Betsy, you couldn't be pregnant by any chance, could you?

Sounds like a lot of people are struggling. Akarucker I particularly feel for you, if its ADF forever that's a tough gig.

monster54 · 28/05/2013 12:36

Just need to remind ourselves of the positives and reassess even if it means taking a few days break.

I had relaxed and enjoyed the weekend, and I know I wasn't on plan as such but I was still wearing trousers that I couldn't fit in to this time last year!!

So I think it pays to take some time out to reflect. Come back renewed and stronger.

MizK · 28/05/2013 12:42

meandmyfour I feel the same way, had underestimated how tricky half term would be. Its my 5th fast today and I feel I've ruined it, wolfed a peanut butter sandwich that DD turned her nose up at :( going to stay strong and have something miniscule tonight for dinner.

With children around there seems to be so much more food prep and therefore temptation.. However I want to get through today a) because I ate loads over bank hol and really don't want to gain this week and b) this week is a trial run for the 6 weeks hols during which I expect I'll still be working towards goal weight (11 pounds to go!)

Thanks for keeping me semi-focussed everyone. In the 2 weeks I've been doing this, the thread has kept me semi sane :)

Cupcakexprincessx · 28/05/2013 13:19

Hi all,

Don't beat yourself up if you aren't in the mindset this week. If you do you will resent it. Better to relax and start fresh when you know you can do it.

Quick question regarding Tdee. Mine is 1690 per day. Is this low?

I really don't want to calorie count on my feast days as I know I will start to resent it. In the past having been on calorie counting diets I know that when I start having to say no to everything it always ends in a weekend of binging.

This wol, seems much healthier since I won't be restricting of feast days, therefore there will be no need for a blow out. Anyway back to the question, is 1690 enough to eat well with the odd treat on feast days?

At the weekend I know I would go over, so how should I best level it out so that I can eat more than my Tdee at weekends.

Thanks

ponygirlcurtis · 28/05/2013 13:33

Hello all, lots of people struggling at the mo Sad. Tortoise, I think 5lbs in 4 weeks is good, that's 1lb per week which is what it's meant to be, isn't it? I know I am slow loser, have been known to lose only half-lb per week before, but like you say, if I hadn't done it at all I wouldn't have lost the 17lbs that I did then. It was a slog, but I did it. (But I do get soooo frustrated at myself when I read about others' big losses!!!!! Envy)

Cupcake your TDEE is less than mine, but even so on weekday NFDs I struggle to hit 1500 (I have gotten into the habit of skipping breakfast, which would give me those extra cals to reach my TDEE I guess). So to your q - 1690 is more than enough to eat well on NFDs. And I eat less during the week, and don't count at weekends.

I didn't fast yesterday, was a BH here (we don't have a full week off here in Scotland, just a long weekend). Am fasting today, am reeeeeally tired though, lots of broken sleep over weekend due to poorly toddler. I fell asleep on the sofa this morning again, woke to find him sitting up on the sofa with me watching TV, waaay past his lunchtime!

Anyway, I'm trying to concentrate on health benefits - I definitely feel better, my emotional eating is largely under control on NFDs, and I'm drinking more water so less bloated. I had a sneaky peek at some scales yesterday, but it was just before dinnertime (not first thing in morning), but even so, they said I was several lbs down. So hoping if I could get on them first thing, I'd get a nice surprise of even more off.

Off to have some soup then a cup of tea. Have a good day everyone.

BetsyBell · 28/05/2013 13:33

Aww guys, thanks for the pep talk, it's so nice to have somewhere to grumble and get loads of support back Flowers. I'm feeling more positive now after a morning of culture with the kids - youngest (6) is finally able to spend more than 5 minutes in a museum without complaining which is wonderful.

I've managed a morning without food and have now had a small bowl of salad leaves with ham and jalapeno peppers plus a nectarine so if I manage from now until 6pm with just tea I'll be fine for my fish pie - maybe a little over on calories but then I usually am!

tortoise Shock I'd better not bloody be! IUD still firmly in place Grin

aka [hugs] I totally feel for you, I am perfectly capable of putting on nearly a pound a day if I'm not careful. Something that helped me to change how I ate was keeping a food diary spreadsheet - I do it on googledocs. I put everything on there and it gave me some perspective and insight into my eating habits and it would mean I'd think twice before mindlessly stuffing yet another biccy in my mouth. I find it more useful than MFP as you can see it all laid out and I'll refer back to previous months to see if I've progressed.

You're right, ADF isn't sustainable and you do need to find a resolution to your eating days to make 5:2 work but I wonder if you'd be so free with your non-fast days if you were doing 5:2 knowing that you'd be sabotaging all the good work achieved?

Moominlandmidwinter · 28/05/2013 13:39

Tortoise, 5lb is still good going in 4.5 weeks. As you said, if you weren't doing this, your weight would still be going up. So have you not just prevented yourself from gaining, you've achieved a loss, too.

Crystal, I too have been having very vivid (and some very rude!) dreams. The other night, after a FD, I dreamed that I was at a dinner party, and every course was a large piece of delicious gateau. In my dream, I was saying that I would regained my weight from this cake-feast. I woke up in a panic!

bugsyburge · 28/05/2013 13:53

afternoon all,

I've been away for a fortnight so haven't checked in lately....

I am honestly not sure I want to get on the scales after holiday!!! I have been eating & drinking a substantial amount and not running like I do normally....

eeek back on the wagon today- I think this will be a struggle, wish me luck!!!!!Sad

vieenrose · 28/05/2013 14:07

Hello everybody
WI yesterday and another 5 pounds lost, bringing the total loss to 25 pounds since I started on Jan 5. I'm dancing around with joy! I am now just 8 pounds off my target weight and at my slimest since having DC.
And I'd like to add that WI took place after a weekend spent gorging on cheese, wine and generally good food -well I do live in France after all.
I hope this provides a little encouragement to those out there who are struggling.
I'm 46, had failed miserably at diets in the past and truly felt my slim days were over. My strategy to avoid disappointment is to stay well away from the scales and weigh myself only every 5 or 6 weeks at the gym and then I know I'm bound to see some progress. The rest of the time, I'm content with NSV with clothes, measurements, other people's comments etc...
