The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Happy Mondays everyone, was so busy last week with work and stuff that I barely managed to check in, much less post.

I have been keeping going with two fasts a week, Monday and Friday, although I'm not fasting today because the kids are off school and I think I need my normal routine. Going to try it tomorrow or Wednesday. But generally, I think I'm probably still struggling to meet my TDEE on NFDs - it's not so much conscious to lose weight, just not so hungry, not wanting to eat so constantly (and since my problem before was emotional eating, am reluctant to eat if I'm not hungry). Hope I'm not scuppering myself though.

Still haven't been able to weigh myself, so don't know if I'm losing much but probably not, I lose very slowly (even though I have at least 2 stones to lose, if not more). But I continue to see difference to my shape, because I think I am less bloated. Yesterday I could get a jacket done up that I couldn't before. And I bought a couple of tops and tried on the 16s - but the 14s were fine, and not for wearing for another month anyway so hopefully I'll be even more comfortable in them by then.

Southeastdweller your post struck a chord with me - I hate going out without a jacket on, or at least my arms covered up. I always struggle with the transition from winter clothes to summer, I want to stay drowning in layers for my own mental security! You'd think that'd make it easier for me to sweat the lbs off though, but apparently not...

JB30 · 27/05/2013 11:40

Thanks BetsyBell - yeah, I was th

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 27/05/2013 11:46

Silverbeetle I know nothing about antibiotics, but that definitely, definitely sounds like water gain. Hopefully as soon as that process is reversed, the weight will just slough off with it.

(I always put on 2lbs of water weight around the time my period is due, and then a day or two into it I feel like I basically have to wee every fifteen minutes all day and then I'm back to weight. So it definitely happens for a number of reasons)

Betsy that's a great link, thank you! And L3 is where I did measure, so that's good. I can't believe I seem to have lost 6lb but 8cm already, does that sound like i measured wrong/too high around the waist to start with? Either way, it was definitely the waistline/visceral fat thing that motivated DH and I to do this in the first place, so it's a really important measurement for me.

Happy fasting, all; I'm at the end of a successful FD; liquids only until dinner (skim coffee, miso soup) and then a huge bowl of red curried chicken, veg and lentil soup. And then some popcorn. I'm stuffed!

fastyspeedyfast · 27/05/2013 11:50

And another fast day. Ate tonnes of carbs at the weekend and washed it down with alcohol so I'm feeling good going into this! Grin

babyfatbutt You've lost a whole kilo in less than a month. So over half a pound a week. That's good, not bad! If you'd put on a kilo... well, that would be an issue.

babyfatbutt · 27/05/2013 13:40

Do you think it's OK then fast? i lost much better when i did this WOE in September last year (lost 5lbs in about 2 or 3 weeks) but then i was probably being more careful with calories and tbf I did do 4:3 for 2 weeks.
I suppose you're right that it's still a steady loss. Have been a few birthdays and so some cakes and stuff on NFD as well.

awomanchanging · 27/05/2013 15:54

Thank you for your replies. I will continue with what I've been doing and check in with the scale in another week or two. Todays my third FD and I am hoping it sheds all the yummy foods I've indulged in over this past weekend! FD is today and Thursday then my weekly weigh in on Saturday morning. Hope everyone is doing great! Contemplating my first fasted workout. May just get it out the way

ELR · 27/05/2013 16:08

Hi everyone supposed to be fasting today but hasn't happened! Going on holiday to croatia in the early hours and wanted to fast but suddenly had loads of family desend upon us so ended up cooking and buying puddings in. Oh well holiday has started early! Ready for them all to bugger off now though as need to pack!

mummyof2girlsx · 27/05/2013 16:41

Hello, I only post on here occasionally although I am a long time lurker and like to keep up with the thread and find the advise and support fantastic!

I am after some advice, I usually do 4:3 and my fast days are monday, wednesday and friday. I am pretty much at maintenance now but still do 4:3 as it allows me to indulge at weekends!

Decided not to fast today as it is bank holiday but was going to have a senisble day within tdee ....BUT I have now been invited round to my sisters house and we very rarely get together so I know it will involve Wine and nice food, also tonights Wine will mean I will find it difficult to fast tomorrow so may have to do 5:2 this week and I'm scared that my weekends indulgence along with only 2 fasts will mean a gain on the scales on Friday!

Has anyone dropped from 4:3 to 5:2? And if so how did it affect your weigh in?

Thanks!!

Welcome Raffles it may be too late now, but sometimes having a major pig out the day before makes fasting harder rather than easier. If you can go easy on the carbs/sugar tonight.

You can do this. It gets easier as your body gets used to it.

Moominlandmidwinter · 27/05/2013 17:28

Hello everyone.

I had a very pleasant surprise this morning. Had been at my sister's all weekend, eaten lots of yummy food, and drank a fair bit of Wine. Did stick to meal times only, though. Also a very lazy weekend, activity-wise. Weighed in this morning, to check what the damage was, and I've lost 1lb since Friday. How??? I was going to do a mini-fast or two plus 5:2 this week, but will just do 5:2, and save extra fasting for if I get stuck on a plateau. I'm so pleased that I've passed the half-stone mark now, in just 1 month! Smile

FD today, and have found it easy so far, despite cooking DH pasta for lunch. Have had water, peppermint tea, bovril, and just had a cup of tea with milk. Am about to stick a potato in the oven, and will have that with half a tin of beans and some green salad. I'm looking forward to my NFD tomorrow though!

LexingtonBear · 27/05/2013 17:44

Lovely weekend but far too much of everything eaten and drunk! Interestingly after a three fast day week last week, I really didn't feel like eating much on Saturday and it took me ages to get into the swing of the weekend. Sadly, have made up for it yesterday and today. Cannot wait to fast tomorrow!! Cannot believe I have just written that..

Cupcakexprincessx · 27/05/2013 19:15

Hi all,

Thanks Crystal Decanter and others for replies.

The only reason I want to do a mon/tues pattern is because on other week days, due to family commitments, there would be far too much temptation in my way and I know for sure I would crack.

Also on monday and tuesday Im in the mindset of it, I know I can do it.

If I have my 500 cals in three small meals in the day both monday and tuesday do you think this would still work for me?

As surely my body wouldn't be starving and holding onto all the fat/calories.

Thanks so much! Need help

:)

fastyspeedyfast · 27/05/2013 21:03

babyfatbutt Yes I think that's really good! You're down a kilo in under a month. If you lose one kilo every month doing this the easy way, just two fasts a week and not too careful on NFDs, then that's heaven, isn't it? The weight loss will be slow but relatively painless.

babyfatbutt · 27/05/2013 22:27

Thanks for the encouragment fasty, wll try to think of it that way. Have stayed pretty much within my 500 cals today and looking forward to NFD tomorrow!

CrystalDeCanter · 27/05/2013 22:57

Hello everyone, good to read all your good progress and support. Lexington isn't it odd how you get out of the habit of stuffing yourself Grin

It's Tuesday morning here and I fasted yesterday. I found it quite hard going and was pretty hungry (fast no. 3 after a BIG weekend). Also I had a really bad nights sleep, I think I was just so hungry I kept waking up. I had to get a banana at 3am or I'd have had no sleep at all. Also the dreams!!!!! Anyone else similarly afflicted? When I did finally get to sleep I had the craziest (and also quite rude) dreams. It was the same last week too for me it seems that fasting = massively vivid dreams.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 27/05/2013 23:17

Crystal I definitely sleep more lightly, so remember dreams more vividly.

Weighed this morning after yesterdays fast. Have bounced back up a lb, the one paltry lb I lost last week, meaning no weight loss in two weeks. So very frustrated.

CrystalDeCanter · 27/05/2013 23:26

How very bloody annoying Tortoise. How odd to be heavier after a fast day. When's your next fast?

Your earlier post saying you've had good cm loss and 6lbs down overall is good though. Hang on to that. It's pretty awesome!

chasingtail · 28/05/2013 07:48

phew, found you - 3 try lucky, this has to be the most up to date thread........!

Hi everyone - back on the Fast Diet after a 2 month break (where I seem to have put on all the weight I lost, if not more.

Well we are are due to leave for a last minute break on sunnier shores in 3 weeks (shhh, don't tell the school!) and am hoping that I can lose a reasonable amount of weight if I stick rigidly to the plan.

does anyone have any suggestions/tips for quick weight loss on this plan? Would 4:3 help kick start things? Am only looking at about 8 pounds, so hoping this would be achievable, combined with some proper exercise? Cannot bear the thought of shoe horning my way into my cozzie the way I am at the mo pigs wrestling in a sack spring to mind! Grin

realise 3 weeks is a really short time frame but would be great if i could at least shift some weight.

Bramblesinafield · 28/05/2013 08:00

4:3 and exercise sounds good chasing tail - you don't know until you try and might be a good one for NSV.

Cor it was hard work yesterday. Went over a little bit, but the alternative was to eat like a non fast day. Back to target weight again.

Cooked a large batch of lentil curry and froze it in separate batches in the innocent pots I saved and washed out.

One more fast this week, keeping busy is the way forwards. But not today. Buttered toast and marmalade for breakfast - although I feel hungrier after 700 cals than I would after 500.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 28/05/2013 08:25

5lb now, in 4.5 weeks (9 fasts). But if I hadn't started, my weight would definitely be going up, so there's that.

Brambles you're at target? Wow well done.

Lazytoad · 28/05/2013 08:26

Morning all. I was going to fast today but my period is due tomorrow and for three days leading up to it all I want to eat is sugar and carbs. I ate quite badly yesterday but maybe not quite as bad as I would have done before this woe (am still very knew, have done just three fast days so far). Do you think I should fight it and try to fast today or should I wait for a sounder day. It doesn't help that I stupidly went on the scales today knowing that I always weigh more at this time of the month to see the 1.5lbs I have lost back on. I know it's just water retention (I hope) but still not nice to see.

Lazytoad · 28/05/2013 08:31

Crystal I don't sleep so well after a fast, and yes strange dreams. One of my dreams last week was about me texting my daughter's teacher's Dad all through the night!

EagleRiderDirk · 28/05/2013 08:36

crystal I find it hard to drop off on a fast day night. I tend to want to stay in bed the morning after, though the kids wont let me Wink

Happy to see a loss again this morning, despite several Wine on saturday, and brownies and indian takeaway on sunday and monday. Did manage to keep just below tdee all 3 days though even with the treats.

BetsyBell · 28/05/2013 08:46

Ok, attempting a fast day today. My body is not my friend at the moment - feeling very lethargic, like I'm fighting off a cold, seem to have had some kind of low grade stomach bug for a week too. I've spent the last couple of days barely moving as I've felt completely drained and eating a bit more than usual. I'm waiting to 'snap out of it' but it's not going to be today. I need to before the weigh piles on, I'm already up by a couple more pounds than I have been for a long time.

However, I'm planning a busy day with the kids and am starting the day as if I'm fasting, but if that falls by the wayside I'm not going to beat myself up about it.

I think I'd better have some caffeine before I fall asleep though... How I miss motivated, energetic Betsy! Please come back!
