GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/05/2013 08:27

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

It's hard to know, awoman. Your TDEE is so high that I'd have thought 2400 would be enough - I also know that my TDEE is significantly higher according to the fitbit (2150) then MFP (1900), so perhaps you want to check with both places?

awomanchanging · 27/05/2013 03:59

tortoise i have a fitbit and hrm and use both. Using the hrm for my cardio activities fitbit calculates my tdee to be 2700 avg i thought 23-2400 would be enough but maybe my body doesn't like the greater deficit and maybe the fast days deficit is enough to make a change

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 27/05/2013 04:33

What is a hrm?

Anyway, I say go with your plan. What's the worst that'll happen?

swallowedAfly · 27/05/2013 05:59

morning all. came on to report that for one of the first times ever i woke up wanting breakfast this morning. ended up making eggs at 5.30am. seeing as it's not a habit for me i went with ok if my body is craving eggs this morning it must need eggs for some reason Grin

my weight has held steady over the weekend and clearly today isn't a fast day. should try and fit one in.

frenchfancy · 27/05/2013 06:42

Awomanchanging I would stick with your plan of 2400. I really don't think eating another 300 cals a day will help you lose weight. That may happen if you are eating really low amounts but I can't believe it to be true for figures over 2000. More likely is that your muscles are retaining water as they are changing. The weight loss will come once your muscles have stopped changing.

I wouldn't be looking at small changes of less than a lb. Try to keep away from the scales for a couple of weeks.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 27/05/2013 06:46

Stupid question if I may - someone asked this upthread but I can't find it now - how/where am I measuring my waist? Across the belly button can't be right, because that's in line with my hips. At the thinnest part can't be right, because that's way up under my boobs. So where?

frenchfancy · 27/05/2013 07:18

At the thinnest part. I don't think it is exactly the same place in relation to the belly button for everyone as we are all different.

MelanieCheeks · 27/05/2013 07:33

I go with "thinnest part" as well.

HRM is a heart rate monitor.

Eggs are great fro breakfast!

My sister called me last night - she and her husband have been trying this for the past week, and are both finding it doable, though she doesn't have a means of counting calories so was checking some values with me.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 27/05/2013 07:46

Well, if I take the thinnest part that is definitely belly, not ribcage, I'm down 8cm in a month. Or I measured wrong at first, but either way that's made me very happy.

Melanie does your sister not have an internet connection? I use a calorie counter book mostly because usually the online ones are US based, but there's calorie info on everything surely?

BetsyBell · 27/05/2013 08:12

Awoman If you're doing insanity then some of that 'weight' is water - your muscles require lots of water during the repair process - hence the body fat levels not showing an increase.

By the way, don't set full store by the scales, they do not tell the full story (and the fat measurements are notoriously unreliable), take measurements as well and look at how your clothes are fitting.

Interesting to see people's reports of doing 2 fasts in a row, it sounds like 6:1 would have been as effective in a week when 2 non-consecutive fasts are not possible. 6:1 is likely to be my fasting pattern this week.

dotty I love that size 10 story! Grin I know what you mean about replacing clothes - I've been buying bits on ebay and charity shops (and basics in primark and supermarket). The dresses I bought are the first properly priced items I've bought - not that they were expensive - and I did think twice before committing. However, they were the smallest size in the shop... Anymore weightloss will not change my dress size as my extra pounds are stored below my hips!

Anyway, I am somewhat hungover this morning... I'm pleased to say that my days of not being able to drink more than one glass of wine are well and truly over! My body and the scales will not thank me Wink

BetsyBell · 27/05/2013 08:17

This is a useful measurement guide for checking on reduction of visceral fat (the dangerous stuff that coats your organs).

dogsdays · 27/05/2013 08:17

Morning all, Im more of a lurker but occasional poster - just wanted to say this thread is brilliant for motivation SmileFlowers
Ive got 4 weeks to go till my big holiday St LUCIA [GRIN] [GRIN] At my last post I had hit 9st 10 lbs lowest for years but since then have been a bit lax and not counted etc+ cheated on fast daysBlush So now with fitbit on my person, I will track and not cheat and keep you posted- Im hoping new week, increased motivation Wink

MelanieCheeks · 27/05/2013 08:26

My sis isn't that internet savvy - her teenage sons could help her if required. But really, she's having a sachet of porridge for breakfast, and a cupasoup for lunch - both these have calorie details on the packaging. Then chicken with veg for dinner (easy to add spuds and bread for the teenage boys). My advice to her is the same as I give to everyone - get started whatever way works for you. Fine tune the details as you go along.

BetsyBell · 27/05/2013 08:28

dogdays Envy Grin

Bramblesinafield · 27/05/2013 08:38

Morning all. Fd here today, ohew - feel like I had a carb/sugar out at the weekend, although in reality I probably didn't, just so much more aware of carbs etc now. Three lbs of undigested food heavier than my lowest today, but I know it will fall off again (lives in hope!).

A week to go until Paris!

Bramblesinafield · 27/05/2013 08:38

Waving hello at dog days, not jel of hol at all! ;)

babyfatbutt · 27/05/2013 08:41

I was here before with another name but name changed for something and can't change back. Confused. Anyway. Weighed myself again and still 74kg, so I've only lost 1 measly kilo since the 2nd May??? Maybe I'm eating too much on non fast days? But I use MFP most o them time and stay within my TDEE? Bit disappointing.

silverbeetle · 27/05/2013 09:42

Morning all - need some advice please as I'm feeling really fed-up Sad.

Has anyone experienced weight gain whilst on a course of antibiotics?
I've been taking Doxycycline for an eye infection for a week now and have been really good, sticking to my 500 cals on fast days and eating well within my TDEE on non fast days. In fact I have been better than normal eating loads of salads and not drinking alcohol.
Yet every day I have been steadily putting on about 0.5lb!! Which means I am 2lb heavier than I was two weeks ago -
Even DH can't believe it, as he has seen what I have been eating and has commented at how good I'm being.

I am desperately hoping it's water retention as my fingers look a bit puffy and feel tight but have read the accompanying leaflet and it doesn't mention water retention.

Any ideas or similar experiences?

BetsyBell · 27/05/2013 10:03

silverbeetle I don't know the science behind it but it sounds like you're retaining water like mad. The antibiotics will have wiped out loads of important gut flora so make sure you're taking lots of probiotics - food based stuff like live yogurt and I think I'd get some in capsule form from a health food shop too. Once you've got some good digestive flora thriving again hopefully that should help with the water retention, or it may go when you finish your course of meds.

I googled antibiotics and water retention - you're not alone. I hope you feel better soon.

silverbeetle · 27/05/2013 10:17

Thanks Betsy I think I'll nip out to the supermarket for those little bottles of Yakult (I think they're called that). I didn't know you could buy probiotics in tablet form, have a Holland & Barrett up the road hopefully they might sell them.

Commonsense tells me I can't have put on fat but when you've been battling with your weight for years, commonsense seems to go out of the window when things like this happen and panic sets in and makes you feel a bit crappy and miserable.
I've also googled it and can see that other people have also complained of this problem, it's just that it's not listed as a side effect on the leaflet Confused so you start to think you are imagining things and perhaps I've been getting up in the night and eating packets of biscuits in my sleep Wink

SkylerWhite · 27/05/2013 10:33

silverbeetle maybe try drinking lots and lots and lots of water? I have found that after a couple of days of drinking about 3 litres a day, the water retention tends to lessen somewhat.

Good luck to everyone fasting today. I am glad to be back to a FD after what feels like stuffing myself all weekend. Asparagus and poached egg for supper tonight, yummy!

silverbeetle · 27/05/2013 10:37

Thanks SkylerWhite fortunately I've been drinking loads anyway, perhaps I've got off lightly with just a few pounds.

postmanpatscat · 27/05/2013 10:42

Morning all :)

Sunny bank holiday here, but guaranteed rain later. All these holidays planned but it's ages til mine. At least I know I'll look better in my swimwear than I did last year!

Good luck to today's fasters. No fasting for me til we get back home on Weds.

JB30 · 27/05/2013 10:51

Hi All - I'd like to join in if I may? Doing 5:2 for 1 week, today's my 3rd fast. From last Monday to Friday I was over 6 pound down but scales ain't looking that pretty this morning. However, reckon its weekend bloat and by Friday I am hopeful I'll see a pound down. I'm doing lunch/dinner and small snack in the evening. Hot black tea is my saviour from wake up til lunch. I am really optimistic this could be a new WOE for me (love not using the D word!)
Lunch is chicken salad, dinner is small piece of salmon, loads of green veg. Was a bit of a pig over weekend - think I hit 2000+. Weekdays nfd's are easy compared to weekends. Any suggestions on how to control? Cheers!

BetsyBell · 27/05/2013 11:35

Welcome JB30 Sounds like you're doing brilliantly. The whole point of this WOE (for me anyway!) is to keep it light over the week to allow for weekend fun... Oh and I never weigh in on a Monday!
