Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 20! Officially a score.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/05/2013 08:27

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

heh heh mttum Grin

I've just thrown half a glass of vin rouge all over my current favourite clothes - of which I have very few as I got rid of them all (too big Grin), however, having to sort out de-staining (a task I am hopeless at) and get changed, all before I managed to drink anything has taken the gloss off my long awaited lovely dinner.

sigh

Ah well, no snacking.

Very very tired, so glad it's half term.

wonderingagain I concur - how have you got such a low tdee? Doesn't sound nearly enough.

INeedThatForkOff · 24/05/2013 18:58

wonderingagain, you must have MFP set to weight loss. If you alter it to maintenance you will get the right TDEE, and it will be more like the 1800 you ate yesterday.

I've got though the worst of my FD. Feeling under the weather so think I'll have an early night to see the rest off. Got my mouth made up for a curry tomorrow night Smile

Endofmyfeather · 24/05/2013 19:27

I know there are some big fans of this on here and I need persuasion and convincing before I spend all that money sooo.....talk to me about the FitBit please! Is it worth the money? Anyone got negative reviews?

ELR · 24/05/2013 19:45

endo I will watch with interest I am going to get the flex just waiting for it to come out.

ChesterDrawers · 24/05/2013 20:03

Wow, confused by the new topic thing, couldn't find you all at first. Thought you were hiding from me Sad

Anyone planning on fasting on bank hol Monday? I am debating whether that will be harder than doing tues and wed consecutively when I am back in work.

Hmmmm...

PoshVoice · 24/05/2013 20:16

I'd could never fast on a bank holiday, why deny yourself on a holiday?

Anyhow, weekly weigh in today and I've dropped another 0.7 kg taking me down to a bmi of 24.7, a full 4 down from my pre 5:2 weight Smile

Tried grilled asparagus and a poached egg for the first time yesterday, and must say Yum!

Good luck to all fasters, even those weird ones fasting on a ban holiday Wink

ELR · 24/05/2013 20:18

Just had a major snack attack, bowl of musili, mini snack cheese, half an apple, half an oat and cashew nut cereal bar, 8 pistachios and an almond.

I had a chip butty from the chippy at 4pm, why oh why oh why!!! I Eat chip shop stuff about 2-3 times a year as it never agrees with me. White carbs are the devils work!! So major blood sugar crash hence the major snack attack, feel really bloated and annoyed! Just put it into my fitness pal and today's calories are 2278 so over by 350.

ELR · 24/05/2013 20:21

And I'm just about to o out to my book club meeting will def have to try really hard to avoid the snacks! I only had 3 hours sleep last night and still got a cold so hanging on to that excuse by a thread!!

FrozenFlowers · 24/05/2013 20:36

I wrote a whole post and then the site crashed and took it with it Sad

Am having a good day today. It's an NFD and I am off work. Now, I'm not kidding myself - I will have had a LOT of calories today. Especially because I went out for lunch, and my meal involved beer and chips and cheese and dessert. So I probably ate way over my TDEE. Blush

BUT I have not snacked. I've been binge watching episodes of Grey's Anatomy for most of the afternoon, which would usually be a prime "eat loads of biscuits" situation. But I haven't had a single one. Not only that, but I haven't wanted one, and have been totally aware that I haven't wanted one, and that I haven't needed one.

This is quite a major breakthrough for me - I have been so accustomed to hugely overeating through habit. So I think this will be really helpful in the long run, even if it does take me a while to get my NFD eating down to routinely sensible levels.

In addition, I tried on a pair of trousers that a few weeks ago I could only barely do up, and now they are a pretty comfortable fit. So all in all, a positive day!

akarucker · 24/05/2013 21:03

Some good accomplishments there frozen

ayshigirl · 24/05/2013 21:03

fastyspeedyfast and Emilythornesbff no way do I count on non-fast days! I'm way too greedy and lzy for that. No, I'm just talking about the 500 cals. It gives me a headache to work it all out and I do need to be prepared cos otherwise the kids confuse me! Does anyone go for prepackaged diet food? I cook my own meals and I just find it all so fiddly/time consuming!

ayshigirl · 24/05/2013 21:04

Oh yes, now I have to keep it off cos I bought some new jeans today, a size down!

akarucker · 24/05/2013 21:12

ayshigirl I ballpark it if I make my own food (which I rarely do on FD). Life's too short to weigh & measure for the sake of 50 cals here & there!

mttum · 24/05/2013 21:23

Nice one frozen, the no snacking habit seems to be spreading. I am doing it as well, with a fair bit of success - thanks everyone for the inspiration Thanks

My success story for the day: just got back from a LONG business trip about half an hour ago, and couldn't be bothered cooking so got a takeaway from the local Indian. Felt full after half of it (admittedly still a good plateful) and STOPPED EATING! Shock. That would never have happened a couple of months ago, I would have kept ploughing through the delicious food until I felt stuffed or sick. Now I have had the delicious food and still retain a virtuous glow.

Just have to avoid the chocs now Smile

EATmum · 24/05/2013 21:59

Breadandwine and those that commented, thank you so much. I need to stop being so rigid I think! I just know that some days will be really hard to fast on - so if u miss the "easy" days, I panic. But when those "easy" days start at 4am because of DD3, it feels like a long time till lunch! Thanks again.

ceebeegeebies · 24/05/2013 22:34

Slightly off topic but has anyone else seen the 'bra intervention' threads? I came across one the other night, measured myself and it said I was a 36E when I have been wearing 38C and even those always seemed a bit big so I was Shock. Anyway I went to Sainsbos today and bought myself a cheap bra in 36DD just to try (no 36E so thought that was the next best thing). The cups looked HUGE and I thought it would never fit. Tried it on when I got home and it fits like a glove Shock Shock totally amazing!!!

Now on topic I think I might weigh myself tomorrow for the first time in 3 weeks and have fingers crossed that there is significant movement to give me motivation as I found yesterday's FD difficult Sad Sad

BsshBossh · 24/05/2013 22:49

Betsy I'm going to try and do both 6:1 and NoS during half term (not BH Monday though) - fast day on Tuesday instead of Monday (will be driving across country on Tuesday so fasting should be fine) then no snacking Wednesday through Friday. But if it doesn't work (as will be at in-laws) then I won't beat myself up over it,

But, this week has been a big WIN - no snacking all week. Hurrah!

Southeastdweller · 24/05/2013 22:51

Hi chester Yes I'm fasting Monday. I have to work last minute so I thought I'd take the opportunity to fast as there's hardly any shops or cafes open at weekends and public holidays where I work, and I'll have a lot to do so it makes sense. Quite looking forward to sitting there alone with some fruit and a coffee to get a break from a tense home situation! Will go to the gym afterwards too. Also fasting tomorrow.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 24/05/2013 23:37

Ayshigirl, I worked out three dinner recipes that all come in at 250 cal, and just rotate them. When we're that hungry neither of us care if we had chicken soup already this week.

Fitbit! I'm the evangelist. I'm not even a real data geek, so its hard to explain the power of this thing, but there have been several evenings where I've run up and down my stairs, and/or done an invisible skiprope session in my kitchen, just to meet my step/ energy expenditure goals. And the data really does help to drill down and get insights into how active I am. Eg yesterday I took my girls for a walk, so I reached the step goal. But because it was a slow walk, I got nowhere close to my calorie burn goal. It measures stride length and altitude and general moving aroundness, so much more sophisticated than a pedometer. I know I go on, but it has transformed me from someone who automatically takes the quickest/easiest route to someone who chooses the long way round, or gets somewhere ten minutes early and parks further away, etc.

Endofmyfeather · 25/05/2013 00:15

Tortoise I was hoping for something similar myself. I've been pretty motivated by even the simple stats on MFP, so I'm thinking the Fitbit is the next logical step. It's just quite expensive for something I'm not 100% sure I would use long-term. Decisions!

Quite interested in the sleep analysis too.

Itsaboatjack · 25/05/2013 00:42

Aah bed at last. Been a long day at work today with very few breaks. No snacks here today either..... Wine in doesn't count right Wink

mttum · 25/05/2013 04:52

tortoise, sorry if this is a daft question but does the fitbit "measure" other types of exercise or just steps taken? I'm a real "Inspector Gadget" but most of my exercise is sort of strenuous callisthenics or boxercise using the wii, hence the question. Thanks

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 25/05/2013 04:59

It measures steps, altitude and general moving aroundness, so it tells me the difference between a day when I'm lightly active vs heavily, even if the step count is the same. It can't tell that you're doing boxercise, per se, but it'd be able to tell that you're moving around fast, jumping, etc. And the computer program that the physical bit syncs to has the capacity to take other exercise into account. Ie, if you manually input an hour's swimming or whatever it'll add that to your activity score and calorie burn score.

mttum · 25/05/2013 05:10

Ooh, sounds tempting...

INeedThatForkOff · 25/05/2013 07:08

Just weighed in. Only a little loss this week, but I'm glad of anything at all after my birthday binge and a big loss last week. So 6 lbs altogether over two weeks. Very happy with that Smile
