The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

1/2 lb off today. But it's goal - 1/2lb, I've decided to give myself a little leeway for bouncing back up. I'm the lightest I've been in 14 years now, since I had ds 2 - no other diet /woe has worked for me.

Thank you so much for all of the support and info.

wonderingagain · 25/05/2013 07:52

I've lost my first stone!

It took 4 weeks and 3 days.

wonderingagain · 25/05/2013 07:54

I've just joined myfitnesspal - is there a mumsnet group on there?

BsshBossh · 25/05/2013 07:54

Brambles you're at goal - whoop!

MelanieCheeks · 25/05/2013 08:07

Wondering, I'm not sure if there's a Mumsnet group, but there are two 5and2 groups which are worth a look. (I'm Melaniecheeks on there too, cos I'm unimaginative)

BetsyBell · 25/05/2013 08:09

Brambles, wondering Flowers fantastic :)

Bssh I think I will go with a similar approach this week. I'm going to monitor when I feel snacky and see if I've managed to change my post-school habit as I haven't really thought about whether I get those pangs on a non-school day. If I do I absolutely won't snack then, I really need to change that habit for good if I can. I've spent this week feeling as hungry on NFDs as I do on fast days though there could be a plethora of reasons for that (I am extremely tired, not sleeping well and fighting off a cold) and I have upped my meal sizes a bit (but not excessively) to try and help with that. I certainly haven't lost weight but honestly, a week feeling like this pre-5:2 would have seen several lb gain so I'm happy with that result.

Bramblesinafield · 25/05/2013 08:11

Morning Betsy. I allow myself to go over a bit. Only a little bit, for example having a few weetabix minis at bedtime (dry) so that I'm not awake with hunger.

I found it hard this week, must be totm on way as always craving carbs then,

It Certainly does make you think about eating habits though.

postmanpatscat · 25/05/2013 08:14

Morning all :)

Well done wondering

Might fast today, as off to visit my parents' tomorrow til Weds and we are staying in a B&B but mum's cooking dinners...think eating to TDEE is unlikely!

I feel like we've been 'promoted' now that we've got our own section, hopefully our success stories will inspire others to ditch WW etc and eat real food instead! I lost 21lbs in 12 weeks on 5:2 and my colleague has lost the same on 8 months of WW (and she eats their highly processed snacks and meals which might be the problem!)

I know we have the maintainers thread (I'm on there too!) but would a 'success stories' thread like the one on MFP be a good idea?

BetsyBell · 25/05/2013 08:18

brambles some days/weeks are so easy aren't they and then others just so difficult! I don't think any of the hunger I've felt on NFDs has been real hunger as I've just been looking at my food diary and there's plenty of filling food on there for each meal (except fast days of course). I'm not hungry at night just at the time when I'm usually snacking (between 4 & 5) and I'm fine once I've had my evening meal. I'm adjusting to a habitual change and my body is complaining hard! I will crack this though, I'm pretty stubborn when I've set my mind to something Wink

wonderingagain · 25/05/2013 08:29

melanie I have just joined the 5:2 thread that's mostly UK members. I've found the mumsnet thread too but it's not that busy.

EagleRiderDirk · 25/05/2013 08:35

Well done wondering

wohmum · 25/05/2013 09:05

I'm also a huge fan of the fitbit. The fitbit One is the best IMO as it tracks flights of stairs whereas the new Flex and the Zip just do steps and distance.

It does seem pricey, but i reckon I've saved the cost of it in petrol over the last few months easily!

Itsaboatjack · 25/05/2013 09:11

Morning. It's my mid-week, pre weekend WI today and I'm at a new low of 11st2.4 Grin. 2 stone lost now since beginning of Jan. 22lbs on 5:2 since end of Jan.

Hopefully that will motivate me not to overdo it over the weekend. We are going for a day out today with a big picnic, my aim is to just eat what I want and then stop, and not keep just picking at the food because its still in front of me.

BsshBossh · 25/05/2013 09:26

Betsy yes, just try it and see how it goes.

I seem to be maintaining well on 6:1 (with 500 cal meal at night) and NoS (no snacks, no seconds) during the working week. I'm not weighing (deliberately) but I can tell by my clothes/mirror/feel. Very happy with this. I can always revert to 5:2 if I lapse on the no snacking some days.

Love how flexible we can be on this WOE.

Dotty342kids · 25/05/2013 09:37

Sooooo.................. after my usual Monday fast, then resetting my TDEE on Tuesday to reflect the 10lbs I'd lost since starting this, and then tracking my cals on MFP accordingly AND doing my second fast of the week yesterday I saw 10st 9lbs on the scales this morning Grin.

Which is a 2-3lbs loss from the start of this week!
Amazing!

For anyone who's come to a bit of a plateau I definitely recommend resetting your TDEE according to your new weight and going back to MFP whilst you readjust to that. It's a bit of a shock having less than 1700 cals per day to play with but worth it for results like this morning!
Am fully anticipating it bouncing back up a bit but am throwing in another fast tomorrow before we go away on holiday where I'm going to try to have no / minimal lunches (based on having large breakfasts and a good evening meal each day) as my way of keeping things under control.

Dotty342kids · 25/05/2013 09:39

itsaboatjack well done! That's lovely to hear this morning Smile Keep up the good work! You'll be joining us in the 10's soon enough.....

spababe · 25/05/2013 09:53

well done wondering and Brambles
I have promised myself a FitBit when I have lost my first stone as an incentive as, having done some research, I really want one ! Wonder if it is worth waiting for the Flex or whether I prefer a more discrete clip. The £50 one doesn't measure sleep though does it? so it would have to be the £80 clip one

Itsaboatjack · 25/05/2013 10:22

Thanks Dotty and well done to you to. Good reminder to reset my TDEE too.

postmanpatscat · 25/05/2013 10:35

I also have the fitbit one and wouldn't swap it for the other types. I don't want to wear anything visible such as a wristband. It is a great incentive, and living in a three storey house certainly helps with those floor counts too! I walk/run over 50km most weeks even though I sit down a great deal at work.

Southeastdweller · 25/05/2013 10:41

Well done wondering, dotty, brambles and itsaboatjack.

itsaboatjack Will you be treating yourself to a little something on this wonderful achievement of a two stones loss ? Smile

wonderingagain · 25/05/2013 10:53

Brambles it is a great WoE. I'm doing alternate day fasting for now. I never coped with diets because it was such a major and permanent commitment. A persistent calorie controlled diet would mean restriction and not enjoying food, which to me, is part of living a good life!

To have to feel bad everytime I ate something good was driving me crazy so this way is brilliant because I can do without the indulgent foods if it's for one day only, where a permanent ban going on for months would be just a bit soul-destroying.

It works both ways too, I find I'm not eating as much on NFDs, and am more aware of being full. My digestive system feels as though it's coping better and is under less strain so the benefits are almost immediate.

I find I am doing very little exercise and slightly conserving energy by going to bed early etc but I think that will pass. After eating what the heck I liked for the past 20 years my body is probably slightly in shock now!

I have joined the myfitnesspal 5+2 group (hello melaniecheeks) [wave] and will probably post on there a bit more and less on here - can't keep up on here!

Cupcakexprincessx · 25/05/2013 12:48

Hi everyone :)

I am not actually a Mum but stumbled accross this thread and found it very helpful. Hope you don't mind.

I started the 5:2 diet on monday. I had 500 calories both Monday and Tuesday and found it easier than I expected.

One thing I dont understand is, if we have 500 calories two days a week and then on the other days either don't calorie count or have our daily requirement how do people lose a pound?

I always thought that you had to eat 3500 less a week to lose one pound.

But even if I ate 500 two days and my requirement or over on the feast days I wouldn't be eating 3500 less so how would I lose a pound a week?

Thanks for your help :)

KaleyX · 25/05/2013 13:04

Hi everyone,

I have had two successful fast days now, and no snacking/overeating on my non-fast days. I weighed in this morning and I have lost 4 lbs!!! With only 2 fast days :D :D Grin still ate steak / sundaes / pie!! What a fantastic diet! It honestly doesn't even feel like dieting, I'm definitely going to be consistent with this w.o.e (expecting 1-1.5lbs per week after this week)

KaleyX · 25/05/2013 13:12

Have been a bit preachy and evangelical about this diet Blush quite embarrassing, but I honestly cannot believe how well it's going for me so far!

Good luck to everyone else!

postmanpatscat · 25/05/2013 13:35

that's great kaley , a good start

cupcake don't take any notice of the 3500 calorie thing, there's no real science behind it. You are aiming for a deficit and if you want to be sure you can track your food eg using My Fitness Pal app or website. However, there are plenty of people on here who don't track their food yet still lose weight.
