GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/05/2013 08:27

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi everyone and well done to those of us who've lost weight this week. I lost half a pound so not a spectacular result but a loss is a loss and it's the equivalent of two packs of butter! I overdid it a little on a couple of NFD's so I was expecting either that or to stay the same...I've reached another all-time low anyway so that's great.

doris I go to the gym for cardio sessions four times a week and walk whenever I can. It's been a big part of my life long before I embarked on this WOL and always will be, one reason why I'm confident of (eventually) maintaining.

Enjoy the long weekend all Smile

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 24/05/2013 13:17

So, I weighed myself this morning - no idea why, since I usually only do so on post-fast mornings, not post-binge mornings - and I'm a lb down. After all my whining yesterday about not having lost all week.

Both DH and I found that we did accidental near-fast days today; when he came home from work at 7pm I'd had two pieces of toast and a banana all day, he'd had two boiled eggs, undressed green salad and a fruit bar. So we celebrated by buying ourselves an indulgent Friday night spread (it's late Friday night here) of avocado, oozing Brie, smoked salmon and suchlike. But we didn't eat nearly as much of it as usual - talk about whole lifestyle changes.

Doris, I don't do huge amounts of scheduled exercise because I'm very time poor, but I try and get to 10,000 steps a day which means building in a lot of incidental exercise (take stairs up to 6th floor office, play chasey with kids in park instead of sitting there watching them play, etc), I fence once a week and I try and cram in a jog twice a week but usually only manage once. I think the incidental exercise is the real key for maintaining weight loss, because it becomes just part of your day's rhythm.

Skyler very jealous of holiday! Given your 8 triumph, I think do whatever will make you happy - will restricting ruin your holiday, or will over-eating make you uncomfortable? Put enjoyment of the experience first and I bet that'll be the right answer.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 24/05/2013 13:33

Some great losses here! Sounds like most people are in the groove right now, fingers crossed it carries on.

Got weighed at a chemist scales this morning after weighing at home, just to see the difference. Scales at home 10.3.0, chemist 10.4.5. Bit of a difference! This was about an hour ago, fast day so lots of drinks but no food, surely it shouldn't be that much! Hey ho, I'll stick to my scales as they are so much more pleasing, and trying to stay positive that if they were wrong with my low weight, they were also wrong with my high weight, so would have had a starting weight of 11 something rather than 10. Here's to being properly in the 9s in the morning (was 10.0 this morning).

Advice appreciated. I fasted on Weds this week and for the first time really struggled. I'm about four/five weeks in and haven't found it hard. Various factors - sleep deprivation from small person wanting to play at night, bad day in the office, and bit coldy. I didn't give it up, but wondered whether I should have - is it better to call it quits and do it another day, or to cling (miserably) determinedly to the fast? Sure I ate more than my own body weight yesterday in carbs which probably negated any benefit in the fast itself! Would appreciate any thoughts.

EATmum Looks like your plea got lost in this ever-expanding thread, so I've reposted it here! Smile

akarucker · 24/05/2013 14:11

eatmum you know, some days you've just got to say 'sod it' and move on. There's always tomorrow to get back on track. Don't spend the day in misery I say. Sometimes it just isn't going to happen. Don't let it stress you out. I know you didn't give up, and credit to you, but my personal opinion is that if it happens again, it wouldn't be the end of the world if you postponed the fast.

virginposter · 24/05/2013 14:15

EATmum I've found listening to your body does the trick at these times. There is no point in 'punishing' yourself by fasting when you are really not feeling like it. I remember once waking up on a fast day absolutely starving and thinking that it would be hell to do the fast and I'd most likely fail. So I changed it to a NFD instead, ate what I wanted (in moderation) and then did my fast day the very next day and it was easy.
This is the wonder of this woe, flexibility is the key and ensures that you don't ever give up but just postpone.
Hope this helps Smile

virginposter · 24/05/2013 14:17

Oops, cross posted with akarucker who has given great advice.

akarucker · 24/05/2013 14:21

Ditto VP

BsshBossh · 24/05/2013 15:35

Doris I never exercised for the bulk of my weightloss, but once I felt lighter and slimmer I was ready. Now I run three times a week and do weights twice week. I love exercise and it makes me feel on top of the world. But I started by gentle swimming and lots of walking.

spababe · 24/05/2013 15:47

DH said he would join in with my FD today. He woke up and asked what was for breakfast. Felt the need to explain 'fasting' to him. He had no breakfast. His mate called round and they went out for a pub lunch during which he said he was 'good' as he 'only' had a goats cheese tart and salad oh and a pint of beer.
I had 2 boiled eggs and 2 Ryvitas (221 cals)
Dinner is planned as a piece of salmon and some veg roasted in frylight (294 cals)
If he looses more weight than me this week there is going to be trouble....

BetsyBell · 24/05/2013 16:02

Any non fasters joining me on a NO SNACKING day again today?

I am hungry but I will make it to dinner time.

However, I am going for a beer or two tonight so can't guarantee I'll be snack free all evening - but that counts as the weekend so fits nicely into the NoS theory Grin

It only counts on school days right Bssh? Surely half term is like one long special day.... right? Wink

meandmyfour · 24/05/2013 16:20

Anyone else wondering how successful next week will as it's half term?! I just can't imagining getting through two days on 500 cals with four kids at home driving me crazy!

SkylerWhite · 24/05/2013 16:21

Doris I do a JM video 6 days a week, and try to throw in a run a couple of times a week as well. The Couch to 5k turned me into a runner a couple of years ago, and I really liked the Chubby Jones podcasts (more alternative music and some swearing in the voice-overs!).

BetsyBell I am with you! I'm on a NFD, and have had half a pastrami sandwich, and a 15 for lunch. Going out to the theatre earlyish this evening, and then for a couple of drinks afterwards. Not sure what will happen in relation to dinner!

I do find it hard to eat normally on NFDs, I'm sure that I'm definitely not eating my TDEE. Anyone have any advice on this, seems to be v much a psychological thing for me.

spababe · 24/05/2013 16:25

Half term is worrying me as well and I can't even think about the 6 weeks of Summer holidays. I'm going for just 1 FD next week and trying to be good the rest of the time. My kids are old enough to nag/watch me so that helps.

wonderingagain · 24/05/2013 16:30

Yikes I seem to have consumed 1800 calories yesterday on my NFD. According to MFP I'm supposed to have 1200 per day so that averages out to 1200 if I have the 500 on the fast day.

All looking OK, kept weight down after NFD weigh-in which I am really pleased about.

Bsshbosh it's good to know you didn't start exercising until you had lost the weight, I feel the same, too lardy to be jumping about and straining my back. I can't wait til the day I can do a good fast hike without getting puffed.

Emilythornesbff · 24/05/2013 16:40

Right with you betsy and skyler
NFD today. I've eaten a bit of chocolate and a biscuit but had these with lunch, so not ^really^ snacking.
I've been checking each snack avoiding encounter. It's incredible how many times I have to negotiate a potential snacking situation. No wonder I've a stone to lose.
I was going to skip lunch today but decided against that crazy idea Grin ate some reheated Singapore noodles.
Lasagne and salad for supper. Stuffed peaches for pud. Yum.

meandmyfour · 24/05/2013 16:45

Hi spababe - good idea, I think I'll aim for one good fast too :)

spababe · 24/05/2013 16:46

nearly dinner time - stay strong everyone (no snacking)

Bramblesinafield · 24/05/2013 16:53

Push on through!

spababe · 24/05/2013 17:08

Bssh the other idea I had for half term was to have no breakfast then go to a pizza restaurant for lunch with the kids as some of them do 5:2 friendly dishes. Obviously with a low cal drink and no tea. Actually that sounds a bit grim but it is a thought...

ayshigirl · 24/05/2013 17:34

I've been doing 5:2 since end Jan and am managing to lose weight -about 1 stone 4 lbs so far - just a few more pounds to go! But I'm truly getting fed up with calorie counting/weighing food, all the calculations basically. Any tips or shortcuts pleeeeeeeease? What do you do?

mttum · 24/05/2013 17:51

betsy, it's just dawned on me that school days are days with an "s" in them - carte Blanche for snacks all week then???!!!Grin

Emilythornesbff · 24/05/2013 18:13

Ayshigirl
I don't count cals on a NFD. Just try to eat reasonably nutritious food and avoid snacking (the devil's own work)
On a fasting day I eat the same thing each time. A carton, tin, or portion of homemade soup, then an apple and a low cal choc drink. I cba to think beyond that.
If the weather ever heats up too much for soup I'll eat a piece of chicken/ meat/ omelette and a handful of leaves.

fastyspeedyfast · 24/05/2013 18:13

ayshigirl Wow that's great you're doing so well.

Do you mean calorie counting on the FDs? It's a bit of a pain but you only have to count to 500! :) I kinda know the calorie content of most of my FD food by now. I still have to measure them out, though (1 cup of oatmeal, for example, or count out six walnut halves).

I don't calorie count at all on NFDs. I just eat whatever I like. Slower weight loss, but more fun.

fastyspeedyfast · 24/05/2013 18:19

wonderingagain 1200 calories? That seems super low. Like unsustainably low. Surely you can eat more than that??
