GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/05/2013 08:27

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Oh knickers, looks like I have reached a dreaded plateau, no overall change in 2 weeks.
Didn't even lose any weight after yesterday's fast and only had a homemade vege stir fry and berries with yogurt for tea at 8.30pm.
So annoying, was hoping to see 9st something this morning and feel as though I was back on track after the blow out on Saturday but the scales said 10st 0 again.

Oh well stiff upper lip time - perhaps it's approaching TOM (I never write it down so can never remember ).

Well done everyone, some great losses.

Doris my exercise is walking the dog, probably in all about 3-4 miles a day but it depends on what time I'm home from work, so not much really.
Used to go to the gym and take classes but over did it in my younger years and have knackered my knees and back. Was told walking is really good for you by the docs and it's free Smile

Bramblesinafield · 24/05/2013 08:57

Think I'm gradually going lower. Hit my lowest a couple of weeks ago and weighed in at it day after fast this week. Fast day today before the bh weekend. Wish I'd won that tassimo machine, could have had some great coffees!

Moominlandmidwinter · 24/05/2013 08:59

Morning all.

Am slightly disappointed this morning, as I have lost, but only 0.75lb. Was really hoping for more. However, I think I have realised that my maintenance calories are a whole 150Kcal per day lower than I thought Blush, so it looks as though I have been over-eating on my NFDs! I'm thinking of adding in a mini-fast on Tuesdays, and only eating up to 1000 kcal after 4pm.

Having said that, I'm off to my sister's over the weekend, and it might involve meals out etc. I'll try to stick to TDEE as much as I can, but accept that I may go over.

swallowedAfly · 24/05/2013 09:04

lickthespoon - just black coffee and water and i tend not to eat anything at all till at least 4 in the week.

yesterday though i went to my friend's house in the afternoon and was famished so couldn't resist saying yes to a small cheese and mushroom omelette and tea with milk. then i didn't eat till about 9 when i had a giant bag of crisps and some dark chocolate so wasn't expecting good news from the scales today but i suppose realistically my cals were still not that high.

tbh it feels like now i've got past a certain plateau with a few massages my body wants to lose weight or is ready to or is more able to release it or something. don't know but i'm not complaining Smile

headintheclouds · 24/05/2013 09:04

Morning all, a pound down this week, which I'm hoping is the first of many! I just changed my fast days to Tues/ Thurs on the advice of someone up thread a few weeks back . I've now lost 3 weeks in a row ( still only minute amounts) but I've been bouncing between 10 6- 10 -7 for so long now !!!! Today a new low of 10 st 5 !! Halle- bloody - lluia . Have a good weekend all .

Dotty342kids · 24/05/2013 09:16

saf that's brilliant! Am really pleased for you Grin

I've religiously tracked my new TDEE using MFP this week and have shifted a pound or two by doing that. And today's my second fast day of the week so hoping to see a decentish weight tomorrow.
Not quite sure when to do next fast day as we're out and about doing family stuff on Monday and I want to be able to eat out if we fancy it. Can't do any days after that as going on holiday but have decided on hols to try to stick to healthy meals as much as poss rather than do my complete overindulging holiday mode! We're going to Marrakech so hoping lots of lovely meat / vegetable tagine things + very little alcohol (as it's a muslim country) should help with this.

INeedThatForkOff · 24/05/2013 09:34

NoWay, well done you! I had a great first weigh in too, makes the hunger pangs on fast days totally worthwhile Smile

Well done Doris, saf, Prawntoast (yum) and ERD too. I'm hoping to have stayed the same at WI tomorrow because I lost nearly 6lbs the first week and have had a guilt-free birthday binge day this week. Yesterday I tracked on MFP and today I'm fasting, so hoping to see the back of any actual gain. If so we might have a curry this weekend.

I find myself looking forward to FDs now. It's really good to feel that everything is under control, even with eating normally the rest of the time.

Is anyone using a fitness gadget like a FitBit or Fuelband? I've just had a Jawbone Up and am using it to track movement which is quite motivating. It syncs with MFP too but I haven't worked that bit out yet.

monster54 · 24/05/2013 09:54

Well I knew it would be disappointed. Weigh in 11st 4.5lbs....I've been bouncing between this and 11st 3lbs for the last 4 weeks. I've even done 4:3 the last 2 weeks....

Sooooo demotivated right now. I need to find the energy and want to carry on? How do people do it?

I am going to track this weekend and see, also the no snacking. HELP!!

ElizaCBennett · 24/05/2013 10:06

No loss for me AGAIN this week. Getting seriously fed up really! As someone up thread said, I seem to be losing and gaining the same couple of pounds.

BetsyBell · 24/05/2013 10:08

Hey monster I'm going through that now too - don't get demotivated, just carry on and it'll suddenly shift. I've been NO SNACKING this week and spent an awful lot of time feeling hungry and not particularly enjoying it (apart from the personal satisfaction of not caving in I suppose), weight has barely changed but I know that all of a sudden, when I'm not expecting it, a few pounds will suddenly shift and it'll all be worthwhile. This has been my pattern of weight loss for the last nearly 2 years, all 47lbs of it!!!

SkylerWhite · 24/05/2013 10:18

I am so delighted - I saw an 8 this morning! 8st 13.5, to be fair, but I am delighted! Fasted yesterday as well as the day before, and came down from 9 st 2 at the start of the week. Really feel like the fasting (and exercising) is paying off.

Bit anxious now about a week in France next week: lots of seafood which will be great, but the bread and the pastries! Anyone any tips for combining 5:2 with holidays? Or should I just say sod it for the week?

invinoveritas51 · 24/05/2013 10:30

Well done all you losers! Some great results Smile. I did brave the scales this morning and, as expected, there was a gain (2lb) but I was pleased (Hmm) as thought it would be much higher after the week I have had! Am back on the straight and narrow now until holidays in two weeks and will head back to the gym next week too - my body won't know what's hit it!

ELR · 24/05/2013 10:31

skyler say sod it for the week! But just be mindful of what you eat and enjoy it. I am going to Croatia for a week on Tuesday and will be doing just that!

spababe · 24/05/2013 11:00

2nd FD for me today - anyone else doing a FD today?

YoniFoolsAndHorses · 24/05/2013 11:16

spababe I am! Wanted to do all day, but just realised I have a work lunch so I'll have to eat something! Will go for soup I think and hope it doesn't make me too hungry later.

Bramblesinafield · 24/05/2013 11:20

Fd here prior to bh weekend. Still hovering around target today.

Off to paris in a couple of weeks for cheese, wine and pastries Grin

akarucker · 24/05/2013 11:22

Yep, I'm fasting today. After my disastrous three day holiday eating, a weigh in this morning (after a FD & NFD) shows a 3lb gain! Now why can't a 3lb loss be just as easy??
These two fasts since then have been very hard. I wonder if it's because I stretched my stomach? Not enjoying it. Blah! Will I ever learn? Not sure if I will...

Dotty342kids · 24/05/2013 11:31

Fast day for me today spababe, off to shop in a mo to buy some cod for our dinner (sizzling cod with roasted peppers, new potatoes and green beans - yum!)

frenchfancy · 24/05/2013 11:36

Skyler When I went on holiday I did 2 mini fasts rather than full fasts. So ate nothing all day but didn't calorie count the evening meal. I made an effort to be more active than I normally am on holiday (eg playing with the kids instead of watching them play) and I actually managed to lose weight.

Where in France are you going?

SkylerWhite · 24/05/2013 11:43

frenchfancy going to the Côte Vermeille, in French Catalonia. Can't wait! Mini-fasts might be the way to go, even if I only manage one or two (although might eat main meal at lunchtime, as the best value is to be had then). Hoping to include a bit of cycling, swimming each day, as well as a couple of walks. But the croissants! Sad

plecofjustice · 24/05/2013 11:53

Having a couple of rubbish NFD's and need some help, hugs, ass-kicking!

Not having a great week, but did 2 good fasts Monday and Wednesday. On Tuesday, I did pretty well with a controlled NFD - didn't over-eat and made it to the gym. Yesterday though, I made the fatal mistake of buying wine on the way home, drank a couple of glasses of it and ate 7 gingernuts as well as my (not inspiring at all) dinner. All in all, ate 2500 calories - yuck!

Today, ate my breakfast as normal. Felt so hungry at 11 that I ate my (deeply uninspiring leftovers from last night's dinner) lunch, so it's 12pm, and I've already eaten 814 cals. Still a bit peckish from my lunch (vegan spinach dip thing made with blended spinach and kidney beans and a chopped up burger left over from last night, mixed together) Meh!! Just want to go and eat an Itsu Potsu, but that's just greedy!

akarucker · 24/05/2013 12:09

pleco don't panic, 2500 cals is recoverable. I don't know what your TDEE is, but if you've had 800 cals today, then I'm guessing you have around 800-1000 cals left for a nice dinner. Make it delicious and enjoy it. It's awful when you don't enjoy your cals. Be sensible for the rest of the day, eat up to your TDEE, and then perhaps your next couple of NFD, just try and eat a little under your TDEE to make up for yesterday.

You can do it. You're not off track, it just hasn't been as good as it could, that's all. No worries.

plecofjustice · 24/05/2013 12:18

Thanks Smile!!

It's just rubbish, I thought I'd moved away from emotional eating, but i was feeling and there were biscuits in the cupboard, so in they went!

Sadly no opportunity for dinner tonight - I'm travelling for the bank holiday. Sounds nice though!

LickTheSpoon · 24/05/2013 12:22

Mini fasts on holiday are a v good compromise, thanks for the idea french.

It's just unfair isn't it skyler that every country's cuisine contains something fiendishly tasty but unhealthy to lead us astray - when I go to France I always think I will be healthy on lean steak and salad...but forget about the croissants and cheeses. This year I'm going to Cyprus and I am thinking "grilled fish, salad, fruits and yoghurt"...but when I get there it will be baklava and lamb and halloumi! Even the Japanese had to ruin virtuous sushi by inventing tempura. It's a conspiracy...

EagleRiderDirk · 24/05/2013 12:48

pleco don't worry. I had a hard week this week. The fast was a struggle as were the NFDs. Yesterday suddenly improved for me and today's fast is going far better again. I'm sure we're not the only ones who get occasional no amount of food is going to satisfy me days!
