GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/05/2013 08:27

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Fast day number 4 - they're definitely getting easier!

I weighed myself on my possibly untrustworthy scales. I'm hoping that if I leave them in the same place they will at least accurately register gains and losses, even if the headline weight is wrong. If they are to be believed, I've lost 3lb this week, which would be great!

monster54 · 23/05/2013 20:09

Same here me and my four I've been bouncing around 11st3 for 3 weeks now.

I'm not positive about my official weigh in tomorrow and also due totm booooooo!!!!!

ceebeegeebies · 23/05/2013 20:29

Evening Smile will catch up with the thread now, it has been a busy day!

FD for me and I thought they were getting easier but then had a bit of a 'funny do' driving home from work Sad felt really hot and really difficult to keep my eyes open...anyway, decided to have something really sugary when I got home as felt it was low blood sugar. By the time I got home it had passed and I felt fine Hmm weird!!!

Any ideas on why this was??

EstoyAqui · 23/05/2013 20:34

Skylerwhite I only do fast days next to each other. Monday and Tuesdays, as these are the days where least temptation is near. Also I weigh in on a Wednesday and after a weekend of indulgence it feels like a fresh clean start to the week. I have tried alternate days but it feels like my hunger switch doesn't reset when I have a space between fasts.

Yoni I too am an apple. My tummy is still wobbly but smaller wobbly IYKWIM. I'm hoping that as I near my ideal weight it will catch up and regulate.

Interestingly today has been an eating day for me and it feels like I've overdone it but when I've entered into MFP what I've consumed I'm nowhere near the 1200 calories its recommending. I'm going to correct that now with a glass of wine and a small cheese plate.

NoWayNoHow · 23/05/2013 21:07

Yoni, I will be 35 - spooky! Wink

frenchfancy · 23/05/2013 21:15

Estoy I know you haven't asked and I am probably interfering, but 1200 seems awfully low for a NFD. You should be eating up to your TDEE (on average), which means that for MFP you need to set it as weight maintenance rather than weight loss. I guess you can have more cheese than you thought.

EstoyAqui · 23/05/2013 21:44

frenchfancy thanks, I just set it up to lose 2lb a week. I've gone in and changed it on the app and apparently I can now eat 1960 calories a day! That is another few crackers and a glass of wine. Thankyou for setting me right. :)

DonDrapersAltrEgoBigglesDraper · 23/05/2013 23:01

Can I ask you all about using MFP?

I used to use it before I started doing 5:2, but I know it 'tells you off' if you go below a certain number of calories per day, and gives a warning that you're eating too few, you won't lose weight this way, and that you're bad, etc.

How do you get around this? Can you set it so that you have a 500 calorie limit some days, and a TDEE=equivalent on NFDs?

Itsaboatjack · 23/05/2013 23:05

I just set MFP to TDEE and then look at the weekly deficit and aim for it to be around 3500 for 1lb a week loss. I ignore the message about going into starvation mode.

DonDrapersAltrEgoBigglesDraper · 23/05/2013 23:09

Oh really?! Grin

God, I'm such an inherent law-abider, that I've been entering my calories for fast days, but not logging it, so as to avoid the telling off!! I had visions of the powers that be at MFP banning me or something... Hmm

I need to properly work out my TDEE and do it that way. Thanks, Itsaboat. :)

CrystalDeCanter · 23/05/2013 23:18

G'day all .

It's my first NFD after 2 FDs and blimey, I'm not really that hungry. I thought I'd be ravenous.

One thing I have noticed is that although I slept well, and I thought I'd be really wakeful as so hungry, I have had the maddest dreams. Anyone else?

Tortoise how active is your dh? It sounds like you're really busy (10,000 steps, fencing (!), chasing 2 small children, working etc etc) is he similarly rushing about? I know 80% of losing weight is what we stuff into our mouths but 20% is deffo exercise. Also is he sticking to his TDEE on NFDs? I did that calculation and cos I'm short, and old, my TDEE is a LOT smaller than I'd realised. A paltry 1600 calories Sad.

FairyArmadillo · 23/05/2013 23:27

Can't keep up with the thread but still finding it supportive. Fast Day 5 started off well. Very well. My clothes have been feeling slacker. My jeans are not as tight as they used to be. Fasting was a lot easier today. My period started today (first time while fasting) and as mentioned before I haven't gone mad with PMT, nor have I been the grumpy cow I usually am on the first day of my period. Was doing really well til... now. Just had a major attack of menstrual munchies and ate two packets of crisps. However I shall put it down as a slight off day and get back on track on Monday (fast Mon and Thurs). On the bright side if I wasn't fasting I would have been eating junk like this all day during this time.

Itsaboatjack · 23/05/2013 23:30

GrinGrin at being scalded by mfp.

Another NFD done with No Snacking!!

wonderingagain · 23/05/2013 23:45

I've had a lovely day of eating. Anything. Chocolates, trifle, spag bol, fried eggs. Thoroughly enjoyed it and it reminded me why this diet's so good.

Back to minimalism tomorrow but for one day only...

LickTheSpoon · 24/05/2013 04:55

Just did Jillian Michaels' Shred for 1st time. I am very out of shape! Longest 20 mins EVER! collapses in heap

Maybe FD not best time to start fitness regime. I know lots of you exercise while fasting though. Will be interesting to compare energy levels doing same workout on NFD.

frenchfancy · 24/05/2013 06:23

lickthespoon it is perfectly normal to colapse into a heap after Jillian.

LickTheSpoon · 24/05/2013 07:05

Good to know french. My legs felt like they'd turned to jelly!

I guess the only way is up from here...

Emilythornesbff · 24/05/2013 07:15

Wow this thread has grown. It's hard to keep up.

Well done *it'saboatjack" on not snacking. I have to remember that today. it's astonishing how much potential crap there is to eat.

I always like my fist NFD after a fasting. But I keep feeling it might still be worthwhile skipping lunch. That's often when I snack because I don't get to sit down. Not sure what to have for breakfast. I need to go shopping for some real food.

EagleRiderDirk · 24/05/2013 07:19

The lowest weight I've every registered in the last 4 years was when they weighed me at my booking appointment for DD. I never count that as a real low as I barely ate and was so ill. I am now lower than that weight.

I lost half a stone before I got pregnant and before that I had shirked the scales. So I am guessing from clothes sizes I am the lowest weight I've been in about 5 years.

I've been doing this for 6 weeks. I've lost 5 years of weight in 6 weeks!

Well done losers and good luck all fellow fastees today

Prawntoast · 24/05/2013 07:29

Well managed to squeeze 0.25lb off this week, my smallest loss ever but I'm just into the 9's!!! It's been years. Next target is 9.7.
Have a lovely long weekend all.

swallowedAfly · 24/05/2013 07:36

very pleased for you eagle and all losers Smile

this morning i am 10.9.2 - another new low for me and into the 10 plus single number zone. i've lost 19lbs in total now - mostly in quick bursts tbh followed by long periods of not really getting anywhere but overall since beginning of feb so about 16weeks.

my initial 'big' goal was to get under 10stone. i will review that if and when i get there depending on how i feel/look. in an ideal world i'd like to get there before i go on holiday on 4th july. that gives me 6 weeks which i would have thought really ambitious but it is coming off pretty easily and quickly at the minute so fingers crossed maybe it's possible.

i've only done one 500 fast this week but nearly every day has been a long fast plus small eating window but not counting calories day itms. at the minute that seems to be working for me.

EATmum · 24/05/2013 07:43

Advice appreciated. I fasted on Weds this week and for the first time really struggled. I'm about four/five weeks in and haven't found it hard. Various factors - sleep deprivation from small person wanting to play at night, bad day in the office, and bit coldy. I didn't give it up, but wondered whether I should have - is it better to call it quits and do it another day, or to cling (miserably) determinedly to the fast? Sure I ate more than my own body weight yesterday in carbs which probably negated any benefit in the fast itself! Would appreciate any thoughts.

LickTheSpoon · 24/05/2013 07:44

Eagle Prawn Saf - well done all. So impressed!

Saf - what are your eating hours on the long fast, short eating days? Do you abstain from tea/coffee with milk and other non solid calories during the non-eating time?

NoWayNoHow · 24/05/2013 07:45

Holy crap!! I am 3lbs lighter than WI this time last Friday!! Bearing in mind I only started this WOE on Tues!!

Can't quite believe it, although my stomach feels flatter than it has in month. This week's loss is 3 quarters of what I've lost the whole year on Weight Watchers.

I sense I might become a little evangelical about this... Wink

DorisShutt · 24/05/2013 08:02

Another 1lb off this week (although it may be more as I forgot to weigh myself au naturel so this was with clothes on - anyone know what clothes weigh?!).

I'm quite chuffed as I haven't been evangelical about portion size and have had a blow out.

I think my next step might be to actually do some exercise. Trouble is that (as a relic of school PE) I loathe exercise.

What do other people do about exercising?
