GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/05/2013 08:27

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

invino here's that kick you wanted - but don't worry! It isn't too late. I am on hol in a fortnight too - AND I also had a terrible gluttonous evening which left me feeling terrible both physically and in terms of outlook. (Was feeling down in dumps which led to overindulging). But I'm telling myself I can still achieve a lot in 2 weeks...and that I'm in this for the long haul, not just the usual pre holiday quick fix!

Well done losers. I love to hear about all the great successes. I have no scales here as I've said b4 but a friend commented recently that I looked like I'd lost weight and that my face was changing shape. Nsv - hurrah!

ELR · 23/05/2013 14:47

Hi everyone, got a really bad cold so decided to add an extra few calories into my fast today. Had a cup of tea and a boiled egg with a slice of wholemeal this morning then I've waited 5 hours and had some soup and then I've got steak, celeriac mashand asparagus for dinner which will be a 6 hour gap comes in at just under 700 calories which I am pleased about.
First time I've had a fast fail in 28 fasts.

LickTheSpoon · 23/05/2013 15:11

Impressive stat Elr and tbh I don't think this counts as a fail anyway. You planned it for a start ...also you are ill. Seems like you are just being sensible and taking care of yourself to me. Which is what this wol is about. Get well soon Flowers

Whitecat · 23/05/2013 15:24

No ELR that is definitely not a fail. It's good fuel and minimal calories to fix your bod.

invinoveritas51 · 23/05/2013 15:45

Thanks, lick - it's comforting to know I'm not the only one so I will knuckle down for the next two weeks and see how I go. If I feel brave enough I'll jump on the scales tomorrow - at least then I will know the full extent of the damage! We are having brown trout for supper tonight, caught by DH2B yesterday so very healthy! Think I might do another FD tomorrow, or at least a mini fast and hopefully I will be back at the gym next week. Does anyone know how long it takes for an achilles tendon to heal?!

fastyspeedyfast · 23/05/2013 16:13

How many calories in ibuprofin??

mehefin · 23/05/2013 16:13

I don't buy clothes very often but have recently fallen for a particular jumper. So - I've ordered it in a size 12. At end of January I was tight in a 16, am now comfortable in a 14 but looking forward I want it to fit and then maybe be a bit baggy.

Good decision ? !

Will be a good motivation I guess - was quite a lot of money for me

NoWayNoHow · 23/05/2013 16:14

Hope you feel better ELR.

DS has been asking to go to Nandos for dinner tonight as DH is out and it's just the 2 of us. I've been procrastinating with an answer as its a fast day. But out of interest, I checked MFP and I can get a quarter chicken breast, mixed salad and corn on the cob coming in at 224cals!! Shock

I'm guessing the chicken would need to be plain and Obvs woyldnt be adding butter to corn, but this is a massive win and so much for appealing than tiny quantities of leftovers!

BetsyBell · 23/05/2013 16:16

ahem

4 pm alert: NO SNACKING

BetsyBell · 23/05/2013 16:23

tortoise Half a pound a week is still a good result, especially if your DH is not that overweight to start with. Is he over-eating on NFDs? Did you both take measurements too to see where the fat loss is coming from?

Oh and it's worth weighing first thing in the morning in as few clothes as possible and sticking to the same time, our weight varies hugely during the day after all.

ELR Hope you feel better soon, being hungry AND coldy sucks, I usually have a break if I'm feeling unwell.

Miffy You can do it! I did it yesterday even though I had to eat lunch (well brunch I suppose) at 11am!

fastspeedy I've wondered the same myself sometimes! Needs must...

spababe · 23/05/2013 16:23

wondering where you have all got scales that measure less than 1lb ie when you say you weight 9st 8.4lb? Mine only weigh in whole pounds.

fastyspeedyfast · 23/05/2013 16:25

I bought digital scales - they measure less than a pound. However, it doesn't really matter; stick with your old scales.

headintheclouds · 23/05/2013 16:31

itsaboat Blood pressure is weight ,age and gender specific. The top number is less important than the bottom number reading.
Your latest reading is a good one ,it means your heart is not working as hard to pump the blood around your circulation... (if you are in your 30s/40s). If you were much younger say early 20s its a little on the high side.
Hope this helps

Banderchang · 23/05/2013 16:33

Afternoon ladies - I've been lurking since Sunday because I started the 5:2 programme this week. Today is my second fast day and I'm not finding it too bad so far. Or at least I wasn't, until my 4 year old decided we were going to bake gingerbread men this afternoon! I didn't eat any mixture, lick any spoons or eat any finished biscuits, but now the whole house smells yummy and there are trays of little biscuits lying around cooling! Not fair!

But I will stick to it: I'm doing 3 small meals a day and it's going ok. 2 weetabix with a splash of milk for breakfast (180 cals), 1 cuppa soup (94 cals) for lunch, then a mackerel salad for dinner (200 cals). I may allow myself an apple for supper if necessary.

Am currently 10 stone 2.4 (according to this morning's weigh in) and would like to be 9 stone 10 or even 9 stone 7 (am 5' 7).

DH has been 5:2ing since January and has lost loads of weight, so I'm hopping on the band wagon to shift my half stone or so I would like to lose. I'm guessing I'll lose around half a pound a week, based on what I've read the rest of you are losing, but it would be nice to lose faster! I'm trying to be goodish on my NFDs, but don't have any apps or techy support so am just guessing what I should be eating those days.

Hope everyone has stayed strong through the 4pm danger zone for snacking!

ELR · 23/05/2013 16:39

Thanks whitecat and lick I know it's not really a fail as I planned to do it. It's just I'm so close to the 9's I really want to get there by next Tuesday as I go on holiday and it was just a personal goal I set myself.
I don't think I could have managed mentally without the extra calories today.
Just had a cup of tea to send the snacking demons packing!

YoniFoolsAndHorses · 23/05/2013 16:45

nowaynohow MY birthday is on Monday too, with spookily similar weights as well. Ooohhh.

How old will you be? I will be 36, which I think of as officially on the slide down to 40. But my sweet tween has just told me she thinks I don't look a day older than 30 --she wants me to top up her mobile
phone credit--.

meandmyfour · 23/05/2013 16:47

I know a lot is written about the scales bouncing around but I am feeling disheartened by losing then gaining the same two/three pounds every week. Weighed myself this morning after second fast of the week and it was okay but it's depressing to think that the minute I start eating again (ie, two or three normal sized meals) it's just going to go shooting back up.
A lot of you talk about weight just suddenly dropping...I'm five weeks in to this WOE and it feels painfully slow. I've not really lost anything in the last three weeks...sigh. trying to be good on NFD's...I know the rules!
Anyone else struggling?X

YoniFoolsAndHorses · 23/05/2013 16:47

miffytastic It's really annoying but although I have lost a teeny amount in terms on inches, the weight loss makes my stomach look worse than it did before as it's so saggy.

But I shall stick with the abs work!

BsshBossh · 23/05/2013 17:52

This no snacking experiment is really working for me.

Despite dieting since early last year, doing 5:2 (including a few 36 hour zero fasts) since January and reaching goal weight in April, and despite my appetite reducing considerably as my stomach has shrunk, I haven't been able to get my eating on NFDs under control. I don't necessarily mean overeating my TDEE, I mean eating when not actually hungry, eating for the sake of it ( = overeating in my book) and feeling bloated and uncomfortable. Just like the bad old days when I was overweight.

Reading those snacking links I mentioned up thread has made it all click into place in my head and not snacking seems a natural companion to 5:2: giving my digestion a chance to complete its job by not grazing, allowing my system a chance to burn fat not glycogen, reseting the hunger/fullness switch. All my usual IBS symptoms have disappeared this week for the first time in years. This week I've only eaten my proper meals, have not snacked at all in between meals, waited 5-6 hours between each meal, and haven't had the urge to eat for the sake of it or when not hungry.

This is going to change the way I eat in the longterm. I still enjoy fasting even though I'm at a good weight (the health benefits alone will keep me fasting once or twice a week) but now I'm also not snacking on weekdays (weekends and special days will be the exception because I need to live a normal life).

It's working so far, but I'll keep you posted.

SkylerWhite · 23/05/2013 18:01

Dotty342 yes, this turned into a regular fast. Haven't had anything apart from 2 cups of tea and lots of water, and will have (no skin) left over roast chicken with some roast vegetables (courgette, pepper, onion) in about an hour.

Is it bad to do 2 fast days in a row?

akarucker · 23/05/2013 18:23

OMG...seriously, what's wrong with me? I forgot about the no snacking this morning, so then vowed to abstain this afternoon, but forgot again! That just shows me how normal it is for me to eat between meals. I have now written on the fridge and cupboard 'No Snacking' ready for the next few days. Turns out I am a huge snacker. Let's see if a bit of a re-train will help. I mean, just thinking back to today, I must have had 10 between snacks (some v healthy & v low cal, but still, it's constant). Not good. This thread makes me open my eyes...thank you!

BetsyBell · 23/05/2013 18:32

aka Ooh, you're like the people on secret eaters - not even realising when you're doing it!

Bssh I'm sensing a real change in me after only a few days of NoS, just as I managed to re-programme myself to not desire snacks in the evening last year I'm now definitely kicking the post-school/work habit and it's going to make all the difference long term. It just goes to show how much that eating is habitual rather than as your body actually requires. Fast days are great but easy in a way as you just can't have that thing, but to change the mindset of eating days feels like a huge achievement. I'm so very happy with my progress.

Itsaboatjack · 23/05/2013 18:49

Thanks headinclouds I'm 38 so I'm happy with that then.

INeedThatForkOff · 23/05/2013 18:59

Just checking in after a day off the wagon for my birthday, on which I regained 3 of the 5 lbs I lost last week Blush. Never mind, it'll be temporary.

How long have we had our own fasting section of MN? Not sure I'll find my way back unless I go through my history.

Well, fasting now until my 500 cal tea tomorrow, then joining the non-snackers on Sat. I think I might switch my Thursday fast to Friday permanently, to avoid the temptation of a three day splurge at the weekend.

ELR · 23/05/2013 19:01

betsy I know what you mean I kicked the evening snack habit last year too. This week has been great I've managed not to snack all week apart from the glass of wine yesterday and the evening peanut butter on toast but putting that down to being ill! If this continues I will easily be able to maintain when I get to my goal. The surprising thing is that it is def habit as I'm not actually that hungry a cup of tea sorts me out and then I forget about it. I think a lot of it is because I'm worried I'm missing out too, because I can fit snacks in in my tdee I think I will have that cake, ect. Now I'm having the cake just after a meal and I'm eating less of it, so it's all good!
