The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I love reading all these posts where people are battling and aiming for the 9s. It gives me hope that its achievable to get down there. I'll be happy for now to see the 12s, though last month I said that about the 13s and here I am. Well done all

monster54 · 23/05/2013 09:26

Same here eagle I am well and truly stuck in the 11's....

I don't seem to have even been able to even shift my weekend bloat despite 2 fasts already this week.

I am on a FD today...I am not feeling positive about tomorrows official weigh in. I don't know whether to skip it or witness the disappointment! Come on plateau....I NEED you to move!!!

Well done everyone on great losses!!!

monster54 · 23/05/2013 09:30

Tired too emily WE CAN DO THIS!!!

Breaking it up today, soup for lunch and for dinner to keep us going!!

monster54 · 23/05/2013 09:32

Itsaboatjack · 23/05/2013 09:45

Does anyone know much about blood pressure? I just had mine done by the nurse this morning. The readings go like this
6 months ago 148/83
3 months ago 128/81
Today 136/75

So the top number has gone up and the bottom one down. Is that good or bad? I had literally just got there after I got there after rushing about 3 miles to get dd's to nursery then school then get to the surgery on time if that makes any difference?

SkylerWhite · 23/05/2013 09:45

Weighed in this morning after my fast yesterday, and was down to 9st1, after having bounced up to 9st3 yesterday morning. Feeling happier!

Today I am planning to do a mini-fast, might have an apple if I feel really hungry at lunchtime. Dinner will be leftover roast chicken, with roasted courgettes and peppers and red onions, with some new potatoes for my DH. Hoping that will still be a reasonable day.

Hoping for more success during the weekdays, and being able to let my hair down during the week. Working from home is a bitch though, with the fridges and cupboards calling to me all the time!

Best of luck to everyone fasting today!

Dotty342kids · 23/05/2013 10:03

Woohoo itsaboatjack, that's ace! And no, sorry, I know next to nothing about blood pressure - did the nurse not give you any indication of what it meant?
I've stuck very carefully within my TDEE for the last 2-3 days and have just made a nice chilli for my lunch today as am out this evening so will grab a quick sandwich for tea.
Fast day tomorrow and then will continue to try to stick to TDEE over weekend. Might fast Sunday rather than bank holiday Monday but not decided yet.

Dotty342kids · 23/05/2013 10:04

skyler I'd have thought (as long as no skin on the chicken) that that would come in at or around 500 cals so why is it a "mini fast"? I always think a mini fast only differs from a normal fast day in terms of the amount of cals consumed at the evening meal .....

MizK · 23/05/2013 10:06

Well done everybody who's lost weight :)

monster I bet you will see a shift, good luck if you decide to weigh in.

Fast day today, miso soup planned for late afternoon then chicken noodle soup at 7ish.

Another one dreading weigh in tomorrow, feel I've been eating way too much on NFDs, hope that I can fix that as I continue on the 5:2 plan.

Good luck to those fasting today and enjoy NFDs everybody else!

YoniFoolsAndHorses · 23/05/2013 10:37

spababe I don't think there's a definitive answer. I have heard both arguments for and against 4:3 versus 5:2, but on Micheal Mosely's own website, he recommends 4:3 as a way of breaking through a plateau. And true alternate day fasting to get even better results. So I don't know!

I think it has helped me this week, but I wonder if I ought to do just two of them as water only fasts and have 500 calories on the third day? It's my birthday this BH weekend and I suspect know there will be a lot of champagne and other such yummy things. I think I'll plan one more 4:3 for next week and then see if I should drop back to 5:2....

Thank you endof and bssh. Glad to know there are other people with the apple curse!! (Although not pleased - but at least it must shift eventually!!).

YoniFoolsAndHorses · 23/05/2013 10:39

PS I am also hovering above the 10 stone mark. I was 10 1.8 this morning!!!

I want to be under 10 stone for my birthday

And then just one more stone to go Smile

ChesterDrawers · 23/05/2013 11:01

Half an lb on this morning but I will take that as I have really indulged on my off days this week. Normally on a celebration week I'd easily gain 3-4lbs so I am happy with that. Sitting at 10st 0.4 this morning so ridiculously close to the 9s.

And it's still 4.5lbs in 3 weeks so can't complain.

NoWayNoHow · 23/05/2013 11:25

Yoni, I also want to be under 10st for my birthday, but considering it's on Monday I think that's ambitiouis! FD for me today, WI at 10.3.5 this morning.

Bless DH, he made me breakfast this morning not knowing it is a FD for me - 255cals on 2 slices gluten free toast and a boiled egg! That's going to make dinner tonight particularly tricky! Think I'm going to finish off the antipasti stuff from dinner last night, so some olives, chorizo and salami with a massive Greek salad (going light on the feta!)

Not as hungry today as I was expecting to be considering there was wine last night with my friend coming over to dinner, but trying to stay full up with soda water! My body isn't buying it Wink

Good luck for everyone fasting today!

akarucker · 23/05/2013 11:31

Oops, I forgot about the no snacking thing...ok, I'll skip any afternoon/evening snacking to try and make up for it.

invinoveritas51 · 23/05/2013 11:56

Oh bother! The wheels have definitely fallen off! Haven't been able to go the gym for 10 days now due to a wounded Achilles tendon and as if that wasn't bad enough we have had a houseful of people since Sunday so have eaten far too much and had gallons of Wine! Am refusing to look the scales in the eye as am not brave enough to get on. It's a FD today but it's really not easy with a hangover! I need a hefty kick up the behind from all of you to get myself back on track - am off on holiday two weeks today and my cunning plan to have lost half a stone by then just wasn't cunning enough, clearly!

BsshBossh · 23/05/2013 12:01

Thanks CrystalDeCanter. No, majority of my weight was lost eating 10-15% below my TDEE using MyFitnessPal for a month then I got bored of daily calorie counting and shifted to 5:2 to lose the last couple of stones.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 23/05/2013 12:43

Thanks for kind words, all, and especially BetsyBell; the main reason DH and I started this diet was the health reasons. I'm a prime candidate for Type II diabetes, he has a family history of heart attack. Technically we were both within healthy BMI, but in both cases only just (tbh I might have been 2lbs over) and for both of us, we're small-medium framed and it definitely was overweight for us. And both of us carry it around our middle.

Talking of DH; we've just completed our fourth week. I think it's fair to say that he has found it tougher, in that after the first week I switched to liquid fast during the day (miso, tea, etc) and just have a dinner, whereas he has continued to need to halve his between two meals and he gets home frantic for dinner. And yet, in four weeks he has lost...maybe 2lb? And when I say maybe, when he first reluctantly weighed in, it was mid afternoon after eating and drinking properly, and the second weigh, yesterday, was during a fast day. So even the 2lb could be attributed to water.

Is that really odd? 2lb maximum in four weeks, when there are no other variables? I've lost 5lb, and I was smaller to start with.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 23/05/2013 12:44

I meant to say, in case it wasn't explicit: I am sure he isn't cheating!

monster54 · 23/05/2013 12:51

Thanks to whoever recommended the New York Butternut Squash soup!!

It is divine! And whole pot for 200cals!!!

A coffee this afternoon and then I have the tuscan one for dinner....240 cals!!

I hope I can get this 3rd one in the bag and then at least I might stay the same.....ggrrrrrr!!!!!!

bastard stall

Miffytastic · 23/05/2013 12:54

I thought Drama Llama was only used by me and my mum! one of my favourite phrases :)

Hope you're doing OK to day saf

Yoni I'm another apple, and whilst I do'nt feel like my tummy is amazingly smaller, it has gone down and also back fat has shifted a weeny bit. I've lost 9/10lbs so it's not a huge amount but my side/back view is changing too I think. Have you measured yourself? I've lost about 2/3cms off my waist.

NO SNACKING UPDATE: didn't snack yesterday. Just had 3 good meals. However I did have a muller corner for lunch pudding and a mini chocballs one for teatime pudding. Have eaten an early lunch today at 11.45 though so not sure if I can make it all the way to kids teatime with no snacking... Hmmmm

Dotty342kids · 23/05/2013 12:58

I'm also very apple shaped (though without the slim legs bit of it, annoyingly!). My tummy is definitely still there, but is less "solid" if you know what I mean? It's softer, and smaller and looks less "sticky outy" in clothes.
I don't think it'll ever go completely (that really would be a miracle Grin ) but if it carries on shrinking a little, I'd be happy!

Whitecat · 23/05/2013 13:32

I thought you had all disappeared. Big/Slim/Whatever is now near the top of the topics list, luckily I'd saved it in Watching.

Back to the lower number I was a month ago. But I do seem to be recycling the same half kilo. Just a shade under 11st today. Two more kilos to goal but it feels like a loooong way to go.

Dotty I have been MFP tracking and no snacking. Being mindful of snacking has made me realise how often I grabbed just a little something in passing. The kettle has been going non stop to compensate.

fastyspeedyfast · 23/05/2013 13:41

Fast day today. Drinking tea to ward off headaches.

Dotty342kids · 23/05/2013 13:44

Yup whitecat I know what you mean!
Still, have inputted all today's food into MFP and tomorrow's a fast day so don't need to think about anything till Sat now. I'm same weight as you, would like to lose another 2-3 kilos too....

Whitecat · 23/05/2013 13:55

It has given me confidence in maintaining - just need to actually get to the theoretical maintaining weight.
