GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/05/2013 08:27

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

bvb I loved the first day of eating (and when I say eating, I mean stuffing my face faster than the food can reach my mouth). Enjoyed every moment. By day two, it was not so nice, and I wasn't enjoying the food as much. That would have been the time to log on here for a reality check. By day three, I was just so excited for it to end, that I couldn't wait for day four, to be back home to fast. Now of course, I'm just bloody starving and suffering the consequences.

Stil, itsa you're right, just jumping back on and back on track. Much better than the old days, where I would have thought, 'well, I've blown it for May, better wait until June...' There will be no loss this week, but love that this WOL enables you to get back on track pretty quickly.

BTW, ppc as I was reading your post about your car, I was taking a sip of licorice tea, and promptly snorted it through up into my nose, and out onto my iPhone! It's just the sort of thing I would do!

OK, I think I've made up my lack of posts with enough warbling. So excited for my breakfast. Don't think I've ever been so excited for a meal.

Oh, and one last thing. Took my little puppy with me, and he got scared walking along a busy road, so I carried him. After about 1/4 mile, I was exhausted because he was getting too heavy and had to put him down to walk. Weighed him when we got home. He weight ONE STONE, which is what I've lost (give or take..probably give after this last week), and I struggled to carry his weight for just a few hundred yards. I think that can count as a NSV!!! A puppy induced NSV!

awomanchanging · 22/05/2013 21:59

spababe interesting logic about 5:2 vs 4:3. Never thought about that.

awomanchanging · 22/05/2013 22:01

Has anyone had 2 consecutive fasts then 5 nfd and on day 8 still have lost weight? Although I know this is rather silly just wanted to know if there were any disadvantages, weight wise, to keep your fasts non consecutive.

BsshBossh · 22/05/2013 22:42

yoni my tummy is my most problematic area re flab. I've lost nearly 5 stones yet my tummy only started significantly reducing as I lost the last 1.5 stones.

agteacht · 22/05/2013 23:03

Day 3... done! Not as bad as I thought either. Excited to see the scales tomorrow. Come on the 9s, I can so nearly see you! X

Endofmyfeather · 23/05/2013 01:11

yoni I'm another apple shape. I've lost most of my weight so far (about 17lbs) from my legs and bum (and other obscure places!), and very little from my tummy. It's annoying as in a way it's making me look a bit worse than before as I'm out of proportion now and it sort of emphasises my stomach area. It's gotta go at some point though, we just have to keep the faith!

After a crazily indulgent weekend (long weekend here in west coast Canada), I had put on 5.5lbs Shock but happy to say after my first fast of the week I lost 4 of them. Phew!

I think of myself with betsy and fatsatuma - bouncing around the 10st mark (briefly glimpsed 9stone 13.8 last week!). I'll join you on the no snacking if that's ok!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 23/05/2013 01:31

Well, booooo. A very virtuous fast day completed yesterday, and I went to my fencing class and ran around extra hard, and this morning weighed in and nothing! Nada, zip, zilch, not a gram lost all week. I did have a slightly failed fast day on Monday, where I came in around 900 cals instead of 500, but no massive blowouts apart from that. Well there was Sunday night Eurovision cocktails, I guess. But still! I have kept up my 10,000 steps per day. I have managed a couple of runs. I have fasted like a fasty thing.

I am all wee humphy faces over here.

CrystalDeCanter · 23/05/2013 01:41

Oh Tortoise what an absolute bummer. I hate it when that happens. Mind you, in my extensive experience I find that if I stay the same one week (after being super good) I lose shit loads the following week. Keep at it.

Re your 10,000 steps - are you using a pedometer? I use Runkeeper on the iphone for runs/walks but need to measure my daily steps too I think.

I'm doing day 2 fast so I get 2 fasts in this week. I woke at 4.30 RAVENOUS but am ok now - am gulping down my daily Skinny Flat White for sustenance. I was rather short tempered with the dds this morning though. I think hunger is definitely making me more grumpy than usual.

BsssBossh wow! re your 5st loss. That's amazing, has it all been on the 5:2?

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 23/05/2013 01:58

I'm using a fitbit. Don't get me started on how much I adore this thing. It measures altitude as well as steps, also logs calorie burn so it tells me as I'm earning more exercise calories (well, it would if I could be arsed to log food daily, but the whole point of this diet, to me, is not having to think about it that obsessively), it says encouraging things, it logs sleep if I want it to, it is generally fabulous.

My DDs cop it a bit too. If DD1 is procrasting bedtime on a fast day, and my dinner is just there waiting for her to go to bed so I can go eat it, she gets short shrift.

CrystalDeCanter · 23/05/2013 02:07

Fitbit???!! what what?? Is it like a pedometer or an App or what??? How exciting, I quite fancy a new gadget.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 23/05/2013 03:14

www.fitbit.com

I have the One. It's a teensy pedometery thing, that syncs to your computer/smartphone and graphs a whole bunch of things. I wear mine clipped to my bra, which really means I should stop pulling it out and showing people, but I love it.

DonDrapersAltrEgoBigglesDraper · 23/05/2013 03:35

Hi, can I join you all? I have been doing 5:2 for 8 weeks now and was on a thread that started up back then, but seems to have died a death.

I have lost about 4-5 kilos, and would like to lose the same again. I feel like I have been hovering around this weight for the last 2 or 3 weeks and just can't seem to get any lower, but will persevere. I really want to get down to my goal weight of 65 kilos!

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 23/05/2013 06:01

I'm just about to set off to work, so will catch up properly with everyone later, but needed to tell you all...I'm in the 9s this morning!! Barely, but there! Didn't fast yesterday either, so god knows what's going on.

postmanpatscat · 23/05/2013 06:06

Hooray for karaoke !!

LickTheSpoon · 23/05/2013 07:07

Karaoke whoop whoop. Oh for the day when I join team 9s!

Welcome DonD!

Tortoise is fitbit the thing gwyneth Paltrow uses? (you're SO Hollywood dahling!) Read about it a while back but you're the first 'real' person I heard recommend it. Sounds clever...

Good fast yesterday - back fasting tomorrow, so have traded in lunch today for cake this afternoon. Not snacking, if it is a meal substitute, right?

Have a good FD all fasters; eat drink and be merry (but no snacking) non-fasters!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 23/05/2013 07:41

I have no idea, LicktheSpoon, I tend to stay away from GOOP! There's a thread on here about fitbits, I think, somewhere.

CrystalDeCanter · 23/05/2013 07:43

Well done Karaoke!

Tortoise I looked at the fitbit - I love them! I like the look of that wristband thingo. A pal also recommended this watch as a good watch/pedometer combo.

I am doing a LOT better on my fast today. Lunched on tuna, avocado and carrot. Which tasted a lot better than it sounds. Chicken and kale for dinner. Lucky me.

Hi Don, 4-5kg weight loss in 8 weeks is excellent going. Frustrating to have stalled a bit but amazing so far.

fatsatsuma · 23/05/2013 07:46

karaoke well done! I've also kissed the 9's this morning (9.13.8 so only just but still) Grin

Interestingly I seem to be shifting off the plateau following a few NFD's. my metabolism has def slowed down this the last couple of weeks so maybe I needed a bit more food for a few days to kick start things again. Confused

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 23/05/2013 07:52

This morning's scales-failure has spurred me on to greater things. Today is Thursday, which has long been my indulgent binge evening because DH goes out for the night. I sat down and worked out the calories for my usual spread...uhhhh...I'm a little bit embarrassed to admit this, but please bear in mind that for the last year or so I could pretty much literally eat whatever I wanted. So, uh. It came to almost 2,000 calories. I mean, with wine taken into account, but still. No wonder my weight was skyrocketing!

Ahem. So! I thought hard about what it was about that spread that I really wanted/needed, and substituted things (eg, Danish salami; salty, meaty, chewy...substitute leg ham, 1/4th of the calories), and I have a v lovely, indulgent spread for 600 calories instead, which will hopefully hit all the same bliss points.

I had lunch with a good friend today, as well. Historically - luckily this is only every couple of months - we tend to go to a nice pub where I'll have steak and chips and wine and so will he; but he is low-carbing, we both had grilled chicken salads and sparkling water, and I am feeling very good today.

Sorry for the novel. It's astounding to me just how out of kilter my eating had become, when 800+ calorie meals, and 500 calorie snacks, were feeling normal.

Itsaboatjack · 23/05/2013 07:55

A new low for me today. 11st 3.4lbs. 3 lbs down since yesterday. tortoise see my post yesterday re being frustrated when staying the same, keep going your body will let it go when it's ready.

Fitbits are great, I used to have one but it broke, I wore it when I did a 20mile training run when I did the marathon last year and I think I killed it, I had it on the waist band of my shorts I think I sweated so much it died.

Well done karaoke

Just realised we've another bank holiday to negotiate next week. I won't be fasting that day as I have a 10k run in the morning and then lunch with my sister, and I also normally do Wednesday but I've got a team building day at work which normally involves plenty of food and drink. Thursday I fully expect to be hungover so that's out, so I guess it'll have to be Tuesday and Friday.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 23/05/2013 07:56

Fatsatsuma and karaoke, excellent news all round! Fat*, I am particularly a fan of your theory that your weight loss was caused by eating more.

*An increasingly inappropriate contraction of your name, I apologise.

virginposter · 23/05/2013 08:33

tortoise don't be down. You have achieved many health benefits this week even though you can't measure them on the scales.
A friend of mine was upset last week as she had been very good and didn't lose anything. This week she has lost 3lbs so keep going and have faith Smile

BetsyBell · 23/05/2013 08:34

Tortoise I've had the same - no change on the scales (or measurements) BUT I'm under the impression my body is in it's cyclical hanging onto all the weight it can following a good few weeks of loss - if it weren't for 5:2 I'd be piling weight back on right now, despite eating levels and exercise levels being normal. I will, however, not have an excessive weekend - no bank holiday baking for me! Oh and it's half term... Confused

Still, onwards... and NO SNACKING - I will kick the 4pm habit which will be an even more fabulous result than seeing a new scale low Grin

Well done fatsuma, Karaoke and Itsa

agteacht · 23/05/2013 08:44

Congrats fatsatsuma and karaoke that is brilliant news!!!

I am 10.0.4 this morning.... so close.... hopefully will be joining you after my next fast day - although I'm not going to fit another one in until next Tuesday after the bank holiday, so it may be that I have to undo some damage first! x

Emilythornesbff · 23/05/2013 09:00

Fasting today. I'm very tired.
Well done all the losers. Lots of posts.
